How to care for a PVC boat?
Every fisherman wants to have his own boat. This is not surprising, since having a watercraft makes your favorite hobby even more exciting and productive. Both fishermen living near water bodies and urban fishermen are eager to purchase this or that model. For the latter, PVC inflatable boats are considered the most convenient and profitable.
On the side of such boats are compactness, lightness and cross-country ability. They are convenient to take with you, easy to store, and modern boats last much longer. In order for the boat to always remain in working order, it must be properly cared for. We will talk about the features of caring for a PVC boat in this article.
Cleanliness is the key to durability
First of all, your inflatable flotation device must be clean. Dirt, algae, sand tend to damage the demanding PVC mechanically or chemically. Therefore, at the end of the season, the boat must be thoroughly washed and dried. For washing, do not use abrasives, graters, or brushes. Among the detergents, the best would be a gel or a solution of laundry soap. When washing, pay special attention to folds. Sand, scales, and dust must be removed from them. After washing, the boat is rinsed and dried. Do not dry in the open sun. It is better to leave the boat under a canopy. Otherwise, the PVC may crack. When the boat is completely dry, it can be treated with special compounds that are sold in fishing stores. If you plan to store your boat in a garage, you will need to take rodent repellent measures. There are special means for this. Additionally, the boat can be secured in such a way that it is more difficult for mice to reach it. For example, to the ceiling or to the wall. Of course, you need to take measures to deratize the premises.
Proper storage is also important
The PVC boat is placed for storage either assembled or unfolded. Before this, she is lowered. You can lay out the watercraft on the floor and cover it with a tarpaulin. Moreover, they make sure that there are no rough folds. When assembling, follow the manufacturer's recommendations. Do not place heavy objects on a stored boat or throw boards or other rubbish at it. This way the product will quickly become unusable. The oars are stored separately, connecting them to each other. You can make your own cover for them from thick, waterproof fabric.
Much depends on the proper use of the boat
Any storage recommendations may be useless if you do not follow basic handling precautions while fishing. It is advisable to protect the boat from contact with sharp stones and plants (for example, reeds), and use sharp objects (knives, harpoons) in it with caution. For hooks and other fishing devices you need to take containers, boxes, bags.
By being attentive and careful, you can protect the watercraft from damage and maintain its performance for many years. If your boat did get damaged while fishing, check out our article on how to repair a PVC boat with your own hands.

Seam welding and gluing
How was the gluing done and how strong are the welds?
The inflatable boat is made from PVC sheets welded together. These can be open seams or isolated. In the second option, additional reinforcing tape is applied over the welding, protecting the joint from rupture and excessive pressure. It is the seams that are the weakest point of the boat, and they are the first to tear if you run into driftwood or snags while fishing. Boat with closed joints
is more preferable and is worth choosing.
We also look at the gluing. These are attachments of additional modules to the frame of the boat. For example, oarlocks are simply glued to boats. Two methods are used: cold and hot. There is an opinion that the hot method is better, but this is an outdated misconception. Today, both gluing methods are equally reliable
, and marriage is easily determined by eye. If the module is glued well and no defects are visible, you can safely take the boat, and it does not matter how the modules were connected.
Proper boat care
In order for your inflatable boat to serve you as long as possible, you need to take care of it. Our consultants have prepared a review that reveals the important nuances of winter and summer care for PVC boats: a well-maintained watercraft is not only pleasing to the eye, but also meets safety criteria. Interesting? Then let's read!
What do a professional fisherman, a duck hunter and an extreme tourist who prefers water recreation have in common? That's right: for each of them, a PVC inflatable boat is not a luxury, but a means of transportation. Those who decide to join their friendly ranks should know: just buying a boat is not enough. It is also important to learn how to care for it, keeping it in perfect condition.
Inflatable boat in winter: storage secrets
At the end of the summer season, the watercraft must be washed. The usual careless shaking out of garbage and rinsing is not enough: mice living in sheds and pantries willingly gnaw on products that smell deliciously like fish scales and the remains of a fisherman’s breakfast. Even the five-layer reinforced PVC with anti-fungal properties, from which the Ladya inflatable boats are made, will succumb to them, let alone less durable materials.
After removing dry debris, wipe particularly dirty areas with a damp sponge soaked in dish soap.
Now you can rinse your beauty with a stream of water from a hose or simply remove any remaining detergent with a damp cloth. Happened? Dry. And - feel free to leave it indoors, slightly lowering the cylinders. It is advisable to hang it from the ceiling, thus protecting it. from toothy creatures. Or deflate the watercraft and pack it in a special boat bag (included in the basic package).
Did you know?
Inflatable boat in summer: daily care
With proper care, the service life of a watercraft can approach infinity. Our consultants recommend: use transom wheels when launching an inflatable boat, rather than dragging it. That. you will protect the cylinders and bottom from damage, yourself from an unplanned swim if it comes to punctures and cuts, and your wallet from unnecessary expenses for repairs or the purchase of a new motorboat or rowing vessel.
An exception (rare!) is possible only if we are talking about the Ladya motor boat. Why is that? It's all about a recent innovation: the cylinders of models in this series equipped with a stationary transom are equipped on the bottom side with special protective PVC bumpers (the so-called “skis”). Our designers did this on purpose - the “skis” minimize the risk of damaging the cylinders.
Caution: silicone!
The windows of specialized stores are full of labels that protect polyvinyl chloride from sunlight. In general, this is a good thing. The main thing is that it does NOT contain silicone. When exposed to high temperatures, it enters into a chemical reaction with the top layer of PVC, negatively affecting its strength.
By the way: a freshly applied protective agent makes polyvinyl chloride slippery. When spraying it, be as careful as possible! And it’s better to do without it altogether: high-quality PVC does not need additional protection, it’s impossible to personally control the chemical composition of the product, and - most importantly - absolutely all manufacturers say: inflatable boats smeared with something unknown are not covered by the warranty.
Choosing a PVC boat
Depending on your hobby, you need to choose a boat for yourself. If you need a boat for hunting, then preference is given to some characteristics, for fishing - to others, and for tourism - to others.
For hunting
The first thing that novice hunters should know is that there are no specialized boats for hunting. Any vessel that meets the basic characteristics - stability, durable material, high maneuverability and controllability - is suitable for these purposes. The main selection criterion: the color should blend with the environment
.
This is especially true for hunting birds, which have excellent eyesight - they will immediately notice a bright spot that does not fit into the landscape. As a rule, hunters choose rowing
modifications - they are light weight, compact, and move silently along the surface of the water.
It is easier to deliver a rowing boat to places that cannot be reached by car. However, if the lake area is large or you need to swim along the river for a long time to your destination, getting there by motor vehicle will be faster and safer. Therefore, many people choose combined versions - motor-rowing
with a low-power engine.
In addition to the camouflage color, you need reliable and capacious cylinders that ensure structural stability, spacious space for storing equipment and several sealed compartments. If several cylinders are accidentally damaged, the product will still remain afloat. Boat Breeze 240 (green) Tonar 10,550 for 1 piece.

For fishing
As for the requirements for fishing boats, camouflage color does not play a decisive role here, although bright colors are unlikely to be appropriate in this case either. Basic requirements - maneuverability
,
stability
,
lightness
and
compactness
.
It is important that the transport is convenient and easy to deliver to the place. It is more convenient to move if there is a keel, and a hard bottom
guarantees balance if a large fish suddenly bites.

For tourism
For tourism, they usually purchase light and compact boats - inflatable kayaks and kayaks. Their main advantage is speed, maneuverability and the ability to avoid obstacles along the shore. They are characterized by their low weight and simple design, but low load capacity. They have a shallow draft, so they easily overcome shallow waters and can approach where a heavy boat will get stuck. When choosing, you should take into account the purpose of the boat, the comfort of the seats, the size of the luggage compartments, and the total weight of the vessel.
Other selection criteria
In addition to the criteria listed above, there are universal characteristics of boats that you should pay attention to when purchasing:
- Dimensions
– it all depends on the number of passengers. If you prefer to spend time alone, choose a vessel with a length of about 2.5-3 m. It is important that all the necessary equipment is comfortably placed on the deck. - Density
- the more layers a material has, the lower the risk of damage. This is especially true for high-speed vessels - a collision at speed with snags and stones can cause the cylinder to rupture. - The presence of a transom
- even if you are not going to install the engine on the stern, this device is suitable for using other auxiliary devices, for example, a stationary fishing rod. - Conditions of use
– to cover long distances you will need powerful motor modifications with a length of 3.5 m or more. For recreation on small lakes, smaller versions are suitable. - Type of assembly
- if you fish alone, purchase small models without a keel.
There are other options of choice that will be of interest to experienced fishermen and hunters - the presence of an anchor eye
,
a bleed valve
and a device for
draining water
from the side without capsizing the boat.

How to properly store and care for a PVC boat?
Undoubtedly, it is important for every owner of a PVC inflatable boat, regardless of whether he is a professional fisherman, a duck hunter or an extreme tourist who prefers active recreation on the water, to learn how to properly care for it. After all, not only the service life of the swimming device, but also the safety of the user on the water depends on this. Therefore, timely and proper care of your PVC boat will help keep it in perfect condition for as long as possible. Based on this, we will consider the features of maintenance and the secrets of storing PVC boats at various points in their operation.
Caring for a rubber and PVC boat after each use: main nuances
Almost every new owner of a rubber or PVC boat wants to extend its service life as much as possible. And this is not surprising. But how can this be achieved? The answer is quite simple: proper care of a swimming device not only guarantees its attractive appearance, but also preserves its performance characteristics. However, it is important to remember that a PVC boat and a rubber watercraft have some differences in care, which we will discuss in more detail. Therefore, caring for a PVC boat after each use involves the following steps:
As for proper care of a rubber boat, it is carried out in the following sequence:
However, if there is not enough time to wash an inflatable boat on a pond, this procedure must be done at home. After all, a dirty and damp vessel can not only rot or deteriorate, but also become easy prey for rodents attracted by the characteristic smell.
How to store an inflatable rubber and PVC boat in winter: basic secrets
At a time when the sorceress winter is slowly coming into its own, gradually encasing the water surface with ice, every avid fisherman or admirer of boat trips should make sure that his faithful “friend” - be it a rubber or PVC boat - is carefully transferred to secure storage place. Both a garage and a warm shed can become such a haven for wintering an inflatable watercraft.
However, both the care and storage of a rubber boat and PVC vessel have some distinctive features. Which ones exactly? Let's look at it below. So, let’s look at some tips that will make it clear how to properly store a PVC boat so that it looks like new when spring comes:
If we talk about the winter storage of a rubber boat, then, like a PVC boat, it must be washed and dried before storage. But it is worth noting that there are some differences regarding the storage of rubber watercraft. Namely:
So, a set of simple procedures related to the proper care and storage of PVC boats and rubber watercraft significantly increases their service life.
Maintenance and care of the inflatable boat
You have been struggling with choosing an inflatable boat for a long time. And in general they were thinking about whether to buy a boat or not. As a result, we bought a PVC inflatable boat. Water overboard. It would seem that everything is fine and there is nothing to be afraid of. Still, there is one big “BUT”. Before going out on the water on any vessel, and in our case it is an inflatable boat, be sure to thoroughly study this vessel. Practice in shallow water first. Feel the boat and the motor, so to speak (if the inflatable boat has a motor). We also recommend that all passengers on board wear life jackets. Well, the boat itself must be in good condition, of course. Now we’ll talk about the maintenance and care of the inflatable boat.
Basic design
What kind of steering is the boat designed for?
Thanks to its light weight, the inflatable boat can be easily moved with the help of oars. But rowing by hand over long distances can be difficult, so it is better to use an outboard motor. The ideal option is a universal design
, equipped with both oarlocks and transom.
This will be the most expensive model, but the most convenient. In reed thickets or in shallow water you can easily move by oars. Plus, rowing doesn't scare away the fish. And if you need to move a long distance, just lower the motor and move on it. On the other hand, if fishing takes place exclusively in small rivers or lakes, it makes no sense to overpay for a transom
. In this case, you can save a lot of money on it.

Transportation
Before transporting the inflatable boat, make sure it is free of sand and dirt. If transported on a trailer (this primarily applies to RIB inflatable boats), be sure to place something soft under the bottom to prevent damage to the keel part on the frame of the trailer. If the boat is transported in a deflated state and in the trunk of a car, then before transportation, pack it in a transport bag in order to avoid accidental damage from sharp objects.

If the rubber boat is transported in a deflated state and is in the trunk of a car, then before transporting it, pack it in a transport bag in order to avoid accidental punctures on sharp objects. The inflatable boat must be placed in the trunk of the car separately from other luggage and no large items should be placed on it. On the road, especially long-distance, vibration under the load of heavy solid objects located on top can damage the rubber inflatable boat, in particular, wear out the seam or cause other trouble.

Features of the material and storage conditions of fishing boats
What is the best way to store a PVC boat? It would seem that there should not be any difficulties or problems here, since unlike inflatable boats made of rubberized fabric, which rot and rot, PVC boats are much more durable and impervious to moisture in a warm atmosphere and tight twisting, which literally kills rubber boats.
Caring for a PVC boat is also necessary because no matter how durable the boat is, it will quickly lose its attractive appearance from prolonged direct exposure to ultraviolet rays, that is, from the scorching sun. And this happens when a boat lies abandoned for a long time on the shore right under the rays of the midday star. First of all, the material itself will burn out, and at the first stage only the pigment will discolor, but then the polymer base composition of the PVC material will begin to change. “Well, let it be, should we admire the boat and not fish?” - some careless owner of a small boat will say. There is some truth in this. The boat is a workhorse. But a real owner will take care of his horse so that it serves faithfully for a long time. In addition, most fishermen prefer to be in a clean and beautiful boat, calling it “swallow” and other affectionate epithets.
PVC boats have not only conventional enemies, but the most living and active ones. These are various rodents, among which mice are the most dirty and active, which can gnaw on completely inedible things just to gnaw... More intelligent and pragmatic rats commit such sabotage less often, although they are also seen in these senseless acts of vandalism. They can very readily attack a rubber boat, which, for better preservation, has been sprinkled with starch for the winter.
All thoughts about how best to store a PVC boat will be meaningless if the small vessel has not been thoroughly washed after fishing. River sand has a particularly detrimental effect on the safety of the boat. And most often, fishing takes place on a large river, where sand bars are not uncommon. Usually they are chosen by fishermen for parking and piers. The sand here sometimes crunches on your teeth after a fish soup that has been filled with sand into the pot. And this often happens in the summer heat, when the sand is dry and volatile. And, of course, a lot of sand also gets into the boat, falling from the boots of anglers climbing into a small boat. Even after rinsing the boat and turning it upside down, some of the sand remains between the cylinders, bottom and floor.
Types of housing materials
The choice of materials depends on what material the body is made of and what budget is allocated. What types of boat hulls are there? Let's look at them in descending order of popularity.
Housing made of duralumin alloy. These are Soviet riveted boats, which are still found in abundance on reservoirs. There are several types of alloys: D1AT - Kazanka, Oka-4 is made of D16T, the Ob motorboat uses D16 in combination with D1. They were painted with VL-02 primer and XV-16 paint.- Welded aluminum-magnesium alloy housings. For example, Soviet motor boats Crimea, made from AMg5. Modern boats are welded from AMG5M. In new buildings, instead of painting, PVC film is mainly used.
Fiberglass housings made of fiberglass and its varieties, impregnated with polyester (less commonly, epoxy) resin. A gelcoat dyed in the mass is used as the outer layer.- Plywood bodies. Mostly self-built. They are based on waterproof plywood covered with fiberglass impregnated with epoxy resin. They are painted with epoxy paints, for example, EP-140.
- Inflatable boats made of rubberized fabric, PVC and Hypolon. Rubber boats are becoming obsolete; boats made from high-poly rubber are almost never seen due to the high cost and peculiarities of repair. The most popular boats are made of PVC. The material of the cylinders is dyed in the mass. To change the color, it’s easier to change the boat, since now the range of colors, including camouflage, is quite large.
- Boats made of thermoplastic and polyethylene are practically never found on Russian water bodies. Thermoplastic is used in some Polish and Finnish boat models, while polyethylene is good for small hunting boats and kayaks. Boats made from these materials are painted in bulk and do not require painting during operation.
Steel hulls, as a rule, are used on inexpensive boats of the “Volga party” type and expensive cruise hulls. The owners of the former are satisfied with oil paint, while the latter usually entrust painting to specialized shipyards.- Wooden cases. In the central region they are practically not used. They are painted with resin, varnish or oil paint depending on the purpose.
In this article we will briefly look at how to paint a boat made of aluminum alloy and fiberglass.
Detergents for PVC boats
Before we dwell on the topic of how to properly store a PVC boat in winter, let’s return to the issue of cleanliness of the boat. And this is especially important before long-term storage in winter. Since special materials are used for the manufacture of small PVC boats, detergents can be more specialized. If for washing a boat made of rubberized fabric you can get by with soap foam, then for most boats made of polyvinyl chloride and other similar materials, manufacturers recommend narrow profile detergents, which include, in particular, “303 Aerospace Protectant”. According to the manufacturers of this drug, it provides one hundred percent protection from ultraviolet rays, or simply from fading of the material in the sun. In addition, this product helps restore the original color of the boat material.
It has a repellent property in contact with dust, dirt, sand and oil splashes. Protects against the appearance of ice, freezing of small boat material and mold formation. According to representatives of the manufacturer, the use of the detergent “303 Aerospace Protectant” increases the life of the boat without a major wash, and if necessary, a small PVC boat is easy to clean. This drug is safe for the ship owner.
What is the best way to store a PVC boat and bring it into proper shape if stains have already appeared on its material and have become ingrained into the structure of the material? Under no circumstances should petroleum products or organic solvents be used. This can lead to a breakdown in the strength of the material in the area where the solvent or gasoline is applied. Ordinary household chemicals can also be among the drugs harmful to PVC material. Manufacturers of various inflatable boats, boats and even yachts recommend another detergent, which is used to remove oil and other stains ingrained into the structure of the material, and also as a means of protection from an aggressive external environment. This is 303 Fabric/Vinyl Cleaner. In the annotation for the drug, the manufacturer reports that the product is completely safe and environmentally friendly, containing no nitrates, phosphates and alkalis. It is also said to be effective in removing the most stubborn stains.
It seems that, despite the solid recommendations of world firms and manufacturing companies, it is necessary to look in the instructions for the purchased boat for the recommendations of the manufacturer of a small boat for this particular boat, if there are any in the instructions.
After thoroughly washing the boat, you need to dry it well and then you can prepare your small boat for a long winter in a warm dock, that is, in an apartment, in a house, in a country house, in a garage.
