Chub and features of its fishing in summer

If we talk about the seasons, chub fishing in the summer is rightfully considered the most productive. This can be explained by the fact that in addition to small fish, the chub’s diet includes numerous insects, which are in abundance during this warm period. Therefore, the fisherman has a good opportunity to experiment and return home with a good catch.

Pea - attachment for catching large chub

Peas - a bait for large chub
Preparation for such fishing begins at home. In my kitchen, I brew peas to such a consistency that they can be easily pierced with a hook and stick well to it. Peas will later be useful to us when fishing as bait, and we will add some of them to bait. When I go fishing for large chub, I take a large plastic bucket for preparing bait, a loaf of white bread and five equipped fishing rods.

Specifics of choosing bait for different fishing methods

Depending on the tackle used, the best baits for chub are:

  • float tackle: corn, peas, wheat grains, dough, bread crusts, worms;
  • bottom tackle: river crustacean, pieces of processed cheese, frogs, corn, peas, grasshopper, clam, white bread;
  • fly fishing: grasshopper, cockchafer, butterflies;
  • zherlitsy: bread, boiled potatoes, live bait;
  • spinning: black or red spinners;
  • bombard: artificial baits such as "fly", "gnat" and "bug".

Features of catching large chub

The large chub is a very strong fish, and therefore, in order not to lose my fishing rods, I make special holders at home. They are a piece of tube 25 cm long, the diameter of which is slightly larger than the diameter of the rod handle. I attach a piece of reinforcement 50 cm long to such a tube. When fishing, I stick the reinforcement vertically into the shore, and insert a rod into the tube. In this position, the fishing rod is securely fastened, and I am not afraid that a large chub will drag it along with it when it bites.

When fishing, I place fishing rods at a distance of 10-15 m from each other. In this position, the fishing rods will not confuse everything with each other when the fish bites. In addition, I am far from the fishing spot and do not scare the chub. When fishing, after mixing the bait, I begin installing the rods. After I installed all the fishing rods, my bait absorbed the moisture and became the desired consistency. I start putting bait in the feeders and throwing all the rods into the water.

I catch large chub with a feeder. On a fishing line with a diameter of 0.25 mm, I install a large, heavy feeder, from which there is a hook with bait on a long leash of one and a half meters. I put one large pea on the hook and cover it with a piece of white bread on top. I like to take a green pea, because I noticed that the chub takes it more readily.

Catching chub on a feeder

What do chub bite and catch in summer in July?

In July, the chub feeds most actively on rifts and places that are adjacent to them - potholes and pits before and after the ripples, shelter on the stream (stones, grass, thickets of cobwebs, so beloved by the big-headed ones), places in front of and behind the islands, which are often are formed in the area of rapids.

Spinning rod in hand

In general, chub fishing in July is not much different from July. But the details are there, and as you know, the devil lurks in the nickname...

It is worth considering that the predator gradually leaves the pits and begins to hunt more and more often in the rifts and areas near them. The food supply of the bighead also changes somewhat - the fry are larger, new insects and other living creatures appear.

The water is getting lighter, and therefore it is better to catch chub using their favorite matte colors of wobblers with bright splashes of red, yellow and white. Such baits are very clearly visible against the sky:

In general, the baits for spinning are the same as in June, only the emphasis is more on wobblers. Running minnows are very good at catching on twitch, you can use the same ones as in early summer, but in a larger size from 5 to 8 cm. Yo-Zury L-minnow, Zip Baits Rigge, CrackJack and other Japanese.

Turntables and oscillators also work, but, in our opinion and experience, for the most part they are worse than wobblers. But this is not a dogma; it can and should be questioned every time. An experimental fisherman is always in an advantageous position!

China is not suitable for fast water, such baits do not hold the stream, fall on their side and lose their play!

In the hands of a donk or feeder

At the height of summer, bottom fishing for chub is not in favor. Bream, silver bream, and roach are more often caught on the bottom. But you can try to catch chub using the following baits and baits.

  • bark beetle and its larvae;
  • shells;
  • filamentous algae;
  • snails;
  • tadpoles and frogs;
  • grasshoppers;
  • amphipods.

At the height of summer, chub are very willing to eat “thread” - filamentous algae, as this is the basis of its diet. But, in our opinion, if you are going to catch it with natural baits, then it is better to use the “thread” on a float rod and catch the predator in half the water (more on this below).

Doners and feeders should search for chub at this time near rifts, at river turns, on channel edges in the immediate vicinity of rapids.

Float rod in hand

In July, you can successfully continue to catch chub using a float rod. But you need to be even more careful, the water is clear and getting lower, and the fish are even more careful.

The nozzles are the same as for the donkey. Of particular interest are filamentous algae, which are not suitable for bottom fishing because they do not stick well to the hook and fall off when casting.

A bunch of filamentous algae is taken directly under water, clenched in a fist and raised to the surface. The water is squeezed out and a thin rope of thread is obtained. It curls, like hair, into one string. Then it is wrapped with gentle movements around the shank of the hook. Our hero really loves this dish in the summer.

At this time, the bite of the redfin and big-headed mischievous fish is very strong and swift - it hits impudently. You need to be prepared for any unfolding of events. This is especially true if fishing is done with animal baits - insects, caterpillars, grasshoppers.

Fly fishing in hands

There is no particular difference with fishing in June - only different flies are needed and the parking places change (about parking places above).

Good flies for July chub are in the form of grasshoppers, dragonflies, spiders and other insects that often find themselves on the surface of the river:

Silence is the key to success when catching large chub

To catch a large chub you must remain quiet. Therefore, having thrown all my fishing rods, I move 20 m away from them and set up my observation place. From this distance I can clearly see all my fishing rods, and I calmly watch them. The bite of a large chub is very noticeable; the tip of the rod bends and begins to twitch. When I get a bite, I quickly run up to the rod and start fishing. The chub is a very strong and strong fish, so fishing does not need to be forced. The rods must have a well-adjusted clutch, otherwise the chub will break the tackle.

If no bites occur within 25 minutes, then I go and re-cast all the rods again, since the feeders will already be empty and will not attract the chub. There is no need to recast more often because you will make unwanted noise and may scare away wary fish.

When fishing for large chub, there is a minimum of bites from small fish. During the entire fishing there will be one or several bites, but these will be trophy specimens. This type of fishing is suitable for patient anglers. But your patience will be rewarded with specimens of large chub, and the fishing will remain in your memory for a long time. If I fish in the spring, I release all the fish I catch back. I encourage you to do the same. Now you know how to catch a large chub. If you do everything correctly, as I wrote in this article, then you will definitely catch your trophy. Chub fishing is very interesting and requires certain knowledge of the habits of this fish. By following the tips I've given you, you can enjoy catching big chub.

Best time to fish

The highest fishing efficiency occurs in the summer. But, given that during different periods of even the warm season, fish activity is very different, in order to successfully catch chub, the easiest way is to use a biting calendar.

MonthsPresence/absence of biteTackle
December January Februaryweak no nofly fishing, bottom tackle not caught not caught
March April Maybad bad good dayfly fishing, float fly fishing, float fly fishing, float, spinning
June July Augustgood during the day good at night good during the dayfly fishing, float fishing, spinning, bottom tackle

Catching chub with a spinning rod

When catching chub with a spinning rod in the spring, it is recommended to use ultralight tackle. Spinning rod with 3-15 grams of dough, fast blank action, rod length 2.1-2.4 meters.

Spinning reel 1500-2000 according to Shimano classification.

For spring chub fishing, you will need to purchase spinners, spoons and wobblers.

The shape of the latter may be similar to a small roach/minnow. The bait should be painted in a dark color and not make unnecessary noise, since the spring smut is very shy and will bypass noisy wobblers.

The wiring must be uniform. The pauses are short. Bites most often occur when the wobbler stops.

If you want to use turntables, you should give preference to long-type runners. Colors: red with black, yellow with red, white with yellow.

Advice! When searching for promising places, do not forget about areas where tree branches hang over the water. This is especially true during the flight of cockchafers and other insects.

Features of catching chub in early spring in March

Arriving at a reservoir in early spring, you should position yourself next to a riffle. The depth of the holes at the bottom of the river in the chosen fishing location should reach 1.5 meters. During this period, small baits are used (2-6 grams).

Considering the fact that the chub is a cautious fish that reacts sharply to sounds, you should be quiet while fishing. When casting, take into account that the current carries the bait from the riffle into the hole. It is there that you can most often find fattening smut.

After the wobbler has drifted downstream to a promising fishing spot, they need to start playing in the stream, making pulls of varying strength using the tip of the blank.

Advice! In the first month of spring, it is best to offer the fish animal baits such as worms and bloodworms. That is, use bottom tackle, not spinning. If spinning tackle is your priority, then you can try to catch chub from the bottom using sinking wobblers, microjigs, and driven heavy spoons.

Features of fishing in April

Fishing for chub in April is not particularly different from fishing for a member of the carp family in early spring. The smut is not yet gathering in schools; individual individuals are gradually increasing their energy reserves and devoting most of their time to searching for food.

The only thing worth paying attention to is that closer to mid-April and early May, the chub rises closer to the surface and it is worth using wobblers and spinners that go closer to the surface.

Features of chub fishing in May

In May, the chub goes to spawn. At this time, you can fish throughout the day. First of all, you need to catch:

  • areas of a reservoir with hard soil;
  • stuck places;
  • holes and rifts.

During this period, you can use more massive turntables and wobblers. The smut is gaining activity and actively feeding. During casting, you will need to keep the bait in the middle water column.

During the flight of the cockchafer, you should give preference to wobblers made in the form factor of this insect.

Spring preferences

What the chub bites in the spring is easy to answer. For bait during the thaw in early spring at the first sun when using a fishing rod:

  • insects;
  • worms;
  • bread;
  • small crustaceans, frogs, bait fish.

If you manage to find the May beetle and caterpillars, it will be a real delicacy. In search of such a delicacy, the chub heads to the shore, where it is deep, but along which there are bushes and trees with branches hanging in them.

Another spring bait is crawling worms, which can be found along the road after rain. If small fish can peck at earthworms, then large specimens will definitely come after the crawling fish.

Already in May, you should prepare the May beetle, and closer to June, Colorado dung beetles will come up. It is better to remove the hard wings before landing on the hook. The point is inserted under the stomach and out through the back. If the beetles are small, you can plant several at a time.

By analogy with catfish, smut loves mole crickets, which are not uncommon in almost any garden. If the bottom is with shells, they were caught with barnacles, pearl barley, and mollusks (before baiting, it is better to dry it a little in the sun).

When insects fly, the chub comes out closer to the surface of the water, only moving to the bottom or closer to it closer to night.

About the chub

Content

The chub or, scientifically, Squalius cephalus is a large fish of the carp family. In the literature there are references to giants weighing up to two pounds, but the existence of such chubs was already in doubt during the time of Sabaneev. Today, a chub weighing more than two kilograms can well be considered a trophy, and its maximum weight reaches 5–6 kg. This strong and beautiful fish is most common in small and medium-sized rivers and is practically never found in reservoirs with stagnant water.

Lure for chub

The bait for this fish should consist only of those ingredients that the chub loves, otherwise the result will be zero. The task of bait is not to quickly attract fish, but to organize an interesting place where there is always an opportunity to profit. Therefore, it is undesirable to introduce strong-smelling additives into the composition. It is enough to cook some porridge.

You can lure a chub if you use the following ingredients:

  • boiled or steamed peas;
  • boiled corn;
  • makukha;
  • cake;
  • bread;
  • barley;
  • maggot;
  • bloodworm;
  • worms;
  • boiled porridges of various origins.
