6 Japanese Ghosts You Should Avoid at All Costs

Legend[edit]

A woman with her mouth cut open walks the streets of Japan. She wears a medical mask and preys on children. If you get in her way, she will stop you and ask you a question. If you give her the wrong answer, a terrible fate awaits you.

Imagine this scene. You are returning home from school, and your path lies along a deserted city street. Suddenly, you hear a strange noise in the shadows. You look closer and see a beautiful woman. She has long black hair and is wearing a beige coat. A medical mask covers the lower part of her face. In Japan, wearing medical masks is not unusual; they are worn during the windy season to prevent dust from entering the respiratory tract.

She comes out of the shadows and gets in your way.

"I am beautifull?" she asks.

If you answer no, she kills you on the spot with the scissors she always carries with her. If you answer yes, she rips off the mask, revealing her horribly deformed face. Her mouth is cut from ear to ear, and her sharp teeth are visible where the cuts are, and a large, disgusting, red tongue wiggles inside.

“AND NOW I’m beautiful?” - she shouts.

Horrified, you try to answer. If you say “No”, she will take out huge scissors and immediately kill you by cutting off your head. If you say yes, she will cut your mouth from ear to ear so that you look just like her. If you try to run away, she will catch up with you and kill you, cutting you in half.

You can avoid death only by saying “Am I beautiful?” then POSSIBLY she will leave and you will be alive

Yuki-onna

1. Yuki-onna (snow woman) appears only during a snowstorm. There are dozens of legends about her. The snow woman has dark hair, deathly pale skin, and lips blue from the frost. Sometimes she is credited with completely opposite roles: from a loving mother to a cold-blooded executioner.

All stories usually begin the same way: travelers get caught in bad weather and lose their way. That's when they meet the snow woman. She takes the unfortunate ones further away from the road or kills them on the spot, breathing frosty air on them and sucking out their souls.

One of the most famous legends tells of the fate of a boy whom Yuki-onna spares because of his beauty and young age. He can leave and live freely if he agrees to never tell anyone about her existence. The boy keeps his word. Years later, he starts a family and lives happily with his wife and children, only occasionally remembering his meeting with the snow woman.

But one day the fool decides to tell this story to his wife and finds out that she is Yuki-onna. Interesting plot twist, isn't it? His wife does not kill him for confessing, although in some versions of the legend she melts away after the husband learns the truth.

Oiwa

Origin[edit]

There are many versions of how Kuchisake-onna got her terrible shapeless mouth. Some say it is the result of a failed medical operation. Others claim she was injured in a terrible car accident. And some even believe that she is an escaped madwoman who is so crazy that she cut her own mouth.

According to one legend, many years ago, in Japan, there lived a very beautiful woman who was an extremely narcissistic person. Her husband, who was a very jealous and cruel person, began to suspect that she was cheating on him. In a fit of rage, he grabbed a sword and cut her mouth, shouting: “Who will consider you beautiful now?” She has become a vengeful ghost who haunts the streets of Japan, wearing a medical mask to hide her horrific cuts.

Author: Mikhail Klyots Heaven is on lock. Not a single ray of sunshine broke through the thick gray clouds. This could only mean one thing - the streets would be deserted, people love the comfort of home, and it multiplies many times over when the weather outside is bad. Yumiko stood outside the house, afraid to go inside. A happy family life sank into oblivion, and her husband Kezuo looked more and more paranoid every day, since it was unclear where jealousy was driving him crazy. At first it was just nagging and verbal altercations, then beatings began, once he even threw a knife at Yumiko. Fortunately, the blow landed on the handle and only left a small bruise. After work, Yumiko went straight home. When there were no problems with her husband, she did not just walk, but seemed to fly on the wings of love, so that upon arrival she would dissolve in the arms of her loving husband. When the unfounded accusations of infidelity began, she didn’t want to come home at all, and she delayed this moment more and more, wandering around the market for a long time, going into a cafe, etc. It took about fifteen minutes to walk from work to home, but she came after two or three hours, which gave Kazuo even more reasons for jealousy and hysterics. He even began to hint to his wife that she should quit her job, but Yumiko loved her too much. She worked as a seamstress in a small tailoring shop, and handled scissors, needles and thread as skillfully as a fencer wields his sword. Today, Yumiko simply stood near the house, watching the rare passers-by. Sometimes loving couples passed by, they whispered, cooed sweetly and laughed. Yumiko had long forgotten about such communication with her other half. Her once blooming face seemed to be covered with a shawl of despair and fatigue; at 24, she looked five or six years older. It was starting to get dark, it was time to go home. Yumiko knew that the jealous man had long been counting the seconds of her lateness and was painting pictures in her head of her indulging in sweet pleasures in the arms of lustful lovers. Having inserted the key, the girl reluctantly turned it, each turn of the key was accompanied by clicks, between which it seemed like an eternity passed. Yumiko entered the apartment, it was quiet, Kezuo was sitting in the kitchen, a half-drunk bottle of Suntory was in front of him. “Darling, I’m here,” Yumiko tried to be very nice to her husband, although it rarely helped, he always had plenty of reasons to find fault. - I see. How's your work? - Kazuo muttered. — It was boring at work today; there haven’t been many orders lately. For the last two hours I had to just sit and chat with the girls until the working day was over - the girl wanted to quickly chat with her husband, since it was clear from the whiskey he drank that he would soon begin to feel sleepy, and this day would pass without a scandal. - Clear. Who did you chat with for the next three hours? — Not with anyone, I went to a cafe to have a snack, then to the market, we ran out of vegetables. - Not just vegetables. - And what else? Kazuo stood up from his chair. “My patience has already run out when I calmly endured your lies.” - But I... - What are you thinking? Why can you come from your friends and shoot me sweet little eyes, and I won’t understand anything? Stop lying to me already! Tell it like it is, where have you been?! - I already told you everything. And I tell you every time, I don’t have any friends, and I didn’t even have any before you. Kezuo abruptly stood up from his chair, jumped up to Yumiko, and, grabbing her throat with one hand, roughly pressed her against the wall. She hit the back of her head slightly. - You're a beauty, aren't you? – he whispered to her. This whisper sounded more frightening than any hysterical screams. - What? I did not understand you. - You're so beautiful. And you know your worth, right? Your lovers must have money. How can I, a simple garbage man, compete with them, right? For the first time these days, Yumiko began to be filled with anger. It was impossible to continue to calmly endure all these nagging and stupid speculations; she decided to play his game herself. Pushing Kezuo away, she said, “Of course!” I often told them about what a damn loser you were. It makes them so happy. They are richer than you, they are more courteous, more gentle. They are great in bed! What can you do against them? They don’t have to ask “Am I beautiful?” to get a compliment! It's your own fault, you callous, obnoxious bastard! During her angry tirade, Yumiko did not notice how Kezuo's eyes were becoming bloodshot. According to her calculations, counter aggression will cool her husband’s jealousy, and he himself will stop believing his guesses. But she miscalculated. “You better shut up,” Kezuo hissed. - Well, it’s not for you to decide when I open my mouth and in front of whom. And why... - Say one more word, rubbish, and... - a knife appeared in Kezuo’s hand, but Yumiko, apparently, did not attach any importance to this, she was so carried away by mocking her husband that she stopped sensibly assessing the situation. - And what? Will you stab me? Put down the knife, idiot, a nail file would be more suitable for you, large sizes are clearly not your thing. In one leap, Kazuo crossed the kitchen, knocked his recently beloved wife to the floor and put a knife to her throat. With the words: “Now you will become even more beautiful!”, he ran the knife along his left cheek, then along his right. Blood sprayed and Yumiko screamed. The madman tried to cover her mouth so that the neighbors would not hear anything, but his hand slipped because of the blood. Then Kezuo began stabbing him in the stomach, shouting at the same time: “Well, whore, do you want compliments? Ask again, “Am I beautiful?”, ask, well! Why are you wheezing, ask this question for the last time!” He continued stabbing until the body went limp. The entire kitchen was covered in blood. For another minute, the newly made widower lay next to the dead body of his wife, looking at her disfigured face and muttering curses under his breath. By this time he was completely sober. ———- It turns out that even working as a garbage man can be beneficial. No, you cannot become a corrupt official there, because there is nothing to take bribes for. But it’s very easy to get rid of a corpse in this kind of work, especially if your colleagues are also your bosom friends. Kezuo told them a sad story about how his wife showed up home heavily drunk with two rogues (he had been telling his friends about her love affairs, which never happened, for a long time, so they believed it all at once). And allegedly these two bastards beat him so much that he passed out, and when he woke up, he found the bloody corpse of his wife in the kitchen. When asked why he did not go to the police, Kazuo replied that he was afraid that the police would not believe him and would blame him for everything. But the friends believed every word and turned a blind eye to the fact that, the next time he went to work, Kazuo threw a large bundle, tightly wrapped in bags, into the garbage truck. The next day, the widower nevertheless contacted the police, but about the disappearance of his wife, they say, she did not return from work one day. They lived in a rather troubled area, so no one was surprised by the police. After some time, a couple of tramps who lived in a landfill stumbled upon the package with the body. The police questioned the garbage men about finding a body while unloading garbage, but all said they had not seen anything of the kind. And since there are about 12,000 garbage collectors working in the city, it was unrealistic to compare all the readings or arrange confrontations. When the police came to Kazuo's home with bad news, he, like a loving husband, feigned sincere grief. The cops believed it and promised to find the culprits as soon as possible. But Kazuo was sure that they would not find it and even hoped for it. The squabbles with the corpse and the police were settled, and life returned to normal. Home, work, drinking with friends, casual relationships helped Kezuo forget about all his worries. His conscience did not torment him, his wife did not appear in nightmares, everything was as if Yumiko had never existed. Only occasionally did he remember her sweet face. ———- Sunday evening, twilight, silence and peace. Kezuo trudged out of the bar with an uneven gait, taking a deep breath of the evening air. His mood was high, there was a sweet emptiness in his thoughts, and a blissful smile on his face. As he approached the door, Kezuo took out his keys and immediately dropped them. After whiskey it is difficult to perform even the simplest actions. Having picked up the keys, he was about to open the door, but with his peripheral vision he noticed some movement from the side. There was a silhouette in the distance to the right. Without giving it any importance, Kazuo turned towards the door, but something made him look to the right again. The silhouette was already closer, about fifteen meters away. How was it possible to cover such a distance in a second? Kezuo shouted, “Hey, don’t you think it’s a bad idea to hang around here at this time?” Who knows what could happen? The silhouette slowly moved towards him. A girl in a brown coat stepped into the light of the lantern. She had a gauze mask on her face. - Listen, if you are sick with something, you better stay away from me, understand? – Kezuo was cautious. - What do you want? - I am beautifull? - W...w..what? - Am I beautiful? A chill ran down Kezuo's spine. This voice. It was definitely Yumiko's voice. But she's dead, maybe it's just a coincidence? The frightened widower slowly reached out a shaking hand to the bandage on the girl's face and pulled it down. Two cut wounds gaped on the pale face, dead eyes looked straight at their killer, endless hatred was visible in them. The girl slowly took out long scissors from under her coat and asked again: “So, am I still beautiful?” Before Kazuo could open his mouth to scream, Yumiko began delivering sharp blows to her once beloved husband's stomach. She chopped him until the upper part of the body was separated from the lower. Yumiko stood and calmly looked at the two parts of the man who once took her life. There was no relief. No bright light appeared from the sky to receive the vengeful spirit, having achieved its goal, into its heavenly embrace. There was still emptiness inside and an irresistible urge to kill. Suddenly a child’s voice came from behind: “What about uncle?” Yumiko turned around and saw a five-year-old girl who was looking at Kezuo's bloody body with confusion. The girl did not answer what happened to her uncle; now she was interested in only one question, the answer to which could be the last in the girl’s life: “Am I beautiful?”

Cases[edit]

This legend itself has been known since the Edo period, when a woman was depicted covering her face with a kimono.

However, it gained its greatest popularity at the turn of the 1970s-1980s, causing real panic. Many people have claimed to have actually seen Kuchisake-onna, and she allegedly killed many children between the ages of 4-10. Some schools and colleges even suspended classes, parents brought junior students to and from school, and police patrolled campuses.

There are even reports that the administration of some Japanese schools and colleges at that time allegedly recommended that children go home accompanied by adults or at least in groups.

At the same time, they remembered that in 1968, the skull of a woman was found in the country, whose mouth was cut from ear to ear. But the real reason for the spread of the legend was, most likely, a real incident on June 21, 1979, which occurred in the city of Himeji, when a mentally ill 25-year-old woman was arrested, wandering the streets with a kitchen knife, with which she had previously cut her mouth to ears.

In 2004, South Korea was flooded with reports of a woman in a red mask who was preying on children.

In 2007, an investigator found an old case from the late 1970s about a woman who was chasing her children but was hit by a car and died shortly thereafter. Her mouth was torn from ear to ear.

Ubume

3. Ubume can probably be called the saddest ghosts in Japan. These are the spirits of women who died during or after childbirth. They cannot leave our world because of their attachment to their children. If the baby survives the birth, the ubume will go to the store and try to buy him clothes and food, using the fallen leaves as money.

If the baby died along with the mother, she will not be able to leave the place of her death. The unfortunate woman will appear here again and again in the form of a bloodied woman with a child. Sometimes she is seen still pregnant or already deceased, but with an underdeveloped fetus in her hands.
