The elongated body is covered with ctenoid (a type of scale, the posterior edge of which is equipped with a ridge of teeth or spines) scales on the ocular side and cycloid (smooth posterior edge of the scales) on the blind side. The long dorsal fin with 97-117 soft branched rays stretches from the head almost to the weakly notched caudal fin. Both jaws have two rows of arrow-shaped teeth.
