Where to go fishing in Barnaul in the best fishing spots

Fishing is a popular hobby in any area where there is at least some body of water. What can we say about the Altai Territory, where there are so many lakes and rivers, the main of which is the Ob. Several dozen species of fish are found in its numerous channels, as well as in other rivers and lakes.

The administrative center of the region is Barnaul. Among residents of the city and surrounding villages, fishing is the most common way to spend free time. However, fishermen from different parts of the country, including Moscow and St. Petersburg, come here for a rich catch and unforgettable impressions. In order for fishing in Barnaul and its environs to be enjoyable, you need to know not only the fishing spots, but also how the fish behave depending on the weather, time of day, season and fishing conditions.

Region overview

There are more than seventeen thousand rivers in the region, most of them are at least ten kilometers long. The sphere of fishing interests includes not only the Ob, formed by the confluence of the Biya and the Katun, but also its numerous tributaries.

Popular places for Barnaul fishing are also numerous lakes, the number of which reaches almost eleven thousand. The largest of them are located in the steppe zone - Bolshoye Topolinoye, Kuchukskoye, Bolshoye Yarovoe and Gorkoye. Most lakes, including mountain lakes, have an area of more than one square kilometer.

Fishing on the Pravdinsky and Gilevsky reservoirs can also be catchy.

Those wishing to go fishing in the vicinity of Barnaul should not forget that most fish species are listed in the Red Book of the Russian Federation. Their fishing is prohibited or limited, which means that the fisherman needs to know and follow the rules established for catching them.

Fishing in the Altai Republic

This is a rare region of Russia where there are no railways. It is best to get to it by your own car or by bus from Barnaul and Biysk. Lots of fishing spots, beautiful nature and low population density.

Lake Teletskoye

A unique lake with a depth of 330 meters, one of the 25 deepest in the world. You need to get to it from Biysk through the regional center Turochak. It is best to stay on the northern shore at the tourist centers of Artybash and Yogach. The most convenient way to get to the fishing spot is on rented boats and motorboats, however, sometimes people fish on the shore.

Various rivers flow into Lake Teletskoye, their mouths are also suitable for fishing, for example, Yeshtora, Chili, Samysh.

The lake is home to 18 species of fish. Among them, for example, are the following:

  • Grayling, up to 800 grams in weight.
  • Teletsky whitefish, from 300 grams to 1 kilo in weight. Endemic, not found in other lakes.
  • The large fish is the Uskuch, its weight can reach 5 kilos.
  • Pike, its weight can reach 10 kilos.
  • Burbot, up to 5 kilos in weight.
  • Taimen. The largest fish in Lake Teletskoye weighs 40-60 kilos. Its length reaches two meters.

When planning a fishing trip to Lake Teletskoye, you should take into account that the weather there is changeable, you need to be prepared for wind, rain, and cold temperatures.

You also need to know that only the left bank of the lake is used for fishing, and its right part is a nature reserve where fishing is prohibited. But on the right bank you can visit the beautiful Korbu waterfall.

Fishing on Lake Teletskoye is prohibited during the spawning period, but the period may differ for different fish, so you may be able to catch someone. You can fish all year round. In winter, fishing occurs from the ice. This prevents a good catch of pike, perch and other fish species.

For fishing they use spinning rods, fishing rods and ordinary fishing rods.

The large and rare taimen fish should be caught in June and September in the tributaries of Lake Teletskoye. It is listed in the Red Book of Altai, so after catching it must be released. The same rule applies to whitefish Pravdin, but it is not necessary to release grayling; its local residents know how to cook deliciously.

Shavlinskie lakes

The height of these lakes above sea level is about 2200 meters. The width of the largest of them is 500 meters, and the length is 1.5 kilometers. The climb from the lower lake to the upper one takes a whole day. The best place to fish is on the Shavla River. Grayling is the best fish to catch. Fishing gear can be obtained during a walk or horseback riding trip for an organized group, which takes 7 days.

Fish catch

Ulaganskie lakes

They are located in the eastern part of the region at an altitude of about 2000 meters above sea level. There are several large lakes:

  • Surulukol.
  • Baluktukol.
  • Tuldukel.
  • Uzunkol.
  • Marfino.
  • Dead.

The best way to get to these lakes is by SUV along the road through the Seminsky Pass, heading towards Ongudai. Along the way, it is worth seeing the confluence of the Chuya and the Katun.

Fish is found in abundance there, sometimes artificially bred, for example, trout and peled. You can fish on your own or book a fishing tour that is offered to vacationers. It’s a good idea to combine such a tour with a ride on an ATV, a ride on a catamaran or a boat.

You can stay near the lakes in hotels, camp sites, estates, guest houses, eco-tour complexes and the Uzun-Kel camping site.

The area around the lakes is interesting for its microclimate; heat-loving plants grow there, for example, pears, cherries and other garden crops.

Karatash Lakes

The lakes are located in the northeast of the republic, on the Sumultinsky ridge. In the upper reaches of the Uy-Karatash River there are 15 lakes of varying sizes. Several of them contain trout, lake and rainbow, which began to be artificially bred during Soviet times.

When traveling to these lakes, you should take into account that snow can lie in that area until the end of June, because the altitude is almost 2000 meters. The largest of the lakes is 600 meters long. Tourists reach them on foot or on horseback. Trout are found in two lakes.

Chulyshman River

Its channels and delta are rich in various fish. You can catch Telets dace, Altai osman, Siberian char and grayling. The best way to get to Chulyshman is by car along a dirt road. Among the attractions near the fishing spots are waterfalls, a healing spring and stone mushrooms. The river valley is a picturesque canton about 130 kilometers long.

You can catch grayling all day, but the best time is evening. It is good to catch it in the fall, when the fish are hungry and swim in the upper layer of water. It is convenient to catch this fish using a “boat” device.

Chuya River

The river flows through the southern part of the republic, along which the Chuisky tract runs. There are several settlements on the banks where you can stop for fishing, for example, Kosh-Agach. Fishing there begins at the end of August and is especially good in September and October. In the Kosh-Agach region, grayling and osman are well caught; the latter, even in winter, gives a good catch on Kameniste Lake near the regional center.

Inhabitants of reservoirs

In flat reservoirs you can catch pike, perch, ide, pike perch, chebak, dace, tench and crucian carp.

In rivers and large lakes with running water you can find ruffe, gudgeon, lake and river minnow. Rarely caught are spiny sculpin, sculpin goby and lamprey. Usually only some floaters are interested in them.

The most valuable fish species are

  • sturgeon;
  • nelma;
  • sterlet.

In rivers with cool water you can fish for taimen and grayling, which are distinguished by excellent taste, in lakes - for whitefish, in reservoirs of the highlands - for ottomans.

In fresh steppe lakes, carp, bream and carp bite well. Usually they go to paid fish farms to catch them, where you can count on excellent results.

You can’t count on catching trophy fish in free reservoirs. Local residents catch it with nets, so such prey is practically never caught during sport fishing. Despite the fact that local authorities are fighting such fishing methods, netters continue to cause damage to the region’s fish resources.

Lake Eraska

The path to the lake lies along the Zmeinogorsky tract. It is located between the villages of Buranovo and Kalistratikha. The crucian carp bites well here.

When fishing it is prohibited:

  • Fish near bridges and hydraulic structures (at a distance of closer than 500 meters).
  • Use poaching devices.
  • Catch more than the catch limit per person (5 kg). Each type has its own standards for weight and size.
  • Catch Siberian sturgeon, taimen and nelma. Sturgeon is listed in the Red Book of Russia, nelma and taimen are listed in the Red Book of the Altai Territory.

What gear to fish with

The choice of gear depends on the object being fished. When it comes to predatory fish, the main gear is a spinning rod. The main predator of lowland reservoirs and Altai foothills is pike. In the Ob and its tributaries you can catch specimens weighing ten kilograms or more. They are great for jerkbaits and large silicone baits up to thirty centimeters in size. To catch them you will need a powerful spinning rod with a reliable reel and a strong cord. The pike hides at the bottom, so the wiring of silicone baits and wobblers is carried out in the bottom layers.

Another common inhabitant of Altai reservoirs, which is used to catch with a spinning rod, is pike perch. This predator bites on jig baits and wobblers. Using vibrating tails, it was possible to catch specimens fifteen to twenty centimeters long.

All reservoirs, except high-mountain ones, are inhabited by perch, the most numerous species of predatory fish. Small and medium-sized specimens can be caught from the shore using float tackle, using an ordinary worm for bait. To catch large specimens, you will need a boat, since humpback whales swim far from the coast. To catch them you will need a spinning rod and a set of twisters of different colors and sizes.

Among the peaceful fish of the region, the Siberian roach or chebak is especially common. They catch roach using a feeder or float tackle. Very often, while fishing for chebak, a dace bites along the way - a small fish that is used as live bait.

Carp and carp have recently ceased to be rare in the region. There are a lot of them in ponds and lakes along the upper reaches of the Ob, both in paid farms and in publicly accessible free reservoirs. They are caught using bottom gear and special carp rods. The weight of trophy specimens reaches twenty kilograms.

A local feature, so to speak, “exotic” fishing in Barnaul is taimen . It is caught in cool, fast-flowing rivers using powerful spinning rods. The captured trophy specimens reached a mass of fifty kilograms. It is clear that spinning tackle for such prey should be especially strong and reliable. Even if the fisherman fails to catch taimen, he will not leave fishing without pike or lenok.

Another local “gift” for the fisherman is grayling. This fish has an amazing taste, therefore it is a desirable object of fishing, for the sake of which fishermen are ready to endure the inconvenience of jumping from stone to stone on mountain rivers. Surprisingly, grayling can be caught using a float, a lure, or a fly rod. This predator is greedy and gluttonous, it is not deterred by rough gear - large hooks and fishing lines of large diameter.

Climate Features

In order for fishing to be successful, you should take into account the climatic features of the region and know how fish behave in different weather conditions.

Barnaul has a contrasting climate with cold frosty winters - the average January temperature is seventeen and a half degrees below zero - and hot summers. The average summer temperature is about twenty degrees Celsius.

Air humidity in the cold season is 73–76%, in the warm season it exceeds 60%. Air masses move mostly to the south, southwest and west. In autumn it is often cloudy, the rest of the time sunny days predominate.

Fishing in Altai in winter

Hunting and fishing in Altai does not stop in winter. Active fishing in the reservoirs of the region begins in late summer, early autumn and continues to fish until April-May.

In summer, fish in reservoirs have low activity; they feel hot in water warmed up under the sun. As the temperature drops, activity increases; it is at the beginning of September that many people book houses at paid fishing bases.

At the end of April, many representatives of the ichthyofauna of the region enter the spawning period; it is impossible to catch fish during this period. After spawning, the fish are “sick” for a long time; they regain their normal state of health closer to autumn.

Fishing in Altai is interesting; in addition to catching fish, everyone can admire the beauty of untouched nature and breathe in clean air. It is not at all necessary to book a house at the base; you can have a great time in a tent; evening gatherings around the fire with friends will remain in your memory forever. And fish soup made from freshly caught fish cannot compare with even the most exquisite dishes in an expensive restaurant.

  1. Sorochiy Log. The reservoir is located in the Pervomaisky district, forty-five kilometers from the regional center. Here, vacationers pay for services - tables, garbage removal, toilets. The reservoir is home to crucian carp, carp, grass carp, silver carp, pike perch, burbot, pike and even crayfish, which confirms the purity of the water.
  2. Aviator Pond. Here they pay specifically for fishing, and the amount consists of two parts: fixed - for entry and variable - for the fish caught. Of course, it is lower than the price for the same fish in stores. The reservoir is stocked with mirror carp, grass carp and American catfish. The weight of trophies is from one to six kilograms.
  3. Lake Oasis. Here in winter and summer you can catch pike, pike perch, perch, roach and bream. Clean shores and well-groomed beaches attract a large number of vacationers to this place.

Fishing on a paid reservoir does not guarantee a good catch. It, like any other type of fishing, requires careful preparation. It is necessary to choose the right bait, groundbait, and use the right gear - only then can you count on success.

Fishing within the capital of Altai

Barnaul is the capital of the Altai Territory. The location of the city is ideal for fishing lovers; the Ob River flows right through it. Many people like to fish here, so there are plenty of places.

There are both paid and free places for fishing. Guests of the city are advised to first find out what and how to do it or take some money with them.

  • on the pond at the Coral base;
  • in Beshentsevo;
  • in Sorochy Log;
  • at the Aviator base.

There will definitely be some catching here, and most of the fish on the hook will be trophy specimens.

Perhaps fishing in the city’s free water bodies will be less successful. You can safely go fishing and not worry about your budget:

  • to the city beach, just below the New Bridge;
  • in Zoton region;
  • on the Pravdinsky reservoir;
  • to Baldin Island;
  • on Swan Lake.

Choosing a suitable place for fishing is not difficult; there are many of them within the city, both paid and free.

Rules and prohibitions for fishing in Barnaul

As mentioned above, many aquatic inhabitants of the region are listed in the Red Book. Therefore, fishing here has a number of restrictions and prohibitions that the fisherman needs to know.

This, of course, is primarily a spawning ban. In addition, it is prohibited:

  • the use of piercing and cutting weapons, explosives, electric current and firearms;
  • construction of fishing barriers on reservoirs;
  • catching more fish than allowed by law;
  • fishing with nets without the appropriate license.

On some reservoirs you can fish only with one fishing rod and one hook, but, as a rule, this is warned in advance.

What kind of fish is found in Altai reservoirs

The Altai Mountains differs from other regions not only in its fascinating nature, but also in the variety of fish species that live in the local rivers and lakes. And the fish here surprise with their size. Some visiting fishermen, who, out of ignorance, did not properly prepare their gear, look with surprise at the torn end of the fishing line after the first bite. Yes, there really are “monsters” here and they bite quite often. Fishing in Altai amazes with the species diversity of fish. So, what trophy can you get in this region:

  • Taimen is the largest underwater inhabitant in these places, representing the salmon family. Most often, individuals weighing up to 5 kg are caught on the hook, but there have been cases of catching 1.5-meter giants whose weight exceeded 50 kg. On the Internet you can see many photos of such trophy specimens. Taimen are found in almost all major rivers of the Altai Territory, as well as in Lake Teletskoye. They live at the bottom of deep holes, and come out to the shallows only in the late evening and at night to feed themselves. In shallow river areas and near populated areas, it is impossible to catch this fish for the reason that it simply isn’t there. Taimen is very careful and never takes unnecessary risks; to catch it, proper camouflage and silence will be required. Usually this predator is caught on a spinning rod, using oscillating spoons, wobblers, and artificial mice as bait. Small taimen are often caught on a fly when fishing for grayling.
  • Peled is a lake commercial fish that is grown artificially in some reservoirs of the Ulagan region. The second name is cheese. It grows up to 40-45 cm and gains weight up to a kilogram. Peled is both a commercial object and an object of recreational fishing. You can catch it with bloodworms, maggots, worms, shellfish meat, and in winter it takes well with a jig with or without bait.
  • Trout is the dream of most anglers. This is a worthy opponent, offering strong resistance when fought. Those who catch trout for the first time are sincerely surprised where a 30-centimeter fish gets such strength. In the Altai Republic there are two varieties of trout – lake trout and rainbow trout (trout and mykiss). You can enjoy catching them on the Uykaratash lakes, trout lakes in the village of Urozhainoye (Soviet district), on Lake Darashkol, as well as in the upper reaches of the Pyzha River.
  • Grayling is a nimble fish with a beautiful dorsal fin reminiscent of a peacock's tail. It lives almost everywhere, even in shallow streams. Usually these are individuals weighing up to 300 g, but in the same Lake Teletskoye there are also 2-kilogram trophies. Grayling is caught using earthworms, artificial and natural flies, various insects, and narrow rotating spoons.
  • Lenok (uskuch) - looks like taimen, but is significantly superior to it in taste. This is a fairly large representative of the Altai ichthyofauna, gaining weight up to 6 kilograms. Unfortunately, it is caught extremely rarely due to its scarcity. Lenok is listed in the Red Book of Altai, so after being caught and photographed for a fishing album, it is advisable to release it.
  • Whitefish - in the reservoirs of the Altai Territory is represented by two varieties: common whitefish and Siberian vendace. The deep Lake Teletskoye, which has a lot of it, is especially famous for whitefish fishing. You can fish with a float rod, placing a worm, jig, or fry on the hook, or with a spinning rod on a small spoon.
  • Taurus dace is a fish weighing 200-250 g, mistakenly called chebak by local residents. This is the only representative of cyprinids in Lake Teletskoye. The highest concentration is observed at the source of the Biya River and on the Kyga Bay; dace winter in the Chulyshman River. The best tackle for catching them is considered to be a float rod, and the most catchy bait is a red worm.
  • Burbot is a bottom-dwelling fish that lives in the deep holes of many Altai rivers. The catches are dominated by specimens up to 2 kg, sometimes trophy burbot weighing 5-6 kg are caught. You can catch them using donks of various designs or spinning rods. The best time for fishing is late autumn, winter and the first half of spring. During the warm period, when the water temperature is above 10 degrees, catching this fish is very problematic.
  • Pike, perch, roach, bream are found in all medium and large reservoirs of Altai. All known fishing methods and equipment are suitable for successful fishing.
