How to choose an ice screw for winter fishing. professional advice + video

Background

In 2004, a fateful event took place for the Mora company - the merger of two large companies Frosts and KJ Eriksson for joint development, production and sale of improved ice drills.
For information: in 1955, the Mora company released the first ice drill, which immediately found its fans. The product was distinguished by unusual spoon-shaped knives.

Thanks to its performance characteristics, Swedish steel is recognized as one of the best in the world. The very history of the creation and development of this enterprise began three centuries ago, when in a small town craftsmen began to try to make knives in home workshops.

The hallmarks of the city of Mora were used as a distinctive sign. This is how the glorious Mora hunting and kitchen knives appeared. The peculiarity of such products lies in the material used – high-quality carbon steel.

Story

Mora is one of the few companies that has not moved production to Asia, and all its knives are made in a small family factory in the provincial town of Mura, Sweden. What’s even more amazing is that the knives produced in this town have been known all over the world for over 400 years! The reason for this is large deposits of iron ore of excellent quality, which allowed the small town to become the center of forging production in the region.

As for the Mora company, it was founded in 1891 by Frost-Erik Erson - his workshop did not offer any particularly unique product, they were all the same traditional Swedish knives that were made by almost everyone in the area. But he was able to bring the production of these traditional knives to very high quality and large volumes, purposefully entering the US and Asian markets for the first time.

Over the next 100 years, Eric and his followers managed to gather under their command all the blacksmith shops in Mura, producing ice screws, axes and much more, and the name of a small town in Sweden became synonymous with excellent working tools for very modest money.

Now the Mora factory employs not only people, but also dozens of robots - with the help of their joint work, it is possible to produce up to 10,000 knives per shift! Such huge volumes make Mora knives so affordable, and the company’s management promotes the idea that every person on Earth should have a Mora knife.

How to sharpen the knives of a Swedish ice drill?

Today, many anglers are happy owners of Swedish ice screws. However, the advantage that rounded knives provide when drilling ice turns into a significant inconvenience when sharpening.

It is a rare grinder who can truly sharpen a cutting tool. For this reason, the fisherman himself must learn how to put such knives into working condition.

Let's look at two ways to sharpen a Swedish ice drill:

Manual sharpening is carried out using a semicircular file and sandpaper with grit H4-H6. The sandpaper is cut into pieces 3-4 cm wide. The length of the strip depends on the parameters of the file. The sandpaper is bent under the tip of the file, and on the other side is held near the handle with your fingers. The ice drill blade must be secured using a vice. To do this, two standard screws are clamped in the jaws, onto which the knife will be seated. Sharpening is performed with straight-line movements toward you, observing the angle of inclination of the tool. When the actions are brought to automaticity, the sharpening process will take no more than 5-10 minutes.

The mechanical method of sharpening Swedish knives will require a special machine equipped with a burr. It can be replaced with an electric drill with a cutter. The knife itself is also attached in a vice, but in order not to remove an excess layer of metal, the surface to be treated must be painted with an alcohol marker

When working, it is important to monitor the trajectory of the electrical appliance. The first passes are made without pressure, and when the actions are memorized by the muscles of the hands, the work will take a matter of minutes. During such sharpening, it is necessary to use locksmith safety glasses to prevent abrasive from getting into your eyes.

Each of the described methods is acceptable for high-quality sharpening of ice drill knives.

For a beginner in this activity, it is important not to rush; the first movements should be slow but precise. A dozen monotonous repetitions, and the muscles will remember every gesture

After this, you can speed up the process, not forgetting to periodically monitor the sharpening.

A little time and effort spent will subsequently be compensated for the angler by comfortable drilling holes in the pond.

Sharpening a Swedish ice screw

Every fisherman has probably heard about this ice drill; it creates a hole incredibly quickly and cuts the edge of the ice very well. The company that produces these ice screws is Mora; specialists have developed unique knives with a curve and different sharpening angles. Thanks to this feature, holes can be created very quickly.

But there is one drawback: when the knives become dull, many fishermen have a stupor, since the angle of the blade is different and they do not know how to sharpen it.

It’s really difficult to do this, but don’t buy a special device for sharpening an ice ax. It is better to sharpen it manually, in which case the sharpening error will be smaller; we will discuss this method below.

The blade should be firmly clamped in a vice, this will greatly simplify sharpening. Next, take some H6 grit sandpaper and a round file.

Cut the sandpaper into strips 3 centimeters wide, then take the strip and wrap the file around the edges, you need to secure it with wire.

Sharpening must be done with movements toward you, while maintaining the angle that was assigned to the blade at the factory.

We are sure that the article was useful for you, now you know why you need a grinding machine for sharpening ice axes and how you can sharpen the blade of an ice axle. We wish you success and be careful when sharpening!

Selecting auger blades

Experienced fishermen have developed their own rules for selecting knives for augers.

  • The dimensions of the augers with blades must correspond to the fishing conditions: to drill a hole with a large diameter there is no point in using a small drill.
  • When purchasing, carefully read the certificates: the country of origin of Mora is Sweden, but not Asian countries. Low-quality steel blades are a waste of money.
  • The inability to predict the type of ice before fishing is the reason for using more universal knives - spherical ones - instead of straight knives.
  • A set of Mora blades cannot be cheap (in current year prices it is at least 1,500 rubles).
  • When buying blades, take care of their safety during transportation - don’t forget to buy covers. This will also protect the fisherman from accidental injury.

Models and their characteristics

To decide on the purchase of a drill, let’s analyze the models that are most often mentioned by sellers and buyers.

The entire model range can be divided into the following groups:

  • inexpensive drills for beginners;
  • more expensive and technically complex for amateurs and professionals;
  • ice screws for winter sport fishing;
  • elite drills.

One of the simplest and most inexpensive options is ICE SPIRALEN. Flat knives force you to drill a hole longer. But the model is very effective on multi-layer and wet ice. Due to the presence of knives of different diameters (175 and 200 millimeters), it is possible to increase the diameter of the hole. An axial lock on the handle will make the drill more compact.

The tool is capable of drilling through ice 95 cm thick. When folded, the length is up to 80 cm. When working, it is 150 cm, including the auger has a length of 47–55 cm.

It is possible to use an electric drill or screwdriver using an 18 mm adapter, as well as a 31.5 cm extension. The color of the auger is blue.

In the same category ICE EASY. A distinctive feature is the absence of a folding unit. This option will allow beginners to handle the model more freely without fear of damaging it at the bend. There is an extension cord. Technical characteristics are similar to the previous drill. Weight about 3 kg. The color is also blue.

The “professional fishermen” category is represented by the model for thin ice (up to 85 cm) ICE MICRO. When folded, it is 53 cm long and can fit into a backpack. In use - up to 137 cm (the extension can be fixed four times and the length can be increased to 46 cm). The length of the auger is 34 cm. All this makes the drill light - 2.2–3.2 kg, depending on the modification. Spherical knives of several diameters: 110, 130, 150, 200 mm. The screw color is red.

For professionals, there is the ICE ARCTIC model, used in cold winters on thick ice cover of the reservoir. An eighty-centimeter auger is capable of drilling through ice up to 1.6 m thick. A folding handle coupled with an extension increases the ability to drill through two-meter ice and even more. When folded, the drill has a length of 114 cm. There are 3 modifications in the size of spherical knives: 110, 130, 150 mm. Weight – from 3.4 to 4.2 kg. The screw color is yellow.

The Mora ICE Expert has been serving sports fishermen for a long time. Now its place has been taken by the more modern ICE Expert Pro. The model is equipped not only with a folding handle, but also with a telescopic handle.

The auger length is 48–58 cm. The maximum ice thickness is 120 cm. It has four modifications, like the ICE MICRO, but with modernized spherical blades to increase the penetration speed. The 31 cm extension can be purchased separately, but plastic covers for knives are included in the kit. The screw color is green.

The speed of drilling holes and their number in a certain time are fundamental indicators for sport fishing. This is why motorized ice augers are so valuable. Among Moras, this is, for example, ICE S-140 (Solo 3.0hp). Light weight, quiet 3 liter engine. With. and a spacious tank of 0.68 liters. Weight – 9.5 kg. Can be purchased separately or as a set with an auger. Screw color – black.

The newest in the range is the Mora Nova System. It is positioned as a construction set for fishermen, since you can buy its individual elements and assemble the ice screw that is required.

In the manual version, the drill is 10% lighter than other models. The main feature is the removable cutting head made of composite materials. The ability to replace elements allows you to save money: it is enough to buy removable heads with a diameter different from the size of the ice drill, so as not to buy another auger or drill. Head diameter: 110, 130, 160 mm.

The length of the auger is 42–80 cm, and the drill in working condition is 130–175 cm. Weight is 2.3–3.45 kg. The maximum ice thickness is 90–120 cm.

Replaceable spherical knives can be standard universal, high-speed or for motor drills. The drill can be increased by 30 cm with an extension. You can purchase a Mora 21141 22 mm adapter for upgrading to a motor drill.

The screw color is white. The color of the handles is light green.

Ice screws Mora

The manufacturer is based in Sweden and is the most popular among other foreign suppliers of this tool. The design of most models uses spherical blades that do an excellent job of cutting ice of any composition. Let's highlight some of them:

  1. Expert Pro - resembles the classic model, but has a number of improvements. Screw diameter – 110, 130, 150 and 200 mm to choose from. This version of the ice drill will be effective in any conditions, will not fail in difficult situations and will last for many years. The handle is foldable with a retractable system that allows you to increase the height. The auger can be used with an electric screwdriver.
  2. Ice Arctic – extended auger for thick ice. In addition, there is the possibility of installing an additional extension, which ensures successful drilling even with ice thickness of 2 meters. Diameter 110, 130 and 150 mm to choose from.
  3. Ice Micro is a small tool that can be easily used even by women and children. The handle is telescopic and has 4 positions, so everyone can set the height to their height. Available in all popular screw diameters.
  4. Nova System is the leader in the rating of ice drills from this manufacturer, available in diameters of 110, 130 and 160 mm. Any variation requires the installation of an additional extension 30 cm long. The model comes with improved spherical-type knives, which have a complex bend and a corresponding sharpening angle of the edges. The cutting head is made from an incredibly durable composite type material. Additionally, there is a universal, high-speed and cutting head for gasoline or electric drive. The handle folds with a TwinLock connection and is covered with reflective material for easy identification in the dark.

Ice screws Rapala

Unlike the previous manufacturer, removable cutting heads are used, not knives. The advantage is increased productivity, but the disadvantage is high cost. Self-sharpening will be impossible for most fishermen. The diameter of the screws varies between 110-180 mm. For transportation, the ice auger is folded in half or bent only in the handle area.

Ice screws Heinola

In the rating of ice drills, this Finnish manufacturer stands out for the presence of non-replaceable blades on the tool. Thanks to the unique design, drilling holes requires virtually no physical effort. The price is comparable to models from Mora. Let's look at two popular series of these ice screws:

  1. Easy Run – models with removable spherical knives, a telescopic handle, fixed in four positions. Available in all popular diameters. The EasyRunLong model has an extended handle and auger, which allows you to drill through ice up to 1.5 meters thick.
  2. SpeedRun models offer incredibly high performance, making them the fastest on the market. This effect is achieved thanks to the special design of the blades, the edges of which are coated with stainless welding wire.

The production was launched back in the days of the USSR; accordingly, the model is distinguished by its simplicity and the ability to be serviced at home. Straight knives are used, which dull quickly enough - fortunately, they can be sharpened using the appropriate tool. The diameter of the auger is 130 mm, the maximum depth of water is 80 cm. The handles are plastic and fit comfortably in the hand, but can crack in severe frost.

The Mora Ice Easy ice auger has a fairly simple design; its appearance can be compared with our two-handed models. In working conditions, it can handle even wet ice thanks to its advanced flat knives with an arched edge.

The recommendations for the use of this product describe the advisability of placing special supports under the knives if the work involves dry and hard ice. Such pads can increase both the angle and speed of drilling. This model is available in the following sizes: with auger 125, 150 and 175 mm. The working thickness of the ice is 0.87 cm. Standard color of the tool: blue.

The Expert pro model is a modernized version of the well-known, but now outdated Expert tool.

The main feature of this model:

  • equipped with spherical knives with a straight cutting edge;
  • telescopic extension (working depth extends to 1.3 m);
  • gradual increase in drilling depth eliminates the need to kneel while drilling;
  • used when drilling ice of various consistencies;
  • the auger of the tool can be adapted for drilling ice in combination with a cordless screwdriver; Mora 210141 is suitable as an adapter;
  • screw variations: 110, 130, 150 and 200 mm;
  • base color: green.

The Mora Ice pro ice drill is equipped with an innovative folding system, which greatly simplifies the process of storing and transporting the tool. Thanks to the retractable handle, an angler can easily and quickly not only increase the length of the tool to suit his height, but also adjust to the desired ice thickness. This is ideal for tall and short users.

The Mora Ice Micro ice drill is incredibly light and easy to use, and due to its compactness it can even be transported in a backpack. The user of this instrument will never have problems selecting a case. The folded product is a little more than half a meter in length, the minimum drilling length is 0.98 m, and the maximum is about 1.4 m. Auger diameters: 110,130, 150 and 200 mm. Tool color: red.

The Mora Ice Arctic ice drill was developed and adapted for use in northern latitudes with fairly thick ice.

The tool is equipped with appropriate attachments and extensions, allowing you to quickly and efficiently drill through ice with a thickness of 1.55 m.

Possible hole diameters: 110, 130, 150 mm. The standard color of the Mora Ice Arctic fishing tool is yellow.

Ice auger Mora Nova System is the latest development from Mora. The tool is lightweight, which was achieved through the use of thinner metal in production. Such innovations did not in any way worsen the performance characteristics of the ice drill. And one more feature of this product: the lower part of the tool can be used with a gasoline engine. Available in diameters 110, 130 and 160 mm. The standard color of the Mora Nova System product is white with prominent yellow handles.

Battery ice auger

The Is-Man cordless ice drill is easy to start. The housing, inside which the battery and motor are located, is securely attached directly to the drill using a trigger latch, and by pressing a button on the handle the tool is brought into working condition. Thanks to its own weight, the drill deftly plunges into the ice; there is no need to make excessive efforts (pressure).

Advantages of a battery-powered ice auger:

  • does not make loud sounds during operation;
  • no characteristic odor;
  • easy to operate and easy to maintain (charging batteries, replacing cutting knives);
  • the auger rotates in both directions;
  • the sixteen-inch model is equipped with an additional guide cutter, which is good for cutting large holes;
  • one charge can drill 25-50 holes.

Maximum thickness of passable ice

This parameter is relevant not only in northern regions with severe ice freezing, but also in the middle zone at the end of winter.

In the standard version, ice drills allow drilling ice up to 1.0 - 1.25 m. On request, some domestic manufacturers (for example, Turbo-Start LLC) supply various inserts and auger extensions. Among the imported ones, we can name Swedish models that drill ice up to 1.3 m (Folding) and 1.6 m (Royal Viking).

How to sharpen spherical knives

Absolutely all fishermen who use ice drills with spherical knives of this brand say that such blades are very difficult to sharpen at home.

This changes the working capabilities of the tool. This can be achieved by installing different washers or spacers under the blades. But if the knives are dull, then no tricks will help you drill through the ice without problems.

The easiest way to keep your tools in order is to constantly update your knives. But since their cost reaches 40% of the cost of the entire drill, many try to sharpen the blades themselves. The problem is that spherical knives require a curved surface in addition to fine sandpaper. Often a jar is used for this.

But professional fishermen offer the following method of sharpening spherical knives.

  • Using the Efim sharpening machine, sharpen the blade to the factory angle (plus 1-2 degrees).
  • To do this, use a narrow diamond, half-inch Boride abrasive stones, and rounded stones.
  • Remove the 5 micron burr by hand on the stone, keeping the blade almost parallel to the stone while working through the grain.
  • Go through the lead again, ending at 10 microns.
  • Remove the burr from the reverse side with a thin stone.
  • Correct sharpening is checked by cutting newsprint. The newspaper should be cut, not torn.

The rules for safe operation (general instructions for ice screws) will be useful for beginners who like ice fishing.

  • To avoid losing the factory settings, do not reinstall the knives immediately after purchase.
  • After drilling, the drill is screwed into the ice in a vertical position, this will remove water from the blades.
  • It is not recommended to knock ice off the auger.
  • Attempts to clean the knives by hitting the ice lead to their deformation.
  • Drilling holes near the shore or near the bottom will lead to loss of cutting properties of the blades. A spare set of blades will save the situation.
  • When transporting, a cover is placed on each knife.
  • Blades are replaced according to the rules for working with cutting tools.
  • To ensure that the ice drill is truly safe, you should not buy “non-original” blades, check certificates when purchasing and beware of unscrupulous suppliers.

Every amateur and professional has their favorite tools, devices, fixtures, and equipment. Many people are afraid that over time they will not be able to find spare parts for their drills. But winter fishermen note with surprise and pleasure that the Mora company, caring about its customers and its name, produces knives even for those drills that were discontinued in the 90s of the last century.

For a detailed review of the MORA ICE EASY 150mm ice drill, watch the following video.

Let's block ads! (Why?)

Main components of the ice drill

When drilling holes, all nodes experience certain loads, but some nodes are loaded the most. First of all, these are the knives or cutting head. The mechanism for connecting the parts of the ice auger (folding unit) also experiences heavy loads.

Knives are flat and spherical. The advantage of spherical knives is their smooth running when drilling, which ensures less noisy operation. In addition, spherical knives are not afraid of wet ice. And one more advantage: they make it easier to drill out old holes. Spherical knives are used by manufacturers, for example, of Swedish ice drills Mora Eriksson, Expert, Viking and Ice series. Finnish Rapala ice drills do not have knives, but a removable spherical cutting head, but the essence is the same.

ice screw with flat blades ice drill with spherical blades

And the advantages of flat knives include easier sharpening.

Flat knives differ in the shape of the blades. They can be straight, stepped, jagged, or rounded.

Flat knives are used in domestic ice drills, and spherical ones are used mainly in imported ones. But not all imported ice screws have spherical blades. There are models with flat blades, for example the Swedish MORA Ice Spiralen ice screws.

flat knives cutting head
  • low price;
  • ease of replacement;
  • possibility of self-sharpening;
  • small size spare kit.
  • Disadvantages include frequent chipping of corners and insufficiently reliable fastening of knives. During operation, the standard fastening screws are constantly unscrewed due to vibration and require tightening. Anglers are forced to replace standard screws with longer ones in order to lock them with nuts.

    By the way, spare knives for ice screws are often made from unknown, unhardened blades, which is not such a rarity among them. These knives take very little time to drill. And they are often sharpened incorrectly.

    To summarize, it should be noted that today spherical knife drills are the most effective. They cut quite well, and most importantly, they do not jam either on wet ice or when drilling out old holes.

    Ice auger

    This is the weak point of almost all domestic ice drills. The fact is that it is welded to the axle not along its entire length, but at individual points. Because of this, the screw belt often separates from the axis. Another disadvantage of this technology is the loud noise when drilling. Swedish Mora Eriksson ice drills also have spot welding, but its quality is higher. For example, a Rapala ice auger has a fully welded auger.

    Connections of ice auger parts

    This unit is called differently, and it is designed differently from different manufacturers. Some call it “axial lock”, others call it “folding system”. Connecting units are foldable, removable and telescopic.

    telescopic connection folding connection

    Telescopic ones allow you to adjust the height of the ice auger. The most common units are folding ones. The simpler the connecting node is, the more reliable it is. The quality of the steel from which the connecting unit is made also matters.

    Most ice screws are made of two parts, so they have one axial lock. But there are ice augers consisting of three parts and, accordingly, with two axial locks (ice auger RAPALA UR 3-115-1000).

    Handles

    In modern ice augers, both handles are spaced apart in relation to the axis of the ice auger. You need to drill with such ice drills with both hands at the same time, which is somewhat easier than with one, because... the load is distributed more evenly.

    When choosing an ice drill, pay attention to the material from which the handles are made. It should not crack upon impact. The handles of modern ice augers are more reliable than old ones because... They are made from hard rubber. In terms of tactile sensations, they are “warmer”, reminiscent of microporous rubber. In addition, the handle must be grippy. At the bottom of such a handle there should be a restrictive collar that does not allow the hand to slide down while drilling.

    Ice auger coating

    Not only the resistance of the metal to corrosion, but also the degree of freezing of ice chips depends on the quality of the coating. The smoother the coating, the less freezing.

Sharpening knives by hand

This sharpening is not so difficult, for this we need the following:

  • Ice ax sharpening device Carborundum is a special fine-grained sharpening stone.
  • Glass of water.
  • Sheet of rubber.

First, take a good look at the blade; if strong chips of the metal are visible, you will first have to remove several layers to level it. Sharpening is carried out in the following order:

Place the whetstone on the rubber for better stability. Then take the blade and moisten it with water, then you need to start processing from the large edge.

The sharpening angle of the ice ax knives should be the same at which the factory sharpening was carried out. After every 10-15 movements, it is necessary to check the plane of sharpening of the blade.

To make your knives sharper, use a stone with an even finer grain. If you are a person who loves everything perfect, then you can sharpen your knife to a mirror sharpness. To do this you will need glass and goyim paste; it can be purchased at any hardware store.

Sharpening knives by hand

Not all of our ancestors sharpened the knives of their ice drills on grinding machines. The majority of them did this work manually.

Today, if you have free time and the desire, you can sharpen without looking up from the TV.

To successfully sharpen ice drill knives with your own hands, you need to prepare such simple materials as:

  • whetstone (carborundum) with medium and fine grain;
  • rubber sheet;
  • glass of water.

Before starting work, it is necessary to assess the condition of the cutting edge of the knife. If there are chips in the tip or blade, then first of all you will have to remove a certain layer of steel.

  1. In this case, an abrasive stone with a medium grain is placed on the rubber. The knife is wetted in water and the largest edge is processed first. Sharpening should be done in a circular motion with light, even pressure of the blade to the surface of the stone. Humidification allows you to quickly obtain an abrasive paste at the steel-stone interface, which will effectively remove the metal layer. Usually 10-15 movements are enough to correct the plane of the knife.
  2. At the second stage, the knife is positioned with the blade to the block at the same angle at which the factory sharpening was made. It is better to hold the knife with both hands, pressing the blade to the surface of the abrasive. Measured circular movements are made again. After 10 laps it is necessary to perform a sharpening check.
  3. When the chips are removed from the cutting edge, you can bring the surface of the knife to perfect sharpness on a fine abrasive stone. The sequence of actions is the same as when processing on a medium-grained bar.
  4. Particularly fastidious people who like to do everything with high quality can make the final finishing touches using glass and GOI paste.

Morakniv steel sharpening

Be careful Every time you use your knife, the blade will wear out. It depends on what you are cutting and how you work with the knife. But basically what happens is that the cutting edge bends in one direction or another. When you sharpen a knife, you want to realign the cutting edge so that it is straight and therefore as sharp as possible. Sharpening stones and sharpening stones are excellent tools for re-sharpening knives. Today there is a very large selection of sharpening tools made of different materials and different thicknesses. Most users agree that using mechanical and electric sharpeners is more effective. The exception remains the fishing industry, where traditionally, due to the inaccessibility of mechanical devices, they use musat and stones. When mastering the art of sharpening, the first step is to understand the effect of mousse on the blade. For good sharpening, using a polished steel rod or a fine abrasive rod, the job of the rod is to push back pieces of the edge that have moved to the side when in contact with harder materials. Imagine what a knife blade looks like under high magnification, it has a smooth, even, sharp edge... and then imagine how rough handling of the blade, such as against rough steel, can result in abrasion and loose particles of steel (known as burrs). However, if you use a polished honing steel, the edge can be smoothed out, resulting in a smooth, sharp edge again. The most important thing when using a sharpening rod is the angle of the knife to the steel. You need to keep the angle of the knife to the sharpener at the same value and at the same time sharpen from the handle to the tip of the blade. In case of severe damage to the edge of the blade, it is necessary to increase the pressure on the blade with a sharpener and gradually reduce it to a light touch, like a feather, at the final stage. The main thing is smoothness and precision of movements, eliminating jerking and impact loads. The force of pressure and the frequency of movements are not the main thing - the most important thing is to control the maintenance of the sharpening angle in order to avoid rounding of the cutting edge of the blade. Sharpening should take place on a sharpener or moussat - as if you were performing a cutting action with a knife on a sharpener. Alternate sharpening on both sides of the edge of the knife blade, and then check the sharpness of the knife. Monitor sharpening visually and auditorily - your eyes allow you to control the position of the knife at the correct angle, and your ears determine the smoothness of the sharpening surface of the blade. When the edge of the knife blade becomes smooth and sharp, the sharpening noise decreases. Remember that sharpening a knife is absolutely not a test of speed. Using calm and controlled movements is the basis for learning how to properly sharpen a knife. There is no magnetic effect on the edge or any other magical force that affects the result. The purpose of magnetism in a sharpener is to collect loose particles at the top so that they do not damage the edge during sharpening. With practice and guidance, you will soon be able to sharpen your knife so that it is very sharp again.
