Zander fishing in October 2021

We catch everything

There have been a considerable number of different civilizations on our Earth, but many of them have sunk into oblivion. But still, the most ancient civilization, Rybolovnaya, lives and flourishes to this day. Surely every man has a “fisherman gene”. For some, it sleeps serenely for the time being, while for others, it has been pulsating powerfully since childhood, giving a considerable incentive to enjoy life.

But is it so easy to become a happy person - a truly skilled fisherman? Is it really worth just buying an armful of gear, learning a little how to use it, finding fish and filling your fish tank with it? Is this really true fishing happiness? No, this is not quite the right way to this magical land. To begin with, a person must come to his sense of Nature. And it doesn’t matter whether he absorbed this feeling with his mother’s milk, nurtured it within himself over many years, or simply received it as a gift from Mother Nature.

A river or lake may one day make it clear that you belong, that they trust you and give you a sincere scene from their life. This could be pike spawning in shallow water. This could be an asp fight in clear, fast streams. Or maybe just some kind of roe deer that came out to the river bank and was not at all afraid of you. And if you didn’t want to take a stone or a stick, if you didn’t have an uncontrollable desire to kill, and you just don’t breathe, for fear of interfering with the natural mystery, then Nature has accepted you, it’s time to buy gear.

Even if it’s still potential, even if it’s still in its infancy, you are already a real fisherman. If fishing truly captivates you, if you begin to live according to its “concepts,” when your head contains only hooks, floats and wobblers, then you will be surprised to understand that life is beautiful and amazing.

We have our own language and our own concepts, as the masters say: “Fishing unites us into a single tribe, which has its own laws and even language. Just try to describe exactly, so that everyone can understand, in simple literary language, at least the gathering of bream after a three-hour wait. It won't work out!

And on the reservoir in front of the water surface, everyone is equal, where did yesterday’s hard worker go, and let’s say the director of the plant, together casting fishing rods into the pre-dawn haze of fog spreading over the “pecking water”, with itching and buzzing myriads of hungry mosquito throats!? Here we are all just fishermen, and with virtually no sleep, hastily sipping tea, but extremely happy, we enjoy every moment, the mystery of communication with Nature.

After all, there are always real miracles around on a river or lake! On a pond, the right spinning rod, fishing rod, feeder, bait and groundbait, adjusted to your needs, also work wonders. And it doesn’t matter at all whether it was all bought for a lot, a lot of money, or collected and arranged on the knee of a house or river, the important thing is that it will be a working thing and will catch, and how!

And if you can’t catch anything at all, then there will always be an experienced fisherman on the shore who will always tell you how and what to catch, especially in the evening by the fire under the fishermen’s “hundred grams” that warm you up in the autumn cold. After all, on the shore you meet such unique people that, be healthy, they will tell you things that you just have time to write down!

And about fishing with a spinning rod and a fishing rod, methods of bait and bait, the secrets of fishing with a boat and mugs and much, much more. However, a person who decides to take up fishing or simply move to another, higher level has a very difficult time.

By letting a sea of other people's experience pass through you while you gain your own fishing experience, you will often throw a lot of time and money down the drain. And often the reason for this is not entirely correct fishing literature, television, and now the Internet, where the categorical recommendations of “experts” are strongly tied to the interests of fishing brands. This is especially noticeable in the many faces of spinning rods and specifically in the boundless world of spinning lures. But it’s okay, don’t despair, everything will come with experience, because every persistent fisherman is waiting for his big trophy.

And in principle, it will not be so important whether it is a large pike, catfish or pike perch. And even though we fishermen are often teased, they say, you are quietly crazy. Don’t pay attention, “non-fishermen” live differently, think differently, relax differently, make plans for vacations and weekends differently. And if we need to go to the dacha, then we’ll dig up some worms at the same time; if my wife wants to go to the beach, then okay – here we’ll find a cool whirlpool that’s hidden behind the cape. Do you need to go to the forest to pick mushrooms or berries? That’s also normal; at the same time you might run into an unfamiliar lake of crucian carp.

People in our “division” arrive every year, it happens, and you get ready until midnight, “you’re going to play” for an hour and get to the water. And there, especially good places are already occupied according to the principle “I fish for a week, then my brother fishes for a week, then me again.” If you are not too lazy and walk along the shore, you can find a division based on territoriality.

Here the boys from such and such a village are catching, there from another, and there the townspeople are sitting on their campaign, having escaped for the weekend. But it’s okay, there’s enough room for everyone, we’re all fishermen, practically fellow countrymen. This is understandable, of course everyone wants to relax, cook energetically valuable fish soup in nature, and get away from stuffy cities. But it’s impossible to occupy all the places, you can get to good places on foot, and where there are no entrances and there are practically no people, that means there are more fish. If you have the desire and patience, you won’t be left without a catch!

Features of catching pike perch on the Oka

Oka still pleases fishermen with good catches, even despite the strong pressure. Many active spinning anglers are especially interested in such popular prey as pike perch; many fishermen consider pike perch to be an easy prey, believing that the main thing is to find it. However, this is a fairly common misconception. And if we are talking about pike perch living in the waters of the Oka, then here this predator is very unpredictable.

So, for example, in the same sections of the river, it can bite on almost every cast and rushes to any bait.
Or everything could be exactly the opposite. The echo sounder shows the presence of prey, but the pike perch does not show itself in any way. In a word fishing for pike perch in Oka
can give different results even in the same weather.

On the Oka, pike perch can be unpredictable in spring, summer and autumn. However, if you constantly fish in the same places in the reservoir, the fisherman will accumulate a certain number of his catch points. An experienced spinning player may have about a dozen or even more such points, and the distance from edge to edge can be 15 or even 20 km. And here you clearly cannot do without a car.

Every year, at the end of spawning, pike perch returns to their usual habitats. This usually lasts from the second half of May to mid-June, and even in mid-June the fanged fish can bite very actively. But not always the areas where you caught yesterday will give you a good catch today, so you should move to other points. This means that you will need to run around your points sometimes several times a day. This will make it possible to understand at what time and where the pike perch prefers to go out.

Features of catching pike perch on the Oka

, largely depend on the bottom topography. This river has a very heterogeneous topography and the fanged one can take in holes or go out to water and feed there. Or it can climb into snarled places where it is almost impossible to catch a predator.

On the Oka River, the most promising places for catching pike perch are the edges. In many sections of the river, the first edge is located 15-20 m from the edge of the bank. Usually in these places, where the banks are steep and high, medium-sized pike perch (up to 1.6 kg) come out to feed. But it’s not a fact that you will find it there; it can change its place from year to year. There can be many reasons for this, for example a decrease in water level.

Another place where pike perch likes to feed is sand spits hidden under water. As a rule, they are located at some distance from the shore and run synchronously from it for about 40-70 m. Usually the farthest streamers give the best results. Such scythes can only be reached by throwing away. Bites generally do not occur above the spit, but when the bait is pulled down the slope. Most often, the fanged one is located on the slopes of the spit or at its base.

An excellent place to find pike perch are the entrances and exits of holes. If on average the Oka channel has a depth of about 7 m, then the pits can be up to 12 m deep, and the entrances and exits from them are 5-7 m. But fishing such places is very difficult and difficult. At the bottom of some pits and at the exits from them, there are many snags and, for example, jigging here is not particularly comfortable and, moreover, expensive. Donks are thrown to the bottom of other pits, and it is impossible to fish there with a spinning rod. Especially on weekends.

Lures

Fishing for pike perch on the Oka

, involves not only knowledge of the places where a predator can be found, but also the ability to select the right bait, taking into account the special capriciousness of Oka pike perch. So at the very beginning of the pike perch fishing season, he gives preference to dark-colored lures. Black and purple baits with interspersed silver dots performed better than others. But lures the color of “machine oil” practically do not attract local pike perch. Most likely, the reason for this could be the high transparency of the water.

It also often happens that pike perch on the river is perfectly caught with twisters, but completely ignores vibrating tails. The fact is that usually a twister works well in calm water, while vibrating tails are used in currents. But as it turned out, this rule does not apply on the Oka. There are many bites on the twister and very rare on the vibrotail.

Since fishing for pike perch in the Oka

It is often aimed at maximum ejection, so the size of the bait has to be limited (5 cm, no more), but larger hooks should be installed. And although such a bait does not look entirely natural, it works well. If the bait is equipped with a double that is too large for it, then the tips of the hooks need to be brought closer to the middle, in this case the angle between them should be slightly less than 900, in which case a better hook is obtained.

Zander biting on the Oka

Changes in the biting time for pike perch on the Oka vary quite often, but in the early morning, as is customary everywhere, pike perch here may practically not be taken. The bite doesn't start until 7 am or even at the beginning of eight. It usually lasts until 9-10 am, sometimes until 11 am. Also, a pattern is observed: if in one catchable place from 7 am to 9 am there were no bites, then in others with a similar bottom topography and the same depths the same thing happened.

If the weather turns bad in June, the pike perch continues to bite; it usually bites just before a thunderstorm and during a thunderstorm. As soon as the thunderstorm stops, the fish bite stops. But on the Oka it happens a little differently. The bite begins only after the end of the thunderstorm and lasts from 30 minutes to an hour. Usually there are no fishermen on the river at this time, and you can fish in any convenient place.

As for pike, weather changes probably affect it more than pike perch, since in similar weather the pike bite is rather sluggish. Although the spotted predator still comes across.

Experienced fishermen also noticed that after a thunderstorm, an unusual pike perch bites. It is somewhat larger than the pike perch that is caught in normal weather, and is darker in color. Apparently, the newcomer pike perch is biting, possibly entering the Oka from other rivers, for example from the Klyazma.

In a word, the features of catching pike perch on the Oka

are such that before you can achieve good catches on this river, you first need to adapt to them.

Wobbler fishing technique

If you catch pike perch in October using a wobbler, you can’t help but mention fishing with this bait. If you want your fishing to be as effective as possible, you should constantly change the nature of the retrieve and its speed when fishing. Sometimes the pike perch grabs the bait on a slow retrieve, but most often it likes a fast and energetic retrieve, which does not allow you to think much about your safety, while only the predator instinct works for the fish. The speed of the retrieve and its nature can be adjusted both with the help of a reel and with the help of the rod itself. The bait should be cast as close as possible to the places where this predator is supposed to ambush. Of course, with such wiring, the probability of losing the bait by catching it on a snag increases significantly, but the probability of a bite also increases many times.

As already mentioned, pike perch in October grabs the bait very aggressively, trying to swallow it completely, and when fishing it fights to the last, catching it at this time is exciting and unpredictable, so be sure to take a landing net or hook with you.
