The story of how the Japanese created Nara Dreamland - a terrible place on earth

Let's have a fun ride

The park's designers were inspired by the original Disneyland landscape. Some even called the rides Japan's answer to the famous amusement park. Nara Dreamland had the same main street, many of the basic principles were reproduced, a steel roller coaster was to become the hallmark of the Japanese park, which, by the way, copied the Matterhorn bobsleigh track. However, judging by the photo, one cannot say that everything turned out very well.

Nara Dreamland - an abandoned amusement park in Japan

Nara Dreamland -

was created to provide a smile on the face and an unforgettable experience, after closing it showed its second, scary face. Nara Dreamland is currently one of the scariest fairs in the world. Once it was lively, today it certainly doesn't remember how much fun it could bring.

The idea for an amusement park in Narze arose in the mid-1950s when Japanese entrepreneur Kunizo Matsuo visited the United States. During his visit to Los Angeles, he visited the newly founded Disneyland in Anaheim. This American amusement park impressed the Japanese so much that they realized that such a place was missing in their country. According to him, the ideal city for investment was the first capital of Japan - Nara.

Kunizo, as a representative of Matsuo Entertainment, has been in contact with Disenya's management for many months, who have been helping throughout the entire project. Problems arose during one of the last meetings between Walt Disney and Kunizo. The gentlemen couldn't agree on licensing fees for the studio's biggest stars—Donald Duck, Mickey the mouse, or Pluto the dog. The Japanese side said that they were too high. As a result, an agreement was impossible, but Matsuo did not give up. The new amusement park's own characters were created, and on July 1, 1961, Nara Dreamland was opened in place of Nara Disneyland.

Over the years, Nara Dreamland functioned very well and was frequently visited by the Japanese. Problems began in 1983 with the opening of the original Tokyo Disneyland. Residents of the capital and surrounding areas no longer needed to travel to Nara, which was almost 500 km away, and could rest for a moment near home. Another big blow was the creation of Universal Studios 40 km from Nara Osaka. The city in Nara, left in technology, is visited by fewer and fewer people every year. By comparison, in recent years it was only 400,000 people per year (the record was 1.6 million people), while Tokyo Disneyland hosted almost 13 million people. As a result, after 45 years of operation, it was decided to close it, and the last guests were served here on August 31, 2006.

Bird's-eye

Interestingly, there have been complaints from people that they have heard unusual noises in certain areas of the park, especially in the area of the boat dock. It's likely that a place that looks like a horror movie set should simply be filled with ghosts and evil spirits. But this theory still goes against common sense. Experts say the sounds were made by water pumps or even frogs.

Somehow sad

Since the park was going to be an exact replica of Disneyland, everything had to be identical. In particular, the car rides, monorails, and its own main street were popular with visitors. By the way, the fee for using the entertainment was collected at the entrance, so long queues formed only once.

The land of dreams remained in memories

On August 31, 2006, the park saw its last visitor. At that time, Tokyo Disneyland could not keep up with the times and the rapidly developing business, so its attendance dropped sharply to 400 thousand people a year. Since then it has become abandoned. Brave explorers from time to time entered the park to see its fading beauty. Guards patrolled the area, but it was so large that it was almost impossible to meet them face to face.

What does it look like today

The park's last working day was the last day of August 2006. Traditionally, the closure of any complex (shopping, sports, entertainment) is accompanied by the resale of the site to new owners who are able to use the place for another, more successful business. In the case of Dreamland, the situation was different. It is unknown whether the owners tried to sell the territory, and if so, for what reason they failed, the complex was closed and left to deteriorate under the influence of the weather. Over the years, desolation is felt more and more in this (now frankly eerie) place. Fans of thrilling experiences could not ignore this opportunity.

The influx of unofficial tourists is growing year by year. The network is full of notes from those who illegally entered the territory where fun once reigned. The area is surrounded by a high fence, guarded and patrolled. Unsuccessful violators who fall into the hands of the guards will face expulsion, accompanied by a fine. Information about caught single tourists and groups regularly appears in the media. The effectiveness of the measures, however, is low; over the years, the number of people wishing to do so only increases.

Abandoned park is scary

It is known that a larger fine is issued if violators not only entered the restricted area, but also destroyed something - this entails charges of vandalism. Some are sure that the guards, wanting to receive a reward for their capture, provide evidence of vandalism for everyone caught. Only now there are fewer and fewer security guards, so the availability of the site has increased. Numerous videos and photos indicate that the surviving objects in Dreamland are painted with graffiti, and many objects have disappeared.

By the way, the unsuccessful experiment of Japanese entrepreneurs turned out to be to the taste not only of tourists seeking thrills. “Dreamland” has attracted the attention of local residents: it is convenient for walking dogs. And the guards finally stopped paying attention to strangers.

Demolition is just around the corner

Since in Japan, essentially every piece of land is incredibly valuable, it is strange that an abandoned park has not been turned into something more worthwhile. In fact, they will soon transform it. The fact is that the land was purchased by the construction company SK Housing in November 2015. It is not difficult to guess what will happen in this place in the near future. Housing for retirees will be built here. It would be fun to live in a place that was previously reserved for children's fun activities.

The trip to abandoned Disneyland was not at all like a fairy tale, but we managed it

Passion for abandoned objects is a huge expense item in my budget, personal time and the nerves of those around me.
