Marauder 5-21
Initially, I was quite skeptical about the capabilities of this rod when I purchased it the winter before last, when it had just gone on sale, since at first I didn’t consider the Marauder to have a wide range of uses in my practice. So, spinning for a couple of serious fishing trips a year. Still, the test - 5-21 grams - would seem to be designed exactly for medium-sized wobblers. You can’t catch perch with children’s minnows, or pike with adults. Length 198 with a very bad structure does not encourage the use of long casts. And the ultra-light weight of the Marauder calls into question its crash characteristics, which are necessary for fishing in ultra-harsh conditions.
In general, at the beginning of last season it was intended for fishing from a boat or in a wade for pike and perch using a 7-11 cm wobbler in coastal areas with moderate vegetation. At the end of the current season, it became an almost universal spinning rod. Over two full seasons, the number of its uses reached several dozen and the Marauder became a leader among other rods if the object of fishing was primarily pike and large perch in still waters. It’s worth mentioning right away that there was never any doubt about the strength. “Tearing-lifting” properties are in harmony with structure and power.
The spinning rod performed excellently in fishing with a wobbler from 55 millimeters, at the lower limit of the test. Having a super fast action doesn't mean you can't throw anything. The rod has a thin, light tip that can be loaded normally when casting, and small minnows of 4-5 grams fly quite well from it. Naturally, there are no questions with wiring. They may arise when the question of casting no longer exists, that is, when we set the minnow gram to 15. But any 110-caliber wobbler I used did not raise the issue head-on - the spinning rod works well. And even the extra-deep versions of size 90 never raised any doubts about the correctness of the choice. But you won’t be able to catch fish all the time with just twitching; somewhere you need to adapt to changing conditions. And don’t carry with a purely twitching rod one that is more universal in length and action. Naturally you will use a compromise solution. And for me personally, Marauder has become the compromise that closes the topic of the associated use of, let’s say, less demanding lures with wobblers.
In the test that I have, the Marauder works well with medium and large turntables. Its length is an excellent assistant when fishing with super-porous “burdocks” up to number 6. I use standard pike spoons and non-hooking spoons for shore fishing, which, by the way, often require an ultra-fast rod for precise placement. Well, the jig is the second hidden aspect of the twitching fishing rod. Especially when it comes to fishing from a boat or animating baits that require active work with the rod. And here I am completely satisfied with everything. The high modulus of graphite allows the Marauder to be given a solid four in the jig category. I never take a special jig tool into the boat in the “medium” class if I have a Marauder with me.
Finally, I would like to mention such an important point in using a twitching spinning rod as ergonomics. Everyone, of course, has their hands cut differently, and my opinion will be subjective. But I find simply amazing the combination of a short blank, as lightweight as possible, with a short, spaced, warm handle with a rear clamping nut. I can fish with this spinning rod all day long. And every time I get ready to go fishing and take a red velvet weightless case, I only look forward to pleasure.
Marauder 662L
As such, fishing by twitching, i.e.
jerk wiring, in which a certain animation is given to the bait, found its popularity among us 5-6 years ago. Many people learned about intricate wiring with the appearance of the first video about twitching from Alexey Shanin, “Twitching minnow wobblers.” The eminent athlete, in fact, clearly explained and showed the technique of wiring famous brand wobblers. True, the main aspect remained in the shadows - the choice of the right rod necessary for guiding minnow wobblers with various form factors. Therefore, my developmental stage in twitching was based on my mistakes and their recognition, as well as in the search for a suitable rod. For example, for several seasons I preferred to give the bait short and aggressive movements, while my first twitching spinning rod “failed” the game of 90 mm wobblers, especially against the current. And although I caught pike, I experienced discomfort from the too soft tip, thick handle and uncomfortable reel seat. Since then, I have changed several spinning rods, after which I came to the conclusion that twitching gear is rather a rod with a narrow focus in its characteristics. And if so, then sometimes it’s not possible to pay an extra penny for it. By the time I bought a new spinning rod, I already had an exact idea of what I wanted from a new “tool” - a test weight of up to 14-16 grams with a length of no more than two meters, an ultra-fast action and some “thickness” coupled with a safety margin. These parameters include a large number of spinning rods from different manufacturers, but if you take away the inflated cost and large weight of the rod, it turns out that there are not so many options. It happened that a Korean Maximus with the alarming name Marauder 662L (Marauder) ended up in my hands. It’s hard to imagine what prompted manufacturers to call this a spinning rod positioned as a twitching rod, but you can’t fool your hand, and the first impressions were pleasant - the Marauder fit well in the hand and showed itself to be a durable rod when tested. Actually, what can you expect from the relatively budget Marauder series?
Firstly, the Maximus Marauder 662L, with its length of 198 cm and a test of 3-14 grams, turned out to be surprisingly very light - only 86 grams, which is important in twitching; after all, the wrists get tired after long hours of active twitching. In practice, it turned out that it is best to use this model with reels whose spool size does not exceed 2000 according to the Daiwa classification and the cord no more than 0.6-0.8 according to the Japanese classification.
Secondly, the spinning rod is made of high-modulus graphite HMN+HME (combination 40T+46T), its sensitivity and safety margin are at the highest level. When guiding the wobbler, you can clearly feel every movement of the bait, moving to the side, touching the grass and the bottom. The tip allows you to confidently set animation for wobblers up to 90 mm long inclusive. At least there were no problems with the wiring of my favorite Daiwa TD Minnow SR series wobbler. It is very comfortable to hook and remove a predator, and the resistance of the fish is easily extinguished by the blank. In case of a bite from a not very large fish, forced fishing is allowed, but it is better not to exceed the stated upper limit of the test of 14 grams.
Thirdly, the Marauder looks quite solid and is richly equipped with fittings - FUJI MINI GUIDE SYSTEM mini-rings with Tangle Free anti-wrap ring frames, the rings themselves are arranged according to the KR-Guide System concept. The Marauder's casting characteristics are completely fine; the rod, with its short length, allows you to deliver the bait quite far, while you can forget about the cord tangling with the tip or ring. The handle in this series of spinning rods has an ergonomic stylish design; the lightweight and spaced design does not interfere with the elbow and does not cling to clothing. The reel seat is covered with warm and quick-drying EVA material, the screw nut has a pleasant ruby color and adds some charm to the overall appearance of the Marauder series. It also cannot be noted that the Marauder, under certain conditions, can be used as a jig spinning rod; the sensitivity of the blank allows you to track the contact of the bottom with weights of 3 grams or more. The best way to fish with them is from a boat; still, you shouldn’t expect ultra-long casting from a short spinning rod. The only minor criticism was the case - it quickly loses its original appearance and is quite damaged, but this is not critical, since I prefer to put spinning rods in tubes.
So, in the price category of up to 10 thousand rubles, the Maximus company managed to produce an excellent spinning rod for fishing with twitching and partly with light jigs. The amazing sensitivity of the form and rich fittings coupled with a stylish design, in my opinion, left its closest competitors behind. An excellent choice for true lovers of comfortable twitch fishing!
Components and special features of the rod
Review of Shimano Nasci spinning rod
The first thing you notice when you pick up a spinning rod is the cork handle with decorative metal elements. The front part of the handle is reinforced with an EVA insert. At first glance, the handle is made flawlessly; reviews from customers who have used the Maximus Marauder for several seasons confirm the quality of the build. High-quality cork does not crumble.
The Fuji reel seat mounted on the spinning rod has a nut that is covered by an aluminum ring. This ring is burgundy with grooves. The rings are on a Fuji blank; they have a steel frame supported by a leg. Three rings form a cone, and the rest (ranings) have the same diameter. The tulip has sloping ribs, which, together with the design of the rings, reduces the likelihood of line tangling to a minimum.
Maximus Marauder 662L
Marauder is a twitching series of spinning rods from the Korean company Maximus. Consists of three classic tests - up to 14, up to 21 and up to 28 grams. All three models are the same length – 6'6'' - 1.98 meters. Personally, I have a model - 662L with a test of up to 14. I will say in advance that I really liked the spinning rod, then it will be clear why.
Characteristics of Maximus Marauder 662L: Length (cm): 198 Test (g): 3-14 Weight (g): 86 Build: extra-fast Sections (pcs): 2 Shipping length (cm): 99
After several months of fishing, we can say for sure that the stated characteristics are correct. The only thing is that, like any other spinning rods with such a system, the lower test is indicated formally. With such rigidity, it is impossible to achieve a comfortable cast of 3-4 grams; the blank does not bend. Most of the bass rod series, similar in type to the Marauder, allow a significant excess in the test; here it is better to stick to the limits indicated in the characteristics. The structure is rigid, angry, the lightness is amazing, the design is interesting and beautiful in general, there are no questions about the assembly. Fuji KR series guides, Fuji reel seat. Comes with a red velvet cover with two ties.
The rod was created for twitch fishing and it copes with this very well. The Marauder 662L works with minnow wobblers from 4-5 to 10-12 grams, depending on persistence and depth. They can also be used for jig fishing where long casting is not needed (small river from the shore, fishing from a boat). The sensitivity of the spinning rod is excellent, a distinct knock “in the hand” almost from the very bottom of the test on a hard bottom in calm weather. Uniform wiring of the hardware and crank/shad wobblers also does not go unnoticed. Thanks to its rigidity, you can comfortably fish with deep-sea stubborn models. The hook is confident, even though the rod is “shorty”.
It is better to equip the MaximusMarauder 662L with a reel 2500 according to Daiwa or 2500/C3000S according to Shimano within 230-240 grams, so as not to spoil the impression of the lightness of the rod. “Thousands” and “twos” will be rather weak for such a hard spinning rod with such a test. Cord 0.8-1.0 according to Japanese numbering.
As a result, we can say that Marauder is an excellent series of twitching spinning rods, equipped with modern fittings and excellent sensitivity. Three running tests will allow you to choose the Marauder that will perfectly cope with a box of available wobblers from “fifty kopecks” to weighty “one hundred tenths” and “one hundred and thirties”.
Design Marauder 7-28
The design of the Korean spinning rod is made in subdued colors, which are most often found in more expensive fishing rods. Spinning looks like this:
- The form itself is dark gray in color.
- The burgundy decorative edging of the fittings gives the rod a special flavor.
- The form contains a lot of text information, which can be used to determine various parameters of the spinning rod.
Despite the huge number of inscriptions, they look laconic without spoiling the design. The blank itself is made of two high-modulus graphites. All spinning rods of the Marauder family have very hard butts. The tip of the rod, although softened closer to the tip, is also quite rigid.
The connection of the upper knee on the outside is reinforced with a proprietary bandage consisting of graphite fibers. This boost is called Carbon Wrapping Power Connection (CWP).
