Catching crucian carp in autumn with a float rod: subtleties

Crucian carp can be caught using different tackles.
However, the most exciting and spectacular is fishing with a float rod. To catch crucian carp in the fall, you need to collect sensitive float gear and choose competent fishing tactics. A favorite hobby of a large number of Russian residents is fishing for crucian carp using a float rod.
What could be more beautiful than watching the float's antenna move and waiting for it to move to the side or hide under the water. It is precisely these moments of anticipation that fishermen love to catch crucian carp using float gear. Let's look at some of the subtleties of this process. Many fishermen consider summer to be the best season for catching crucian carp. However, in the fall, hunting with float gear can bring a lot of pleasure, because larger individuals are caught on the hook. Moreover, during this season the days become cooler, and insects do not bother fishermen as much. It is the first half of autumn, in my opinion, that is the most comfortable and catchy time of the year. For successful fishing, you should know about the peculiarities of fishing in the autumn.

Fishing for crucian carp in September using a float rod

The bite of crucian carp in September is largely determined by weather conditions. The owner of ponds and small lakes loves a warm environment in which he feeds intensely and enjoys life, jumping out of the water in the morning. If it is hot and dry at the beginning of autumn, then the fish continues to lead a summer lifestyle. However, as soon as the weather gets colder and the water temperature begins to drop, the effectiveness of fishing decreases significantly. To catch a decent crucian carp in September, it is better for an angler to go to medium or large reservoirs. In small ponds where crucian carp are in charge and there are no pike, the catch will only contain small representatives of cyprinids the size of a child’s palm. Small rivers with weak currents become promising places for catching crucian carp in the fall. In September, the bite is not constant throughout the day. At every body of water you have to study the feeding schedule for capricious fish. According to the observations of experienced crucian fishermen, prey is most active at noon. By 15-16 o'clock the biting usually stops.

Fishing for crucian carp in September is not inferior in efficiency to summer fishing. There is no point in recommending the best time of day with the onset of autumn. It all depends on the specific body of water and region. At the beginning of September, the weather differs little from its condition in August, so all summer fishing principles can be successfully applied. After a cold snap, crucian carp usually move away from the shore and concentrate in depressions or thickets of coastal vegetation. During this period, it is advisable to cast along the reed thickets. Sometimes, even without complementary food, a decent-sized crucian carp can bite. An exception may be days when there is prolonged cloudiness or periodic gusts of wind.

Catching crucian carp in October with a float rod

Crucian carp in the fall are good at detecting changes in atmospheric pressure, and with sudden changes, the fish’s bite is absolutely unpredictable. In bays on the leeward side you can expect a bite, but this is not a dogma, and the possibility of a complete lack of catch cannot be ruled out. In October, areas with weak currents and in reservoirs where the depth exceeds 2 m are promising. In October, effective crucian fishing occurs in stable weather. A few clear and calm days are a good sign for catching crucian carp in October.

In October, as the water cools, the activity of crucian carp decreases. Only at 10-11 am the fish begin to feed. You have to wait patiently for a bite all day long. This period usually ends 1-1.5 hours before sunset. Optimal for fishing in October will be clear and calm weather with stable atmospheric pressure for 2-3 days.

In mid-autumn, it is necessary to look for crucian carp at great depths within 3-5 m. The fisherman should go to flowing waters that are rich in aquatic vegetation. Promising places for fishing will be river bays with small currents.

Where to catch crucian carp with a float rod in the fall

In autumn, in comparison with the spring-summer period, the activity of crucian carp decreases somewhat. This is due to a decrease in water and air temperatures. However, this does not mean that the bite becomes much worse. The crucian carp still eats the same way. But in warm autumn weather it should be looked for closer to shallow water, and in cloudy weather - in deep water, with a high layer of bottom silt. The fish becomes very sensitive to changes in pressure and weather changes.

However, small and medium-sized individuals enter shallow water areas. Large, seasoned crucian carp continue to feed in holes or other deep areas of the reservoir. Therefore, if you are suddenly lucky enough to find a hole among the watery debris of snags or flooded bushes and trees, then you will definitely be lucky. I advise you not to show off your fishing spot. In winter, there will be a high probability of finding feeding crucian carp here.

With the arrival of autumn there comes a sharp correlation with the time of day. The main bite on the lakes occurs closer to noon, when the sun is at its highest point and better warms up the water layers. It ends abruptly at 15-16 hours. However, there are days when crucian carp activity continues almost until sunset.

I stayed for night fishing for crucian carp with a float only in the summer. Because already in September, sitting on the Angara on cold nights with the hope of catching the crucian carp of your “dream” becomes an uncomfortable experience. At this time, I focus on catching burbot using hooks.

I don’t agree with the mandatory presence of aquatic vegetation at the fishing site. Crucian carp is caught well both among the thickets and in an absolutely clean place. Below are photos of the areas where I fish myself.

As you can see, the reservoirs are completely different in type. But in both cases, crucian carp is caught excellently in autumn, spring and summer.

Fishing for crucian carp in November with a float rod

Increasing cold weather paralyzes the vital activity of heat-loving crucian carp. In November, you can only hope for a good bite in rare cases. The first fluttering of the float is observed only in the middle of the day, when the water warms up a little and the fish’s appetite awakens. The feeding period is often limited to an interval of 1-2 hours.

In November, special attention should be paid to equipping your fishing rod. Due to the clearing of cold water, it is necessary to equip the tackle with thin fluorocarbon fishing line. It is very important to set the float so that every touch of the fish to the bait is visible to the angler. Don't expect a sharp and protracted pull. The hook should be carried out at the slightest movement of the float to the side, as well as when it floats or sinks.

Making a float rod

When assembling a float rod for autumn crucian fishing, it is necessary to solve a difficult dilemma. On the one hand, it is necessary to cast the bait long distances, since fish rarely come to the shore to feed. On the other hand, wary crucian carp and clear water force you to equip your fishing rod with the thinnest fishing lines and small hooks. Only by maintaining a balance between these two factors will you be able to achieve a good result during autumn fishing. With this approach, match tackle is best suited.

  1. For autumn fishing, a long (4-6 m) but light rod equipped with guides is required.
  2. A spinning reel with a 1500-2000 spool according to the Shimanov classification is mounted on the fishing rod.
  3. For the main line, a model with a diameter of 0.14-0.16 mm and a length of 100-150 m is suitable.
  4. It is better to make a leash from a piece of fluorocarbon fishing line with a thickness of 0.08-0.12 mm.
  5. Since fishing occurs at a depth of up to 5 m, a sliding float is mounted on the main line.
  6. To properly load the float, a sinker is installed on the main line. Its weight is chosen in such a way as to completely drown the body of the float. To load the antenna to the working depth, a small pellet is attached to the leash, which is called a pad. If a crucian carp lifts the bait from the bottom, the antenna will float up, signaling the fisherman about a bite.
  7. The choice of hook depends on the size of the bait and the size of the likely catch. For example, when using bloodworms, a thin and sharp hook No. 12-16 is required, and when hooking a worm, a larger hook No. 8-10 is needed.

Features of autumn feeding

One of the most important factors that affects the bite of crucian carp in the fall is bait. When preparing the mixture, you must follow the following rules.

  1. The quantity and nutritional value of bait should decrease as the water cools.
  2. In early autumn, it is possible to use a plant base to create an attractive mixture. In November, bait is a symbiosis of small bloodworms or chopped worms with soil and clay. It is better to underfeed autumn fish than to saturate it - after that it will not pay attention to the bait.

One of the best ingredients for attracting crucian carp on cool days of autumn is the following:

  • 1/3 cup crushed small shells;
  • 1/2 matchbox of crushed dry daphnia;
  • 50 g macadamia;
  • a small amount of sugar vanillin (on the tip of a knife).

To obtain the required consistency of the bait, soil, clay and water are added.

Bait for crucian carp in October

Bait can significantly increase your chances of catching. In any case, its aroma will attract crucian carp to the fishing spot and you will no longer throw the bait at random, but to the place where the crucian carp is concentrated. But when feeding crucian carp in October, you also need to take into account some nuances.

For example, it is worth considering that crucian carp do not feel particularly thirsty for food in October. Therefore, it is very important not to overfeed him. Just a little bait is enough to lure him to the fishing spot. Make 2-3 balls of bait about the size of a tennis ball and throw them next to the float. The crucian carp will certainly smell it and approach your bait if it has at least a slight feeling of hunger.

The second thing to consider is that the bait must be of plant origin, but always with the addition of animal components. For example, you can feed crucian carp with pearl barley with finely chopped dung worms or food bloodworms.

Bait recipes for crucian carp in October

Many sites contain very cunning and intricate recipes for bait for crucian carp. When I read them, I am simply amazed. Most likely, the author himself has never bothered with bait so much, but in order to make it look believable, the composition of the bait looks simply stunning.

It’s as if a magic potion is being prepared, and not groundbait (when you read that you need to add 10 different cereals and cereals to the bait, and then crushed shells, daphnia, etc., you just want to add a dragon’s eye and a unicorn’s tear).

In fact, you shouldn’t stress so much when preparing bait. 2-3 components are enough to attract crucian carp. And if he is completely inactive that day, then no amount of bait will help.

I have a separate article “How to make bait for crucian carp with your own hands,” but in order not to chase you through the pages, I will also give examples of several effective and simple recipes.

Recipe 1

Ingredients:

  • fried macadamia, ground;
  • millet;
  • water.

Preparation:

Bring 2 cups of water to a boil (in a metal container, of course, not in glasses). Pour a glass of millet into boiling water. Cook the millet until there is no water left in the pan, but only porridge. Do not forget to stir so that the millet does not burn in any way. The smell of burning will have a negative effect on attracting crucian carp to the fishing site.

When the millet is ready, add the ground flour to it and mix thoroughly. When catching crucian carp with a float, proportions are not so important. But if you fish with feeder springs, then you need to put the tops to a minimum. The fluff makes the bait crumbly, which is completely useless when fishing with a spring.

Recipe 2

Ingredients:

  • millet;
  • ground halva;
  • water.

Preparation:

Preparation - similar to the previous recipe. Ground halva can be bought at the market where feed for livestock, chickens and other animals is sold. In general, millet is an ideal basis for any bait. Boiled millet is very viscous, making it very easy to mold balls of the desired size. In order to give more aroma, halva, makukha or other fragrant substances are added to it.

This kind of bait is very cheap, and the effect from it is no worse than from a store-bought one. As they say, why pay more? Just don’t forget to chop worms into the prepared bait or add a few bloodworms. This must be done directly while fishing so that the live bait is fresh and, perhaps, even moving.

That’s basically all the most important information that will help you successfully catch crucian carp in October. If you liked the article, give it stars; if not, write in the comments what you didn’t like. Thank you and no tail, no scales!
