As for paper money, the smallest bill is 1000 yen, the largest is 10,000 (the Japanese call it “1 mana”, respectively, 2 bills of this denomination will sound like “2 mana”, i.e. equal to 20,000, and This applies not only to banknotes, but to accounts in general).

There are also 2000 and 5000 banknotes. The 2000 yen banknote is very unusual and quite rare (during my 10 years in Japan, I only saw it once, because the number of banknotes issued is too small). All money is printed only by the Imperial Mint.

Shape and composition of coins

All of them are regular round in shape, and some coins with a hole are 5 and 50 yen. Materials from which the trifle is made:

  • 1 – aluminum
  • 5 – brass

Story

As is known from the history of the creation of the yen, Chinese money was taken as a model. This happened because the states carried on trade relations for many centuries. The name of the Japanese banknote is even similar to the Chinese word “yuan”. Japanese banknotes were first introduced in 1877. During their existence, they were repeatedly depreciated; the government carried out monetary reforms in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The last time new banknotes were issued was in 2004. then the so-called F series came out to replace the D and E series. For them, experts used the latest technologies with an improved degree of protection.

Commemorative coins

One of the latest and most beautiful series was released in 2008, called “47 Prefectures of Japan”. Administratively, Japan is divided into prefectures and consists of 47 such areas.

To popularize and develop these regions, as well as for the unity of the nation, since 2008, the Central Bank of Japan began issuing commemorative colored silver coins, the design of which is dedicated to each of the prefectures.

The obverse of the commemorative coins is the same, and the reverses have an original design.

Security against counterfeiting

The yen is one of the world's reserve currencies, so its security is very high.

The banknotes have watermarks in the form of an oval and stripes visible in the light. Also, when printing, ultra-fine lines are used (thinner than a human hair), which, when trying to copy, usually “blur out” and “fog.”

Additionally, there are hidden images: the word “NIPPON” (translated from Japanese - Japan) and the corresponding banknote denomination printed in special ink.

Some banknotes have holographic designs (5,000 and 10,000 yen) that change color and image from different angles. Microprinting, fluorescent ink, tactile markings, raised printing and color-changing inks are also used.

Counterfeiters in Japan face life imprisonment. Mild forms of violations (for example, the use of deliberately counterfeit coins) entail a prison sentence of at least 3 years.
