Sea fishing on the Crimean Peninsula is an amazing combination of a pleasant pastime and good business. It is here that everything is in place for active hunting, where pressing matters fade into the background, and the process of obtaining a catch captivates you.
Considering the peculiarities of Crimea - both seas do not freeze - you can fish on its coast almost all year round. To do this, you just need to carefully study the conditions for catching a particular sea creature: the month of spawning, the place and type of bait. Then a good catch will not be long in coming.
Where to fish
There shouldn’t be any problems with choosing a place; there are plenty of them. Often, fishermen prefer the coast of the Azov Sea, the Kerch Peninsula, the southeastern and southern coast of Crimea, and Sivash. What are the reasons for such popularity?
The Azov coast of Crimea attracts the fishing community with the exciting process of fishing in salt water. In the recent past (before the revolution), Kazantip rightfully occupied one of the leading places in the breeding of red fish and the sale of caviar in huge quantities. However, today production has decreased several times, which is very noticeable. Although there are no difficulties with simpler fish here, it is found in sufficient quantities and for every taste. You can fish from the shore or from a boat. The prey includes mullet, goby, glossa flounder, and pelengas.
Sivash is a salty and rather shallow lake, where the goby mainly lives. It is better to fish from a boat, since this representative of the ichthyofauna prefers to stay away from the shore. The Black Sea coast of the Crimean Peninsula and the steep mountains of the Kerch Peninsula are not very suitable for coastal fishing. It is more advisable in this area to go for good fishing from a boat, and the further into the sea, the better. Here you can catch the inhabitants of the Azov Sea, as well as flounder, ruffe, and horse mackerel.
Quite good trophies of the Black Sea ichthyofauna live on the southeastern coast of Crimea. You can fish not only from the shore, but also from a boat. A large concentration of fans of this pastime is observed in the fall (especially in September) on the wild coast from the village of Primorsky to the village of Beregovoe. The fishing process lasts the whole daylight hours, and the intensity of the bite is long and constant. On the southern side of the Crimean Peninsula, to catch large specimens, they move as far as possible from the coastline on a boat. It is there that red mullet, sea bass, horse mackerel, sea fox, etc. are concentrated. If you fish from the shore, you can catch several smaller sea ruffe, dogfish, greenfish and other small inhabitants.
On the western coast of Crimea, the places of Dzhangul and Tarkhankut are considered the most popular for fishing, since you can fish not only from land, but also from a boat. Red mullet, gobies, sea trout, horse mackerel and mullet are common here. Spearfishing is also quite successful.
In addition to tailed representatives, the seabed and submerged stones attract crabs, mussels, and rapans, which makes this area attractive for underwater hunting enthusiasts. Fishing from a boat for the Black Sea katran shark is gaining popularity. In addition to the permanent aquatic inhabitants who stick to the shores of Crimea, you can also meet individuals who swam at the call of instinct - the sterlet. Of course, this fish is freshwater, so you need to hunt it in appropriate places. As a rule, areas are chosen near the decline of the river into the sea, where the water is not so salty. In this area you can also find migratory aquatic inhabitants: certain species of sturgeon and eel. It should be noted that this is not a place for their reproduction, but only for feeding.
Black Sea rockfishing. To Alushta for answers.
Artem is my very good friend. We met him back in Slavyansk, on the shore of our home lake Liman, and since then we have been friends for 5 years. He himself comes from sunny Alushta, and when a turning point occurred in family life, Artem returned to Crimea. He invited me to visit for a long time, but somehow it didn’t work out for me. And now it’s happened - I’m going to Crimea. Until the last moment we planned to stop at Tema, but then we changed our minds and headed to Malorechensk. But I promised my friend that I would definitely come to him. And I didn’t lie: on the third day of our vacation, my wife and I took two tickets to Alushta.
It would have been possible to get to Alushta by bus, but we took tickets for a passenger boat that runs along the southern coast of Crimea. The choice in favor of water transport was made solely because of the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful views of the Crimean mountains.
Artem was freed only at six o’clock in the evening. Until this time, my wife dragged me to Partenit, a picturesque corner of Crimea at the foot of the Ayu-Dag mountain. Bear Mountain (the second name of Ayu-Dag) beckoned with its grandeur and ancient history, but we did not have time to climb. My wife dragged me to Aivazovsky Park - the most beautiful park in Crimea. I agreed, but when I found out the cost of entry to the park at the checkout, I suddenly didn’t want to waste 60 UAH per person on such nonsense. The money is actually small, but in my opinion, it was not worth it! I don't like parks and botanical gardens. There is nothing beautiful about them (IMHO). I call such places “man’s failed attempt to bring nature to perfection.” To be convinced of this, just look at any section of the river, at least 30 km from the city, or, for example, at Bear Mountain (so you don’t have to walk far). My wife listened to me and said that I was stupid and didn’t understand anything about beauty and art. Maybe she's right. In general, we went to Aivazovsky Park. We walked around and looked at the trees, bushes and flowers. It looks beautiful, but... it’s not the right coat. I laughed for a long time at one statue - a naked boy with a pike in his hands. Well, who the hell came up with this idea for a sculpture? Yeah, I really don’t understand anything about art.
We didn’t wander around the park for long, already at about half past five we went to the stop, and at the beginning of seven we were already in Alushta. At the bus stop, Artem met us with open arms. We immediately went to a cafe on the embankment, talked a little about life, and then I gradually moved on to the topic of fishing. I was wondering what kind of fish can be caught at sea with a spinning rod, and where to look for it. Although Artem is a feeder and not a spinning player by life, information from his lips is especially valuable, because he has been fishing at sea for many years, in all seasons and in a variety of ways.
As it turned out, I came out of season. Now, if I had come in June or September, or even better, visited Tema in the spring, then my catch would have been much richer. During the day, greenfinches would not be given rest. Now, in August, there are almost none. In the evening, you could have a blast with crucian carp (weasel). For some reason, it is in August that it moves away from the coast. Only single small individuals remain, which, most likely, break off their tails. But even if there was a small crucian carp on the hook, I would get an unforgettable thrill from fishing. Laskir is one of the most powerful fighters. Another interesting species is the rock perch, or cuckoo fish. Need I say that the last month of summer is not the season for her either? Artem was very surprised that I caught a sea burbot. The fish is rare, and he himself has never caught one in his life. The most interesting trophy that can be hooked is the Black Sea croaker. This is already a serious fish that can reach serious sizes. Previously, croakers were caught well and catching several kilogram specimens in a couple of hours of night fishing was not something special. The last few years have been tense with croakers on the South Coast. The reason is dirty poachers. They hunt with scuba gear at night, selectively killing croakers. There is nothing they can do, there is zero control from the relevant authorities... Does this remind you of anything, friends?
So, what happens is that I catch scorpion fish at night and that’s it? Yes, this is fish number one. There may still be a goby in the bycatch. Artem also advised me to try catching bluefish during the day using the smallest twisters. The fish will bite tiny, but my list of Black Sea trophies will be replenished with one more representative.
The situation became clearer and it became clear to me which fish I should focus on catching and which ones I shouldn’t even waste time on. I thanked Tema for the information provided, and we went for a walk along the embankment. Evening Alushta is something with something. You walk as if through a market. There are tons of people, there is noise and commotion all around. I can imagine what’s going on here on the beach during the day! How good it is that we stopped in Malorechensk. Quiet, calm and did not cause any inconvenience to people. And also, walking through Alushta at night, I literally remembered “The Song about the Horse” every minute.

Herring fishing
Black Sea herring and Danube shad are considered common guests in Crimea. Their habitat is the coast of the Caucasus, and they go to the Don to spawn. When the breeding season ends, the fish returns back to the waters of the Azov Sea. But for wintering, herring chooses the Black Sea water area. The best period for fishing is October. Fishing usually takes place on the coast of the Azov Sea. For hunting, you will need a watercraft, a float rod, and also a tyrant - special gear for predatory fish, which is most often used at sea.
Sea fishing
For lovers of sea fishing, Crimea is an almost ideal place, because both seas - the Black and Azov seas - do not freeze. That's why you can fish at sea almost all year round.
Many people prefer the Azov coast. Not so long ago, Kazantip was rightfully considered the “mecca” of red fish. Unfortunately, today this is no longer the case, but there are no special problems with flounder, goby or pelengas. You can cast a fishing rod both from the shore and from a boat.
Representatives of the ichthyofauna that live in salt water can also be caught on Sivash. This shallow salt lake is rich in goby. It is best to catch it from a boat.
because this fish prefers to stay away from the shore.
The best time to catch goby is from mid-April to the end of May. This popular and sought-after fish can be caught well with bottom fishing rods and various baits. You can use pieces of meat or sprat as them; even a cut bull himself will do. If it is not possible to come fishing during this period, you can catch goby in the summer, but you should remember that the bite will not be as active.
You can improve your fishing skills by fishing for horse mackerel. This silvery fish is caught almost all year round. To catch it, a float rod and a tyrant are used. You can catch horse mackerel all day long, although experienced fishermen note that the bite is noticeably better in the evening.
Another popular fish is flounder. In summer and winter, it lies deep on the bottom, and in spring and autumn it appears in shallow water. It is good to catch flounder using a bottom fishing rod with two sharp hooks.

Catching bonito
In Crimea in the summer you can find bonito, tuna and mackerel. They only prefer to spend the winter in the Mediterranean Sea. Trolling from a boat is ideal here, where it is better to use wobblers with a depth of up to 10 m. Based on the observations of experienced fishermen, determining the optimal area for catching bonito is not so difficult - these are places with boiling water that are surrounded by seagulls.
Spear fishing
The extraordinary beauty of the coastline immediately makes it clear that underwater fishing in Crimea will be excellent. Cape Tarkhankut is rightfully considered the most beautiful place for such entertainment. The water here is unusually clear – you can see up to ten meters deep, and there are a lot of fish living in the underwater reefs and caves. Experienced underwater hunters boast of their trophies, including mullet and mullet, stingrays and flounder.
Balaclava has always been and will be a special place for underwater hunting, and it’s not for nothing that it is still called a “fish bag”. The bottom here is rocky, the water is clear, and therefore horse mackerel, bluefish, mullet and sea bass often become prey.
In general, underwater fishing in Crimea in 2021 is possible wherever they fish from the shore or from boats; by the way, usually local “submariners” willingly work as trainers for beginning spearfishing enthusiasts.
Horse mackerel fishing
The permanent habitat of horse mackerel is the Black Sea, where it can be caught almost all year round. To do this, you don’t need to have special skills, just know the basic points and have high-quality fishing equipment. Horse mackerel fishing is ideal for beginners, where they can practice and increase their experience. Especially during the season, the mackerel catch is quite rich. Generally, the best times to hunt silverfish are spring and fall. It is good to use both a float rod and a tyrant. There is no fundamental time for biting. This fish is excellently caught throughout the daylight hours. However, the most active bite is observed in the late afternoon and after sunrise.
“Fishing Village”: paid fishing and a full range of services
- Address: Simferopol.

At the entrance to Simferopol on the northern side there is a sign “Fishing Village”. The picturesque lake, equipped with gazebos along the perimeter, will allow you to enjoy fishing in silence. There is a lot of fish in it, namely crucian carp, carp, pike, carp and catfish. Specially created conditions contribute to its active biting. Mini-tents in the amount of 20 pieces can accommodate from 6 to 30 people each.
Electricity is supplied everywhere, barbecues, tables and chairs are provided. Prices vary depending on the time and day of visit. For example, an average gazebo on a weekday from 9:00 to 21:00 will cost 4,800 rubles, and from 21:00 to 09:00 – only 1,200 rubles. On weekends the cost will be twice as high. The village also has a bathhouse, a zoo and sports grounds, which will not please you with paid fishing in Crimea on other lakes.
Mullet fishing
In the waters of the Black Sea you can often find representatives of the mullet - sharpnose, mullet, mullet-wrasse, singil, pilengas and ramada. Mullet actively feeds throughout the year. Although local fishermen believe that the optimal period for effective hunting is still the end of autumn and March-April. It is recommended to use a sea worm as bait, and it is better to fish from the shore. The catch size during the entire daylight hours is 3–12 kg. For example, in Balaklava Bay, mullet is found in quite large quantities. March and April in this place are especially rich for lovers of sea fishing, since people come here from all over Crimea and beyond.
Sea fishing
The seas washing the Crimean peninsula have long been famous for the richness and diversity of fish stocks. The vast majority of representatives of the ichthyofauna living here belong to predatory species.
Important! For fishing to be effective, the angler must have information about the most promising places.
Balaclava
Good fishing in Crimea at sea is possible in the vicinity of Balaklava. There were once numerous fishing villages here. Today this place is also very promising from the point of view of amateur fishing. When fishing from the shore, the trophies are:
- greenfinch;
- bulls;
- bluefish;
- horse mackerel;
- sea crucian;
- ruff;
- horse mackerel.
These representatives of the marine environment are usually caught using a rig called “tyrant”, which differs from the usual rigs in a large number of hooks. The bait is fresh shrimp, earthworm or cut fish. Fishing is done from piers and embankments. The most active bite is observed in August and May.
During the period of active fish movement, the embankments of Balaklava are always crowded.
In Balaklava you can rent a yacht or ship and go fishing on the open sea. At great depths there is a high probability of catching the following species of underwater inhabitants:
- flounder;
- sea bass;
- sultana (large red mullet);
- stingray
These predators are caught on a variety of recreational gear throughout the year. However, the best period for fishing in these places is considered to be late autumn, when the mullet bite begins. Many fishermen gather on the embankments and piers of Balaklava in the hope of catching this trophy. Fishing is usually done using float gear. Nereis or shrimp are used as bait.
Kerch
Excellent sea fishing in Crimea often happens in the Kerch area. The area near Cape Chauda is considered especially interesting, where the fish are consistently biting:
- bearing;
- horse mackerel;
- herring;
- mullet;
- flounder.
On a note! These places are famous for their rich catches of large horse mackerel and herring. However, you can only count on a good bite when fishing from a watercraft.
Evpatoria
On the embankments and piers of Evpatoria you can always meet local and visiting anglers who catch a wide variety of fish. Their catches often contain:
- greenfinch;
- bulls;
- mullet;
- ruffs;
- horse mackerel;
- garfish.
This area is home to a large population of mullet. If small fish weighing no more than 300 g bite from the shore, then when going out into the open sea there is a chance of catching an individual weighing several kilograms.
Fishing for red mullet
What does a red mullet look like? It is a relatively small fish belonging to the mullet family. The hunt for mullet is called the sultana. The active start of fishing occurs at the beginning of summer, when the cherry berries acquire their rich, ripe color and the water temperature rises to 19 degrees. This fish is caught throughout the summer using a standard fishing rod and sea worm bait.
Fishing for garfish
Despite its small size, its taste characteristics are impeccable. The process of catching garfish is distinguished by its fascination and incredible excitement. This fish feeds everywhere on the vast Crimean coast. Any simple bait is used as bait, it is better if it is of animal origin. The optimal tackle is a float rod. The amount of bait is determined by the principle “the more, the better”, because there will be no time to rest. Fishing is quite active and long-lasting.
Fishing in Crimea
Fishing in Crimea is open all year round. But given that in Crimea, almost the entire Black Sea coast has been assigned the status of a protected area, there are some restrictions regarding limiting the catch of certain species of fish. Flounder, mullet, sturgeon, mackerel are considered delicious fish species and are subject to some restrictions. But the fishing organizers will definitely inform you about this. If you rent a boat or scow, you will not be taken to prohibited places; the owner of the vessel knows where fishing is allowed. He also knows what type of fish and what place the school of fish has approached. The boat owner will provide you with fishing rods and bait, so you don't have to worry about this. You can order lunch or dinner if you wish. But as a rule, the fishing process takes place early in the morning, so you can take a thermos with tea and sandwiches with you. On the open sea, in the fresh sea air, these sandwiches will seem like real delicacies to you.

Fishing in Sudak
Fishing in Crimea for sea crucian carp.
Fishing from a boat
Sea crucian carp (weasel) differs from its freshwater counterpart not only in appearance, but also in behavior. He is very careful and therefore cannot be found near the beaches during the day. It is caught mainly at a depth of 2-5 meters in places where seaweed or rocks predominate. It bites on sea worms, pieces of mussels, or shrimp. But the weasel’s favorite delicacy is sea crustacean. The weasel is a schooling fish, so if you catch one, expect a good bite.
Fishing in Sudak for bluefish.
Order fishing in the Black Sea
Bluefish is a very strong schooling fish that devours all living things in its path. Therefore, fishing for bluefish in Crimea is a very exciting activity. The jaws of this fish are strong to such an extent that they are capable of biting off the finger of an unwary fisherman. The average size of a bluefish is 30 - 40 cm, but specimens up to 1.5 meters and weighing up to 15 kg are known! You can use any small fish as bait; it is also good to catch with a spoon. The bluefish hunting season is quite short. As a rule, this is July - September.
Fishing for Black Sea herring in Sudak
Herring is perhaps the most famous fish in our country and its popular name is Herring. It is a breed of predatory fish, so smaller fish such as gobies and sprat are used as bait. The average size of herring is 30 cm. It rarely approaches the shore, so it is advisable to sail by boat at least 100 meters from the shore. The peak of the bite is May and early June, then at the end of summer and until winter.
Fishing in the Black Sea for mullet.
Fishing for mullet
Several species of mullet live in the Black Sea. Pelengas, sharpnose, mullet, singil. Inhabits shallow areas of the Black Sea. The best choice of location is a depth of up to 4 meters and preferably a rocky bottom with islands of vegetation. The best bait for mullet is a sea worm, but you can also use such types of bait as bread crumbs, pieces of cheese, and mussels. You need to catch mullet from 50 meters from the shore (although there are many cases of a flock approaching the very shore).
Fishing in the Black Sea for flounder
Flounder fishing
Flounder is a very interesting fish - a chameleon. Fleeing from enemies, it is able to change its color and adapt to its environment. Scientists conducted experiments with flounder, placing it in an aquarium, the bottom of which was painted like a chessboard; soon the flounder changed its color and also became a chessboard. Flounder has a flat surface, but despite this, it has a huge mouth due to which it is capable of swallowing rather large prey. Catching this fish is quite difficult, but interesting. It bites literally on everything that moves, but the difficulty is that in summer it comes no closer than 500 meters to the shore. The best fishing time is evening and night. Also, immediately after a storm, flounder can come close to the shore.
Goby fishing in the Black Sea.
Goby fishing
Goby fishing in the Black Sea is an activity that does not require any skills. In Crimea it is difficult to find a place where there is no bull. It bites at almost any time of the year and on any bait. But still, the goby that lives in the Crimea has 10 species. Therefore, there are some preferences in choosing a fishing location. For example, the sandstone goby is found near the shore and hides in the sand; an ordinary goby prefers a rocky bottom. The size of this fish is usually not that large, but there are records. For example, a specimen is known to be up to half a meter long and weighing 1.2 kg.
Catching stingrays in Crimea
Catching stingray in Crimea
Stingray "Cat"
Catching stingray in Crimea under the interesting “Cat” is a very exciting activity. This is a very strong, fast and cunning inhabitant of the Black Sea. Its wing-shaped fins allow it to move at incredible speeds with virtually no noise. The stingray lives close to the shore at shallow depths. It prefers a sandy, flat bottom, where it is almost invisible. This type of stingray has a tail at the back, at the end of which there is a dangerous spike. Fishermen usually know safety precautions when encountering this unusual inhabitant of the Black Sea. The stingray strikes with this spike when there is a certain danger to itself, for example, if you step on it. Catching the “Cat” stingray is a fascinating, but thankless task. Not everyone knows how to cook the meat of this stingray properly. Therefore, if he is hooked, he is released back into the sea. But if, with certain knowledge, you cook it correctly, the taste will pleasantly surprise you. If you don’t know how to do this, then it’s better not to try, otherwise there is a danger of poisoning.
Stingray "Fox"
The "Cat" stingray has a close relative called the "Fox". This type of stingray is not dangerous to humans, despite the many spines located on its back and tail. Outwardly, the fox looks quite menacing, which is facilitated by its coloring. Without knowing, you can easily confuse these stingrays. Fox meat is edible and has a unique taste. They prepare delicious fish soup from the wings and head, and delicious cutlets from the body itself. They also cook shish kebab with it or simply fry it in a frying pan. These stingrays are caught on bottom gear using small anchovy or goby as bait. The fishing line, rod and hooks must be strong. These stingrays are incredibly strong and easily break fishing rods, tear fishing lines and bend hooks. The preferred fishing time is night.
