Transforming Shibuya: what will this Tokyo area look like in 2021?

6. Harajuku

Harajuku is a favorite area for teenage girls with a wide selection of specialty clothing stores. But for us, the shopping street was a more fun place to take photos and see all the weird clothing styles than to shop for it ourselves.

Every Sunday, young people dress up in a variety of clothing styles, including lolita, visual kei and cosplay, and go out to spend the day around Harajuku.

Harajuku is a famous fashion destination
Pancakes are very popular in Tokyo and are filled with all sorts of wonder!

Most young people gather at the Jingu Pedestrian Bridge, which connects Harajuku with the neighboring area.

The quarter consists of two streets, Omotesando and Takeshita.
The picture below shows the entrance to a shopping mall in Harajuku - a rather confusing but very easy to use wall of mirrors curved in all directions.

Japanese fashion center for youth
While searching for Lolita-dressed girls in Yoyogi Park, we came across Meiji Jingu, a beautiful temple in a small forested area.

While we didn't find many of the Lolita-clad youths in Harajuku, we did come across another fun sight. A costume parade featuring all the Disney fairy tales!
