Cartoons, like films, are divided into genres. Anime is no exception! What is this? Japanese cartoons, which for the most part are intended for viewing by teenagers and adults. Their distinctive feature is the original portrayal of the characters and the unusualness of the storyline. As a rule, they are rarely full-length and are most often released in series. The “progenitors” of Japanese cartoons are usually comic books, which the Japanese call manga, as well as computer games and sometimes classical literature.
Development of masculinity
Shonen are cartoons intended for teenage boys 12-18 years old. As a rule, they have a very dynamic development of events, and the plot revolves around male friendship, sports competitions and martial arts. These cartoons are also literally imbued with humor. Female characters in shonen are drawn deliberately sexual to promote the correct sexual development of adolescents. A striking example of such cartoons are anime such as “Love, Hina” and “Rosary + Vampire”.
By target audience[edit]
- Kodomo,[1] completely Kodomomuke manga
(Japanese: 子供向け漫画) and
Kodomomuke anime
(Japanese: 子供向けアニメ) - manga and anime intended for children (under 12 years old). A distinctive feature of this genre is its “childishness”; there is no (sometimes simply greatly simplified) ideological content. You can also add a characteristic pattern here. Often Kodomo anime is very close to the European or American animation school and is very different from other types of anime not only in drawing, but also in the construction of the series. Moreover, an inexperienced eye is unlikely to distinguish the work of Japanese masters from other works of the same type. However, all animated series of this kind, provided that they were created in Japan, are considered to be one of the varieties of anime. Kodomo is usually drawn without any signs of harshness or rudeness, and is often of an entertaining nature. Examples of such works are “Maya the Bee”, “Grandizer”, “Speed Racer”.[2]
- Shonen is an anime for older boys and young men (from 12 to 16-18 years old). The main features of the genre: rapid development and pronounced dynamism of the plot (especially in comparison with shojo). The works contain many humorous scenes, based on the themes of strong male friendship, any kind of rivalry in life, sports or martial arts (for example, Dragon Ball Z
,
Rurouni Kenshin
).[3]
Girls and women in shonen anime are often portrayed as exaggeratedly beautiful and sexy, such exaggeration serves to best demonstrate the masculinity of the main characters. Alternatively, many beautiful girls try to attract the attention of one hero ( Tenchi Muyo!,
Love
Hina
,
Rosario+Vampire
).[3]. There are a number of varieties of the shonen genre: sentai, which follows the adventures of a small, standing team of characters (traditionally 5 people) fighting against someone or something; - Spokon, which tells about young athletes who achieve success by cultivating the will to win[2];
- a harem in which a male character is surrounded by a large number of women.
For older boys (for example, students) there is a separate genre of “seinen”.
- Shoujo - anime and manga for older girls and young women (from 12 to 16-18 years old).[2] The plot of shoujo anime, as a rule, contains love relationships of varying degrees of intimacy, depending on the age of the target audience, and much attention is paid to the development of character images.[4] The following characteristic features can be noted: exaggerated conventionality of the drawing (grotesque-humorous) or, conversely, refined-romantic. Male characters stand out due to their external appearance ( Weiss Kreuz
).[4]
A subgenre of shoujo is maho shoujo
, which follows the adventures of girls endowed with magical powers (such as Sailor Moon).[2]
Less common is a harem
, when one girl is surrounded by guys. (Ouran High School Host Club)
- Seinen is an anime for adult men (from 18 to 25-40 years old). Characteristic features of this genre are elements of psychology, satire, eroticism, and more attention is paid to character development.[5] Seinen is sometimes confused with shonen, but works in this genre are more realistic and darker ( Maison Ikkoku
,
Ghost in the Shell
), and the plot is not tied to a romantic story, although a love story may be present (
Monster
,
Berserk
). In rare cases, seinen anime or manga are aimed at businessmen over the age of 35-40.
- Josei is an anime or manga for women.[6] The plot most often describes the daily life of a woman living in Japan. As a rule, part of the story is devoted to events from the school life of the main character (it is at this time that she meets other characters and the plot begins). The drawing style used in josei is a little more realistic than shoujo, but retains some of its characteristic features. Again, unlike shojo, love relationships are depicted in josei in a much more elaborate manner ( Paradise Kiss
,
Honey and Clover
).

From humor to drama
Comedy. Such cartoons are full of humorous scenes, funny jokes and parodies.
Story. Such pictures reflect real historical events that have ever occurred in a particular country.
Drama. Among anime, this genre is very rare. As a rule, these cartoons are based on a tragic plot and have practically no happy ending.
A look into the future
Science fiction. These animated films are based on events in the near future and contacts with alien beings. Often the action takes place in space. The heroes of such cartoons use blasters and other elements of non-existent weapons.
Space opera. A cartoon that is a variation of anime in the science fiction genre. The plot is usually based on wars between galaxies.
Fur. The main characters in the cartoon are huge robots, and various self-propelled mechanisms are widely used.
Cyberpunk and steampunk are anime genres with a future theme. Moreover, in cyberpunk cartoons, all processes and actions are controlled by computers. The plot of such paintings is mostly sad and pessimistic. But the steampunk genre implies alternative realities. The action in such cartoons takes place in our time, but in a parallel reality. As a rule, this anime depicts airships, steam planes, steam locomotives - in a word, retro technology.
Mecha Sentai. In such anime cartoons, a group of main characters controls complex mechanisms or robots - there is a battle with evil forces.
Might and Magic
Maho-shojo. This is a shoujo anime in which the roles of the main characters are divided between girls with magical skills. A thin thread running through the plot is the problem of girls growing up, as well as romantic relationships with the opposite sex.
Calm down. Such cartoons are quite rare and tell the story of overcoming oneself with the help of willpower. As a rule, the plot revolves around sports.
Fantasy. If we look at the list of anime by genre, this will include all the cartoons whose characters are associated with magic. In such animated films, the action takes place in worlds that are devoid of technology, but are full of magic and warriors who deftly wield bladed weapons. It is in them that elves, orcs, dragons, gnomes and other magical creatures “live”.
Dobutsu. This is a relatively new genre of anime, the main characters are various furry creatures.

When I was just learning the basics of anime, I was often confused about genres, so here is a detailed description of all genres with examples.
Types of anime.
1) Kodomo anime is an anime intended for children.
2) Shonen anime - anime intended for older boys and young men (from 12 to 16-18 years old).
4) Shojo anime - anime intended for older girls and young women (from 12 to 16-18 years old).
5)Seinen anime is anime intended for young men.
6) Jo anime is anime aimed at young women.
7).Full-length film - anime intended to be shown in
cinema. Rarely shorter than 50 minutes, the usual length is from 60 to 90 minutes.
8) OAV/OVA - anime created specifically for release on video can be both serial (more often) and single. Currently, the standard OAV length is 23-25 minutes, but in the 1980s and early 1990s there were both hour-long and longer OAVs.
9) A short film is an anime intended for showing in a cinema. It's shorter than 30 minutes, so it's always shown together with other similar films.
Anime genres.
1) Mecha - an anime about robots and complex mechanisms similar to humanoid robots.

This period is characterized by the beginning of a revolution in technical means of transportation - the appearance of airships, airplanes, steam locomotives, and steamships. Technology, however, is still perceived by ordinary people not as something familiar and banal, but as something miraculous and, often, demonic.
