Ilmen is a place for a fisherman

Lake Ilmen

Lake Ilmen is a lake in the Novgorod region, located in the lowest part of the Ilmen lowland.
The area at the average level is 982 sq. km. The length is about 45 km, the width is up to 35 km, the banks are low-lying, especially the eastern ones, and very swampy; along the northwestern coast (Poozerie) there are ridges alternating with depressions. For the safety of navigation on this stormy lake, the Siversov and Vishersky canals were dug. During the spring flood, the area of the water surface increases 3.4 times, and the volume of water increases 8 times.

Ilmen is the only reservoir in Russia in which the water drop during a flood reaches 7 m. More than fifty rivers flow into Ilmen, among them the Meta, Pola, Lovat, Shelon, etc., and only one river flows out - the Volkhov, so the flow of the reservoir is very high , the water is completely replaced in two months (in Lake Ladoga, for example, this happens only in 12 years). In some places the shores are created by river deltas with many floodplain islands and channels. According to researcher I.V. Kuchina, in the 19th century in Ilmen there were exotic, by today's standards, fish: Ladoga trout, grayling, whitefish and sterlet.

After the construction of the Volkhov hydroelectric power station in Ilmen, whitefish, eels, and trout disappeared. Now it is inhabited by a “standard” European set: pike, pike perch, bream, roach, perch, ide, asp, sop (blue), silver bream, ruff, smelt, etc. Catfish and eel are very rarely found. Recently, the numbers of saberfish and rudd have increased noticeably. The most popular fishing spots can be reached by personal and public vehicles - these are the villages of Navolok, Golino, Kuritsko, Erunovo, etc. But the main part of the Ilmen water area is inaccessible without boats. The weather rarely spoils local fishermen, a strong southwest wind often blows - a “shelonnik”, a serious wave rises on the lake, so fishing usually takes place in bays, at the mouths of rivers or close to the shore, in quiet areas.

For spinning anglers, the main fishing objects are pike and perch. Ide, asp and pike perch are found only occasionally. The ubiquitous small perch recently became rare, and if earlier it was a piece of cake to catch it, recently “boilers” are rarely seen in the hot summer months. The reason is that Novgorod perch suddenly became in demand in the Scandinavian countries, and our fishermen, who had previously not paid attention to this “trash” fish, rushed to catch perch with all their might. And this is not so difficult: I saw seagulls, surrounded the “cauldron” with a seine, and the entire school was caught. So the perch was killed. Even small merchants got into this business and began buying perch from amateur fishermen, especially in winter. Those who want to catch peaceful fish usually arm themselves with a float rod or donks. Their usual catch is bream, roach, silver bream, and ide. White fish in Ilmen are not capricious; they bite on worms, maggots, and dough. Bloodworms, caddis flies and other “exotic” baits are not at all necessary.

Winter fishing is no less popular among Novgorodians. Thousands of fishermen go out on the ice of Lake Ilmen on weekends. The main object of hunting is perch, it is caught with a jig, spoon, or balance beam. Closer to spring, white fish bite and bream wakes up. Unfortunately, fishing rules completely prohibit winter fishing with girders - supposedly amateur fishermen are killing off the breeding stock of pike. At the same time, fishermen can catch pike. I believe that there are no fewer pikes caught in their seines and nets than amateurs can catch. In addition, a legitimate question arises: why can some people catch pike and others cannot?

In summer, Ilmen is attractive for ordinary recreation. The lake is shallow, warms up well, you can swim and sunbathe. The only problem is mosquitoes and horse flies. And where can you get away from them - the surrounding area is swampy and grassy. In hot summers, the water begins to “bloom” and fish activity decreases.

The bottom of Ilmen, unfortunately for fishermen, is flat - no holes, no snags, no stones. During the summer-autumn “drought”, the water goes hundreds of meters from the shore, leaving only a small saucer of water in the center, where all the fish roll off. And there she has nowhere to hide from the seines and smooth nets of numerous fishing crews. For the fish population, real happiness is when the water is large. The fish scatter through the grass and bushes to bury themselves and survive. One winter, during “high water,” while fishing with a jig, I managed to find a perch next to a haystack in a flooded field.

For those wishing to fish on Ilmen, we recommend visiting it in mid-July, taking with you an inflatable boat, spinning gear and a fishing rod. At this time, marmosets are caught well in the eastern part of the lake, and grass pike are found along the shore. Tackle for catching perch - "spinners" No. 1-3 with a yellow petal, small rippers and twisters - red, yellow and pearlescent colors. If the bite is sluggish, you can catch perch with a regular float, using a dung worm.

Pike can be seduced by rotating lures No. 4-5, oscillating “stagnant” lures - such as “Atom”, “Blackback” - or modern lures. It is better to look for this predator at the border of aquatic vegetation. Sometimes pike hunt in the very thick of the grass, and then Novgorod fishermen actively use “non-hooking” baits, domestic and imported. There are significantly more bites in the grass than in open water, but there are also much more bites when fishing with a single hook.

Recently, trolling has become widespread, which was previously prohibited on Ilmen. Now you can fish “on the track” under a motor, but you are allowed to use no more than two spinning rods. Since there are no great depths in the lake, wobblers with a depth of 2-3 m are usually used for trolling. “Dead” hooks do not happen often, since the bottom is sandy and muddy, there are practically no snags and stones. The most popular place among trollers is the source of the Volkhov River.

For catching white fish, the western shore of Ilmen is preferable, where the bottom is more muddy and there is less grass. Here, with a fishing rod and donk, you can catch small white fish almost everywhere, and if you use bait, you can’t rule out catching large bream and ide. The bait is a worm, maggot. You can buy them in almost any fishing store in Veliky Novgorod. If you don’t have a boat, then waders or waders will come in handy; they’re convenient for walking along a grassy bank with a spinning rod or fishing with a fishing rod.

In order not to depend on the weather - strong winds and big waves, it is better to fish in the bays of the lake: Somin Bay (village Ospino), Lake Gusino (village Golino), Tulebel Bay (village Chertitsko), Lake Yamno, Lake Krestovoe , Velsky Bay (village Navolok), Mstonsky Bay (village Mston), Sinepky Bay (village Zamlino). In the village of Golino, the Novgorod City Society of Hunters and Fishermen offers rowing boats for rent at a reasonable price.

In winter, it is better to come for Ilmen perch in January, when the ice is already strong enough. At this time, cars are allowed to travel along it, but the “low season” has not yet arrived. It is preferable to hunt for white fish in late March - early April, depending on ice conditions. No permits or licenses are required for fishing.

Ice fishing in Lake Ilmen

Lake Ilmen is located in the west of the Novgorod region and belongs to the Baltic Sea basin. The average size of Lake Ilmen is 982 km2, but its area can vary depending on the water level, so the maximum area can be within 2090 km2, and the minimum 733 km2. The length of the lake is 45 km, and its width is about 35 km. The lake is not deep and on average its depth does not exceed 10 m.

As for its coastline, the shores are generally low-lying, swampy in some places and often have a delta-shaped structure. 50 rivers flow into Lake Ilmen, the largest tributaries are Lovat, Msta, Shelon, Vremezha, Veronda, Mshaga. Only one river flows from this reservoir - the Volkhov, which flows into Lake Ladoga.

Winter fishing on Ilmen

popular not only among local fishermen, guests from various regions of Russia also come here to fish, the main fish caught in the waters of Ilmen are pike perch, asp, bluegill, bream, silver bream, pike, perch, roach, ide, tench, sabrefish, and burbot.

The most popular and interesting routes in the Novgorod region are definitely connected with Lake Ilmen. The lake's food supply is very rich and there are a lot of fry in its waters. This contributes to good growth of the population of various predatory fish, including such large ones as catfish. Carp species, asp, bream, silver bream, blue bream, roach, and bleak also live here in large numbers.

Getting to the lake is easy, because it is located only 6 km from Novgorod. In winter, the best way to get around the lake is by snowmobile. This vehicle, even at high speed, has good freedom of maneuver and perfectly bypasses thawed patches and hummocks. However, many local fishermen, even in March, move around the lake by car, at which time the ice thickness in Ilmen can reach 0.5 m. Lake Ilmen is the only one of its kind in our country, the water level difference in it can reach 7 m, and its area increase 3 times.

For those who come to fish for the first time in Ilmen, I can give advice to look for a fishing spot where fishermen sit in large or small groups. You can determine whether the bite is good or not in such a place by the movement of the fishermen’s hands. If they move actively, it means the bite is good and you can confidently go to this place to drill holes and fish. But if fishermen sit quietly, not showing activity, there is no bite there and you need to look for another place.

Ice fishing on Lake Ilmen

, is attractive to both local and visiting fishermen. If weather conditions are appropriate, catches can even reach several tens of kilograms. However, at the beginning of March, the echo of the wilderness still continues, and catches may not be very significant. However, as soon as the ice becomes more porous, and thawed patches begin to appear, and more oxygen begins to flow into the lake, the fish will begin to show increased activity and the quality of the bite will increase significantly.

When the angler has decided on the fishing spot and knows what he wants to catch, a peaceful fish or a predator, he either starts fishing with a jig or catching with a spoon. In the first option, the prey will mainly be white fish, in the second option, the prey will be predatory fish.

To catch whitefish, you will have to feed the holes, and to catch a predator you will have to move around the lake a lot in search of promising places. Many fishermen who know local reservoirs well know that if we compare local predators with predatory fish that are caught in nearby reservoirs, then in Ilmen, then in the lake, fish of the same age as the river fish will be twice as large. This is explained by the fact that in a reservoir rich in food, predatory fish gain weight very quickly.

Fishermen who know these places well for predators, as a rule, hunt using hand-made baits. Local craftsmen make spoons of such shapes that any available fish living in local waters can bite on them without any problems.

Winter fishing on Lake Ilmen

Works well with bait such as a jig. However, when catching perch or pike perch with a spoon, the search speed for this bait only increases. Small, but quite heavy spoons reach the bottom faster and help the fisherman quickly assess the prospects of the fishing spot and its bottom topography. In addition, spinners can create acoustic vibrations in the water and thereby attract predators from longer distances than a jig does.

Successful trolling largely depends on the quality of the tackle, the correct trajectory and rhythm of the fishing rod. As a rule, the spoon is first lowered and then raised again. The main thing in such a game is to correctly guess the duration of the pause, which can usually last from 3 to 10 seconds. If a perch or pike perch approaches the hole and begins to observe the bait. This means it is better and more correct to observe a certain rhythm in the game. During its sudden change, predatory fish can continue to observe, but they become wary and miss the bait. In some cases, you can drag the spoon along the bottom a little, and in this case the trail it raises may interest the predator, and he may well be tempted by the spoon flashing in the muddy suspension.

Ice fishing in Lake Ilmen

Of course, this is not a predictable thing, especially when it comes to pike perch or pike perch. These predators love to travel and can make long migrations throughout the entire body of water. And if pike perch is less attached to the places of its permanent location, then perch moves far from its usual habitat much less often. In addition, pressure changes in early spring make perch very unpredictable. In this case, the fish can rise sharply into the middle layers of water and higher and just as sharply go to depths.

The most common fish on Lake Ilmen, according to anglers, is perch. And at the same time, perch is the most common catch. The most effective ice fishing on Lake Ilmen for this fish is during the freeze-up period, when the ice thickness is 20-35 cm. However, to catch a striped predator, you will have to drill many holes and often change fishing spots. After all, perch is a schooling fish and often moves, looking for food. In addition, catches of this fish can be significant on Ilmen. So on a good day you can easily catch 40-50 kg of perch per day.

Fishing on Lake Ilmen

Fishing on Lake Ilmen.
Novgorod region. In the west of the Novgorod region, lies the picturesque Lake Ilmen, popular among tourists, known since ancient times. It is mentioned in the Tale of Bygone Years, Russian chronicles, and is glorified in the legend of Sadko. Before the formation of Rus', it was called Moisko, but the founders of Slovensk Rus and Sloven named it after their sister Ilmera. Near the lake there are two ancient Russian cities - Staraya Russa and Novgorod the Great.

The lake of glacial origin exceeds sea level by only 18 meters and occupies about 982 km² . Depending on the season, its area varies from 730 km² to two thousand during the spring flood . The length of Lake Ilmen is approximately 45 and its maximum width is 35 kilometers.

Ilmen is not distinguished by its great depths, which do not exceed ten meters, and on average less than four. About 50 tributaries flow into it, of which the following stand out in size: Lovat with Polistu, Shelon with Mshaga, Pola, Msta, Veryazha and Veronda. Centuries-old drifts of river silt cover its bottom, turning the once deep-sea reservoir into a shallower lake. The Volkhov River flows out of the reservoir, carrying water into Lake Ladoga. The lake is flowing due to many tributaries and a small basin. If the water in the lake reaches a level that is dangerous for the surrounding villages and lands, it is discharged using the Volkhov hydroelectric power station.

Freeze-up on the lake begins in November and ends in April. The water has a yellowish tint due to the high content of organic substances. The water in it is completely changed about six times a year. In summer it does not warm up above 20 degrees except in shallow water areas. Lake Ilmen is known for its southwestern winds - “shelonniks” - and rough waters with wave heights of up to two meters, which poses a serious threat to small vessels, since they have nowhere to hide due to the lack of islands far from the shore.

The rugged shores form flat floodplain islands, small bays and channels. The northwestern coast is higher than the rest and consists of an alternating range of hills with lower areas. The southeastern and eastern shores are swampy in places. In the coastal zone there is a dense wall of reeds, except for twelve kilometers between the villages of Korostyn and Ustriki, where reddish limestone cliffs approach the shore - the famous cliff, reminiscent of the remains of an ancient fortress wall up to 30 meters high. During dry periods, a kilometer-long strip of sandy beaches opens between it and the water.

Fish wealth in ancient times gave rise to the name Ilmen Lake “golden mine”. Despite the shallowing and proximity of cities, the fish stocks of the reservoir have not yet been depleted due to the significant oxygen content in the water due to its high degree of flow. The artels here still fish for pike, perch, bream, silver bream, burbot, bluefish, sabrefish, roach, ruffe and many other species of fish, of which there are about forty in Ilmen. Neither athletes nor amateurs leave without loot.

The leading catches among fishermen are burbot, smelt, pike and bream. Recently, artel workers began to purposefully harvest perch, as it has become in demand in the Scandinavian countries. Before the Volkhov hydroelectric power station was put into operation, rarer species also lived in the lake: grayling, whitefish, and trout. Nowadays catfish or eels are occasionally found, but the populations of rudd and saberfish have increased.

The most popular fishing spots, accessible both to motorists and to those who use public transport, are located in the area of the villages: Golino, Navolok, Erunovo and Kuritsko. Most of the water area is accessible only from a boat, but strong winds and waves drive fishermen into bays and river mouths.

Mostly pike and perch are caught using spinning rods, which, due to commercial fishing, have become less numerous and are no longer as large. Its habitat is found by the concentration of seagulls. They catch it on “turntables” from numbers one to three with a petal painted yellow, on small rippers and yellow, red or mother-of-pearl twisters. If the bite is weak, then it is easier to catch a dung worm with a float rod. Individual perch in the catch do not exceed half a kilo.

Less common are asp, pike perch and ide. Non-predatory fish, mainly roach, bream and silver bream, are caught using float tackle or donkeys. She bites on maggots, worms, and dough. He also does not refuse bloodworms and caddis flies. During the hottest time, biting activity decreases.

The bottom of Lake Ilmen is devoid of holes, stones and snags, therefore during periods of drought, when the water recedes hundreds of meters from the shore and all the fish go into the remaining water space closer to the center, fishermen scoop them up with nets. But on days of high water, the fish hides in flooded bushes and grasses.

In mid-July, from an ordinary inflatable boat in the east of the lake, along the coast, on the border of the water thickets, you can catch a good grass pike with a spinning rod or fishing rod. To lure it, a rotating spinner of the fourth or fifth number, “oscillators” such as “Atom” or “Blackback” are suitable, and for fishing in the very thick of the thickets - “non-hooking”. Pike can weigh up to three kilograms.

Now trolling is allowed on Lake Ilmen, but you can fish in a “track” with no more than two spinning rods. Trollers prefer places closer to the source of the Volkhov. Wobblers are lowered to two or three meters due to shallow depths, but hooks are rare, since there are almost no obstacles at the bottom.

White fish, bream and ide, using worms and maggots are actively caught from the western shore after good bait. If you don't have a boat, wade boots are suitable. You can rent a boat in Golino. There are specimens of bream up to one and a half kilograms. In case of strong wind and waves, boats are taken to the bays: Sonmin near the village of Ospino, Tulebelsky near the village of Chertitsky, Velsky near the village of Navolok, Sinepky near Zamlino, Mstonsky near the village of Mson and others. Winter fishing for white fish is especially successful from late March to early April. In winter, especially in January, perch is caught using spinners, balance beams and jigs, and closer to spring, bream. Fishing with girders is prohibited at this time.

When coming for fishing, you should take care of firewood, since the fishermen on the shore number in the thousands, and everything that could burn has already been used, but in the wetlands there is no firewood at all. It is also worth taking care of remedies for horseflies and mosquitoes, of which there are a great many in the surrounding area.

Fishing on Ilmen

> Where to fish > Fishing in Russia and around the world > Fishing on the Ilmen

Lake Ilmen is located in the Novgorod region and is located in the lowest part of the Ilmen lowland.
The length is more than 45 kilometers, the area of Lake Ilmen is 985 km², and the width in some places reaches 35 kilometers. The lake has two canals, Vishersky and Siversky, which were created for safe navigation. During a flood, the area of Ilmen can increase 4 times. The lake feeds more than 50 rivers and a huge number of streams. The main sources feeding Ilmen are the rivers Shelon, Meta, Lovat, Pola. The most promising fishing in Lake Ilmen is
at the mouths of these and other rivers.

One of the most fishy rivers in the Novgorod region, the Volkhov, flows from Ilmen. And the flow of the lake, thanks to such factors, is very good. The water change there occurs once every 2 months, for example, in Ladoga such a change happens only once every 12 years. The shores of the lake are of a floodplain nature and there are many channels and floodplain lakes, in which there are many different fish.

Scientists claim that at the end of the 19th century, the lake was inhabited by fish that were very exotic for our time, whitefish, grayling, sterlet and Ladoga trout. But when the Volkhov hydroelectric power station was built, eel, trout, grayling and whitefish disappeared from the reservoir. Nowadays, Ilmen is home to the standard fish for the Central regions of Russia: silver bream, bream, pike perch, pike, roach, asp, perch, ide and bluegill, ruff and smelt. Rarely, but eel and catfish are found. But in recent years, the population of rudd and saberfish has increased significantly.

By personal or public transport you can get to good fishing spots, which are located near the villages of Golino, Erunovo, Kuritsko, Navolok, etc. However, the main part of the lake, where you can successfully fish without a boat, is inaccessible. Ilmen is often not pleasant with its weather; quite often the wind blows here from the southwest direction, which is called “shelonnik” here. And a strong wave rises on the pond. Then fishing on Ilmen is carried out mainly in bays near the shore or river mouths.

Lake Ilmen is characterized by a flat bottom, which is not very good for fishermen; there are practically no holes and no snags. During a period of drought, the water of the lake can go hundreds of meters from its usual shores, and in the center there is only a small area with water, where all the fish rush. And there there is nowhere for her to hide from the numerous floating nets and seines of fishermen. It is very good for the entire ichthyofauna when there is plenty of water. At this time, the fish disperses among the bushes and grass, which has a beneficial effect on its preservation and further survival.

For a spinning fan, the main fishing objects on Ilmen are perch and pike. Pike-perch asp and ide are quite rare on the Ilmen today. Perch also began to appear less frequently. His boilers are no longer as common as in years past. This is explained by the fact that for some reason perch suddenly became in demand in the Scandinavian countries and fishermen who had previously ignored this “trash” fish began a real hunt for perch. Moreover, catching striped seagulls is not difficult; watching the seagulls, they calculate the “perch cauldron” with nets and the entire flock was immediately caught. In this way, its population was significantly reduced, and it is now unknown when it will recover. Small businessmen got involved in this business and began buying perch catches from fishermen right near the lake, especially in winter.

In the summer, the predator is caught using artificial bait, primarily with a twister, spinner and popper; the predator is also caught well by the jig method. Pike and pike perch are caught using live bait with circles or girders. Linen is mainly caught on a float and feeder; the main baits for such fishing are a worm, dough, pearl barley and other vegetable baits.

Fishing on Lake Ilmen

Fishing for white fish is mainly done with a float rod and a donkey. They mainly catch roach, silver bream, ide, and bream. I am very pleased with the fact that the white fish in this reservoir are not capricious; they are excellently caught using maggots, bread, worms and dough. So it is absolutely not necessary to have caddis flies, bloodworms, bark beetle larvae and other “delicacies” with you; the most standard baits will be enough. It is better to catch whitefish on the western shore of the lake, where there is much less grass and a muddier bottom. Here, using float or bottom gear, you can catch small and medium-sized white fish almost everywhere. And if you constantly feed the place, you can catch quite large bream and ide. If you are planning to fish on the Ilmen without a watercraft, then it would be a good idea to take waders or wading boots with you, it will be more convenient for you to fish in them, even with float tackle or combing.

Winter fishing on Ilmen is deservedly popular with thousands of fishermen, and on weekends the lake is visited by a huge number of residents of Novgorod and the surrounding area. In winter, perch is mainly caught using various baits, but most often with a balancer or a jig. Before the beginning of spring, white fish begin to become active and good catches of bream and roach can be obtained.

On Ilmen, to the great regret of many fishermen, fishing with girders is prohibited in winter, so catching pike perch or pike is extremely rare. This is explained by the fact that fishing by amateur fishermen on girders supposedly harms the pike population. But at the same time, fishermen use nets and seines to catch pike with virtually no restrictions. Then the question is who can cause more damage, an amateur fisherman or a fishing crew that catches tons of this fish.

In the summer, Lake Ilmen is a very attractive place for regular outdoor recreation. This shallow reservoir warms up well, here you can sunbathe, swim, enjoy the wonderful nature and, of course, fish. The general idyll is spoiled by horseflies and mosquitoes. But this picture is observed in most reservoirs of the northern European part of Russia and there is no escape from it.

I'm going to go to Lake Ilmen with the boys. I've heard a lot about its beauty and catch. I ask those who were there to share their fishing experience and how to get to more beautiful places. where you can go fishing and go boating, as well as swim. Thanks in advance "barbulya".

Hello, dear fishermen. The day before yesterday I returned from a trip to Lake Ilmen. I want to share my impressions with YOU. Just a GREAT trip. The fishing was a success, right from the first day. We caught some good perch, small pike, and most importantly, pike perch. We caught pike perch on the Lovat River, pike and perch in the lake, in open water. The lake has no shores as such, only bays and lakes. Her Majesty "Toad" took in the bays along the edge of the grass. Perch, surprisingly, is clean, but also in bays and creeks. The catches were truly surprising in their diversity and quantity. I always take scales with me. YOU won't believe it, but for a morning meal - 28 kg. Now about the main thing - PANDER. I know this fish well. A lot of time and effort was spent studying his habits and behavior. Fished in the river, depths from 4 to 12 m, weight maximum 18 grams. ,current 0.5-2 km/h. Beauty. The fish are a little over 1 kg. through casting. There were no trophies, but there was DYNAMICS. Silicone bait (3-5 cm). The colors are natural, not fancy. Porollon-ZERO. It came down to the float. They fed “sawdust; The catches were not bad for large scoundrels, plover, perch, and silver bream. Local" online; They catch good ides, but I, with these handsome guys, have no mutual understanding. That's all for now. I'm looking for a team of 4 people for the next trip to Ilmen.

Re: oh. Ilmen (Novgorod Region)

Hi all! Ilmen is a beauty, I have been visiting it every summer for 3 years now. And in general I fell in love with the Novgorod land, I advise everyone to visit it. But I’m not doing well with fishing on Ilmen. on the rivers, especially on the Pole, on the Uchonka - always with a catch, and on high water - more often than not. I'll hit you all with my back, not even a poke. Local fishermen come on ships and use a seine to take 300-500 kg of fish from this place. crocodiles weighing 10 kilos are tossing and turning in the cage. I think this: 1. the predator in Ilmen is overfed, there is just a wall of white fish there. so he doesn’t throw himself at the iron. 2. you need to know the place and time, travel with the natives, since Ilmen is very susceptible to seasonality, the water rises, then goes down, then blooms. I advise everyone to invite themselves into the lake with fishermen from fish farms, an unforgettable excursion! I went with people from Vzvad and from Ustrek, Vzvad is more interesting, I’ll give you the Lovat delta of indescribable beauty, the kingdom of fish and birds.. I’ll post some of the photos if anyone is interested. Good luck!

Fishing on Lake Ilmen: winter, summer, video

The picturesque Lake Ilmen is located south of the ancient Russian city of Veliky Novgorod, the water area is about 730 square meters. km, but during spring floods it increases by more than 3 times. The mirror is 45 km long and 35 km wide. Fishing on the Ilmen will bring fans a lot of joy and desired trophies.

Lakes of the Novgorod region

There are 46 species of fish in the Novgorod lakes. The most valuable of them are eel, Volkhov whitefish and smelt.

Located in the west of the region. The area of the water surface depends on the water level and ranges from 733 to 2090 square meters. km. Approximate width 35 km, length 45 km. The depth reaches 10 m. The water drop can reach up to 7 meters. The nature of the shores is varied, there are rocky ridges, swamps and floodplains. More than 50 rivers flow into the lake, only the Volkhov flows out. Many organic substances give the water a yellowish color.

The lake is home to 26 species of fish. The most numerous inhabitant is considered to be smelt. There are a lot of trophy perch, the best time to catch them is winter. A limit has been introduced on the catch of bream, pike perch and pike.

What kind of fish is found in Lake Ilmen

This is the only natural reservoir in Russia where the water is completely renewed within 2 months. The depths are small, on average 4 m, but there are also depressions up to 10 m. More than 50 rivers flow into Lake Ilmen, but only one flows out, so the shores are cut by deltas of flowing rivers, there are many islands and channels where they fish when the lake is stormy storm.

To describe all the types of fish in Ilmen, a separate article will be needed, but it is reliably known that about fifty different fish live in the lake, among which there are many predators: pike, pike perch, perch, burbot and even catfish; whitefish used to be caught, but after the construction of a hydroelectric power station on the river Volkhov, he cannot migrate here. It is excellent to catch rudd, silver bream, ide, sabrefish and bream on Lake Ilmen at any time of the year. It is very rare to catch an eel, and quite recently the media reported that a sturgeon was caught in Lake Ilmen, weighing more than 34 kg.

Fishing rules Lake Ilmen

As in all regions of the Russian Federation, there is a fishing ban on the reservoir during spawning: from the beginning of May to the end of June, but every year the time shifts, so when planning a trip you need to clarify the restrictions with the fish inspection department of Lake Ilmen. In addition to the spring ban, there are restrictions on winter fishing, but this applies to pike and only fishing with girders, and trolling is allowed.

Shore fishing and fishing from a boat

Many visiting amateurs fish on Lake Ilmen only from the shore; for this, the best conditions are on the west coast, the bottom here is muddy with minimal vegetation, so there are no negative hooks and tangling of gear. These are mainly bream lovers, who are ready to wait for a long time for a bite from cautious fish, having baited the fishing spot in advance.

Fans of spinning and active fishing from a boat bring them with them, and those who do not have such an opportunity rent watercraft from the local population, who have organized quite a profitable business on Lake Ilmen, selling bait, bait and renting out fishing rods and spinning rods. It is much more convenient to catch the coveted trophy on the Ilmen from a boat, especially pike and perch, which hunt near reed thickets, in aquatic vegetation, which cannot be reached without a reliable floating device. The coveted bream is 1.5 kg easier to catch near a deserted island in the delta of the flowing rivers than on the muddy shore of Lake Ilmen.

How to fish on Lake Ilmen

The weather rarely indulges in good days; quite often a strong wind raises waves on the lake, so it is prohibited for boats to go out onto the mirror, but you can fish in the channels and between the islands. On the Ilmen, using a float fishing rod, you can catch not only bream, roach, ide and silver bream, but also large perch and small squirrels up to 1 kg. Perch began to be taken less for spinning, because its population has sharply decreased, because the delicacy from Lake Ilmen was liked by the inhabitants of the Scandinavian Peninsula, and fishing cooperatives almost completely caught large specimens to send abroad. If you are lucky, you will catch an asp or a long-awaited pike perch weighing 1.5 kg on a spinning rod.

Novgorod

I spend most of my free time at the Ilmen club. Usually with friends, of whom there are always many, so houses that can easily accommodate up to a dozen guests are very suitable.

We relax in different ways. In the summer we swim, fish, sunbathe. In winter, we also fish and relax in the clean, frosty air.

I'm glad that it's close to Novgorod and has good access. We try to book a house in advance, because you could end up homeless if you arrive without calling.

My friends and I like it. A unique place - something like this can rarely be found anywhere else. Of course, not for everybody. Try it, maybe you are like us.

Moscow

My friends and I constantly go fishing in different places. The turn came to Ilmen, a lake in the Novgorod region. There are a lot of reviews about good fishing. We decided to check it ourselves.

Based on available reviews, we chose the place – the village of Vzvad. The most fishing spots are close to them. Confirmed. We settled immediately at the fishing base. We really enjoyed fishing. The only disappointment is that you have to cook the food yourself. Not a problem, of course, but after fishing, tired, it’s somehow difficult...

There are places where you can keep the fish you catch.

VIP rooms, triple, double and single rooms are available for accommodation in the fisherman's house. In total, the base can accommodate 23 people.

There are many different services offered to guests here. Among them are cleaning and gutting of caught fish, parking, snowmobiles, gazebos, barbecues, billiards, bathhouse, etc. For everything the price is from 1.5 thousand rubles.

Novgorod

That Vzvad knew a place worthy of fishing for a long time. But now I met him with my own eyes. I got there, one might say, by accident - my friends decided to go fishing and celebrate the birthday of one of them. It turned out to be a very (!) good combination. This will be remembered for a long time.

It didn't take long to choose a place to stay. One of our company was at the Fisherman's House, and we decided to stay there. There are many of us, so at first we faced the problem of settlement - there weren’t enough places for everyone. We had to take a tent - some of us were staying in it. The base administration gave permission.

We only took gear with us - spinning rods and float and feeder rods. We used everything. During the day we caught 2…3 fish soup, and there was still some left to fry. The catch includes medium-sized fish, pike up to 2…3 kg. Just something that’s pleasant to eat and great for making fish soup.

We cooked it ourselves, ordered it a couple of times and had it made to suit the local administration staff. To be honest, I liked mine better.

I liked the place. Avid fishermen will also like it.

How to get to Lake Ilmen

Car owners get from Moscow along the M-9 or M-11 highway, and from St. Petersburg the best option is along the E105/M-10 or E95/R-23, because you can bring a motor boat with you and easily get to the very catchable places on the lake. From Veliky Novgorod it’s easy to get to the villages of Erunovo, Ilmen, Kozynevo or Korostyn, where you can rent a room and start your vacation.

Take a bus from Moscow or St. Petersburg to Veliky Novgorod, and then take a minibus to your final destination.

By train to Veliky Novgorod or Staraya Russa station - it depends on the chosen base (from which city it is closest), then take a local bus or minibus. If the seats have been booked in advance, the administration can carry out a transfer from the above cities to the location of the base.
