Grayling fishing on small rivers

Tackle for grayling fishing

Gear for fishing grayling is selected and prepared for fishing conditions. Popular and catchy gear for grayling:

1. Float rod. For fishing in narrow rivers, a fly rod or Bolognese fishing rod is used. The length of the rod should ensure casting under the opposite bank. Usually 4-6 m is enough. A match fishing rod is perfect for making long casts. The grayling bite is noticeable through the rod, and the float does not need to be attached. Although fishing is more comfortable with a float. The length of the fishing line, 0.18-0.20 mm thick, should ensure that the bait is fused to the required distance.

2. Spinning. To catch grayling, you need to choose a spinning rod that allows you to cast light baits. Ultralight with a test of 1-5 g or light rods with a test of 5-15 g are excellent. A 0.15 mm braid is installed. If fishing line is used, then its thickness is the same as on the float rod. To control the wiring, a spinning coil should be installed.

3. Fly fishing. Fly fishing tackle is excellent for catching grayling.
But for comfortable fishing, you need to develop the skill of casting light bait.

A newcomer and the impudent muzzle of a grayling

I'm new to this site so don't kick me in the face with your boots please.

This year, my dream finally came true and I got to Lake Baikal, the first days were spent in the company of my wife, children, my wife’s friend, my wife’s friend’s children, in general it was fun and educational, but at the end of the vacation a bonus awaited me, a trip to a friend’s hunting base in the Baikal region . And so my friend naturally forgot about my arrival and instead of continuous drunkenness in the bosom of wild nature, I waited for myself going out to the scaffold where my wife and daughter were the executioners... But everything ended well, my friend remembered about me the next day and took me to the base, we were traveling for about 70 km from Irkutsk. The base is located in a stunning place, a gorge between the mountains, within a radius of 30 km. not a single person because nature reserve or something like that, entry only with passes. On the first day, of course, we discussed classical prose and poetry, although in the morning we had a severe headache.

All the way to the base, my friend told me about the crowds of bears and goats living around, but... I’m not a hunter, the stories didn’t arouse much interest, but about fishing it was already more interesting, according to him, the main inhabitant of local rivers is grayling, and specimens are less than 400 grams. I don’t come across the standard size 500 - 700 g. There are also up to a kilogram, but it’s rare, you come across flax, but you need to know where to catch it. We went fishing during the day around 12-00, it was hot outside + 30 (it’s raining in Novosibirsk...), because... a lot of mosquitoes had to wear a tracksuit on the river not a single breath of wind in short a full paragraph, the first pool about 50 meters long brought a fairly large grayling from the first cast, then zero but the fish frolics jumping at a distance of 2-3 meters, ignores the bait (float + sinker + two flies), the next whirlpool, Katrina, there are no bites, but the fish jumps and grunts contentedly, a friend suggested going to a reserved hole 300 meters away, but what kind of meters were those... there, damn, you can shoot a film about Rambo, it’s a jungle, I’m a jungle for my size I thought I would just die when I got there. We came to the pit, across the bend of the river there was another tree along it, and between these trees there was a whirlpool of 2 * 1.5 m. And there was someone in it, we cast our fishing rods, there were no bites. Because According to my friend’s stories, this is the only whirlpool where he has never caught anything. I get excited, I want to be the first. At this time, a stir begins in the whirlpool, first a flickering shadow, then no, no, yes, a silver side flashes, and now he is the first throw for some kind of fish, which means there is a fish and it must be caught! I received a proposal from a friend to put up floating flies, honestly I still didn’t understand how they differ from simple ones, but the float and sinker were removed, in the end my task was to lightly touch the water with the flies. At this time, the defendant swam to the periscope depth and began to observe our manipulations. As soon as I cast the flies, he went into the depths, after a few minutes realizing that I was doing some kind of nonsense, he surfaced and began splashing around my gear, eating insects, then we met our eyes and he realized 300 meters of the jungle, the heat, the first fishing should only take place in one - he and the smokehouse. His agility immediately diminished, he again lay down at the periscope depth, I was already tired of keeping the flies on the water, I decided to dip them in the water, brought the fly almost to the nose of this fisherman and then THERE IS!!! my first grayling!!

After that, I caught another one in two days, and my friend caught four. Conclusion: where there are no people, there are a lot of fish and they are big, but you have to be able to catch them.

I received an invitation and am already preparing for winter fishing for omul.

Grayling fishing in June

With the onset of calendar summer, grayling fishing depends on the completion of the fish spawning. In each region, post-spawning feeding begins at different times. This period should be monitored, since during the recovery period the grayling feeds heavily, and this is an excellent time to catch it.

Grayling fishing in June is carried out in the bottom layer and in the water column. When fishing with a spinning rod, a Tyrolean rod rig with a leash up to 1 m long is successfully used. The bait carried away by the current plays and becomes the “prey” of hungry grayling. In June, small spinners and wet flies are suitable. Grayling can be caught with a fly throughout the summer. The main thing is to choose a bait with appropriate buoyancy.

The grayling bite is affected by weather conditions. Fish activity is observed on cloudy days. When the sun is hidden behind the clouds, grayling bite throughout the daylight hours in June. A stable bite in June is also observed in rivers flowing among tall trees, the crowns of which shade areas, and favorable conditions are created for the habitat of grayling.

Tackle for grayling

Grayling fishing in spring, summer and the first half of autumn is possible using several different types of fishing gear. The first place in popularity is taken by the spinning rod, followed by fly fishing tackle and the float rod closing the top three. In the hands of a competent fisherman, any of them can turn out to be very productive, so let’s take a closer look at all of the listed fishing methods.

Spinning

The catchability of a spinning rod in grayling hunting depends on the fisherman’s ability to correctly select the elements of tackle, bait and fishing technique. Experienced spinning anglers recommend using a lightweight ultralight rod, since you will have to fish with miniature baits. Grayling are most interested in small spinners that imitate small fish. The most catchy size is No00, but on Siberian rivers, where impressive specimens weighing up to 3 kg are found, you can use larger spinners or even try fishing with spoons. The requirements for the reel are extremely simple: ease of movement, proper installation, low weight and dimensions. A braided cord with a cross-section of up to 0.12 mm is suitable as the main fishing line. Based on the strength/stealth ratio, then this is an ideal option.

An oscillating spoon can provoke a fairly large fish to bite, but you shouldn’t count on frequent bites. If there is a large number of graylings in the reservoir and they are active, then it is better to choose No00 spinners. First of all, this advice is addressed to beginners who have just begun to master the basics of spinning fishing for the Siberian beauty. It is better to gain experience and hone your skills on a small fish, and besides, the possibility of a trophy specimen being bitten by a rotating spinner is also not excluded.

Success will largely depend on the quality of the wiring. When fishing for grayling with a spinning rod, it should be uniform and as slow as possible. The bait should be on the verge of failure, but the petal should not be allowed to stick. That is why you need to buy only high-quality turntables and first check their performance with the help of leisurely wiring in shallow coastal waters. When fishing, it is advisable to choose a point on the shore of a relative promising area in order to cast the tackle perpendicular to the river. A spinner, which moves under the influence of two forces simultaneously - the reel and the water flow, becomes an ideal bait for grayling.

It has been noticed that on clear sunny days the fish prefer lures with copper petals, while in cloudy and rainy weather they are more interested in lures with a silvery sheen.

Of course, this is not the rule for all reservoirs without exception, because the taste preferences of fish even in neighboring rivers or lakes can differ radically.

Grayling fishing in August

The water level in the rivers drops noticeably, but grayling continues to stick to the bottom depressions. In some regions with a harsh climate, grayling begins to gradually move to the lower reaches of rivers in August. Grayling fishing in August is promising, but the angler must be patient while searching for fish.

It is difficult to determine what fish likes this month. It is advisable to have a set of baits and lures with you. When fishing for grayling in August, it is necessary to cast against the current and float the bait to the maximum possible distance. This is true when fishing with any popular equipment for fishing grayling.

A noticeable cold snap in the second half of August forces grayling to prepare for the winter. In the last days of August, a mass migration of grayling to the lower reaches of rivers may begin. This is a great time to fish for grayling. During the period of mass movement, grayling bites on bait and lures.

If you thoroughly understand the question of how to catch grayling in the summer, and what grayling bites on, then throughout the entire period you can engage in exciting fishing and enjoy your catch. Salmon dishes have excellent taste and are good for the body.

Best lures

For catching grayling, baits such as wobblers and spinners (rotating spoons) are widely popular.

Rotating spinners

  1. Among the leaders in catching spinners for grayling are the Aglia Long No. 00 and Aglia No. 00 spinners from Mepps.
  2. In second place is the Panter Martin No. 1 spinner. This micro-spoon weighs 1g and is designed for fishing in fast currents. The petal of this spinner does not have special adapters for fastening and is mounted directly on the axis of the spinner. She does not lose her game in fast currents even when colliding with rocks. It is also worth noting that this spoon has a minimal number of hooks.
  3. When catching larger grayling, which is found in Siberian rivers, you can use larger baits, such as Aglia Long No. 2 or Comet Decore No. 3 from Mepps, as well as Myran spinners, weighing 7-10g, Blue Fox spinners No. 2- No. 4. In this case, baits of different colors can be used. The color is selected depending on the weather and other factors affecting the grayling bite. In the presence of sun, grayling takes better on copper petals, and on a cloudy day, baits with silver petals are more attractive to them.

Wobblers for fishing on the current

In fast currents, micro-wobblers such as Anglers Republic BM-20 SR are used. The use of wobblers makes fishing more effective, as the spinning angler has additional opportunities, since wobblers are easier to control in significant currents. Suspenders and sinking wobblers have proven themselves well. The main thing is that the bait does not jump to the surface in the presence of a fast current.

  1. The Auglers Repyblic BM – 20SR and BM-25SR come out on top.
  2. A little lower in efficiency is the Agua Bit wobbler, which dives to a depth of 1 meter.
  3. Lures from Yo-Zuri have proven themselves to be quite good. These small baits, called Snap Beans MS, dive to a depth of 0.5 m.

Equipment and accessories

Fishing on a small river, especially on a small forest stream, is a process that requires certain equipment, so it is still necessary to say a few words about the equipment and accessories that you should wear and carry with you.

Tips for fisherman: How to deliciously pickle grayling at home - Answers for beginners

1. Wading boots or waders? I undoubtedly consider wading boots to be the best option here, for the sole reason that the depths on small rivers are shallow, and the river can be crossed along shallow riffles, of which there are plenty on such rivers. If you are going to be fishing on a forest river, then the waders can easily be torn while moving through thickets and fallen trees, so wading boots are an optimal and at the same time budget solution.

2. As I wrote earlier, when successfully fishing for grayling, it is important to remain quiet and inconspicuous, so the equipment you are wearing should not be provocative. Clothing of a camouflage type or that blends into the environment is the best option; I think it’s ridiculous to dress in all the colors of the rainbow.

Perhaps this is all I wanted to convey to readers in the second part of the article. Catch grayling and be sure to release it back to its native element, since such a beautiful and strong fish is certainly the adornment and pride of small rivers.

Oleg Solomatov, a spinning fishing enthusiast with 10 years of experience

Concluding the section dedicated to grayling sites. When you get to the river, you shouldn’t rush into the riffle and try to catch fish there. During the open water season, encountering grayling is possible in almost any part of the river.
