Where to fish in winter?

The waters of the Black Sea have long been a fishing “road of life” - after all, valuable varieties of commercial fish were caught here. The Black Sea is home to 180 fish. Of these fish species in the last century (50s), mullet, garfish, flounder, beluga, sea bass, herring, gobies, dark fish, croaker, ruffe, sternna, sultana, anchovy, horse mackerel and sprat were considered commercial fish.

Not much time passed, but the situation changed dramatically. Today, almost the last three species of fish (anchovy, mackerel and sprat) remain commercially available in the Black Sea. All the rest became so small in number that their commercial catch had to be abandoned. And amateur fishermen still come across such valuable species on fishing rods, and not so rarely.

Fishing in the Black Sea

Today, fishing on the Black Sea is radically different from fishing on a lake or river. There are different fishing methods:

  • The old way of being a tyrant.

  • Classic spinning fishing with wobblers and jigs.
  • Fishing with float rods.

In the summer, during the peak holiday season, there is not really much fishing to be done. And all because the fish lie deep at the bottom of the sea due to excessively heated water. The lack of oxygen leads, for example, to the fact that the goby approaches the shore - to the delight of fishermen with fishing rods. Although in fact it is not recommended to eat such fish.

In the off-season, fishing on the Black Sea can be very effective. It’s worth stocking up on a feeder rod for this – this fishing tackle is designed for bottom fishing. A distinctive feature of a feeder from a spinning rod is the presence of special replaceable tips with different degrees of rigidity. Depending on what type of fish you plan to fish for, the feeder class is selected: heavy, medium or light. For a wide area you will need the heaviest feeder. To catch small fish in a quiet place, a light rod is useful.

For coastal fishing, the Bolognese fishing method is best suited. In this case, you will have to buy a telescopic fishing rod equipped with an open-type spinning reel and guide rings. This equipment allows you to make long casts. This method is especially relevant for catching fairly large specimens of marine fish.

The prey of a novice fisherman on the Black Sea, as a rule, are those fish whose bite is active throughout the daylight hours. Well, who doesn’t catch a goby in the Black Sea? Yes, everyone catches, without even suspecting that their catch contains not only gobies, but even other types of fish that successfully masquerade as gobies - greenfinches and blennies. In color and shape, they are practically no different from the bull. Dogfish are inedible fish; greenfinches also cannot “boast” of their taste.

What kind of fish is caught in the Black Sea

The waters of the Black Sea are home to both local and migratory fish species that are “swimming” here. Migratory fish include: herring, Danube trumpet, sturgeon species, eel, sterlet.

The migration of herring is observed in the Black Sea several times - the fish exit to spawn and return to their permanent habitat for wintering. Therefore, on the Black Sea, the best period for herring fishing is October. They catch herring not far from the shore from a boat, using a “tyrant” or a float fishing rod.

Anchovy is especially popular among local fishermen; you can catch two types of it in Black Thief:

  • The Azov anchovy winters in the Black Sea, so local fishermen “guard” it in the Kerch Strait;

  • Black Sea anchovy is caught throughout the year, as it lives here permanently.

In summer, tuna, bonito and mackerel come to the Black Sea. The best way to catch these types of fish is by trolling from a boat using wobblers. Finding a place where bonito gathers is not difficult - the fish is located where the water “boils” and the seagulls are circling.

The permanent species of Black Sea fish include: mackerel, mullet, pelengas, syphilis, sharpnose, red mullet, sea ruffe, bluefish, rock perch, garfish and flounder.

How to fish in the Black Sea

Despite the fact that fishing methods are changing, new fishing gear is appearing, on the Black Sea, as before, preference is given to old, proven fishing methods. Almost all breeds of Black Sea fish can be caught using such old “grandfather’s” equipment as “tyrant”. We hasten to dissuade the skeptics - this is not such a simple fishing tackle as it seems at first glance, therefore the choice of the size and color of the hook, the size of the fishing line, the color of the feather or hologram must be approached with special care.

It is also worth considering that certain Black Sea fish bite on a specific “tyrant”, so you will have to purchase several types of such equipment. As you can see, this is a consumable item for fishing, because it is better to buy a “tyrant” ready-made and not engage in amateur activities. To go out to sea, you need to stock up on several tyrants and weights, since most fish species have sharp teeth, and your tackle can be damaged after just a few casts.

Seasoned fishermen recommend installing a fishing line of a universal size on the “tyrant” - diameter 0.3 mm. Depending on what kind of fish you want to catch, you can use thinner fishing line on the leashes. For spring horse mackerel, a fishing line with a thickness of 0.1 mm is suitable, and for herring and bluefish - up to 0.25 mm. It is worth considering that the thickness of the fishing line affects the number of bites - the thicker the fishing line, the fewer there will be.

Fishing for garfish in the Black Sea

Fishing for garfish continues from early spring until the first frost. Garfish are caught from 4 pm to early morning, mainly with float tackle. You can fish both from the shore and from a boat. When walking, garfish do not go to depth during this period of time - as a rule, the fish likes to swim at a depth of up to 2 meters.

Fishing at sea. Peculiarities

With the arrival of cold weather, the nature of fishing in the Black Sea changes somewhat. The main features of winter fishing are:

  1. Strong winds and even storms are often observed.
  2. It's easy to miss a bite because of the waves.
  3. A strong wind usually blows from the sea.
  4. Hooking must be done as carefully as possible.
  5. The cast must be made as far as possible.

Important advice: depending on the waves and wind strength, it is necessary to weigh down the tackle or vice versa.

During this period, it is most successful to fish out:

  1. Mullet.
  2. Horse mackerel.
  3. Anchovy.
  4. Sea crucian carp.
  5. Garfish.

During the winter months, you need to be especially careful when choosing gear. You can use any suitable for sea fishing, especially spinning rods and bottom fishing rods.

The main requirement for winter gear is a powerful fishing rod and hooks numbered five to seven. You can fish from the shore, pier or rocks (the latter requires special training and experience). During this period, it is much more effective to use such baits that live in these places. Ideal are small pieces of fresh fish (preferably anchovy), sea worms, shrimp and twisters.

Important tip: you can try boiled shrimp on garfish.

Just a few years ago, catching crucian carp with a spinning rod was not considered serious fishing, but recently the situation has changed. The incredible variety of gear and lures has made spinning fishing incredibly popular among anglers.

Many fishermen cannot even imagine that crucian carp can be caught using a spinning rod. In this case, we are not talking about a feeder, donk or long-distance casting gear. This is regular fishing with microjig, miniature spinners or jigs, which can easily replace jig heads. All that remains is to find out how to assemble a spinning tackle for crucian carp, what baits to use and how to achieve a good bite.

Despite many contradictions, crucian carp can be caught with a spinning rod

How to assemble a spinning rod for catching crucian carp

Let's start with the rod. It is best to choose ultraite or light.

That is, the spinning test can vary from 1 to 7 g. There is no need for heavier gear, because you will have to catch crucian carp using miniature baits.

The main thing is that the structure of the spinning rod is rigid and elastic, and the tip is as flexible and sensitive to neat bites as possible. This will allow you to better feel the wiring and play of the nozzle.

You will also need an inertia-free reel with a 1000 or 1500 spool. There are no special requirements for it, so a budget model is also suitable. The spinning rod must be equipped in a special way. The point is that the bait should be as close to the bottom as possible.

We recommend using only braided fishing line, since the sensitivity of the gear comes to the fore. Fluorocarbon is also acceptable (it is less noticeable in water), for example, as a leash. The main thing is that the tensile strength of the fishing line is from 2 to 3 kg.

When mounting a spinning rod on crucian carp, you should use braided fishing line

Most often, the spinning rod equipment for catching crucian carp resembles a design with a retractable leash. A sinker weighing from 0.5 to 3 grams is tied to the end of the fishing line. We step back about 30 cm and tie a leash about 10-15 cm long. Now all that remains is to attach either a hook, a tungsten jig (about 2 grams in weight), or a miniature jig head weighing 1.5-2 grams.

Lures for spinning carp fishing

This kind of fishing is both modern and the most sporting. Indeed, a spinning fisherman must be well prepared both mentally and physically.

The greatest catchability, judging by experience, on the Black Sea coast can be observed immediately after sunset and right up to darkness. What to observe there - it’s better to participate.

Night fishing along the lunar path will also bring good luck (although it won’t hurt to stock up on a headlamp), although the bite is somewhat weaker at night and in the pre-dawn time. They fish from the shore with a spinning rod.

Preferably in quiet, deserted places, away from beaches and bustle. The bottom is best pebbly and rocky.

You can use stones protruding from the water along the banks.

  • The rod is stronger, up to 2 meters long. The reel is inertialess. As a tackle - a braided cord with a good breaking margin, medium-sized hooks.
  • The baits used are silicone and wobblers. For scorpionfish, for example, the best thing is a rubber octopus. When the coastline is moderately loaded with stones, it is better to use wobblers, from those models that go closer to the bottom. Apply the silicone closer to the rocks where the fish may be hiding, alternating with jerks and then taking up the slack in the fishing line (with a pull). Hooking is done immediately after bites, giving the fish a good taste of the bait.

The process of fishing in the Black Sea

Many people are sure that fishing in the Black Sea can only be done from a boat or boat. Fishing from the shore on the Black Sea is, in fact, also relevant. It is important to choose the right place for fishing and choose the appropriate gear and equipment.

Moreover, here you can fish equally successfully both from the shore and from the breakwaters too. This type of fishing does not require excessive costs for the purchase of fishing equipment. As a rule of fishing, you can limit yourself to a regular donka with two or one hook for fishing. The length of the rod depends on the distance to the fishing spot you have chosen and must withstand the weight of the load. An inertia-free reel is best suited here. Hook size – No. 7, 8, with a long shank.

Spinning fishing in winter on the Black Sea

Today, coastal fishing with spinning gear in the Black Sea is very popular and relevant.

Experienced spinning anglers who practice sea fishing know very well that many types of fish respond more readily to bait that slowly moves along the very bottom, simulating a wounded, weakened fish. Using the movement of artificial bait with stops, an angler can effectively fish a fairly large water area and thanks to this, the likelihood of biting and catching fish at least doubles.

Daytime fishing, as well as fishing in the evening and morning hours, has long been used by fishermen to catch all types of fish. However, night fishing in
the Black Sea in winter
is entertainment for those fishermen who love the exotic. At such moments, a person is alone with Mother Nature. But today there are more and more amateurs who want to show their skills and test themselves in the night sea, where they can often measure their strength with real trophy fish. And today, more and more lovers of such exotic things want to fish not in closed reservoirs, but on the wide seashore, where the opportunities are much wider. This is already a new direction in fishing, which is gaining popularity among vacationers on the Black Sea.

What gear is best for this kind of fishing? Experienced spinningists who know a lot about sea coastal fishing in winter recommend using a spinning rod that is about three meters long with a dough of 25-50 grams and a medium fast action. Local fishermen usually use a two-parter here. It is better for visitors to have a telespin with the above test. Since such a spinning rod can easily fit into a travel bag. Its length, with rare exceptions, is no more than 50 cm.

If you look at it, there is practically no big difference between telescopic and plug-in spinning rods; the whole difference is in size and ease of transportation on an airplane or train. Moreover, telespins of good quality are already produced by many manufacturers of fishing equipment today.

For coastal fishing, you need gear that can meet all the features and requirements of such fishing. Most fishermen use spinning rods, which can be used to make quick hooks in cases where there is a sharp blow to the bait or it stops, and also have the ability to perform smooth twitching.

Shore fishing in the Black Sea

Some amateurs still do it today with the help of a leash rod. However, many anglers believe that fishing with such gear is not comfortable and very difficult. We cannot ignore the fact that some species of fish react well at night to the slightest vibrations, which, for example, can be created by a wobbler. And in order not to be left without a catch during fishing, you have to re-equip the equipment. At such a moment, the method of fishing by twitching with a nozzle changes to another more active method, namely playing with a small wobbler, which is carried out using a spinning rod.

As for the quality and parameters of the reel, they must correspond to spinning fishing. It is best to use a spinning reel. But at sea, such reels must have anti-corrosion properties of the material from which they are made. Also, after fishing at sea, such a reel after contact with sea water must be rinsed with regular running water under the tap. Otherwise she won't last long.

Fishing with a spinning rod from the shore in the Black Sea,

you need slightly different equipment than for a conventional spinning rod. Many fishermen use the so-called conditionally sinking braided line for fishing in the Black Sea; it is less susceptible to the effects of coastal waves. A sinker for sea spinning fishing is usually stick-shaped and weighs 20-40 grams; the sinker also has a soldered swivel with a clasp. The bait or attachment in such fishing allows the fisherman to use 2 options for catching fish. The first option is possible using an offset hook, on which a vibrating tail or twister is placed. In the second option, an earthworm or sea worm, sliced fish or shrimp are planted. The hook is usually placed above the load at a distance of 30 cm using the drop-shot system. You can also place a small active wobbler on a small leash, which will be attractive to sea predators due to its noise effect or vibration.

The upper part of the whip signals a bite; during night fishing, a firefly measuring 3.5 x 4.5 mm is installed on it. Before fishing, it is secured with two thermal cambrics. Such a firefly makes it possible to observe a tulip using a spinning rod. At night, fishing in the sea usually takes place 40-50 m from the shore, among coastal algae and stones.

As for braided line, usually for night fishing a line with a diameter of 0.14 to 0.17 mm is used, it all depends on what kind of prey the fisherman is counting on. Before fishing, you can prepare leashes with hooks of various lengths and thicknesses in advance. Such leashes are usually made 5-15 cm long. For leashes, monofilament with a diameter of 0.17-0.22 mm is usually used, the hook on the leash is usually set to No. 3.5-4 according to the international classification. It is better if it is an offset hook, on which the bait is subsequently attached.

To prepare for fishing, you need to fulfill the following conditions, choose shoes and clothes that are suitable for fishing on slippery rocks, and also select a set of necessary equipment for fishing at night. As with any night fishing, the angler is recommended to have a headlamp, as well as an extractor and landing net.

If in more northern latitudes everything is subject to the laws of winter, then in more southern latitudes at sea it is quite possible to fish from the shore. However, it is worth remembering that among the marine ichthyofauna there are species that can even harm the health of the fisherman.

First of all, such dangerous fish include the stingray, which has a poisonous spike at the tip of its tail. An injection from such a thorn, of course, will not lead to death, but it is quite capable of sending a fisherman to a hospital bed for a couple of weeks. The same painful sting of the scorpionfish (sea ruffe); this fish has poisonous glands at the base of the rays of its fins. The prick of such a thorn is very painful for the fisherman. There is also a small fish called a dragon in the Black Sea. It skillfully camouflages itself in the sand, and if you step on or run into your hand on the spines of the dragon’s dorsal fin, trouble cannot be avoided. In addition, you can suffer from a katran while catching it. This small Black Sea shark also has a poisonous spine, which experienced fishermen, when catching this fish, immediately remove using pliers
