Autumn is a special time for any carp angler. A little more and the reservoirs will be covered with ice, so you need to have time to enjoy fishing and get the most out of it. Unlike summer, carp fishing in autumn often brings trophies, but it is complicated by several factors. The fact is that as the weather gets colder, carp become unpredictable. If you just come to the first body of water you come across and cast your fishing rods, your fishing success will be in question. At this time of year, it is necessary to prepare your gear more carefully, to know exactly in which places to look for fish and what bait to offer it.

Best time to catch carp

The best time to catch golden beauties is mid-autumn. Yes, it is in the fall that the fish, which gives its name to the whole family, exhibits active feeding.

It is easier to catch carp in autumn than at other times of the year. You don’t need to look for special places, but you just have to remember that in the fall the carp rolls into deep places (pits, dumps).

In autumn, carp prefers to stay in the depths, since here you can find a lot of food. Such food will be mollusks and bottom soil, from which the carp sucks out insect larvae like a vacuum cleaner.

The carp stays at a certain depth all day, when the sun begins to warm up, the golden beauties rise from the lower layers to the upper layers. During lunch hours, carp can be found in shallow water.

The main gear for carp fishing will be a feeder and a heavy carp rod with a large cast.

As a feeder receiver, I mainly use this particular tackle, but sometimes I just have to use heavy specialized carp rods.

This usually happens when I fish at extreme distances. But about this later, first we’ll look at catching carp on a feeder. Fishing with a feeder is simple, the main thing is to master several features:

First, make a long and accurate cast;

Second, properly control the equipment with the feeder;

Third, it is worth mixing the bait well so that it does not fall out of the feeder ahead of time.

Let's start with choosing a feeder rod for carp. The most important thing is that the feeder can make long casts and be extremely sensitive. I don’t think it’s worth mentioning specific models, but I will say that a stick 3.50 meters long and with a dough of 50 to 100 grams will be optimal for carp fishing.

Typically, high-quality feeder rods are equipped with three interchangeable whips of different hardness. For carp, you should set the tip harder, as a powerful hook is required to cut through the lip of this powerful fish.

If we use a medium-hard whip, the feeder will sag when hooking and this will not have a positive effect on the fish. The number of gatherings will increase, so it’s still worth choosing the first option.

A large reel is required, approximately 4000-5000 according to the Shiman classification. All that is required from a meat grinder is smooth running, smooth winding and a good front clutch with a large load on the brake. Use the feeders you like, I prefer method type feeders.

Bait for autumn carp. What does carp like?

Here everything is much simpler, the bait is molded onto a special spring. By the way, such bait should have a good consistency and sufficient stickiness. When it hits water, it should not break, but will slowly dissolve at the bottom, and not in the water column.

You can achieve the desired result, but only with experience; at first you will not succeed right away. The bait is mixed at the fishing site, and water from the reservoir is used as a solvent for the granules.

Do not be afraid of the bright provoking color of the bait; carp will not swim past red, yellow and green colors. It is necessary to add a nozzle to the bait, so it becomes even more attractive.

The granules dissolve in water, but the maggot or worm will become free from bait. If you do everything correctly, the carp will appear immediately.

But autumn baits should be treated correctly. From personal experience I will say that it is best to use boilies; carp react to them simply amazingly.

Often a bunch of worms placed on a hook with a lobe also helps out. And yet number No. 1 is boilies. Boilies come in different sizes from the smallest to the largest; depending on the illumination of the reservoir and the bottom condition, a specific color is selected.

When choosing gear for carp fishing in a particular body of water, you should first take into account the fishing conditions. For example, for a small elongated pond stocked with carp, long-range gear such as a donka or a feeder is poorly suited. Of course, you can throw them, but in a small area, the fall of a heavy feeder (sinker) onto the water creates too much noise and scares the fish. In this case, it is advisable to use a fishing rod equipped with a reel with the necessary supply of fishing line. On small lakes, such gear allows you to throw bait to the nearest promising hole or snag, under which carp can hide. It is important to equip your fishing rod with a strong fishing line and a reliable carp hook, since in the fall, biting a trophy specimen is not uncommon. The float should not be too bright, otherwise in clear autumn water the fish will be afraid of it. On rivers and reservoirs, where you cannot reach the required depth with a fishing rod, it is recommended to fish with any bottom gear, starting with a simple cast and ending with a well-equipped feeder. Moreover, the feeder in this category is considered the most effective, since the presence of a feeder significantly increases the chances of a successful fishing outcome. As a rule, it consists of:

heavy class rods up to 4 m long (the test is selected depending on the weight of the equipment used);
a capacious power spinning reel (3000-4000), which has a reliable friction brake and a special baitrunner system designed for catching large fish;
monofilament fishing line with a cross-section of 0.30 mm (you should not install a cord, it is very noticeable in the water).

Finding a promising place for carp fishing

The ideal place for a feeder in the autumn will be a flat bottom, with a uniform decline in depth. It is there, somewhere in the depths, that a trophy carp stands and may be waiting for your bait.

You need to cast the bait exactly in the same place, plus or minus half a meter, and carefully soften the fall of the equipment on the water by controlling the fishing line on the reels.

When the bait almost enters the water, we should move the tip back a little, thereby the equipment will be cushioned and the splash will be quiet and will not scare away the cautious fish.

For comfortable fishing, you will need a comfortable platform with soft foam feeder stands and a standard landing net for carp fishing. It is advisable if the tip of the feeder is inclined towards the water, then we have a better chance of making a high-quality hook.

Catching carp in the fall with a specialized rod is practically not excluded, except that such sticks are used to catch fish in stocked reservoirs with a large concentration of large fish. Sometimes this pleasure is not cheap, but it’s worth a try.

A carp rod is a powerful thin blank with large guides and excellent sensors. Casting with such a rod is as far and accurate as possible.

If when fishing with a feeder you can use braided fishing lines of large diameter, then here only monofilament, because we are talking about more significant trophies.

Choosing a place and time of fishing

With the arrival of autumn, carp do not change their traditional deep-sea places, especially if these places have reliable shelter. He will be able to leave such an interesting place only if the temperature conditions change, and in winter there is only oxygen starvation.

Deep-sea places do not feed fish, so they have to leave them in search of food, and this is, first of all, shallow water, but the cold snap is doing its job.

At the beginning of a cold snap , when the water has not yet completely cooled down, there is still something to eat in the shallow waters and carp come out to feed on them, especially in the morning and evening.
When the water has already cooled down , and this is the middle of autumn, then the carp have nothing to do in such areas.

But not everything is so simple. During the autumn period, intervals are possible when days are marked by increased exposure to sunlight, which leads to abnormal warming and, as a consequence, to rapid warming of shallow waters. This, in turn, certainly attracts fish, including carp. At this time, it is better to catch carp during the day, when the water warms up to its maximum temperature. At night it will certainly cool down and in the morning fishermen have nothing to do near the reservoir.

With the onset of cold weather, aquatic vegetation sinks to the bottom, so that carp are no longer attracted to promising summer spots. Dead leaves and stems of underwater plants cease to attract living organisms, and if there is something to profit from at the bottom, it is covered with an irresistible carpet of dead plants that have settled to the bottom.

An excellent promising place may be areas where colonies of mollusks live, located at depths of more than 2 meters. Therefore, in the autumn such places can be catchy.

Carp don't mind rummaging around in the muddy bottom to find something edible. Such places may border on a hard bottom. Therefore, knowing these boundaries, the tackle should be cast onto a hard bottom, but closer to the silt.

Based on this, we can draw a conclusion that the nature of fishing in autumn is different than in summer. In the fall, you can’t count on a productive catch in the morning, but fishing during the day can bring a lot of fun. We can safely say that the main bite occurs from 10 in the morning until the evening, when the sun’s rays stop warming up the water.

Tactics for catching carp in autumn

In the fall, it is important to lure carp correctly, not to overdo it with the attractant, and not to add extra granules.

When fishing with a tube, you can throw a lot of boilies at the bait point. With this position you will keep the fish in the bite zone for a long time.

Remember that the main thing is accurate and long casting! The distance can be formed using the revolutions of the coil; it is advisable to know how many meters the coil winds in one revolution.

Then an elastic band is attached to the spool or secured in a clip, depending on what is convenient for you. In this simple way, we do not deviate from the fishing zone.

Carp does not like cloudy days and especially when it rains, but they simply love sunny weather with a light breeze. The best wind for carp is south and east, and average atmospheric pressure.

When there is a change in wind and weather, the carp categorically refuses to be caught, no matter what tricks you try. Mild weather is not typical for autumn, but it is better to choose sunny days for fishing.

When you go fishing for carp, take several sets of gear with you at once. Sometimes you have to wait for a bite for hours, and an extra rod only increases the chances of success.

This type of fishing is difficult because you have to look at the top of the feeder for a very long time and it gets tiring, but when a good carp sits on the hook, the fatigue goes away instantly.

Don't forget about bait, you will need a lot of it. You will also have to combine it with attractants and baits to achieve results.

Catching carp in the fall is very difficult, but when you begin to understand the intricacies of catching this fish, it will not cost you anything to catch a solid trophy, especially if you fish in the fall.

Fishing places

If the weather remains unchanged for several days, the atmospheric pressure is stable, then the carp will feed. You should prepare thoroughly for autumn carp fishing, since most likely after it fishing will have to be postponed until the next season.

When choosing a place to catch carp in the fall, if it takes place on a familiar body of water, it would be wise to try your luck in those places where carp were caught well in the summer. He often goes to the same places to feed.
If you are fishing in an unfamiliar body of water, then look for deep places where the fish go with the onset of inclement weather and fish there. It comes out to feed only when the temperature rises and the water warms up at least a little. In shallow areas, carp can be found closer to noon, and only in good, clear weather.
If there are no bites in the places where you successfully caught carp in the summer, you need to start looking for new promising places. Considering that the autumn day is short, you should hurry up with this. In addition to traditional carp pits, you should try to find a “table” that has a smooth descent to depth. In such places, carp can feed almost around the clock.
You should not neglect areas with warm industrial wastewater (of course, this means clean water from coolers, and not toxic wastewater). In places with higher water temperatures, carp always behave actively.

Carp can be found in areas with a depth of 2 meters, where there are accumulations of shellfish. He often looks for food in silty areas - here it is important to determine the boundaries and present the bait so that it is on a hard part of the bottom. Or you can adjust the depth so that the hook with the bait is located as close as possible above the silt layer.
