How to catch perch with a jig in the fall?

Perch fishing is a great pastime and hobby for many spinning anglers. And floaters often hunt for this fish. And it was no coincidence that I decided to catch perch in October. The fact is that this is an excellent period for catching stripers. When else, if not in October, can you fish so well and catch bass using a ram, a cat, or simply in sport fishing mode, releasing the caught fish back to its native element. At this point I won’t tell you what to do with the fish you catch. But I can tell you how best to catch perch in the fall, and specifically in the month of October, and I will do it with pleasure. Let's go in order.

When and where is the best time to catch perch in October?

In October, perch actively hunts and even attacks large fishing baits. With the passing of the hot summer, he became much more comfortable, because perch does not really like heat due to the lack of oxygen in intense heat. During September, the perch has already become accustomed to the autumn weather and October is the ideal time to catch it.

In summer, perch often took refuge in the water column or near the bottom, hiding from the scorching summer sun, and deeper water temperatures are always more comfortable. But with the arrival of September, when the temperature drops sharply, the perch becomes active again on the surface of the water and shallow waters, attacking fry and fishing baits.

In October, surface fishing for perch stops again and you need to move to the bottom layers. The fry that the perch fed on in shallow water has grown and moves to deeper parts of the reservoir, beginning to prepare for winter, and the perch also follows it. Now the perch will be mostly in the depths. But there are still exceptions to the rules. On clear, sunny October days, perch return to shallow water and can actively feed near the surface

water. These are very favorable days for striper fishing and you can get a very good catch. If the weather turns bad and typical October weather sets in - gloomy, damp, gloomy, then the perch again sinks into the lower layers of the water.

Of course, October is not often blessed with good clear weather, so perch is almost always caught at this time using deep-sea baits and mainly fished in the lower layers of water.

The most active perch fishing time is from 8 a.m. to approximately 4 p.m. If the weather is not at all favorable, then the perch bite may be lousy in the morning, but at lunchtime it usually becomes more active anyway. In October it starts to get dark early, so after 16:00 fishing is no longer very comfortable - you can’t see the casting point, the fall of the bait and the direction in which the line goes after the bite. When fishing in a difficult area of a reservoir with snags and other obstacles, fishing at dusk is almost impossible without breaks and snags, which, of course, will bring little pleasure.

What to do with the October perch

The sweetest thing is to salt any October perch. Why salt? Because in October the perch is the fattest. Since throughout September and October small fish move in schools from the shallows to the depths, the striped robber attacks them in schools and eats them off before winter.

Therefore, the thickest fat layer in perch, especially in slow-growing males, is in October.

How to salt perch? Very simple. Do not gut, remove gills, or peel skin.

  1. Pour into a pan and sprinkle each layer of fish with salt, always coarse. You can’t use small ones - it will create a crust and will not salt the fish. Perch carcasses must be laid tightly and always on their sides, fish to fish.
  2. After three or four days, check how the okushok has been salted. Then let it sit in the refrigerator for another 2-3 days. All terms depend on the size of the carcasses! The period of time that is enough for a “soup maker” is not at all suitable for salting perch – a “frying pan”.
  3. After the carcasses are salted, you can hang them on the balcony to dry. In warm regions, be sure to cover the carcasses with gauze from the annoying October fly. In those regions where it is already snowing, of course, there is no need to cover it with anything. The “white flies” that circle outside the window do not harm the salting of the perch.

Drying time depends on your preferences. Those who like dried fish remove the perch from the rope early, those who like dry fish keep the carcasses on the rope longer. Only fish should not be dried in direct sunlight.

Lures for perch in October

In October, perch, as mentioned above, settles at depth and is extremely rarely active in shallow water or near the surface of the water. Therefore, some baits that could be used in summer are no longer suitable for catching it. Now baits for bottom fishing are used, and these are:

  • jig;

  • weighted rotators;
  • oscillators.

When fishing for perch in October, wobblers cannot achieve much results, although they can be used with great depth of immersion. But it’s still better to use baits that can be used to make a stepped retrieve; this is the type of retrieve for perch in October that will be the most effective.

The best results are shown by twisters and vibrating tails of dark colors and shades. Choose colors like dark lilac, green-brown, machine oil and the like. In October, perch reacts weakly to bright colors or ignores them altogether. If the water is cloudy and visibility underwater is limited, brighter colors may be used, but not too much and in no case are poisonous colors. Slightly lightened baits so that the perch can at least notice them in the water.

Select the size of the silicone bait for perch that is not too large, within 2.5-5 cm. In October, there is an increased probability of catching a trophy perch, although not in all reservoirs the perch grows to a respectable size, but if you fish on a river, where the perch is from half a kilogram and is no longer a rarity, then you have every chance to catch your trophy right now.

Also, spinners have always been a good bait for perch, which attract this striped predator with their vibration and rotation. But since in October you have to fish from the bottom and often at a depth of about 5 meters, the turntables need to be additionally loaded so that stepwise retrieving can be done.

Always check how the turntable works. The petal must begin to rotate from the first turn, otherwise the fishing efficiency drops significantly. If you are not sure that the spinner will start on the first turn, after the bait touches the bottom, twitch it slightly and only then begin to rotate the reel. With this twitch you activate the rotation of the petal and most likely it will not stick.

The load of the twister or spinner should correspond to the fishing depth and current speed. If you fish in great depths or in strong currents, or both of these factors are present, then the load can reach up to 20 grams. If you fish in calm or almost calm water, at shallow depths, then a jig head or a spinner weight of 5-6 grams will be quite enough.

Summer

How to catch perch using a spinning rod in July

The summer period is the most diverse in terms of the equipment used, fishing methods and animation techniques. The perch are scattered throughout the water area. It can be found in shallow and deep water, in the coastal zone and on the riverbed, in oxbow lakes and backwaters. Depending on various factors, a predator can feed near the surface, be in the water column, or stand at the bottom.

The most interesting and productive methods of jigging in the summer are:

  • retractable leash - when fishing at long distances on rifts and slopes with depths from a meter to five,
  • mounting on a jig head – when fishing in the upper and middle layers of water,
  • drop shot, jig rig, hinged mounting on a Cheburashka - when fishing on the riverbed, holes, dumps, in strong places,
  • Carolina, Texas – fishing in snags,
  • split shot, without weight on an offset hook - when hunting among aquatic vegetation.

In summer, perch behaves actively, often revealing its presence with characteristic “cauldrons” that it creates on the surface. At the same time, the fish readily respond to various jig baits - front-loaded rotating spoons, jigs, rubber, tail spinners and others.

Perch fishing techniques in October

The most popular tactic for catching perch in October among anglers is fishing with a spinning rod using a stepped retrieve. The technique is quite simple, but the number of bites will depend on how successfully you find exactly the right speed, the angle of elevation of the bait and the number of revolutions of the reel before stopping. Little things like this can have a significant impact on the result.

To cast the bait in a stepwise manner, you need to cast and wait until it touches the bottom. After touching the bottom, make several turns of the reel, as a result of which the bait soars to a small height above the bottom and swims a short distance, after which the reeling stops and the bait falls to the bottom again.

In this way we create an imitation of a fish swarming at the bottom. The rod must be held almost parallel to the surface of the water. Make sure that the line is always taut, otherwise you may not notice the fish biting.

Play with your retrieve speed, rod angle, and reel rotation speed. The main task is to find exactly the game that will best attract the attention of the perch and provoke it to attack. Be sure to take pauses and change their length. Usually the perch attacks the bait just during pauses.

Another, also quite popular, style of wiring is uniform. That is, after casting the bait, you need to let it fall to the bottom or get closer to it, and then monotonously begin to reel in the line. You can make small jerks with the tip of the rod, trying to provoke the perch to attack. Change fishing horizons and fishing speeds to find the best option.

Autumn

Autumn is the most favorable period for most spinners. Fans of perch fishing are no exception. During this period, trophy specimens are often caught on the hook and show increased activity, eating off before winter.

Fishing for perch with jigs in the fall is carried out in many reservoirs, but large rivers and reservoirs are most preferable. Here the concentration of striped robber is much higher than in small water areas. At the same time, a good food supply allows the predator to reach impressive sizes.

Hinged rigs work well in the fall

In the fall, perch is caught with classic rigs, various spaced rigs from a boat and the shore. Among the baits, preference is given to twisters, vibrotails, various creatures and worms. Jig spinners work well, and when it gets cold, foam fish work well.

In October

The second month of autumn is the most productive for perch. During this period, the predator gathers in numerous schools and moves away from the coastal zone closer to the riverbed areas. The fish often occupies depths of 3 to 6 meters, does not stand on the main stream, and prefers uneven bottom topography with local anomalies.

Advice! In October, perch is active, so it prefers quick provocative movements.

You should look for perch in October in the following places:

  • edges, slopes, slopes,
  • non-channel longitudinal ditches and gutters,
  • snags,
  • bridge supports,
  • wide reaches with uneven bottom relief.

Of the jig fishing methods, the most effective are articulated equipment, texas, retractable leash, and drop shot. The basis of the angler’s arsenal this month is made up of silicone baits; sometimes front-loaded spinners and narrow-bodied heavy oscillating spoons work well.

In November

At the end of autumn, perch migrates to the deepest parts of reservoirs, closer to wintering holes. Now the striped robber is not as active as in September-October, and it becomes more difficult to persuade him to bite. Cooled water leaves an imprint on the behavior of the predator.

Important! Often, when fishing for pike perch, the bait can be attacked by a weighty striped robber.

The best lures for catching perch in November are passive “rubber” and “foam rubber”. Experienced fishermen use polyurethane foam fish, as well as heavy jigs. The optimal animation techniques are step-by-step wiring and dragging along the bottom.

Types of equipment

When jig fishing for perch, depending on the activity of the fish and fishing conditions, several types of equipment can be used. Each of them involves the use of a standard set - a swivel, a fastener, a hook and the bait itself.

Classic equipment

This equipment option is the simplest. It uses a jig head with a hook, which is passed through the bait, and the sting is brought out in the center from the back.

Using a fastener, the jig head is attached to the main line, although some do without a fastener, simply tying directly. This design is used for fishing in areas with a hard bottom, without any obstacles.

Hinged mounting on Cheburashka

For this type of equipment you need Cheburashka sinkers. A double, triple or offset hook is attached to the sinker, onto which the bait is attached.

A double and a tee are used for more reliable hooking, an offset hook is used in cases where they are fishing in areas heavily overgrown with vegetation, in order to reduce the number of hooks to a minimum.

This type of installation makes the bait more mobile and adds animation, which, of course, only attracts the perch.

Retractable leash

This widely known option, also called the “Moscow rig,” is as follows: a sinker is tied to the end of the main line, and at a distance of 30-50 cm above it, a leash with bait is tied to the main line.

This installation method is used in cases where long-distance casting is required, which is achieved through the use of a heavy sinker. It shows fairly good results when fishing during periods of low perch activity.

Drop shot

This method has been used relatively recently. Practically, this is the same retractable leash, with the only difference being that the bait is attached to the main line directly, without the use of a leash.

The peculiarity of this installation is that the sinker remains at the bottom, and the action of the bait is ensured by vertical swings of the rod. After some time, the equipment is pulled closer to you, after which the game is repeated again. As you can see, its obvious advantage is the natural game, as well as the ability to fish in fast currents.

Texas rig

With this equipment option, the hook with bait is tied to the end of the fishing line, and a special clamp is mounted in front of it. On the main line, above the clamp, there is a sliding sinker.

This type of equipment is used for fishing in difficult, snag areas where there is a high risk of snagging with conventional equipment.

Carolina rig

This option practically copies the previous one, the only difference is that the bait is not tied directly to the main line.

A swivel is attached to the main line, and a leash made of fluorocarbon line with bait is attached to it. Used for fishing in clean areas of the reservoir.

Split shot

This option is a bait tied to the end of the main line, and above it there is a stationary sinker, usually round in shape.

The obvious advantages of such equipment include the simplicity of its design and the ability to catch perch well in the water column. It also works well when wiring by drawing, because... This type of installation allows you to play the bait in one place.
