Temple of Maron the Hermit is a temple of the Russian Orthodox Church in Starye Panekh. The temple is located on Yakimanka, in the famous district of Moscow.

It is famous for the fact that it was there, in 1885, that the first parochial school in Moscow was opened.

The Temple of St. Maron the Hermit arose in the small town of Babi

The Temple of St. Maron the Hermit arose in Babii Gorodok. A long time ago, during the reign of Prince Dmitry Donskoy, during the invasion of Khan Tokhtamysh, about a hundred Russian women fled. They fled from the Horde's balls with the hope of being saved within the walls of the Kremlin.

The construction of the temple of Maron the Hermit took place during the time of Grand Duke Dmitry Donskoy, who was then fighting the Horde troops. At this time, the women ran to escape. It is in honor that Babii Town is named

But the voivode, who defended the city, did not let the women through, fearing that by letting too many people in, he would burden the fortress in the event of a siege.

The poor women ran into the forest, made a wooden fortress, surrounding themselves with earth piled on top. This is how they were able to hold the siege for three days. Tokhtamysh, having reached the Kremlin, took up the rich booty, and did not pay any attention to those hiding in the “Woman’s Town”. Defenseless women were saved.

In fact, this story can be seen as an indication of the future of this place, where, by the grace of the Lord, in future centuries people will be able to withstand the onslaught of the enemy of the faith of Christ.

And it can also be regarded as a place of standing in the truth of God for those who want to preserve themselves in faith and truth.

The Maron church was built on this very spot. This event occurred during the reign of Mikhail Fedorovich Roman. According to some sources, the date of this significant event is 1642, and according to others, 1640. The year 1640 is mentioned in the Patriarchal Salary Book.

But the exact date of construction is not known. At first the temple was built wooden, and it had one altar - sacred in honor of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

At that time the church and clergy were very poor. After the opening of the parish, even after 45 years there were only 5 courtyards, except for the priest’s courtyard. Because of the poverty, Patriarch Joachim ordered that no tax be collected from the church.

Patriarch Joachim - allowed not to collect taxes from the temple of Maron the Desert due to the poverty of the parish

Gradually the building fell into disrepair, and there were no parishioners willing to maintain the temple in proper condition. This continued roughly until 1727.

In 1727, a decree was issued to build another chapel in honor of Maron, the Hermit of Syria

Then a decree was issued on the construction of another chapel at the temple, and its consecration in honor of Maron, the Hermit of Syria. A little later, the temple itself began to be named after this chapel.

In 1727, it was decided to build a chapel in honor of Maron the Hermit, the Elder of Syria

It still remains unclear why they decided to consecrate the throne in honor of the Syrian elder. But according to multiple assumptions, it can be calculated that at that time the icon of Saint Maron the Hermit had already been painted, and most likely it was revered by believers, so it became possible to build a chapel in honor of this saint.

People resorted to the help of this saint in illnesses not only spiritual, but also physical. In one old printed canon there is a service of St. Maroi. It can be assumed that Ancient Rus' was very fond of this Syrian ascetic.

But, unfortunately, the construction of a new aisle did not bring any improvements. The church still continued to decay and deteriorate. Seeing the deplorable state of the temple, and the fact that there was no one to help, the priest of the temple decided to turn to higher authorities.

In 1812, the temple of Maron the Hermit was desecrated and robbed

The temple lived a calmer and more even life until 1812. In the year of the enemy invasion, the temple was desecrated and robbed. Then he found himself in the zone of a terrible fire. All the wooden buildings around the church burned out. The temple itself suffered very little damage.

The number of parishioners has decreased sharply. The Divine Liturgy was not celebrated in the church. Archpriest Vasily Simeonov reported to the bishop about the consecration of the temple. After this, the church was assigned to the neighboring church in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. This continued for five whole years, until in 1818 the temple began to be revived again.

That year, Bishop Augustine received a petition informing him that the temple had been repaired. It was signed by the Lepeshkin merchants. It can be assumed that it was with their help that the temple again became an independent parish.

The Lepeshkin merchants provided assistance in the construction of the temple of Maron the Hermit after the desecration.

A lot of benefits for serving the temple were given to the Lepeshkin family. They covered three areas at once: construction work in the temple, taking care of the interior decoration of the temple, and also works of mercy.

In 1831, Vasily Lepeshkin wrote a petition to Metropolitan Philaret of Moscow, asking for permission to build another chapel in the church. Permission was received.

In 1841 the temple was restored both inside and outside. Its appearance was also changed. For his diligent and useful work for the temple, Nikolai Lepeshkin was awarded the Order of St. Stanislav, third degree.

In 1885, the first of the parochial schools in Moscow was opened at the temple.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the church was greatly oppressed by the Soviet government, which came to power at that time

The beginning of the 20th century left a big mark on church society. During the First World War, an infirmary was opened at the temple, where treatment and rehabilitation of the wounded took place.

Also, with joint efforts, repairs were made in the temple. The Soviet government increasingly did not allow the church to operate. In 1919, a certain agreement was imposed, according to which 30 parishioners were to accept religious buildings from the Moscow council for free use. The terms of the agreement included the preservation of national property. This is how the house of God became the “national treasure” of the Soviet republic.

After their temple, a huge amount of valuables were confiscated. The temple was nevertheless closed in 1930. From the closed church, many parishioners took icons, some church utensils, books, lamp oil, in order to at least save and protect something.

This is exactly what the temple of Maron the Hermit looked like after the Soviet government handed it over for various purposes.

After 1930, the temple passed from hand to hand. For some time it was owned by a technical school for the fat industry, as well as by hydrostroy companies and many others. Attempts were even made to demolish the temple and build an institute of civil engineers, but Soviet mismanagement saved it from doing so.

The Temple of Maron the Hermit was in terrible condition. After handing it over to the believers, a terrible picture opened before them - mutilated floors, dirt, dust, puddles of machine oil, garbage, and that’s not all

Rector of the Patriarchal Compound of the Church of St. Innocent of Moscow in Beskudnikov

Archpriest Mikhail Dudko

The temple was returned to believers in 1992, and its restoration began in 1993

The temple was returned to believers only in 1992. In 1993, the temple began to be restored again. When the parishioners entered the temple for the first time, a terrible picture was revealed to their eyes. Disfigured floors, dirt, dust, puddles of machine oil, garbage, bottles and cigarette butts lying around.

Since that year, restoration work has been carried out in the temple under the leadership of the rector of the temple, Alexander Marchenkov. In 2001, the Temple of Maron the Hermit was noted as the winner in the competition for the best results in the restoration and reconstruction of ancient architectural monuments.

Currently, there is a Sunday school at the temple. Children are divided into groups according to age characteristics. For a long time, such a tradition has developed in Sunday school: after the service during Sunday school classes, all the children pray for the sick and benefactors of the school. They also remember their deceased parishioners.

This is what the Temple of Maron the Hermit looks like now after restoration and repair work. There is a Sunday school and a youth club at the church

There is also a youth club at the temple. It is also worth noting that at the temple there are regency singing courses, which have three branches.

The temple has an official website. The schedule of services changes every month. You can find it in a special section with the schedule.
