Church of St. Nicholas in Klenniki
located at the very beginning of Moscow Maroseyka Street, a few steps from the exit from the Kitay-Gorod metro station.
The history of the temple dates back more than one century: a wooden church was first erected on this site in the mid-15th century. One of the shrines is the relics of the holy righteous Alexy (Mechev), who served in the temple.
Story
On this site was the Church of Simeon Divnogorets, built according to the vow of John III in 1468 in one day, in gratitude that the severe fire of Moscow did not spread to the Kremlin. This church was mentioned in 1625.
The current church was built in 1657 close to the Church of Simeon Divnogorets, which explains the fracture of the wall of the northern aisle. The church was rebuilt several times.
St. Nicholas Church, 1883. View from the southwest.
In the 17th century, the church was called the Church of St. Nicholas “in Blinniki” (Sytin mentions that they actually sold pancakes here), but in the 18th century “Blinniki” somehow transformed into “Klenniki”. There is an assumption that this is connected with the appearance of the icon of St. Nicholas in the village of Klenniki near Moscow. In metric 1886-87. O.
The church was significantly rebuilt after the fire of 1701: the upper part of the quadrangle was dismantled, and the lower part was turned into a basement, above which a new, double-height volume with an apse and a vestibule was erected, which acquired the features of the “Naryshkin style.”
After the fire of 1748, the church was significantly updated, and a bell tower was erected in 1749. Other renovations of the church are mentioned in 1853, 1868, 1894. The main Kazan throne was built on the second floor.
In the 1920s, the external decor, lost during the reconstruction of the 18th-19th centuries, was restored. At the end of the 1920s, the chapel of Alexy, the man of God, was built in the temple.
In 1932 the temple was closed. The last Divine Liturgy was celebrated on the Annunciation. After her, the only priest of the temple remaining at large by that time was arrested. On October 6, the temple was finally closed and destroyed.
The chapter was demolished from the bell tower, and the chapter along with the octagonal drum from the quadrangle, so that it simply ended with a hipped roof. The church building was used after internal redevelopment as a utility room for neighboring institutions - the Central Committee of the Komsomol was located in house No. 3, which located its accounting department here. The altar part was used as a cash register. In the quadrangle, at the level of the high windows, the upper floor was built. All church decoration and wall paintings were destroyed with great care, with the only exception being the painting of the inaccessibly high ceiling of the Kazan chapel quadrangle.. Part of the church building was rebuilt for housing. The building was under state protection.
After the temple was returned to believers on July 18, 1990, the destroyed domes were restored.

The Church of St. Nicholas in Klenniki is rightfully considered one of the most original monuments of Moscow architecture of the 17th-18th centuries. According to metrical extracts of 1886-1887, she was attributed to the Sretensky forty. From the metric it follows that the temple was built in stone in 1657, but was rebuilt again in 1749 after being significantly damaged by fire in 1748. The same metric stipulates that no important historical events took place in the temple. However, this does not make the fate of the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Klenniki, which has a five-century history, any less interesting.
As the Nikon and Patriarchal chronicles testify, on May 23, 1468, a severe fire raged in the territory now located under the church, affecting most of the Moscow suburb and only miraculously sparing the Kremlin. After such a disaster, Grand Duke John III ordered the construction of a votive temple for Simeon the Divnogorets at the indicated location. And a little later, a brick chapel of St. Nicholas and a chapel in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary were added to the building of the temple. As a result of subsequent fires, which were quite common occurrences in Moscow in the 18th century, the votive church ceased to exist. In general, fires engulfed the wooden city so often that they were no longer considered emergencies and were often “forgot” to be documented. Therefore, the details of the disappearance of the wooden part of the temple have not reached the present day; it is only known that this happened in 1748. After this incident, the church burned down several times, was rebuilt and expanded with new additions.
Towards the end of the 17th century, the territory where the temple was located is mentioned in chronicles as “Blinniki”. According to other sources, it was called “Klenniki”. The 1886-1887 metric refers to an oral tradition that there was once a maple grove on this site. The veracity of this legend cannot be verified. However, it does explain the name of the church.
During the years of Soviet power, the Church of St. Nicholas in Klenniki was closed. In 1932, the last Annunciation Divine Liturgy was celebrated within its walls. After which the only active clergyman of the temple was taken under arrest. The shrine itself was devastated and underwent redevelopment, which made it possible to use the premises as a utility room for the Komsomol Central Committee. The Committee's accounting department was now located here. The altar part was converted into cash registers, and a new floor was created in the upper part of the building. They hastened to get rid of all the temple utensils, and the paintings on the walls were erased or painted over. Only one painting on the ceiling of the Kazan chapel has survived; due to its high location, they could not destroy it.
For a long time, the holy monastery remained abandoned and only in 1990 the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker in Klenniki returned to the fold of existing churches. And our virtual 3D tour will take you through the premises of the temple and show you the beauty of the paintings on its walls and the magnificent icons, partially made in the workshop at the church.

Schedule of services
Current schedule of services
In the Church of St. Nicholas in Klenniki, two great shrines are especially revered - the locally revered image of the Mother of God “Theodorovskaya” and the relics of the holy righteous Alexy, presbyter of Moscow.
Weekly services are performed before them:
A prayer service is served to the image of the Queen of Heaven with the singing of the paraklis (canon of the Mother of God) on Wednesdays after Vespers.
At the shrine with the holy relics of the holy righteous Alexis, a prayer service with an akathist is served on Tuesdays, also after Vespers.
These services are performed weekly, except in cases where a festive service is scheduled in the evening.
The holy relics of Elder Alexy rest in a specially designated room in the lower church; access to them is open during the day.
The holy relics reside in a wooden shrine with a short life carved on it. On the hinged lid of the reliquary there is a life-size image of the holy righteous Alexis embroidered in silk and gold.
Every day, twice a day, a prayer service is served to the holy righteous Alexy, presbyter of Moscow, at the shrine with the relics:
- On weekday mornings the prayer service starts at 7:45
- on Sundays and holidays, when two Divine Liturgies are celebrated, a prayer service is served after the early liturgy
- in the evening, a prayer service at the holy relics is served at the end of the evening service.
Every week (on Tuesdays, after Vespers) there is a prayer service with an akathist.
There are many testimonies of grace-filled help through prayers to St. right Alexy - both of old times and modern ones. The temple continues to record and collect such evidence.
