Blennius sanguinolentus

Conditions of detention

Due to their relatively small size, aquariums from 100 liters are suitable for dogs. A prerequisite is the presence of a large number of live stones, which the dogs use both as shelter and as a food base.

Comfortable water parameters for them: temperature +23..+26 degrees, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.021-1.025.

About fish-dogs

The order of fish, which is called “Pufferfish” or “Pufferfish”, contains very different representatives, for example, sunfish, triggerfish and boxfishes. But the most amazing of them is the dog fish. When we pronounce this name, we begin to wonder why she received such a name. The purpose of this article: to help the reader understand the most interesting group of pufferfish, and learn to distinguish between species that are often replaced with each other. For example, hedgehog fish (or ball fish) and puffer fish (which is a dog fish), which belong to different families.

Reviews about blennies

Yana Ilyina, review of the dog Exen two-color

Very interesting behavior and appearance, helps keep the aquarium clean, no problems with feeding.

Disadvantages: Fights with similar species and its own kind.

More timid in the presence of large fish, even peaceful ones. Quite easy to tame. Needs shelters - caves, shells. Here in the photo he is excited - white “whiskers” and stripes along the body. In a calm state, the color is usually even, gradient from blue-gray to yellow. Not very jumpy, but can climb into a turned off pump, for example.

Olga Rusakovich, review of the dog Exen bicolor

Very interesting behavior and appearance, helps keep the aquarium clean, no problems with feeding.

A very cute fish. My color was very different from the photo - it was such a brown-green, very beautiful.

Disadvantages: The disadvantage is more subjective than objective, because I tried to place this fish in an aquarium with predators to eat excess algae. In short, the fish is so slow and does not swim well that it was almost immediately eaten by a hedgehog fish (diodon).

I recommend it to those whose stones are too overgrown with algae - they eat greens with a bang. Don’t even think about putting it in an aquarium with predators - there won’t even be any horns or legs left.

Dogfish or rockfish (Takifugu rubripes). Photos and videos of dogfish or pufferfish

Dogfish or rocktooth (Takifugu rubripes) is a marine fish that lives in subtropical and tropical seas. In Russia, it is widespread from Peter the Great Bay to Southern Sakhalin, and also lives in the waters of the Sea of Japan along the coasts of Japan, China, and Korea.

It lives at a depth of about 100 m and reaches 50 cm in length. The dogfish belongs to the pufferfish or rock-toothed family (Tetraodontidae) - this is a fairly large family that includes 19 genera and more than 90 species.

Some of their representatives live in fresh waters - pufferfish (Tetraodon): fahak (T. fahaka), mbu (T. mbu) in rivers and lakes of Africa; 7 more species live in the waters of the West Indies and the Amazon.

All fish in this family are poisonous. Toxic substances are contained in the skin and internal organs: liver, intestines, gonads, caviar. The most dangerous poison is tetrodotoxin. It is a poison of natural origin, with a nerve paralytic effect, which, when entering the human body, causes nervous convulsions with severe pain.

Most often, the use of this toxin is fatal. It has not yet been possible to create an antidote against it. But this does not deter residents of Southeast Asian countries, where pufferfish meat is considered a delicacy. The first symptoms may appear within a few minutes after finishing the meal.

Initially, tingling sensations and numbness in the mouth appear, then this sensation spreads to the entire body. Severe headache, pain in the abdomen, aching pain in the limbs, disturbance of gait - these signs of poisoning occur later.

Vomiting becomes a characteristic symptom, but if it does not occur in a timely manner, then the possibility of recovery is reduced to zero. Then speech becomes upset, blood pressure decreases, body hypothermia sets in, breathing becomes difficult, loss of consciousness occurs and death occurs from respiratory arrest (the respiratory center is blocked). Often the disease develops rapidly. In Japan, about 100 fugu lovers die every year. The body of the dogfish has a round shape. The skin is covered with small spines that lie close to the body when at rest. Their color is interesting: it differs in all subspecies, but has similarities - dark round spots, which is why they remind many of the Dalmatian.

Sac-like outgrowths extend from the stomach of the dog fish, which in case of danger are filled with water, which is why the fish becomes like a hedgehog curled up in a ball; this appearance frightens it. Until the danger passes, the dog fish does not regain its previous appearance.

The spherical shape of the body makes the fish practically invulnerable. Even if a large predator tries to swallow it in this form, it will not succeed - it will get stuck in the throat of the predator, which will subsequently die.

Pelvic fins are absent, pectoral fins are well developed and with the help of them the fish moves forward and backward. Their tail serves as a rudder. In this regard, this type of fish has a peculiar swimming style: they seem to walk in the water, rather than swim.

Their fins lack radial bones, so they make wave-like movements, due to which they slowly hang in the water column. The speed of movement is low, but the fish has maneuverability: fish can move both head first and tail.

If their skeleton is compared with other bony fish, then they have much less bones. There are no abdominal bones, their role is played by powerful abdominal muscles.

The head of the fish is large and thick, the mouth (beak) is small. The jaws grow together and form solid plates, similar to 4 teeth. The fish themselves are predators. Pufferfish bite and chew coral twigs, which is why they got their second name - rocktooths. They also use their mouths as weapons: tearing apart crabs, breaking shells of mollusks, attacking and damaging sea urchins and starfish.

Cases have been recorded where pufferfish were able to bite through wire and rusted fishing hooks. Dogfish, like all pufferfish, have mobile, iridescent pupils that are green and blue.

Some species of dogfish exhibit photochromia: the lens changes its transparency depending on the intensity of light.

Under their eyes there are small tentacles with nostrils - the organs of smell. They can distinguish odors in water over a very long distance.

The spawning of dog fish is preceded by mating games: they draw many circles, then the female lays eggs, which stick to the stones at the bottom. The caviar is small, its diameter is 1.2-1.4 mm. The male fertilizes the clutch and guards it until the larvae hatch.

The male pufferfish transfers the larvae to a hole dug in the sand and protects them until they switch to feeding on their own. The larvae are similar in appearance to tadpoles. They independently begin to feed on marine unicellular organisms, later the diet becomes more varied.

Some representatives of pufferfish, such as tetrodons, can be kept in an aquarium. Quite aggressive fish, so it is better to keep small groups of 4-5 individuals in a large aquarium. They can eat the fins and tails of both fish of their own species and others.

The aquarium should be at least 200 liters, temperature 22-25°C. Good filtration and aeration of water is needed. To prevent diseases, it is recommended to add salt to the water in the aquarium at the rate of 1 tablespoon of salt per 10 liters of water.

Tetraodons do not eat freeze-dried food; they need to be fed with large live food: worms, small fish, as well as finely chopped hearts, liver and shellfish. It is good to reduce the number of snails, so sometimes they are temporarily placed in a common aquarium if their number needs to be reduced. There are no known cases of captive breeding.

Recently, scientists reported that they had created a non-poisonous puffer fish. It turns out that if starfish and shellfish are absent from the fish’s natural diet, then the poison, tetrodotoxin, will not be synthesized in the fish’s body. It is advisable to introduce such a diet for pufferfish from birth.
