Among the many manufacturers of components for spinning, special attention has always been paid to manufacturers of reels; inertia-free reels for this type of fishing require only good quality. The Japanese company Ryobi has long been one of the leaders in sales of such products; the quality of its products has always been at the proper level and still does not lose its position.
The lineup is periodically replenished with new models, but most anglers remain faithful to the choice they made many years ago.
A little about the company
Ryobi products are known all over the world; few fishermen have never heard of this name. Ryobi is now a major manufacturer of fishing tackle. But they started from something completely different.
In the early 40s of the last century, the company Ryobi was registered in Japan, which was engaged in the production of various aluminum components for workshops. After 30 years, it was decided to retrain and launch our own production of finished products, and the direction chosen was fishing.

Ask a Question
Within 10 years, Riobi won the recognition of many fishing enthusiasts, and 20 years later it reached the world level in terms of brand popularity. Now Riobi is extremely popular; excellent quality and relatively low price only increase the demand for its products.
Terms of use
Spinning reels from Riobi and other manufacturers must be used correctly for long-term operation. Mistakes in this matter can be very expensive, and sometimes it can result in complete incapacity of the product.
For everything to work perfectly, you must adhere to the following rules:
- There is no need to lubricate it immediately after purchasing a new coil, but it is better to give a used product for preventive maintenance;
- it is necessary to wind the line or cord with the bracket lowered, passing through the line layer;
- winding is carried out only with a tightly stretched base; the slightest sagging can subsequently cause loops and beards;
- when fishing, under no circumstances should you allow water, or especially sand, to get under the spool body;
- When moving from place to place, it is advisable to fold the handle, this will help avoid minor damage.
In addition, every year after the end of the spinning season, usually in late autumn or early winter, it is worth carrying out preventive measures. You need to lubricate thoroughly, but there should not be a large amount of oil in the coil.
Ryobi reels - description
Ryobi reels are a Japanese brand. It differs from other brothers in the presence of a reciprocating spool handle, special sensitivity to mechanical stress, and a long service life.
The ergonomics of the reels are thought out to the smallest detail:
- The body is made of impact-resistant aluminum, which prevents damage.
- To avoid line overlaps, a semi-closed roller with titanium coating is provided.
- For a smoother descent of the line onto the cone roller after casting, the design includes a tubular line-laying arm.
- Some models are equipped with a durable filtration mechanism and additional bearings.
- If desired, almost all models can be converted for left or right hand use.
Rules for using reels
Ryobi reels are sensitive to impact, so you must adhere to a number of rules when using:
- thoroughly fix and attach the rod;
- fasten the line laying bracket in the winding position;
- pull the cord when installing the regulator, but not too much, so that the line does not jump off when turning the spool and does not make a characteristic crack;
- To avoid breakage, it is recommended to remove the chaff from the line layer by hand;
- In order to extend the service life of products during transportation and storage, the friction brake must be slightly weakened.
Coil design
A special feature of the Ryobi design is the presence of a cone-shaped bow for precise line release on rollers. Some mechanisms are endless screws to ensure high-quality laying and winding of the fishing line.
The reel body is metal. Includes:
- spool;
- rotor;
- tubular line handle;
- grooves with s-shaped system;
- drive mechanism;
- gear pair;
- reverse stopper.
The reels contain many metal bearings, so when purchasing, you should pay attention to the markings. The more bearings in the composition, the longer the service life of the product.
Advantages and disadvantages
Riobi coils are offered for sale in high quality and at an affordable price:
Advantages:
- metal case;
- the presence of a rotor and spool made of aluminum alloys;
- light weight;
- excellent strength of products due to carbon inserts;
- titanium coating of the line laying roller;
- built-in instantaneous anti-reverse bearing;
- high quality;
- long service life;
- a large number of bearings in the design for smooth operation of the reel;
- the presence of an endless screw to ensure perfect laying and winding of fishing line;
- ease of use for long casts;
- absence of extraneous sounds when fishing.
How to choose a reel
Choosing a reel for a fishing rod is not as difficult as it seems at first glance. In order for everything to comply with the specified standards, you need to know the following form parameters:
- length;
- casting.
Based on these indicators, the size of the spool is selected. Usually, the larger the casting and the longer the rod, the larger the spool. Ideally it would be like this:
- A 1000 spool is suitable for spinning rods with a small cast; this reel option is ideal for ultralights and some lights;
- Size 2000 is set for forms whose test starts from 5 g; according to experienced fishermen, the maximum casting should be no more than 25;
- 3000 is selected for forms from 270 cm in length, while the maximum test of the rod exceeds 30 g.
Different spool sizes will hold different amounts of cord or fishing line; the larger the spool, the more spacious it is.
The bearings of these reels are rarely looked at; the manufacturer conscientiously fulfills the stated parameters. If there are 3 to 5 bearings, the reel will work just fine, and an additional one in the line guide will significantly extend the service life of the product.
Review of the Ryobi Arctica 3000 CF reel - No. 2
I recently bought this reel for an ultralight spinning rod. I’ll say right away that I’m very pleased. I bought it from a well-known online store. The reel arrived in a high-quality box. The first inspection made the most favorable impression.
Great design. No traces of processing or burrs (yes, that happened). High-quality galvanic processing. Excellent work of the whole mechanism. Smooth rotation and virtually no parasitic backlash. The body and rotor are made of aluminum alloy and are quite lightweight.
Excellent clutch with “fine” tuning. The friction discs are made of carbon. “Thick” line handle coated with titanium nitride. The same goes for the “working” part of the spool. This significantly increases wear resistance and increases service life. The bow opens with little effort. This prevents it from being reset arbitrarily.
The Ryobi Arctica 3000 CF reel is equipped with seven ball bearings and one roller bearing. Excellent line winding (although I had to remove one of the two washers under the spool) - a classic “reverse” cone.
I wound the line without load - that’s why there are small “hills”. During a fishing trip, I rewound it with a load and they disappeared.
The handle of the Ryobi Arctica 3000 CF reel is also made of metal and is not foldable. This is not entirely convenient for transportation, but it allows you to develop a decent traction force. My record on this reel is a trout weighing 2400 grams. The reel spool is quite large, which makes casting easier and allows you to increase its distance (especially with thin braided lines). For example, a four-gram wobbler, “crank” class, with a spinning rod 220 cm long and with a “braid” of 0.1 mm. — I cast at 30-35 meters completely calmly.
How to distinguish an original from a fake
Lately there have been a lot of counterfeits of Riobi reels of various models on the market. Chinese craftsmen, and representatives of other nationalities, copy products for profit. But it won’t be possible to do absolutely everything, since certain components are quite expensive.
Models Exia, Zauber, Arctica in the original have an endless screw; pirated copies do not have this element. This can be discovered simply by carefully disassembling the coil.

Ask a Question
It will be more difficult to identify counterfeits of other models; you shouldn’t trust inscriptions and stickers; in the age of high technology, you can print and stick anything.
Pros of the Ryobi Arctica 2000 reel:
Reliable, not heavy case for this size. A really comfortable handle combined with a smooth ride and no play, you simply don’t want to let go of the reel. Quite acceptable winding for a reel in this price category. Humane price.
To be completely biased, this is the absence of an endless screw, but to be realistic, with the presence of an endless screw, the price will no longer be so affordable and, as the experiment showed, the presence of a rocker mechanism does not critically affect the quality of installation for this particular model.
A sample of the Ryobi ARCTICA 2000 reel for review was presented by the Badis company (the price tag I announced of 2800 rubles is the retail price in the company’s chain of stores).
Review of the most popular models
Ryobi's line of reels is quite large, and the company regularly adds new products to it. But for most anglers, only a few specific models remain classics.
Ryobi Arctica
This model is recommended for use with spinning forms. Different spool sizes allow you to choose the most suitable size for a particular form.
The reel has been updated several times, both internally and externally. Excellent performance of the product remains a priority; all internal components, as before, are made of high-quality materials, while maintaining the light weight of the product.
The features of the coil are:
- instant stop;
- ergonomic handle;
- titanium sputtering on some parts;
- 5 bearings inside the product.
A stylish design will complete this picture, and the silent operation can be fully appreciated during the operation of the product.
Ryobi Exia MX
This product is considered one of the best developments of the company. The line of this model consists of 4 varieties, this includes reels with the same internals, but different spool sizes from 1000 to 4000.
The product is classified as a power coil, since all internal components are made of high-quality alloy, but this did not affect the weight in any way. The manufacturer guarantees that the six-kilogram force will not cause any harm to the reel.
Features of this model are:
- an endless screw, which will allow you to wind the fishing line tightly and evenly even with the thinnest diameter;
- instant stop;
- the presence of a sufficient number of bearings will make the move smooth and silent.

Ask a Question
Most often, this model is purchased for jerking with spinning baits, but it is also perfect for others.
Ryobi Ecusima
The model appeared on the market in 2006 and immediately firmly established itself among the leaders in its pricing policy. The model is made according to all the standards of premium reels, the only difference will be a significantly lower pulling force, due to this the cost has been reduced.
The main characteristics are as follows:
- extensive range, spool sizes range from 1000 to 8000;
- The line guide and roller are made of titanium.
Otherwise, the reel is no different from other, more expensive models, but as a bonus, it comes with a spare graphite spool for fishing line.
Ryobi Fokamo
This model is classified as a more budget reel, but the quality of Riobi is present in everything here too. The weight of the reel will vary depending on the size of the spool:
- 1000 weighs 262 g;
- 2000 is equal to 264 g;
- 3000 will tighten 310 g;
- 4000 spool is equal to 312 g.
The body is made of impact-resistant graphite, the spool is metal, but the weight is relatively light. A distinctive feature will be a less even laying of the fishing line or cord, but the difference is hardly noticeable.
Ryobi Zauber
The first reel of this series amazed anglers in 2004, since then it has not left the leading place at all. Students liked the all-metal insides of the model, as well as the same spool with a lightweight body. The presence of titanium on the line roller and the sides of the spool helps to reel in the warp perfectly and also avoid tangling when discarding.
Instant stop and endless screw also know their stuff.
Zauber CF
The model is an excellent representative of Riobi with some improvements, in particular the previous model. At first glance, these two models are almost identical, but they differ in some characteristics.
The differences are as follows:
- the handle is more comfortable due to carbon fiber bezels;
- the product is more durable, the maximum loads are significantly higher than its predecessor;
- carbon inserts completely guarantee the absence of play and squeaking even after several years of use.
The spool also comes with improvements; the lightweight body is not afraid of power loads.
The top five are impressive with their performance, but less popular reels from this manufacturer also have performance that is no worse.
Ryobi Arctica - Review and reviews of the spinning reel
The Arctica series takes pride of place in Ryobi's catalog of high-quality and inexpensive spinning reels.
This series has good build quality and improved design components. The one-piece reel body is made of high-quality aluminum alloy. The handle of the reels has a convenient folding design to facilitate their transportation. The sides of the spool are protected from abrasive influences thanks to a titanium nitride coating. The lightweight hollow line handle and roller are also coated with titanium nitride, which will help ensure long and gentle operation of braided cords, preventing them from tangling. The smooth running of the rotor of Arctica reels is ensured by the operation of 5 ball bearings + 1 roller bearing. The series is also equipped with an instantly triggered anti-reverse, preventing reverse movement of the rotor. This series is equipped with a front brake clutch, which makes it possible to precisely adjust the braking force and thereby maintain the integrity of the fishing line when fighting large actively resisting fish. The progressive laying system produces high-quality winding of the fishing line evenly and tightly.
Other models
In addition to the above-mentioned world-famous models, the company also produces others. Some anglers, when they see the Ryobi badge, immediately grab it, so they understand that this is an excellent quality reel. Among these are the following models:
- Apllause features a wide spool, front drag, roller design that prevents warp from tangling.
- Slem is chosen for working with the thinnest cords, but the model is also available with large spools, it is distinguished by a black body design and excellent overall performance.
- Spiritual is one of the new models, it is distinguished by a new modification of the handle, in all other respects the company adheres to the classics, the reel perfectly withstands power loads, is light, strong, durable with skillful handling.
- Tresor is a budget option, the price/quality ratio is excellent. The rubberized handle is a feature of the model; the product is suitable for both a novice fisherman and an experienced angler. The reel is produced with different spool sizes, so it can be used on different forms of spinning rods.
There is no point in further listing the branded models produced; each of them will differ from an identical reel from another manufacturer.

One of the best series in the Ryobi spinning reel collection
In the catalog of reels of the Japanese company Ryobi, there are many spinning reels, the favorable price-quality ratio of which has made the brand name popular among a wide range of anglers. A prominent place among them is occupied by the Ryobi Arctica 3000 reel, which developed and continued the traditions of the famous Ecusima series. It is produced in the same line of sizes, from 1000 to 8000, and has no less excellent build quality. Despite the winter and snowy name, there are no Arctic motifs in its design, except for the aluminum boss on the handle, reminiscent of a beautiful piece of ice. A strict combination of gold, nickel and black lacquer coating, a bit reminiscent of an Ecusima reel, looks quite stylish and respectable. Having much in common with the above series, the Ryobi Arctica 3000 reel differs from it in certain details:
Lighter weight - achieving improved design components; Bottom-mounted brake, which many anglers find more convenient; The friction brake has rear adjustment, is adjusted quite finely, and operates smoothly.
The undoubted advantage of this series is that it belongs to the Ryobi brand. The brand, as a proven quality mark, guarantees high consumer benefits and convenience.
But there are also specific advantages that will interest both an experienced sports fisherman and a simple spinning fan:
To make the Ryobi Arctica 3000 reel easily packed into a case, its handle has a convenient folding design; To prevent braided line from abrading the spool edge, the spool edge is coated with durable titanium nitride; Smooth and even operation of the power drive is supported by 6 high-quality corrosion-resistant bearings (5 ball +1 roller); The lightweight tubular structure of the line handle is polished and coated with hard titanium nitride; The line roller is also protected by titanium nitride, the closed design of which eliminates the possibility of twisting, overlapping and tangling of the fishing line;
Useful tips
If you are planning to purchase a reel from this manufacturer, then it is advisable to first study the available products, and only then go shopping. It is better to do this in the company of a specialist who will help you choose a product specifically for your form; in the absence of such assistants, you should adhere to the following recommendations:
- for selection, it is better to take the spinning rod form with you;
- original coils should operate silently, there should be no extraneous sounds;
- check the package, Riobi includes a passport with almost every model, which shows how to disassemble and assemble the reel yourself;
- fabric bags are included with all reels regardless of their cost.
The remaining parameters are purely individual, but you should understand that such reels will not be cheap.
Review of the Ryobi Arctica 2000 reel - No. 1
We check the technical specifications for accuracy. The specified metal case in the specifications corresponds to reality. The handle of the Ryobi Arctica 2000 reel is ergonomically comfortable, backlash is minimized. The number of bearings also corresponds to the kinematic diagram. Gear ratio 5.1:1. For those who are not in the know, the gear ratio, designated as proportion, means the number of times the rotor rotates around the spool during one full turn of the handle. The smaller the first digit of the gear ratio, the greater the traction force the reel can develop. Therefore, it is conventionally considered that reels with a gear ratio of less than 5:1 are traction, and those greater than 5:1 are high-speed. I haven’t checked the capacity, but I think that everything is in order with these parameters. I wasn’t too lazy and weighed the coil on an electronic scale - exactly 270 grams.
The characteristics have been checked. Now the general appearance, smoothness. Personally, I like the reel design. I was surprised by the velvety ride of the ARCTICA 2000 and the absence of parasitic backlash. It’s been a long time since I’ve held a budget-level reel in my hands (in the retail price range in Novosibirsk 2800-3400 rubles) with such a smooth ride. To fully understand how successful the new 2011 product is, the Ryobi ARCTICA 2000, I wound it with Power Pro 0.15 braid. The experiment showed that winding is no worse than on the once legendary Banax Cion 700S (which still serves me faithfully). But if now I had a choice between ARCTICA and Cion, I would definitely choose the new product from Ryobi. Moreover, the Cion 700S has an endless screw for even laying of the fishing line, and in the ARCTICA 2000 model the reciprocating movements of the spool are carried out due to the rocker mechanism.
To summarize the above:
