Tandem twister and spinner

What is twister

A twister is a silicone bait in the form of a ribbed cylinder, on one side of which there is a crescent-shaped elastic tail.

It resembles an exotic fish with a lush tail. It is the tail that plays the main attracting role when the spotted predator is hunting. During the retrieving process, it actively wriggles, thereby causing an aggressive reaction from the pike and encouraging it to attack the rubber nozzle as if it were real prey.

Twister characteristics:

  1. Consists of a body and a tail.
  2. The surface of the body can be smooth, grooved, or consisting of individual ring-shaped segments connected by a thin central part. When retrieving, they create additional vibrations and noises that attract predatory fish located at a great distance.
  3. They can be edible or inedible, with different flavors, colors, degrees of transparency and silicone modifications.

Fishing for pike with a twister is characterized by a simple technique for installing baits and a fairly simple wiring process, which is very important for novice fishermen.

Where and when to apply

A popular bait that is used by both beginners and professionals, it makes it possible to catch pike with a spinning rod in a variety of conditions:

  • in small and large rivers;
  • in shallow waters and at depth, as well as in places with differences in depth;
  • in lakes and ponds;
  • reservoirs.

It performs effectively both in still water and in currents. The main thing is to choose the right wiring and equipment.

In addition, fishing for pike with a twister is effective at any time of the year. Active hunting for the toothy predator begins in early spring and continues until the reservoirs are covered with ice. Although for fans of winter pike fishing, a twister is the main equipment in their arsenal.

What can you catch?

Twisters are universal baits that can attract not only pike, but also perch, pike perch, trout, catfish, burbot, asp and other freshwater predatory and peaceful fish. Fishing is most productive during times of high fish activity. Therefore, before fishing with silicone bait, it is advisable to find out at what periods each type of fish begins to feed most greedily.

Spinner spinners with wide blade

Date: May 23, 2021 | 679

Rotating spoons can have different ratios of length and width of the petal. A significant share of the total volume of such spinners is occupied by spinners with a wide blade. If we talk about the generally accepted classification from Mepps, we can note the wide, almost round petals of Aglia spinners, as well as a medium-width option - Comet. Such baits perform well in still water and slow currents. There may be exceptions when they are caught on fast rivers and streams, moving along the flow. So spinners are very popular, and in a wide variety of size and color variations. So let’s look at several catchy models of pinwheels with such petals.

Mepps Aglia №2

  • Weight: 4.5g

Mepps Aglia spinner No. 2 is a medium-sized spinner. The wide petal of the Aglia spinners deviates when moving at a significant angle from the axis (about 60 degrees). The spinner is stubborn and creates powerful vibration in the water. This is a positive characteristic, thanks to which the Mepps Aglia No. 2 spoon can attract predatory fish from a long distance.

Mepps Aglia No. 2 spinners are mainly used in areas of reservoirs with weak currents, or even in standing water.

Aglia No. 2 is a universal rotating spoon. This spinner is used to successfully catch pike of various sizes, large perch, and pike perch (when it reaches relatively shallow places). Often a chub with an asp is also pecked on a deuce, in niches, near the steep banks of the river, where the current is slow or reversed.

Mepps Aglia №3

  • Weight: 6.5g

Spinner Mepps Aglia No. 3 is a medium spinner from the Aglia family. The wide blade of this spinner deviates strongly from its axis and creates powerful vibration. The Mepps Aglia No. 3 spinner is designed primarily for fishing in still water and very weak currents. On the third Aglia, pike (including large ones) are successfully caught, as well as medium and large perch.

Mepps are legendary spinners. Few of our spinning players are not familiar with these French spinners. These lures are not distinguished by the sophistication of their parts and assembly, but they are always assembled with very high quality. And most importantly, Mepps Aglia catches fish perfectly!

Mepps Comet No. 2

  • Weight: 4.5g

The Mepps Comet No. 2 spinner is truly an all-rounder. The spoon is medium, not large, but not light either. Comet No. 2 works great in fairly fast currents, in medium currents and in still water.

The bright spotted color of the Mepps Comet No. 2 spoon perfectly attracts predators. The catch will include: pike, perch, asp, large chub, ide.

Experienced spinning anglers have long adopted Mepps spinners of various models. These baits are evidenced by many years of successful operation on our reservoirs, excellent catchability, excellent performance characteristics (start up instantly, work even at very slow retrieve speeds) and reasonable prices.

Mepps Black Fury №3

  • Weight: 6.5g

Mepps Black Fury No. 3 is a very catchy spinner. Mepps are generally a family of spinners, champions in catchability. Blackfury No. 3 stands out for its versatility. This spoon works great both in still water and in strong currents, catching large and medium-sized pike, good perch, as well as pike perch and catfish, at night on the riffles.

The contrasting coloring of Mepps Black Fury No. 3 spinners is clearly visible to fish, even in very muddy water. Dots of bright, fluorescent colors are placed on a black background. When rotated, the dots turn into concentric circles, which seem to attract a predator, often better than classic polished lures with a metallic sheen.

Balzer Colonel Z 3g

  • Weight: 3g

The Balzer company, famous for its inexpensive and high-quality fishing rods and feeder reels, has also released a series of spinners. Balzer Colonel Z is a light turntable, characterized by instant winding, build quality, and a variety of colors.

These spinners are good for catching perch and trout. They also catch chub, ide, and large rudd.

Savage Gear Rotex Spinner 2 5.5g

  • Weight: 5.5g

Savage Gear Rotex Spinner 5.5g is an original spinner with a core. The spinner has a rather wide petal. There is a front sight on the tee. It stabilizes the play of the spinner and complements the quality of the workmanship – excellent. The spinner flies far enough, starts up instantly and plays consistently on a slow retrieve - everything that is required from a high-quality spinner.

Savage Gear Rotex Spinner 5.5g is used mainly in standing water. But, you can also fish on the current, in niches near the banks, in places with a slow current, casting across, with “demolition” wiring, or upstream.

The size of the spoon is quite small, and it can be considered universal. A wide variety of fish bite on it: pike, perch, asp, chub, ide, large trout, and other salmon.

Smith Niakis 48/3

  • Weight: 3g

Smith Niakis 48/3 is one of the most famous spinners in the World. The quality and catchability of this spinner are well known to experienced fishermen. The original shape of the spoon provides a number of advantages. In principle, the classic rotating petal on the clamp works very well. The core of the spinner is shaped like a fish, which means it additionally attracts fish and is eccentric. This, together with the built-in swivel, does a great job of keeping the line from twisting.

The action of the spinner is so easy and dynamic that fishing legends are made about its catchability. The Smith Niakis spinner works great on a variety of currents, on a variety of styles and directions of retrieves. Despite its compact size, the spoon is quite weighty and is not thrown to the surface by rapid currents. Instant activation of the petal and stable operation when crossing river streams of different speeds are the qualities that experienced chub fishermen and trout fishing enthusiasts especially value in this lure.

Smith Niakis 48/3 is the lightest spinner in the series, only 3g. This turntable is rightfully considered the most universal. In addition to the usual prey, such as trout, chub, ide, asp, perch, any peaceful fish can be caught with a three-gram Niakis: rudd, large roach, bream, etc.

Abu Garcia Active Spinner 7g

  • Weight: 7g

Abu Garcia Active Spinner 7g – spinner. This is a very specific bait in the class of spinners with a core. Firstly, the core of the spinner itself has a very unusual shape. Instead of the usual cylinders or bullet shapes, the core is decorated to look like a fish. The eye is clearly drawn, with protrusions imitating fins. Such a core, in addition to being especially attractive to fish, has an irregular shape and acts as an eccentric, preventing excessive twisting of the fishing line by the spinner. In addition, this asymmetrical core geometry increases the vibration from the spoon, which makes it possible to attract predators from long distances.

Otherwise, the Abu Garcia Active Spinner has the classic design inherent in all spinners. Thus, a rather wide petal rotates on the axis of the spinner, being placed on a clamp and resting against the beads. The petals of these spinners are available in a rich color palette. Many have bright or holographic coatings. The tee of the bait is decorated with a fly. This increases the number of perch bites, and also makes the spoon more attractive to fish such as chub, ide, asp, and salmon.

Abu Garcia Active Spinner weighing 7g is a small spinner that is well suited for catching medium-sized pike, perch, as well as ide and chub in rivers.

Panther Martin is a well-known Italian company, a manufacturer of no less famous spinners (rotating spinners) without a clamp. The essence of such spinning baits is that the petal of the spinner is put on an axle without a clamp, and with a directly drilled hole on a wire axle. Such properties of the spinner provide interesting opportunities, in particular, playing on the fall. Panther Martin spinners are interesting lures that belong in the box of any serious spinner. Panther Martin lures are assembled by hand. This is another fact that is a plus for the quality and authority of these spinners.

Panther Martin Deluxe 2

  • Weight: 1.8g

Panther Martin Deluxe 2 is an excellent ultra-light spinner bait with an original design. This spinner has a special petal structure, mounted directly on the wire axis of the spinner. This design allows the lure to play when falling, with a weakened fishing line, in addition to the traditional game on a uniform retrieve.

The Panther Martin Deluxe 2 spinner has a machined brass core that allows you to cast the spinner over very long distances with a light spinning rod.

The Panther Martin Deluxe lure is used for fishing in small fast rivers and medium-sized rivers with medium currents. The bait works very stably. They use it to catch trout, chub, perch and various peaceful fish, for example: rudd, ide, bream, etc.

Panther Martin Regular 6

  • Weight: 7g

Panther Martin Regular 6 is an original large-sized spinner. According to the usual Mepps numbering, the sixth Panther Martin size corresponds to approximately the 4th Mepps.

The Panther Martin Regular 6 spinner is a spinner with a core, but not quite an ordinary one. The main difference from classic turntables is the shape of the petal and the way it fits on the axis of rotation. The petal is oval in shape, has a special bend and hole. It is through the hole, directly, without any clamps, that the petal sits on the wire axis and rests against the bead, which facilitates rotation.

The bait starts up perfectly and works stably. In addition to the traditional game on a uniform retrieve, spinners with this design also play on a vertical drop with a weakened fishing line. This makes it possible to successfully fish small windows in aquatic vegetation and clearings among snags with such spoons.

The spinner is distinguished by a massive bullet-shaped lead core, which makes the bait particularly long-range and stable in operation. The core is painted in bright colors to better attract fish.

Basically, the Panther Martin Regular 6 spinner is designed for fishing in fast mountain rivers, for catching large salmon fish: brown trout, salmon, taimen, lenok, etc. Pike also bite quite well on it.

Features of catching pike with a twister

The rules for choosing bait will help you achieve a decent catch.

Twister size for pike

For pike fishing, twisters 2.5-4 inches (6.3 - 10.1 cm) long are usually used. Such baits attract both medium-sized and small-sized pike well. For targeted fishing for trophy fish, take a larger bait - more than 4 inches (from 10 cm).

How is the length of a twister measured?

Manufacturers usually indicate the size of the body with the tail unexpanded.

Hook, number

Hooks marked 3/0, 4/0 or 5/0 are suitable for pike.

To mount soft artificial baits made of silicone or rubber, offset hooks, which were invented in the first half of the 20th century, are increasingly used. And now they are very popular among experienced fishermen. The non-standard shape allows the hook to be securely hidden in the bait, thanks to which the twister passes through thickets and snags without clinging to them.

When choosing a hook, you need to attach it to the bait. In this case, the tip should coincide with the middle of the body, and the height of the bend of the offset should not exceed the height of the body, otherwise the twister will cling to obstacles during wiring.

About

TOP 5 best twisters for pike

There are a variety of brands, sizes, colors and shapes of silicone twisters for pike fishing on sale. Sometimes it is difficult to choose a truly effective bait, especially for a novice spinning fisherman. But among the many models, there are those that have already been well tested by fishermen and have proven themselves to be excellent:

Relax Twister 4″

Twister with active game. Suitable for fishing both on the river and on the lake. Despite its simplicity and low cost, it has excellent catchability. The tail begins to oscillate even at the slowest speeds and with light loads. Durable silicone can withstand more than one swift bite. In addition, when using uniform wiring, twisters of this series create a characteristic acoustic effect.

Homunculures Hightailer by Pontoon 21

The baits are made of soft edible and flavored silicone, they play even with the slowest retrieve. Used on medium and large lakes and rivers with small currents. Inside each twister there is a channel that allows you to fix the hook more accurately and reliably. The only drawback of the bait is that it is severely damaged by pike teeth.

Gary Yamamoto Single Tail Grub 4″

The series is characterized by the strength of elastic silicone, a more rounded body and a wide movable tail that actively vibrates with any type of wiring. The elastic material of the Single Tail Grub model withstands predator bites well. It is a universal bait, as it can be used on different installations.

About

Technologies and methods of twister installation

There are several successful ways to attach such a bait to create catchy fishing gear. The most popular are:

  • installation based on a jig head;
  • spaced twister rigs;
  • non-snacking lure mounts;
  • hinged mounting method.

The technique of spaced rigs is that the weight and the bait must be moved away from each other. In this case, the silicone gets more free space and allows the person with the rod to perform measured, slow retrieves.

When fishing in more difficult conditions, you need to choose equipment that does not get caught on obstacles. With this type of installation, you can confidently fish rocky areas of the bottom, snags, and reservoirs with abundant vegetation. It is better to attach the nozzle in tandem with an offset hook, then it can easily pass through difficult places. With such equipment, the tip is hidden in silicone, and with a successful bite it is released and dug into the predator’s mouth.

To properly attach a twister attachment to an offset hook, you need to select an offset of the required length. Then pierce the bait through the “mouth” from the head and bring the tip out into the “neck” area. The twister is pulled to the bend and smoothly brought to the eye. Having unrolled the hook, carefully fold the body of the bait and sharply pierce it. The sting is brought out at the top of the nozzle and “sunk” in silicone. At the last stage, the bait with a sharp offset hook is attached to a sinker of the required weight.

How to make your own chatterbox for fishing

The most popular (even beginners and novice spinning anglers can handle it) way of mounting twisters is to mount them on a jig head - the bait is placed on a hook rigidly fixed in a weight. Twister jig heads come in the shape of a bullet, horseshoe, fish head, and boot. The most common are spherical. Such equipment is not difficult and provides the structure with the necessary rigidity of the connection.

The technology of hinged combination is that the twister is adapted to a single (you can use a double, triple - as you like) hook and attached to a weight called a “Cheburashka”. This fastening gives the bait a high level of freedom, allowing you to cast it to a maximum distance. The twister is attached to the weight with a clasp or winding ring. The disadvantage of this method is the possible overlap through the leash. In this case, the wiring will be less effective. To avoid unnecessary misfire, before inserting the twister, you need to slow down the slippery line by touching the spool with your fingers.

Which is better: twister or vibrotail

The types of silicone baits differ not only in appearance, but also produce different effects when wiring. The vibrotail visually looks more like a fish, and the tail is not crescent-shaped, like that of a twister, but in the form of a dense snout located perpendicular to the body. When retrieved, this bait causes oscillations in the water of lower frequency but greater amplitude. Such a game attracts the toothy one faster than the high-frequency vibrations of a twister.

Photo: Twister and vibrotail - the main differences

If we compare the adaptability of baits to different fishing conditions, then twisters have several advantages. For example, when casting long distances from the shore, they will be more effective, since they have better flight properties. In addition, twisters mounted in the form of non-hooking hooks are well suited for fishing in places with snags and lush underwater vegetation.

We can conclude that most likely a spinner will need both types of bait for pike fishing. It is important to correctly determine which silicone is needed in a particular case.

Twisters are easy-to-use lures that are well suited for learning the basics of pike fishing. In addition, they are very versatile and popular among experienced spinners. They bring a large number of bites in a variety of conditions and at any time of the year.
