Catching crucian carp on a feeder in the fall: differences and methods

Crucian carp is one of the most famous and widespread fish in Russia and Ukraine. Crucian carp is found almost everywhere; you can find it less often in reservoirs, but often it is there too. You can even catch crucian carp in some swamps, provided there are large areas of clean water. So finding a place to catch crucian carp in the fall will not be difficult. However, keep in mind that autumn fishing for crucian carp has a lot of features, especially in the last month of autumn. Don't forget to properly prepare for autumn crucian fishing in November.

Fishing for crucian carp in November has several features. Of course, a lot depends on the specific November weather. After all, it happens, especially in the northern regions of our vast Motherland, that already in November everything is covered in ice, and in the south the weather can be quite warm - local residents have not even closed the swimming season. But in any case, in November, crucian carp already begin to lose activity and mostly settle down for the winter at the bottom. Therefore, it is best to choose an already familiar body of water for catching crucian carp in November. And fish exactly where the fish were best caught in the warm seasons, that is, where the bait took place. This is where most likely the largest number of crucian carp will be found.

Bait for catching crucian carp in November

Since with the onset of cold weather crucian carp loses activity due to a decrease in metabolism, it is best to refuse bait; often it will not give any results, mainly due to the fact that crucian carp moves only in very limited spaces in November. If there is no bite in a given place for a long time, then you should re-cast the fishing rod. After all, it is quite possible that there is no crucian carp in this place, and it is unlikely that it will swim there. You have to look for the fish yourself. It is best to recast every 10 - 15 minutes.

Choosing a fishing spot

You should not run with fishing rods to the first body of water you come across; such an approach in late autumn is unacceptable. Fishermen have noticed that on the eve of winter, crucian carp is better caught on those lakes where there is no other fish besides it. He is the only owner there and behaves accordingly, he is not particularly capricious. And vice versa, in reservoirs where the silver beauty has to share the water area with roach, perch, pike and other species, it bites much worse, and only comes out to feed for a short time and at certain hours. The best option is to go to that lake or pond where there are a lot of crucian carp and they feel at ease there. Moreover, in summer, fishing in such reservoirs could be “boring,” but in late autumn there is a pretty good bite, which is explained by the deterioration of the food supply. The vegetation has settled, worms, leeches and other living creatures have burrowed into the ground, so the crucian carp has little choice; it has to try the baits offered.

As for promising points, in November you should be guided by one elementary truth: in the shallow coastal zone in late autumn there are no crucian carp and there cannot be! A decrease in water temperature causes fish to move to a more comfortable depth. For the object of fishing, a difference of 1-2 degrees is noticeable, so it prefers to stay in holes, underwater depressions and other suitable depressions. Excursions into shallow water (to depths of up to 1.5 meters) are still possible, but only if abnormally warm weather sets in. To do this, the air temperature should be kept at around 12-15 degrees.

It should be mentioned that in November, along with the depth, crucian carp are attracted to various shelters - flooded trees, snags, stones, remains of hydraulic structures, sunken old wooden boats, etc. Among such rubbish, a school of crucian carp can stand motionless for hours. That is why the main tactic for fishing for crucian carp in late autumn is to frequently re-throw the gear to different points. He will not look for the bait himself; it needs to be presented to the fish right under his nose.

Features of catching crucian carp in November

One of the features of crucian carp fishing in November is that the water in reservoirs becomes very clear. Due to this, it is best to use a fishing line with a minimum diameter, that is, camouflage it as much as possible, otherwise the chance of catching a crucian carp is reduced. It is best to use small worms or large moths as bait for catching crucian carp in November, but they are unlikely to be found at this time of year. Although, judging by the research, bait with a high protein content is best, these studies were carried out in other countries, so with a colder autumn, it is quite possible that we will have different results. Float tackle

If you are going to catch crucian carp with a fishing rod, you should pay great attention to the bait. If in spring and summer crucian carp is caught well on boiled pearl barley with vanillin, then in the fall you should choose a more protein-rich bait.

In the pre-winter period, it will be difficult to lure crucian carp with plant food, but it will happily go for earthworms, maggots or moths. It makes no sense to feed crucian carp in advance in the fall; frequent changes of fishing location will bring much greater benefit.

In November, the water in reservoirs becomes more transparent, so you need to choose small bait and thinner fishing line; it is best to use medium-sized hooks, for example No. 2.5 or No. 3.5. If you choose a smaller hook, the crucian carp can easily slide off it; a larger hook will be more difficult to disguise.

How to catch crucian carp: when it is in an inactive state, do not drive with bait, do not force the crucian carp to chase the bait.

When choosing a fishing rod, give preference to long and light models, the optimal length is 4.5 - 5 m. A telescopic fishing rod is also a good choice, it is light and long.

Since the fish are inactive, you should choose a very sensitive float, then you can notice the slightest fluctuation and understand whether the fish is biting. It will be better if you secure it at one lower point.

Bait for crucian carp in November

When fishing for crucian carp, the main thing to remember is that crucian carp are not active in November, and there is no need to play with the bait. It is best to leave it motionless, otherwise it is quite possible that the crucian carp will not chase it. And remember that you need to recast if it doesn’t bite for a long time. To catch crucian carp you should use hooks No. 2.5-3.5. Less should not be used, as there is a high chance that the hook will simply slip out of the crucian’s mouth. Although some even use size 4 and 5 hooks, it all depends on your preference.

Feeder

It will be easier to catch fish with a feeder in November than with a fishing rod; the feeder records even the slightest movements of the fish. Usually the crucian carp does not make sharp jerks; it spends a long time on the bait, biting it and only after making sure that everything suits him does it begin to lead it to the side.

Then you may notice a sharp jerk, but it may be too late and instead of a crucian carp you will get a eaten worm. This situation will not happen with a feeder, since it allows you to catch fish at the earliest and most reliable stage of fishing.

Feeding

Fishermen constantly argue about whether it is necessary to feed crucian carp in November. Opponents of the use of bait argue that during this period its effectiveness is zero. Others know from personal experience how much more catch can be achieved with just a few small handfuls of nutrient mixture. Just a small one, since at the end of autumn there is a risk of quickly saturating the fish, after which it will lose interest in bait for a long time.

The bait during this period should be low in nutrition and consist half of soil. An obligatory component is a living component, which can be small maggots, bloodworms or crushed worms. It should be at least 20% of the total volume of the mixture. When fishing with a rod, small balls of bait (like a tangerine) can be thrown at a point at intervals of 40 minutes to an hour. Feeders feed November crucian carp differently. They use the entire volume for starting feeding, and then remove the feeder and install a regular lead weight. The main goal of this change in equipment is quiet casts that do not frighten the fish.

Useful tips

  • On a familiar body of water, the search for crucian carp should start from the places where it was previously caught at this time of year. As a rule, such points operate for more than one season.
  • It has been noticed that on those days when the wind does not change direction, the crucian carp bites better. Unfortunately, this rarely happens in late autumn.
  • The reaction of the fished object to bait changes along with a decrease in water temperature. The colder the water, the lower the effectiveness of the bait mixture, no matter how good it is.
  • Sudden changes in weather conditions, accompanied by surges in atmospheric pressure, negatively affect the bite of crucian carp in November. It would be more accurate to say that at such moments he does not bite at all, so it is better to be patient and wait until the weather returns to normal.

Fishing in November

Beginner fishermen need to know that fishing in November can be divided into three periods, each of which is characterized by its own characteristics:

  • fishing in November before the ice freezes;
  • fishing directly during ice cover;
  • fisherman on the first ice.

It should be noted that the timing of ice formation for water bodies in the central zone of the European part of Russia is almost the same, with the exception of the northern regions, where freeze-up in some years is observed even in the last ten days of October, and the southern regions, where it usually occurs in the first half of December. In some years, the southern reservoirs of the Krasnodar Territory do not freeze at all, and successful fishing continues in November in open water. In the Kuban, vimba and shemai are well caught with bottom rods; predatory fish take lures and live bait.

We will find out how to fish in each of the indicated periods, what gear to use and what kind of fish to expect.

Fishing in November before freeze-up

In the first ten days of the month there is constant rain, sometimes with wet snow, and when it clears, frosts occur. During this period, fishing is not much different from fishing in October. The angler's calendar for November notes that, if the weather is favorable, fishing with spinning rods and mugs continues until freeze-up in November. Fishing with mugs gives good results in November, but at low temperatures it is difficult and requires thorough physical preparation. In November, in good weather, fishing with float rods continues for perch - for fry and roach - for bloodworms (preferably in lakes).

Fishing in November during freeze-up days

In the first days of freeze-up, fish usually take throughout the day. Pike perch bite better in the early morning and in the evening, before dark. Fishing is most successful on cloudy, calm days with low temperatures. You need to start fishing in ponds, lakes and backwaters of large bodies of water.

Fishing in November on first ice

After freeze-up, fish are caught from morning to evening. More successful fishing is in relatively warm, cloudy and calm weather.

Almost all types of fish can be caught well with winter sports gear on the first ice:

  • In November, fishing with large winter lures is good for pike perch, pike perch, and large perch;
  • In November, medium-sized perch is caught with small spoons; it is better to catch it at shallow depths near sunken snags and grass, using a worm or bloodworm as bait;
  • Fishing in November with a jig with a bloodworm attachment gives excellent results - this way you can catch perch and roach;
  • In November, using winter float rods at depths with a slight current, you can catch bream, chub, roach, silver bream, perch, dace, and gudgeon.
  • They use winter live bait rods to catch pike in November; fishing will be more successful if you fish in deep places, and it is better to use ruff, perch or crucian carp as live bait.
  • fishing in November for burbot is more effective with bottom fishing rods at night; it is better to fish with ruff or small roach;
  • Fishing in November during fishing - all types of fish, except pike and pike perch, at shallow depths with a smooth current;
  • In November, pike perch, large perch, and pike come to the girders from the depths.

The bite of crucian carp depending on the month of fishing

The nature of fishing for crucian carp, like other fish, has pronounced seasonal characteristics. Let us dwell in detail on the features of crucian carp fishing in the autumn months.

Fishing for crucian carp in September

In September, compared to summer, there is a decrease in feeding activity, and, as a consequence, the efficiency of catching crucian carp. This is due to a gradual decrease in air and water temperatures. However, taking into account some features, you can catch crucian carp in September in no less quantities than in summer.

Successful fishing for crucian carp at this time can be observed in deep reservoirs with a significant current. Small rivers with weak currents are usually distinguished by the formation of different bottom conditions that are suitable for the activity of crucian carp. In such places, feeder, picker and half-bottom are used for fishing.

Experience shows that in September crucian carp are most active around noon. In warm weather, activity occurs earlier; in cold weather, activity occurs later. Usually the bite ends by 15-16 hours. Since crucian carp feed in large concentrations in September, choosing a good place can bring a good catch.

At this time, the bite of crucian carp is also very dependent on the weather. Crucian carp prefers clear weather, so in strong winds and heavy clouds the biting intensity is significantly reduced.

Fishing for crucian carp in November

In October, you need to look for crucian carp exclusively at depth
. Due to the colder weather, the activity of crucian carp decreases sharply.

In October, an increase in the activity of crucian carp is observed from the very early morning until 10 o’clock. There is also a surge in activity for an hour and a half before sunset and until complete darkness.

The best weather for fishing is a clear day with normal conditions for 2–3 days, since it is believed that crucian carp are able to catch weather changes in advance.

In October, crucian carp go to the bottom, so the working depth is 3–5 meters.

The greatest likelihood of finding crucian carp at this time is associated with flowing reservoirs rich in aquatic vegetation, as well as river bays with a small current.

Fishing for crucian carp in November

It is quite difficult to catch crucian carp in November, but bloodworms increase the chance of catching.
Increasing cold forces the crucian carp to lie down on the bottom.

In November, the greatest biting activity is observed in the middle of the day with clear weather, when the water warms up. This leads to an increase in the activity of crucian carp, which increases the chance of tempting it with well-chosen bait.

In other weather conditions, the chance of catching crucian carp is significantly reduced.

Since water transparency increases as the water temperature drops, when fishing for crucian carp you need to use the thinnest line possible, which increases fishing efficiency.

When fishing for crucian carp in November, the bait should be located almost at the depth of the bottom, where crucian carp hides in cold weather.

As you know, a feeder is a bottom fishing rod in which a feeder weight is used instead of a simple load. As a rule, a filler is used when it is necessary to fish at significant distances from the shore and at sufficiently large depths. This tackle is characterized by high sensitivity and low responsiveness to the wind.

In the fall, a feeder is ideal for catching crucian carp, which is capable of working at great depths, where crucian carp is almost constantly located in the autumn.

The beginning of autumn is characterized by increased feeding of crucian carp to store fat for the winter, so there is every chance of getting a rich catch. At this time, crucian carp gives preference to animal food: bloodworms, worms, maggots. It is these components that must be included in the autumn bait for crucian carp, which, moreover, must be well crushed.

Experienced fishermen offer the following composition of autumn bait:

  • 1 part breadcrumbs,
  • 2 parts makukha,
  • 1 part ground rolled oats,
  • 1 part crushed hemp
  • 1 part ground grain
  • 1 part bran,
  • 1 part chopped peanuts.

A significant mass of crushed maggots and worms must be added to this bait.

It is recommended to shade this bait using various food colorings. An alternative to dyes is cocoa. In some reservoirs, increased efficiency is observed in baits prepared with the addition of seasonings - dill, coriander.

When using a feeder, special attention should be paid to the thickness of the leash. It should not exceed 0.14 mm, if possible – 0.10–0.12 mm.

For fishing with bloodworms and maggots, hooks No. 18–22 are used, and for worms – No. 16–18. In some cases, amazing results are obtained when using a bread attachment. In this case, it is useful to add soaked bread crumbs to the bait composition.

When catching crucian carp with a fishing rod in the fall, you must remember that at this time the crucian carp is at significant depths - more than 3-4 meters. Based on this, the fishing rod should have a sufficiently long fishing line. It is advisable to use a main line with a diameter of about 0.15 mm and a thin leader with a diameter of 0.08–0.1 mm. The length of the rod that is used in this case, as a rule, reaches a length of 3 meters. If the fishing rod has a reel, you must use its inertia-free variety. The float is used sliding. It is important to use the correct weight, because in the fall the crucian carp takes the bait very carefully. If the fish feels resistance, it will immediately throw out the bait.

The bite of crucian carp is characteristic only of this type of fish. At first, the float trembles slightly, then suddenly lies down on the water and moves to the side. This is the perfect moment to strike.

How to increase your fish catch?

Over 7 years of active fishing, I have found dozens of ways to improve the bite. Here are the most effective ones:

  1. Bite activator
    . This pheromone additive attracts fish most strongly in cold and warm water. Discussion of the bite activator “Hungry Fish”.
  2. Increased gear sensitivity.
    Read the appropriate manuals for your specific type of gear.
  3. Pheromone
    -based lures .
