How to choose a carp rod: tips and tricks

Of all types of fishing, carp fishing stands out. This fish is large and powerful. Once hooked, he resists desperately and never gives up. Fishing it out is not easy, which is why this process captivates the fisherman entirely and brings considerable pleasure. Often the struggle can end in the equipment breaking. Therefore, correctly selected gear means half the success. The editors of the Yanashla website offer a review of “The best carp fishing rods for 2021”, compiled according to customer opinions and expert ratings.

A little history

Carp fishing is a special type of fishing in fresh water for carp and grass carp. There are three types of fishing:

  • amateur;
  • trophy;
  • sports.

Important! Carp fishing is necessarily called modern fishing, where the so-called is necessarily used. “hair rigging” and the “catch and release” principle is strictly observed.

The goal of such fishing is to catch trophy specimens without causing injury to the fish. Here, for the fisherman, fish is not a food product or an object of sale, but an equal rival who must be defeated without taking his life. Over time, these principles began to be followed in other types of fishing, for example, catching predators with a spinning rod.

In time immemorial, the ancestors of modern carps settled in the Caspian Sea, from where they spread across the Black and Aral Seas, after which they began to spread along the Danube bed to the west and east. Historians believe that starting from the 22nd century, artificial breeding was carried out by Christian religious communities. The creation of artificial reservoirs began to breed this type of fish for food. In the 15th century in England, among far from poor Englishmen, it became fashionable to set up carp ponds.

In the middle of the last century, English fishermen began to create a science about this fishing, collecting and summarizing in works and treatises the skills acquired over years of struggle with the dexterous and strong representative of fresh water bodies. In a short time, English ponds were overflowing with these fish, which were increasingly increasing in size. The gear changed accordingly. Bamboo fishing rods were replaced by hollow fiberglass ones, and reels were improved. The arsenal of carp anglers is being enriched with bite alarms.

The desire to catch more fish is gradually replaced by the desire to catch a larger trophy. Accordingly, the number of slips and damage caused by hooks has increased. In the fight against these negative manifestations, a new tackle was born, called the hair rig. Through experiments in a large aquarium, it was found that the fish sees the fishing line and bait, gets scared and does not follow the bait.

Important! The meaning of the new method is that the bait is not placed on a hook, but is tied to it using a fishing line that is much thinner than the main one.

The result exceeded all expectations. The effectiveness of carp fishing with the new gear has increased by an order of magnitude. Today in Russia this is an official type of fishing sport and has been included in the corresponding register since 2006.

What spinning rods are used for carp fishing?

To catch carp, you need to use a powerful and durable fishing rod so that it does not break during the process of landing fish. In general, in addition to specialized types of spinning rods, spinning rods for catching predators can also be used to catch carp. The main requirements that fishermen place on carp spinning rods:

1. A carp fishing rod must be powerful and durable. The raw materials used for production (preferably fiberglass) must be of high quality. The ability to catch fish and keep the form intact depends on this; 2. The length of the spinning rod must be more than 320 centimeters. This size will provide a good casting distance. This is important in carp fishing, because carp fish are cautious, and it is almost impossible to catch them off the coast. 3. The special handle of a carp spinning rod differs from a regular handle. It is spread across the butt of the instrument. One part of it is located behind the reel seat, and the second is where the spinning rod ends. This type of handle helps to make long casts. 4. Size of pass rings. Rings for a carp rod should be large (up to 50 millimeters in diameter). Thus, the cord will move freely, and the load will be distributed evenly throughout the spinning rod.

All this needs to be remembered when choosing a fishing rod for carp fishing. After all, carp is a specific fish and catching it requires knowledge and preparedness. Also, when choosing a carp spinning rod, you need to know the main characteristics of the reservoir where you plan to fish. This is very important to know, since the working qualities of the spinning rod depend on the depth and congestion of the reservoir.

What types of carp rods are there?

Before choosing, you need to get to know the item better and have some idea about its characteristics. But first, let's agree on the terms.

Important! In professional slang, a fishing rod is called a blank or a whip. The latter is apparently due to the similarity of the movement during casting with the movements of the whip used to drive horses.

Let's start with the fact that experts distinguish between three types of gear:

  • basic;
  • marker;
  • spodous

The main ones, also known as carp fish, are used directly to perform basic operations. They throw bait with it and land fish.

Auxiliary

Used for scouting fishing spots. With them, they “throw” the reservoir in different places, studying its features.

After the fishing place has been chosen, it needs to be fed, i.e. deliver bait to a certain point. For this purpose, auxiliary gear is also used, which is called marker and spod.

Main classes of carp rods

In the question of how to choose a spinning rod for carp fishing, their conditional division into three main categories (classes) will help:

  1. Light class fishing rods. As a rule, these are blanks with a relatively small test power for this type of fishing (2.5 - 3.2 lb) with a length of 10 to 13 feet. Translated into our metric it means: recommended fishing line test – from 1.1 kg to 1.45 kg, rod length – from 3 m to 3.9 m. Designed for fishing in small reservoirs with a relatively clean bottom with a casting distance of up to 100 m.
  2. Middle class. A middle-class carp spinning rod has the following parameters: test power from 3 to 3.5 lb, length can be up to 15 feet (4.5 m). These are the most practical and popular fishing rods, designed for fishing at distances of up to 120 meters in various bodies of water. The choice of a carp rod for beginners should be made from the forms of this class.
  3. Heavy class rods have test values above 3.5 lb. They are designed to catch the largest specimens at extreme distances in a wide variety of fishing conditions. If the question arises about which rod to choose for catching trophy carp, then the choice must be made from the forms in this category.

Expert opinion

Knipovich Nikolai Mikhailovich

Zoologist, hydrobiologist. I am interested in fishing at a professional level.

Interesting! Records for bait casting distance are set using rods of this particular class. The world record now stands at just under 300 meters.

Separately, it is worth mentioning how to choose a carp fishing rod for long-distance casting . Here the main role is played by the physical abilities of the angler and the distance between the handles. To correctly select such a form, you should: grab the lower handle with your left hand, and the upper handle with your right hand, after which you need to lift the rod above your head with outstretched arms. If the angle between your hands is around 45 degrees, it will work, but if not, choose another blank for maximum casting.

It is also worth noting the category of carp rods designed for fishing with float tackle. Such forms are equipped with a float controller, several weights and a small feeder with hooks. They are used when fishing in the coastal zone, or from boats, in snags or overgrown areas of the reservoir. They have test values lb to 2.25 lb. Their length can vary from 11 to 14 feet .

Gear selection criteria

Each option has its own design features that need to be studied in order to know how to choose the right one. The catalogs discuss two types of structures: telescopic and plug-in. Let's consider both options.

Plug rod

The tackle is assembled from two, three or five parts on bushings. People call this connection “father - mother”. They are distinguished by a serious margin of safety. Used as the main one.

Telescopic tackle

Transformable or extendable. Each subsequent section (from the handle to the top) is smaller in diameter than the previous one. In the assembled position, all sections are hidden in the first one. In the working position – they are extended to the working length and fixed. The design is compact and mobile. These are its main advantages.

Selecting gear by length

Since this sport came to us from good old England, the length of the tackle is measured in feet.

On a note! Foot, in English - leg. This length measure gets its name from the average size of a person’s foot. One foot is equal to 30.38 cm.

There are three main lengths of a carp rod:

  • 12 feet, more suitable for anglers whose height does not exceed 175 cm;
  • 12.6 feet – for those whose height has exceeded 175 cm;
  • 13 feet is also used by tall athletes to perform long casts.

When choosing the length, remember that the above tips are advisory in nature. Here you should rely more on your own sensations from the gear. If the tackle “feels in your hand”, it is yours.

Carp tackle test

In our case, the word “test” does not mean trial or test. This is a characteristic of the tackle, the same as its length. It indicates the flexibility of the upper part of the whip. It is measured in pounds, this is an English unit of weight. One pound is equal to 0.45359 kg.

Here's what we need to know about the test:

  • testing of the tackle is carried out with a load, increasing it until the moment when its end, bent, makes an angle of 90° with the straight part;
  • this weight is called dough;
  • the size of the test load will tell the owner how strong his tackle is and what weight of trophy he can fish out;
  • if the test is small, the whip is considered soft;
  • Hard tackle with a large cast allows you to cast the bait further and catch larger fish.

Fishing conditions can vary greatly, so gear must be selected taking into account the fisherman’s preferences for a certain type of reservoir, casting range and the physical ability to fish for very large specimens. It's better to have several different sticks. This expands the possibilities of obtaining trophies.

Selection of gear formation

Action is the speed at which the curved end of a structure bends under a load. Depends on the rigidity of the tackle and the weight of the trophy. There are three types of structure:

  1. A fast action is one in which the curved end of the fishing rod quickly straightens. This is a characteristic feature of hard, long-range whips.
  2. Slow or parabolic is a system in which the whip slowly returns to its original shape. This whip is easier to control. It smoothes out the sharp jerks of large fish.
  3. Average or semi-parabolic is a certain average rate of return of the curved end of the tackle to its initial position. The option is to some extent universal.

The fisherman decides which system to choose based on fishing conditions, characteristics of the reservoir and personal preferences. In any case, choose the gear that is more convenient to work with. It is possible that before you find your fishing rod, you will have to go through more than one option.

Auxiliary rods

Let's look at the fishing rods that are used to “reconnaissance” the bottom of the reservoir and bait the selected place.

Selecting a Marker Form

To increase the effectiveness of fishing, you need to study in detail the habitat of the carp and, first of all, the topography of the bottom of the reservoir. This is done with a marker whip. Do you know how sailors determined the depth under the keel in the days of sailing ships? They used a lot - a long rope with marks (marks) at a certain distance in meters or feet and a weight at the end. The lottoy (sailor) threw the device into the water and counted the marks until the moment the load hit the bottom.

A marker whip works the same way. Only marks are applied to the rod. Markers are most often selected in lengths of 12.6 - 13 feet. They must be sensitive enough to feel it touching the bottom when casting a load. The length of the fishing line that comes off the reel is measured using the marks on the form. This is how the depth of the reservoir is determined.

How to choose a spod model

With this tackle, bait is thrown onto the favorite fishing spot. Length doesn't matter. This can be a 12 to 13 foot blank. The main thing is that it can withstand the load of feed. Of course, you can use a carp blank as a spod or marker. It’s just not very convenient and will bring some discomfort to the process of hunting for a trophy.

Experienced carp anglers have an arsenal of two main sticks and one spod and one marker each. This is called the basic carp fishing set. Professionals use four carp blanks, a spod and a marker. For a beginner, the basic set is enough.

What to pay attention to

It is better for a beginning carp angler to try with a rod that is easy to control, a smaller test rod, with a slow or medium action. In addition, experienced fishermen advise:

  1. Purchase gear from the best manufacturers, the popularity of whose models is deserved by their high quality and positive customer reviews.
  2. You shouldn’t buy frankly cheap samples, but it also doesn’t make sense for a beginner to buy the most expensive product.
  3. When choosing options, be sure to take into account the size of your height.
  4. You should get used to working with a spod and a marker right away, from your first fishing trip.
  5. Don't forget about the "catch and release" rule of carp fishing.

In order not to make mistakes when choosing, you should listen to the advice and recommendations of experienced fishermen, determine at what price you are willing to purchase gear, and evaluate the characteristics of the product offered.

What are the differences between carp rods?

Externally, the carp blank resembles a classic spinning rod. It is equipped with a reel seat and guides. Plus, the length of individual models is the same as that of spinning rods. Therefore, people sometimes call these rods carp spinning rods.

They can be distinguished from classic models by the shape of the handle. Carp products have two of them. They are spaced along the holder: one at the base of the butt, the other slightly higher at the reel seat. This ensures a comfortable grip with your hands, since the form is long and weighty.

[THERE IS AN ANSWER] Which fishing line is better for carp

In addition, carp fishing rods have a larger diameter of guide rings. They also have special markings. The test is measured in pounds (lb), length - feet (ft), instead of the usual metric system.

How to choose a carp fishing rod

Test is a parameter showing what maximum load the form can withstand. The choice of a specific model depends on what body of water you will be fishing on and from what distance. The stronger the current, the more difficult the bottom, the higher the test should be. Conversely, low-test carp rods are suitable for fishing in a quiet reservoir with a clean bottom when casting close.

If you are fishing for small fish when casting up to 100 m, choose a product with a test weight of 1.75-3.0 lb. If you catch large carp at a long distance, choose a more powerful form. The situation is the same if there are algae, driftwood, or strong currents in the reservoir. Then the optimal test rod will be 3.25-3.75 lb.

Remember, the more powerful the carp spinning rod, the more skill you need to successfully catch fish. For a novice fisherman, it is better to choose a low-test fishing rod. Practice catching carp in clear water on a short cast.

All fishing rods are divided into working and auxiliary. There are such types of the first of them:

Fishing rods for carp are made from composites, graphite or modern plastic. These are durable, flexible and lightweight materials. Inexpensive tackle is made from fiberglass.

All fishing rods are divided into working and auxiliary. There are such types of the first of them:

  • Universal (Multirange). These rods are the most common. Their test is 2-3 Lb. Used at all depths and types of reservoirs. Using a universal bait, a bait weighing 60-90 g is thrown to a length of up to 100-120 m.
  • A parabolic rod or a fishing rod with a slow action (Slim). Used for working at short and medium distances up to 70 m. Their blank completely dampens strong jerks of large fish.
  • Long-range. Tackle for extended distances has a fast action (Fast) and a length of up to 4 m. It throws bait weighing up to 180 g at a distance of up to 150 m.
  • A shortened rod with a length of 1.7-2.7 m. Convenient for boat fishing or fishing in tight spaces at distances of up to 30 m. This rod casts bait weighing up to 70 g.
  • Feeder. These rods have good range (up to 150 m) and sufficient strength to retrieve large prey. The length of the blank is 360-450 cm, it is capable of throwing equipment weighing 100-250 g.

The most common auxiliary rods are marker rods. Before feeding and catching prey, the fisherman needs to know the depth, structure and topography of the bottom in the working area. This is done using a marker rod. It is equipped with a special sinker and float. The test form is 2.7-3.5 units.

By design, gear is divided into telescopic and plug-in:

  1. When folded, the first type is convenient to transport. It is convenient to set up a telescopic rod in advance, without haste and without errors. Disadvantages: inconvenient, thick handle, reduced casting length due to the rings located on top.
  2. Plug gear consists of sections connected by an elbow. They have handles that fit comfortably in your hand. They can make the most distant and accurate casts. The tip of the rod is sensitive to the bite. Disadvantages: high cost and large length of the disassembled structure.

The form is not the most convenient for transportation; the length when folded is as much as 2 meters. In all other respects the form is perfect. Easy to assemble (2 segments), well balanced, and throws almost beyond the horizon.

Where can I buy

The best option would be to purchase in a specialized store. In this case, you can examine the product with your own eyes, try how the stick fits in your hand, and fully appreciate its merits. If this option is not possible, it is convenient to order a purchase online in an online store, having first studied its detailed description.

AliExpress

Those who are looking for budget options can be advised to buy a carp blank from AliExpress. This site sells goods from China. You should not treat them with disdain. “China to China” is different. Many well-known companies, in order to reduce the cost of their goods, have located production in the Middle Kingdom. For example, all gear from Fox is made in China. Avoid the cheapest whips so as not to run into a fake “one-day” one. “China” is better to choose more expensive.

High-quality gear is produced by Chinese companies Aiko. The sticks are produced in Korea and assembled in the Middle Kingdom. The average price is between 3500 - 5000 rubles.

Another Chinese gear manufacturer, Libao, is not inferior to Aiko. Her Tele Carp model is 3.6 m, has good characteristics: a telescope of five sections, 12 feet long, weighing 365 g, medium action, with a top test of 150 g. Quite suitable tackle for beginners. Price – within 1000 rubles.

What should you consider when choosing a carp fishing rod?

Rod length

The generally accepted unit for rod length is feet. There are three main lengths: 12 feet, 12.6 and 13 feet.

It is believed that a 13-foot rod is perfect for long casts on a large body of water, provided that your height is more than 175 cm. If you take a 12-foot rod, then it will be suitable for anglers with a height of up to 175 cm. But everything is individual!

The only advice here is: “the rod should fit into your hand.”

In our catalog, the length is measured in meters, using a filter, you can choose the rod for yourself. (1ft = 30.48 cm)

Rod test for carp

The test is the next parameter when choosing a fishing rod. Unit of measurement Pounds (lb). Let's figure out what a test is and how to choose it.

[THERE IS AN ANSWER] What is the best thickness of fishing line for carp?

The test is assigned to each rod after passing the load test. When the rod tip bends to 90 degrees, the weight required for this is the test of the rod. This number lets us understand how strong the rod is and how much weight it can withstand at maximum loads. The smaller the test, the softer the rod, but at the same time the casting range and the possibility of landing large fish decrease. The higher the test, the stiffer and longer-range the rod.

In the filter of our catalog you can also select the test you need.

Almost always, in the final version, you determine the rod test experimentally, selecting it for the weight that is more convenient for you to work with in specific conditions; it all depends on the situation.

Construction of a carp rod

Build another one of the important parameters of the rod. This is the time during which the form bends to a certain level under load. There are three main types:

Fast build

— the blank returns to its original position faster, such a rod is long-range, but more rigid.

Medium (Semi-parabolic)

- a kind of universal option.

Slow (Parabolic)

— the rod is easy to control and absorbs fish jerks well.

How to choose a system?

You select the system for certain fishing conditions, taking into account the size of the reservoirs where fishing will be carried out and the size of the expected trophies.

But it is especially important: Select those rods with which it will be more convenient for you to fish and with which you will have fun. Find a compromise between casting characteristics, sensitivity, and ability to hold fish when playing.

If you plan to fish at long distances using feeders and PVA bags, then the product must meet the appropriate test. The same applies to casting gear in snags and grassy areas. If the hooked fish rushes into the saving vegetation or snags, a rod with a weight of at least 3.25 LB will be able to turn it around.

How to choose a carp rod

Catching large carp is an activity for the intellectual. In order to relax on the water with great pleasure, it is important for the fisherman to choose a fishing rod for carp according to his parameters: height, grip width, physical strength. First of all, pay attention to the handles - they should fit comfortably in both hands at once. Then lift the form up - an angle of about 45 degrees should form between your hands.

Depending on where you plan to fish for carp, the rod's structure and test are determined. Only after this are the reels and fishing line selected.

Parabolic blanks are suitable for calm fishing in small and clean reservoirs where there is no strong current. The blank test is acceptable from 2 to 3 OZ, and the tensile strength is no more than 3 lb. Length - 12 to 13 ft. The downside of this rod is that it is difficult to cast heavy feeders and PVA bags of bait over long distances.

Beginning carp anglers can immediately purchase a medium-action fishing rod, the characteristics of which are closer to the professional form. At the same time, you can catch carp both in still water and in weak currents. Load test - 4.5 OZ. Tear test - 3.5 to 4 lb. Length can range from 13 to 14 ft.

Fast action blanks have a test from 4.5 to 6 OZ. These are long casting rods. Sports fishermen can throw a load over a distance of over 200 meters with such spinning rods.

By purpose and scope of application

Carp forms can be used for various purposes.

Basic rods. Area of use: amateur or professional fishing. We have already listed the main characteristics.

No serious carp fishing is complete without auxiliary equipment, which includes marker and spot rods.

Marker spinning rods

Purpose:

— choice of fishing spots;

— sounding the depths, checking the cleanliness of the bottom;

- throwing a marker - a special large float - to the feeding point.

Spot forms

These are powerful rods for ultra-long casting of heavy rocket feeders.

How to decide on a manufacturer

Let's start with the country where, in fact, the culture of carp fishing arose. English blanks are represented by top-end fishing rods from the brands Fox (models: Warrior, Gladiator and Ethos), Chumb, FreeSpirit, Grays.

A serious collection can be found at Shimano, which produces both expensive and economical rod options. The rating of the best forms is headed by the models Force Master, Catana, JoyCarp.

Germany can please you with reliable poles from the Balzer and Sportex factories.

Beginning carp anglers will appreciate spinning rods from the Korean company Banax.

The Russian manufacturer is represented by the Volzhanka brand. The company has 17 different forms just for carp fishing. The cost of equipping one rod is comparable to an economy class spinning rod. In the “Travel Concept” model range for the 120 gram test, the manufacturer uses im7 graphite and durable spigot joints of the knees.

Carp rods. Part 4.

Carp rods are special rods designed for carp fishing. They are characterized by great power, allowing you to cast heavy equipment a considerable distance from the shore (of course, provided you have the appropriate casting technique), and can cope with heavy loads when fishing for large trophy carp.

Carp fishing rods are divided into main (working) and auxiliary. The main ones include fishing rods, with the help of which the process of carp fishing is directly carried out; auxiliary ones include marker and spod carp rods, which perform very important functions in studying the characteristics of the fishing spot and feeding the fishing point.

Let's try to describe the main characteristics of working and auxiliary rods for carp fishing, which you need to know to understand the operation of these gears and which you need to take into account in order to understand how to choose a carp rod for yourself.

Working carp rods

With the help of working rods, equipment is cast and fish are landed. It is their characteristics, together with the casting technique, that will determine how far from the shore you can fish, and whether you will be able to bring a large, strong carp to the landing net. The right choice of fishing rods is very important, but there is no single right option: there are a huge number of high-quality and very high-quality fishing rods on the market that have all the necessary properties for flawless performance. Choosing your own fishing rod is always subjective. Experienced carp anglers often hear the expression “the rod fits into your hand.” In order to choose such a subjectively suitable rod, you need to have fishing experience behind you, which allows you to feel the work of rods and understand what exactly you want from your gear.

In the case of buying your first fishing rod, in my opinion, the main thing is simply not to make a mistake and not buy a low-quality item that can let you down at the most crucial moment. Therefore, I would not purchase carp rods from unknown manufacturers on the markets, but would try to calculate the time and money and purchase something from the budget lines of well-known manufacturers as the first rods. It also seems to me that buying a very expensive fishing rod right away, even if there is a financial opportunity for it, is unwise: when buying your first fishing rod, it is not yet clear what exact requirements you will place on it.

Rods such as Daiwa Black Widow, Shimano Alivio, Fox Warrior belong specifically to the budget segment and are suitable for a beginner in all respects. On various fishing forums they are most often recommended as the first rods. I have never heard of them letting their owners down, breaking down quickly and not coping with their functions.

So, what are the main characteristics of working carp rods?

Length. Since England is the birthplace of carp fishing, the length of carp rods is usually measured in feet. Traditionally, carp rods are available in lengths of 12 and 13 feet; there are also intermediate options of 12.6 feet. There are also short rod models up to 9 feet long. A twelve-foot carp rod is 3.6 meters long, and a thirteen-foot one is 3.9 meters long. The most common and versatile are 12 and 13 foot rods. Shorter models are designed for fishing in hard-to-reach places, for so-called “stalker” fishing.

The choice when purchasing your first gear is usually between 12 and 13 foot working rods. Which type of carp rod should you choose and why? Firstly, it is believed that a longer rod is more convenient to use for tall people. It has a wider grip than a twelve foot rod. Secondly, 13-foot rods have an advantage over 12-foot rods in casting range. However, neither one nor the other is an axiom. Let’s say, I’m 170 cm tall and have a 13-foot-long spod rod, and I don’t experience any inconvenience in using it. Also controversial is the issue regarding the greater “range” of 13-foot rods; there is no consensus on this issue.

13-foot rods cost a little more than their twelve-foot counterparts.

Design. By design, carp fishing rods are divided into plug-in and telescopic, and plug-in fishing rods are, in turn, divided into two-piece and three-piece. Telescopic fishing rods are significantly inferior to plug-in fishing rods in their performance characteristics. In turn, three-piece plugs are inferior to two-piece ones. Telescopic rods are generally not recommended to be considered as a working rod option, primarily due to their unreliability and reduced throwing properties. When purchasing, it is best to immediately buy a two-piece plug rod. The only argument in favor of a three-piece rod is its transport length: if this point is important to you, you can opt for a three-piece rod.

Carp rod test. The carp rod test is expressed in pounds (lb) and is the amount of weight that, when suspended, will cause the tip of the rod to bend 90 degrees. The test value (as well as the length) is always indicated on the form. Depending on the test of the rod, the optimal weight of the load for a given rod is calculated, which will be used when casting. The calculation formula is:

Rod test size + 0.5 ounces = optimal sinker weight (in ounces)

Example: we have a 3 lb test rod. We consider the optimal weight of the sinker: 3 + 0.5 = 3.5 ounces (1 ounce is approximately equal to 28 grams) 3.5 * 28 = 98 grams.

Another version of the same formula: carp rod test value + 1 = numerical value (in ounces) -> convert it to grams, subtract 15 grams = optimal sinker weight in grams.

Photo 4. Grays Torsion rod, the test and length are indicated on the form.

The obtained value does not mean that a rod with a test weight of three pounds cannot be used with a load of a different weight. The optimal weight of the load for casting is selected experimentally. The size of the load can increase if it is necessary to cast the rig further or “break through the wind”, or decrease if fishing occurs at short distances and on a muddy bottom. It all depends on the situation, as well as on what kind of sinker it will be more convenient for you to cast the rod.

Carp rods with a high test weight are more powerful, rigid and long-range, while those with a lower test weight are the opposite.

Build. Rod action refers to the time it takes for the blank to bend under load. Rods come in fast, medium and parabolic action. The complex action also stands out (when the same blank can work both as a semi-parabolic rod and as a fast action rod). The faster the action of the rod, the faster the blank takes its original position after loading, for example, when casting - accordingly, the cast will be longer. Long-range carp rods most often have a fast action. However, the emphasis on long-range action (fast action, large test) affects the ability of the rod to hold the fish when playing: it becomes too rigid, does not dampen the jerks of the fish well, which increases the likelihood of it coming off. Parabolic rods, or parabolics, are slow-action rods in which a significant part of the blank bends under load. They behave most delicately when fishing and make it easy to absorb complex jerks. Medium action rods are to some extent universal, and have both good throwing characteristics and a good ability to dampen fish jerks.

Thus, when choosing rods taking into account the action and test, you need to find some compromise between their throwing characteristics and the ability to dampen the jerks of the fish when playing (hold the fish).

The casting distance is also affected by the size of the rings installed on the blank. Recently, rod models with a 50 mm first ring have become widespread (the standard size of the first ring is 40 mm): the increased ring size increases the casting distance.

Based on the above, it becomes clear that there are a large number of fishing rods suitable for different fishing conditions. Rigid rods with large dough and fast action are long-range or long distance rods and are designed for fishing at extremely long distances. Example – Fox Horizon XTK, 13 ft, 3.5 lb). “Parabolics” are slow-action rods designed for fishing in small ponds at short distances. In addition to the standard 12- and 13-foot ones, there are rods with thin blanks, with a test weight of less than 3 pounds, of shortened length, and with a slow action. For example, the Stalker rods from Fox are 9 feet long and weigh 2.75 pounds. Rods with a medium action can be considered relatively universal (multirange): they have good casting characteristics, work well for landing fish, and are suitable for fishing in most situations.

There are also special carp rods for fishing from the surface, with a float - these are lightweight rods designed for catching small carp at short distances. Such rods are rarely used in classical carp fishing in our country.

However, these nuances are unlikely to be taken into account when purchasing your first fishing rods. To choose the right carp rod, you just need to understand what a test is, what characterizes rods with more or less test, and settle on the required length. When choosing my first rods, I preferred 3 lb test rods with a length of 3.6 m (12 ft). These were Fox Warrior S rods that worked well for a season and then were retired in favor of another class of rod with characteristics that I was happy with based on my fishing experience.

Not long ago, rods from the Ukrainian manufacturer ORIENT RODS appeared on the market. Among the relatively inexpensive rods that might be suitable for beginners, we can note the Orient Rods Galax rod.

A marker rod is an auxiliary carp rod and has all the same characteristics as working rods: test, length, action. It is distinguished by a structurally sensitive tip, which allows, when examining the bottom using a marker weight, to feel with your hand the vibrations that come from it and are transmitted through the fishing line to the blank. In this way, you can obtain information about the nature and structure of the bottom: silt, sand, clay, rocky bottom, and so on. In addition, marker rods have special marks on the form, the purpose of which is to help determine the depth at the fishing site. There are usually two such marks. When dropping line from the reel to the one or two foot mark, the number of pieces of line removed is multiplied by the distance to the mark on the rod to give a value indicating the depth at the fishing spot.

Marker rods are also made for various fishing conditions. Rods with large test weights, fast action, and increased length allow you to cast marker equipment over long distances, but at the same time lose sensitivity. An example is GreysDistanceMarker, which is 12.6 feet long. A regular marker rod allows you to work at medium and relatively long distances, without losing tip sensitivity. These include most of the “markers” used in carp fishing. For example, the GraysRodMarker, which has a standard length of 12 feet.

When purchasing your first rods, marker rods should be first on the list. Carp fishing is impossible without the process of bottom research, since it is built on tactics and thought, and fishing without a marker is fishing at random. Among entry-level markers in the budget segment, for example, Chub S-Plus Marker, Fox Warrior Marker Rod and others have a good reputation.

Spod rods have significant power, weighing over 4 pounds, and are designed to deliver bait to the fishing point using special devices that are cast with this rod (rocket, spomb). It is strictly not recommended to use a regular working rod as a spod rod due to the significant loads it has to withstand. Spod rods also have different powers and different test (for example, the Garmata spod rod has a test of 8 lb, which allows it to cast heavy rockets with bait quite far, and the FreeSpiritSpombRod spod rod in one of its modifications has a test of 4.5 lb and is designed specifically for casting correctly loaded spomb). Different spod rods are designed to work at different distances. Thus, examples of “long-range” spods include GreysDistanceSpod, SportexCatapultSpod, SportexCompetitionSpod. All of these rods are not beginner rods. As a starter, it is good to use a universal spod, suitable for throwing both small amounts of bait and heavy rockets at medium or relatively long distances. Such spods include, for example, Garmata with 5 lb test and FoxWarriorSpod 5.5 lb, which are very often used as the first spod rods. They have the necessary price-quality ratio.

There are universal carp rods that can be used both as a spod and as a marker. These include the Free Spirit Spomb Rod, which has marker marks on the blank.

I don’t think that when buying your first fishing rods, you should immediately buy a set of four working rods, a spod and a marker. You can reduce the number of gear by using working rods: two main rods are enough to start with. But a marker and a spod are something that you absolutely need to have right away, and you should start mastering working with them from your first trips to carp sessions.
