Features of fishing with egg bait

Catching perch in winter with eggs

Despite the fact that in our modern fishing world such words as feeder fishing, trolling, jig have become firmly established in the everyday life of anglers, we should not forget traditional fishing methods before they completely fade into the background and fall into oblivion. Fishing for perch in winter using eggs is not inferior in its catchability to many modern types of fishing, despite its venerable “age”. The bait got its name due to its resemblance to a chicken egg (although the shapes may be different).

What is an artificial bait egg?

As mentioned above, the standard shape of the bait resembles the shape of a slightly elongated chicken egg. Bullet-shaped eggs are also found.

The colors of the bait can vary from black to bright yellow, depending on the personal taste of the angler. But it is recommended to use dark colors on a light day, and lighter colors on a dark day. Eggs in yellow and black colors with burgundy beads performed well.

Eggs for perch

As a rule, eggs for perch are made of lead. But some fishermen use more expensive and heavier tungsten for production. This is not entirely advisable, since it is necessary for the bait to be more voluminous and better attract the attention of the fish, which a miniature tungsten bait cannot do.

To make the bait you will need the egg shape itself, several beads, and hooks with a long shank. The assembled tackle is tied to a fishing line or a carabiner is used. There is an opinion that the carabiner slightly disrupts the action of the bait, so it is preferable to tie the tackle directly to the fishing line.

Balda or eggs for perch

My first acquaintance with it took place more than 5 years ago, when I accidentally “spied” one of the fishermen catching a carp on “eggs” (later it turned out that the carp weighed about 5 kg.) About five minutes later, at the same tackle, but another fisherman caught a kilogram bream. . .

Sheer sparkle! It seems to many fishermen that there is some great mystery behind this phrase and that only particularly enlightened “gurus” of the fishing world fish in this way. But in life, as often happens, everything is actually much simpler, and you just need to not be lazy and try. So... I want to tell you about a very simple but catchy tackle for vertical trolling, which is great for catching perch, carp, bream, pike perch and pike. In our area (Vinnytsia region), fishermen call this spoon nothing other than “eggs.” My first acquaintance with it took place more than 5 years ago, when I accidentally “spied” one of the fishermen fishing for carp on “eggs” (later it turned out that the carp weighed about 5 kg.) About five minutes later, using the same tackle, but by a different fisherman, a kilogram bream was caught. Soon after this, my first fish caught on the bulldozer was a 1.5 kg pike. But this is the exception rather than the rule; perch is more often caught in the catch.

“Eggs” are easy to make at home. To do this, you need to make a shape in damp sand with a sharpened pencil. Molten lead is poured into a mold 20-25 mm deep. The frozen workpiece is processed with a file. Then we make a hole with a needle, paint the top black or brown, and the bottom red. A fishing line with a diameter of 0.20-0.25 mm and a length of about 10 cm is passed through the hole. We put two hooks No. 4-5 on the two ends of the fishing line and tie the fishing line. Balda or eggs for perch are ready.

Fishing method: The tackle or eggs are lowered into the water to the bottom, then raised, tugging (playing) with the end of the rod 20-30 cm from the bottom, and then sharply lowering the rod to allow it to fall freely to the bottom. Falling to the bottom, the devil is picked up from the bottom by a mule, which attracts perch very well. The fish will definitely be tempted and you will not be left without a catch.

Egg fishing technique

The technique of catching perch with eggs is quite simple, even primitive.

It uses a regular fishing rod with a reel, a fishing line with a diameter of 0.1 to 0.25 mm, this does not greatly affect the bite.

The fishing itself is done vertically. The tackle is lowered into promising places along the shore and the bait game begins. To do this, the bait is lowered to the bottom, then with a quick movement it rises to 25–45 cm and remains there for several seconds until it stops completely, then it is lowered to the bottom again. All actions with bait are repeated in one hole 8–10 times. If there is no bite, then the fishing location changes, a new playing technique is tried, for example, with an increase in pause at the top point.

Fishing with eggs is one of the most productive in different seasons; its simplicity is captivating and makes it especially successful among equals. We advise you to try this type of fishing and see for yourself.

Catching fish with eggs

We are all familiar with such newfangled words as feeder fishing, jig and trolling. At the same time, some traditional methods of fishing are gradually forgotten and fade into the background, or even fall into oblivion. Although some baits, despite their venerable age, are not inferior in their catchability to many know-how of the 21st century. I can wholeheartedly include eggs as such bait. This artificial bait most likely got its name because of its shape, which resembles a chicken egg (although there are eggs that do not look like eggs at all - pardon the pun).

What kind of egg bait?

As we have already mentioned, the classic shape of eggs resembles a chicken egg, albeit a little elongated. Although there are many other varieties - for example, there are eggs in the shape of a bullet (or actually made from a bullet?).

The color of eggs can be very different - from bright yellow to black. This, of course, depends on the personal preferences of the angler and the specific fishing conditions. If you fish in a place with a light bottom, use a darker color, and with a dark bottom, use a lighter color. I personally prefer the combination of yellow and black with red beads.

Lead is usually used to cook eggs. Some use heavier (and more expensive) metals, such as tungsten, but I personally think the use of tungsten eggs is inappropriate, since the miniature size of the bait, which is a trump card in winter fishing, plays a more negative than positive role when fishing with eggs - after all, we you want the eggs to be as visible as possible in the water.

As you can see in the photos, to make eggs you need only 3 things: 1) the egg itself; 2) 4-6 beads; 3) 2 hooks with a long shank. The assembled tackle can be tied directly to the fishing line or using a carabiner. I tie directly on the pond, but this, of course, is a matter of taste. It seems to me that the carabiner, although insignificantly, “thwarts” the action of the bait.

Where can you buy eggs?

You can buy this bait in many fishing stores. There is also a huge selection of eggs in Bukhara. And if it so happens that there is nowhere to buy eggs, then you can easily melt them yourself from lead and paint them in any color you like. This is exactly what most fishermen from rural areas do, and I must note that their eggs are in no way inferior in quality to store-bought counterparts.

What fish are caught with eggs?

By and large, all our predatory fish bite well on this bait. Mostly perch is caught using eggs; pike perch and pike, sometimes ruff, also bite well on them. I have also seen more than once how bream are successfully caught using eggs from a boat in the pits.

As for me, I prefer to catch perch with eggs. Catching perch with eggs can be very effective, especially in the fall, when perch begin to flock together and walk along the shore in search of food. Catching perch with eggs begins around the end of September, when the water has cooled sufficiently and cleared, and continues until the freeze-up.

Egging season

In general, in my opinion, the most successful fishing with eggs occurs in the middle of autumn and spring. In summer, due to insufficient water transparency, fishing with eggs is rarely successful. In winter, it bites much better on baited and baitless jigs. Although sometimes during thaws there is a good bite of perch on eggs, so it doesn’t hurt to have a few eggs in your winter fishing box.

Egg fishing technique

The technique of catching fish with eggs is very simple. There is no need for special skill here and anyone can learn it in just a couple of hours of fishing. Many would call it primitive. Nevertheless, I consider it necessary to briefly describe it.

To catch perch with eggs, I use a 4-meter fast-action match rod. It is advisable to have a small reel, since it is often necessary to keep the line release shorter than the length of the rod. You don’t have to worry too much about the diameter of the fishing line - as practice has shown, it doesn’t matter if the fishing line has a diameter of 0.1 or 0.25 mm.

Fishing with eggs is carried out vertically. Moving along the shore, I lower the tackle into promising places and start the game. First, I lower the eggs to the bottom, then with a sharp movement of my hand I lift them up 20-40 centimeters. The hand freezes in the upper position for a few seconds until the bait stops completely, after which the eggs sink to the bottom again. This is the full cycle of working with eggs. If after 10 repetitions there is no bite, you need to change the fishing location or try a different playing technique, for example, use a longer delay at the top point. This often helps when catching pike perch.

In my opinion, egg fishing is one of the most productive in the autumn. And if you add to this the simplicity of this fishing, then it will probably have no equal among others. Try fishing with eggs and you will see for yourself.

Fishing for perch in winter

It is generally accepted that fishing for perch on a bullhead is an effective way of winter fishing for striped robber. In some regions, such tackle is called an “egg”. Some fishermen have heard about this homemade product, but do not use it. Meanwhile, the design of the bait is simple, the game and wiring are also simple. A beginner can master this tackle, and even more so an experienced winter fisherman.

Fishing for perch with a spinner in winter brings success when other baits are silent. At the same time, you cannot rely only on such a tyrant - it is better to use the bulldozer in combination with jigs or lures, selecting a working option for the fish in the specific conditions of the reservoir.

Fishing tactics

There are no special tactics for winter fishing for perch on the bald. General principles and approaches to searching for striped predators in winter are used. The predator's stopping places depend on the winter period and the conditions of the reservoir. Periods of activity are replaced by a passive state. The general rule is an active search, drilling holes at a distance of 10-15 meters, and when a cool place is found, more frequent drilling of the water area. Read more about tactics for finding winter perch in the article:

You can catch perch on a balda in winter during all periods of freezing. In terms of the first and last ice, this decoy is completely unrivaled. Perch in the middle of nowhere also responds well to this bait. At this time, the number of bites increases significantly if you place a provocateur fly 20 centimeters higher (preferably in a sliding version).

An important criterion for the success of catching fish with eggs is the correct choice of place. The main attracting factor is the rise of a cloud of turbidity when tapping on the bottom. This attracts striped fish from afar. Therefore, a soft bottom with sediment, sand, and clay is suitable for fishing with a cannon. On a hard rocky bottom, this bait often does not work for perch, but in such places, tapping attracts burbot.

Sometimes the predator takes it in the water column. A type of bait is the Ural bully. This is a regular vertical spoon, equipped with free-moving hooks in the upper part.

Tackle components

“Egg” fishing gear consists of a special fishing rod; coils (it can be anything); a device that gives a signal during a bite; cord connecting the tackle to the bit; fishing line with marys; leashes with hooks; feeder with complementary foods; actually “eggs”; additional thread; bead and swivel.

Each device has its own requirements. For example, the rod should not exceed a meter, since excessive length can cause certain difficulties when catching fish.

The diameter of the main cord should not exceed 0.36 millimeters. A fishing line with hooks no thicker than 0.26 millimeters.

The wires should have a length of no more than 35 cm, a diameter of up to 0.15 millimeters, and there should be no more than 6 of them. The feeding thread should not be very thin, barely noticeable.

How to make a balda for catching perch

A balda for catching perch in winter can be made simply and quickly with your own hands. Once the components (weights, hooks with decorations) are ready, you can literally assemble it on your knees. Article about making gear:

There are a huge variety of these deceptions. Each fisherman makes his own adjustments, looking for the most catchy option. This bait is used in winter not only for perch. Pike-perch responds well to large, heavy baits; microbait is useful for catching roach, bream and other whitefish. The equipment installed on the catch-up bulldozers is completely varied - it is more important to observe the principle of snag itself. Different weights, body sizes and shapes, decorations on hooks, beads on the fishing line between hooks and sinkers - all this is selected individually and experimentally.

In fishing stores

Nowadays Croatian eggs can be found in almost any fishing store at prices of 200-300 rubles. More often these are standard Chinese with a body of 5.5 cm, weighing about 13 grams and a hook with a long shank. These are various replicas from Herman, Luhaiser, Kosadak, Rosy Dawn and other Chinese, both in popper and glider versions.

How to catch perch in winter on Baldu

The technique of fishing with a bulldozer is based on the design features of the bait. This is a bottom bait. The main movement is setting the sinker to the bottom, then breaking away from it and falling back. When the body of the bait hits the bottom, a cloud of turbidity rises. This is the first attraction factor. When falling, a heavy sinker ends up at the bottom earlier (due to mass). Loosely attached hooks with decorations sliding down the line after this are a provoking factor. They are the point of attack. In addition, the additional provocateur at the top activates the predator’s food competition mode.

This is the main way to play - toss and release. In this case, after the fall, the line should be taut and the sinker should be at the bottom. Along the stretched line, the hooks are lowered to the lowest point. At this moment you need to wait for a bite - it manifests itself in a rise or trembling of the nod. Sometimes there are distinct impacts. The amplitude and speed of the strokes are selected experimentally.

Wiring technique

The basis of placing a Croatian egg on a pike is rhythm, monotony, and not ragged chaos. Therefore, you need to not just tug at the windows, but twitch with a certain step, as far as the thickets allow. We strive to drive the egg like a walker, only with less amplitude.

If a pike chases the bait and does not take it, you cannot stop the retrieve or make chaotic jerks on emotions, change the speed, otherwise in 90% of cases the predator will lose interest and leave. We continue the same rhythm until the end. The popper egg also squishes. If there is no more space, and the bait is about to hit the shore, we turn the rod left or right along the shore and continue jerking. The bite may occur under your feet.

We also check the uniformity or stop and go - sometimes the toothy one reacts precisely to such wiring. In remote places, where there are single small windows of clean water among the water lilies, we carefully stretch the bait directly over the water lilies, dragging them into these gaps. When an egg plops into the window, we are in no hurry to pull it out. We are waiting for the water to calm down. Then you can tug and shake a little so that it doesn’t jump out onto the water lilies on the other side of the window again.

Features and secrets

  1. You can catch a perch on a balda in other ways of playing. If the fish does not take the classic movements, then we try to move the hooks (by carefully tensioning and loosening the fishing line, as well as in different directions), without lifting the sinker from the bottom. This technique works well for passive fish in the dead of winter.
  2. In addition, we use various variants of jig play - trembling at the bottom, jerky micro-lifts, slow even rises and drops with trembling. If there is a perch under the hole, then after selecting the right game, you can get the whole flock out from under the ice.
  3. A noise bait works well for an active predator. To make it, a cavity is cut out in the body of the sinker and filled with balls (bearings), then sealed. When falling and shaking, such a bait will make noise and tapping noises, which attract the striped robber.

Fishing for perch in winter (video):

Perch fishing in winter

Perch fishing in winter begins almost immediately after ice appears on the pond. The best time for catching perch in winter is the first 2-3 weeks after the ice is installed, as well as during the pre-spawning feast (actually in the spring), when the fish are especially actively trying to gain strength after a harsh winter. Perch prefers calm, windless weather, with slight steady frost. The bite may fluctuate throughout the day. On most rivers, perch bites better in the morning, with slight frost (not lower than 15-20 ° C) and stable atmospheric pressure. Sometimes the bite begins not in the morning, but in the afternoon or in the evening. Therefore, if you have spent daylight hours at the hole, you should not leave on the eve of twilight. In the evening, the perch bite can be fantastic, although usually such an evening fish outing does not last very long.

For the spinner

So, having examined the main features of using baits, now let’s look at catching perch with them at different times of the winter season. And let’s summarize the existing experience.

1. On the first ice, perch can be caught perfectly with a jig, but it can also be caught with a spoon, and it’s large.

With active fish, preferences shift towards spinners. Because fishing speed is often important, and the lure always catches larger fish, which are now active and bite confidently. There is no point in hunting small fish when, with masterful use of a spoon, you can catch humpback whales.

The spoon also attracts predators from afar. It happens that they don’t bite on the jig, but if you flash a long line, the predator approaches the hole and starts taking both the lure and the jig.

It takes about a minute to tease the perch with a jig before the bite begins. With a spinner, preparatory teasing can last up to 10 minutes, after which a steady bite begins. Rather, this happens because the perch gets used to the bait for some time, watches it, but does not dare to take it.

But as soon as the first fish grabs the spoon, other stripers follow its example, landing on the spoon non-stop. In this regard, a jig is a less alarming object, and you can start fishing with it almost immediately.

2. In the wilderness, the activity of perch is extremely variable. In small, low-flowing reservoirs, it is practically not caught at this time. In other places, the bite is highly dependent on the weather.

Using a jig, you can count on one or another catch almost everywhere. But the spinner should only be used on very large reservoirs and rivers with significant depths. So the choice of bait at this time very much depends on the fishing location.

3. On the last ice, the perch usually loses its former aggressiveness and remains somewhat sluggish. Almost everyone refuses to take a spinner, but the pre-spring bite of perch on a jig is very active. Perhaps this phenomenon is due to the fact that at this time the usual diet of perch changes.

Small fish, sensing melt waters, become active and evasive, and a perch full of caviar is no longer the same hunter. But all the small living creatures of the reservoirs wake up, on which all the fish, including perch, actively feed. Therefore, the jig on most reservoirs in the spring becomes out of competition.

To summarize, we can say that with a jig, the angler will not be left without catches in any case. And the lure requires significant predator activity. But it should be borne in mind that for many anglers, the size of the fish is the main priority.

To the balancer

The gear for catching perch with a balance beam is as follows: a light and reliable winter fishing rod, a silicone nod, monofilament fishing line and a balance beam. To catch perch, you need to use small balancers; it is better to choose their size from 3 to 5 cm. Nods can be used from other materials, the main thing is that they are of the required length and very sensitive. As for the body length and shape of the balancer, you need to constantly experiment and have several different baits in your arsenal. Of the colors, natural colors, such as perch, are best.

It is better to attach the balancer to the main line through a fastener so that the line does not fray. The technique of playing with a balancer is very simple - successive swings of the rod, with short pauses, starting from touching the bottom to the top level of the hole. Pauses between strokes can be made both short and long. After all, very often the perch attacks the bait precisely at the moment of pause.

Catching perch in winter. KVH

I've been waiting for him for a long time! The start of the late winter was not convincing. Then all the frosts were endured in warmer climes. Later, two programs were filmed. But the ice on the river was already critical, and we cannot neglect the safety of the film crew. We fishermen are just crazy fans and we can be forgiven. But on television, although people are obsessed with their work, safety comes first! And therefore, two winter episodes of the program “fishing in old school style” had to be filmed in closed reservoirs. And here, finally, is a living reservoir! Kyiv!
