Call

Ringu

  • Japan, 1998.
  • Horror, thriller, detective.
  • Duration: 96 minutes.
  • IMDb: 7.2.

Still from the film “The Ring”
Young journalist Reiko Asakawa, together with her ex-husband, is trying to investigate the case of an unusual tape. Those who watched this recording receive a call from a stranger and say that in a week they will die. And people actually die from cardiac arrest. Among the victims of the tape is Asakawa's niece, so the heroine feels that she is obliged to get to the bottom of the truth. The situation is further aggravated by the fact that the journalist’s little son also saw the fatal film.

Hideo Nakata's film revolutionized the horror genre and fueled international audiences' interest in Asian horror. The director deliberately abandoned the happy ending: in the finale, the heroes’ attempts to come to an agreement with evil lead to nothing, and the circle (which is why the original title means both “bell” and “ring”) is closed.

The image of Sadako, a ghost girl with black flowing hair covering her face, came from traditional Japanese mythology, and after “The Ring” it became a cult all over the world and spawned many imitators. Although this is not the only thing that frightens the picture: it is distinguished by a skillfully created atmosphere of suspense and alienation.

The gloomy color scheme, the incessant rain, the silence in the deserted rooms - all this emphasizes the loneliness of Asakawa and her husband, their self-absorption. Moreover, it was no coincidence that the heroes were made into divorced spouses.

In 2002, an American remake of “The Ring” by Gore Verbinski was released. The merit of the American creators is that they not only copied the original, but also combined the typical features of Japanese horror films with the cultural traditions of their country.

Thus, production designer Tom Duffield drew inspiration from the paintings of Andrew Wyeth, who unusually accurately conveyed the feeling of loneliness and hopelessness in his works. And Verbinski borrowed some of the visual techniques for framing the frame from the horror master Alfred Hitchcock.

Damnation (2002)

Once upon a time, in this house, a husband killed his wife, and their son disappeared without a trace. Before her death, the unfortunate woman managed to curse the murderer and the place where the last nightmare of her life took place. The picture is not replete with special effects and excessive aggression, but the tense plot allows us to classify it as one of the scariest Japanese horror films.

"Woman with a Slit Mouth"

In one of the Japanese towns, children begin to mysteriously disappear. Then a rumor begins to spread among the residents about a woman with a slit mouth, who terrified the people of Japan more than 30 years ago. Hoping to find the missing children, two school teachers begin their own investigation.

An excellent picture that tells the viewer an interesting and entertaining story. An eerie and at the same time addictive atmosphere develops over 90 minutes and keeps the viewer in suspense all this time. You feel like a little child who is being told another horror story. The story seems to be terrifying, but at the same time you want to wait for the end, to find out how it all ends.

Perhaps most frightening is the fact that the film is based on a very real story. In Japan, there is an urban legend (kuchisake-onna) that tells the story of a woman who was killed by her husband and later returned to the world of the living as an evil, vengeful spirit. At the turn of the 1970s and 1980s, this legend caused a real surge of panic. Classes at some schools were canceled, parents dropped off and picked up their children from school, and police patrols were on campus around the clock. The cause of such chaos was an incident that occurred in 1968. Then the skull of a young woman was found in Japan. Her mouth was cut from ear to ear. But why was this incident remembered only after 10 years? Perhaps the catalyst was an incident that occurred on June 21, 1979 in Himeji. A mentally ill woman named Mayumi Sawago was arrested by local law enforcement authorities. The girl was wandering down the street with a kitchen knife, which she had previously used to cut her mouth to her ears.

How were you scared?

Japan, as mentioned above, is not Europe and especially not America, where everything is relatively clear, even if we are talking about different countries. Japanese horror mixes a lot of components, taken from both the West and the East, sometimes in completely crazy combinations. If you still try to highlight the key features of the Japanese school, then it is worth mentioning the following.

“Suicide Club” is a cult film of the early 2000s, playing up the problem of suicide in modern Japanese society (remember that Japan is one of the first in the world in the number of suicides), and combining horror, social satire and black comedy.

Firstly, Japanese horror ranges over a very wide range, from bloodless, purely psychological films about ghosts and spirits, to surreal trash films filled with the most sophisticated violence. Secondly, a completely different approach to the depiction of violence, where it exists: in Japanese horror violence is not only abundant, but also, so to speak, banalized - there is so much of it that it is not something specially emphasized. Thirdly, and most interestingly, Japan was the first country in which horror films began to be massively placed in the context of modern technology. It is this aspect that strongly distinguishes the Japanese school from others: if in Europe technology in horror is either not present at all (due to the historical setting, for example) or does not stand out (due to the fact that history does not depend on them), then in Japan (one of Let me remind you that the most technologically developed countries in the world were able to firmly associate high-tech with mysticism, despite the fact that outwardly these categories are weakly related to each other.

It soon becomes clear that the death of the patient is far from the worst event of that day.

Very Japanese horror: 7 films that make you really scared

Critics have noted the paradoxical mixing of genres for a horror film in Takashi Miike's Screen Test: the melodramatic plot of a family drama turns into a brutal thriller that can shock less than the most impressionable viewers. The picture is practically devoid of mysticism and traditional demons and ghosts, but it is replete with the horrors of everyday life and variations on the theme of sexual oppression of women in Japan. This picture was undoubtedly influenced by the rich national tradition of soft porn with sadomasochistic features and victimized victims. After several scandalous screenings at film festivals, where the film caused indignation and anger among Western women's rights activists, Takashi Miike became the second most popular Japanese director in Europe after Takeshi Kitano. And Quentin Tarantino called Screen Test one of the best films since 1992.

Plot. Widower Aoyama accepts the offer of an old friend, a film producer, to use screen tests for the new film as screenings. While still looking through the girls' resumes, Aoyama falls in love with one of them, a young, former ballerina, the beautiful Azami Yamazaki. After a night spent together in a hotel, the girl suddenly disappears, and Aoyama, distraught with love, tries to find her and comes to the ballet school where Yamazaki once danced. From the memoirs of a dance teacher, the viewer learns about the bullying the girl was subjected to. For about half of the film, the viewer is perplexed as to why “Screen Tests” hooked Tarantino and when this psychological family drama will turn into the promised bloody thriller. But very soon it becomes clear that the silent beauty with whom Aoyama fell madly in love turns out to be a real sadist, ready to take revenge for childhood traumas with rage and sophistication worthy of a restless evil spirit - a yurei.

Source of evil. Miike chose as the object of evil a young beautiful woman who, according to Freud, was disfigured as a child. Sexual violence, the fetish of childishness in women of any age (it’s not for nothing that all traditional women’s names end with the hieroglyph “ko” - “child”) had an undeniable influence on “Screen Test”.

A terrible scene. Sitting in a chair at home, Aoyama drinks whiskey, into which the girl has already mixed a paralyzing drug. The man hallucinates and sees meetings with Yamazaki, where she tells how her relatives and stepfather bullied her, sees his dead wife who is trying to dissuade him from meeting with Yamazaki. He also sees a man without a tongue, legs or fingers, hidden in a bag in his beloved’s room. Aoyama wakes up to find Azami nearby, wearing a leather butcher's apron and elbow-length black rubber gloves. She carries with her a set of acupuncture needles, which she sticks into her boyfriend’s solar plexus and eyes, saying in a childish voice: “Deeper, deeper, deeper.” Even as she cuts off the hapless man's legs with jagged wire, Azami looks like it's all child's play to her, and her satisfied face constantly appears in the frame. Top 10 Japanese horror films of the last 15 years

“I screamed throughout the entire cinema hall in fear!” – ARD author Zhanna Idymova once told about her first experience of watching a Japanese horror film. It seems like the movie “The Ring”...

Japanese horror films are attractive due to their presentation style, and the scary girl climbing out of the well is simply a masterpiece of suspense.

You definitely can’t deny this to the Japanese. Deadly pale faces with inevitably large, frightening eyes, long wet hair covering the face, and a special, incomprehensible to Western viewer, and therefore even more attractive depressing atmosphere - Japanese horror films are significantly different from other world horror films.

For more than fifteen years, the best Japanese horrors - Japanese horror (J-horror, J-horror) have been confidently winning the attention of horror movie lovers all over the world. Unlike Americans and Europeans, well-mannered residents of the Land of the Rising Sun do not allow themselves to splash out negative emotions on others.

Therefore, Japanese horror seems lighter and at the same time oppressive. Without copious splashes of blood and dismembered bodies, Japanese horror directors know how to create dark, violent films with apocalyptic contours. The greatest emphasis is usually placed on the psychological component of horror and the potential expectation of an unexpected outcome. It is this thriller orientation that forms the world army of fans of Made in Japan horror.

Permanent characters of J-horror are ghosts, poltergeists and yokai - mystical humanoid creatures with different characters, who came into cinema from Japanese folklore. Japanese folk and world magic are also used: exorcism, foresight, shamanic rituals. The wet girl from the videotape not only brought the famous film by Hideo Nakata the highest box office in the world among films of this genre, but also successfully appeared in the South Korean and American counterparts.

This is a yurei - an ethereal spirit, making itself felt with heavy breathing and heartbreaking groans behind the wall, with quick steps in the corridor. In general, the image of a long-haired girl with oriental features in a long white robe is a kind of calling card of the Japanese horror film, which appears in a significant part of these films and is actively exploited by the world's horror story authors. It seems that there is nothing scary in this image, but a terrible unpleasant feeling inside the stomach appears from just looking at the official poster of the film, not to mention the picture itself.

Manga comics, anime cartoons and unsurpassed horror films - this is Japan's contribution to world cinema. The irresistible desire to watch Japanese horrors to the end can be explained quite simply. Not a single self-respecting director of Japanese horror will leave a grateful viewer without a solution, nor will he disappoint with a blurry and unfinished ending of the film. There is always food for thought and a strong desire to better understand the mystical facet of Japanese culture.

ARD presents its top Japanese horror films of the last 15 years.

In the Russian translation, the film is called “The Curse,” although it has nothing in common with the series of films of the same name by Takashi Shimizu. This film was directed by another talented director, Koji Shiraishi, who usually shoots in the mockumentary genre, that is, pseudo-documentary.

The fatal beauty Tomie is the happiness and destruction of men. She is a demon in the flesh and makes obedient slaves out of guys. Besides, she is immortal. "Tomie"

Tomie is a demon of lust (something like a succubus) with incredible beauty. Tomie can make a man do anything. The plot of the film tells about a young girl named Tsukiko Izumisawa. Tsukiko is forced to fight Tomie for the soul of her boyfriend, who has fallen under the control of an evil demon of lust. Will the young girl be able to defeat Tomie? Will sincere love conquer lust and debauchery?

The picture evokes fear due to its atmosphere, which frightens and at the same time enchants. The atmosphere, in turn, is created by a delightful soundtrack that fits perfectly into the overall concept of the film.
