History of construction and reconstruction
Wooden bridges in the lower reaches of the Moscow River, in the area of the Novospassky, Simonov monasteries and the Krutitsky courtyard, have been known since the time of Ivan the Terrible. Sources mention six different places where such bridges existed at different times.
In 1911, the steel Novospassky Bridge was built according to the typical three-span arched design for Moscow (span formula 40.54 + 46.99 + 40.54 m). Each span was supported by 14 double-hinged steel arches (of constant height, I-section), placed at intervals of 1.524 m. The lifting boom of the arches was 3.7 m in the central span, 3.3 m in the side spans. The upper structure was made of riveted I-beams, with a wooden end paving (checkers height 13 cm) on top of the Zore beams.
Novospassky Bridge
In 1937, the bridge was reconstructed in order to expand the navigable clearance (to a height of 8.6 m with a width of 30 m) and to provide a two-level intersection of the bridge's roadways and embankments. The bridge supports were built up by 2.76 m according to the design of Yu. F. Werner, N. B. Sokolov and Yu. N. Yakovlev, and bank spans and staircases were added. The total length of the bridge with approaches reached 502 m, width 21.2 m. The wooden pavement was replaced with asphalt concrete.
In 2000, the bridge was rebuilt according to the design of R. P. Nazarova (JSC Giprotransmost). The upper structure and load-bearing arches were completely dismantled and replaced with a continuous beam structure according to the scheme 44.46 + 52.37 + 44.46 m with an orthotropic slab. The beams are “camouflaged” with narrow curved aprons in an attempt to imitate an arched structure.
The bridge is damaged... The beams look extremely bad. Apparently, the developers themselves realized this and therefore decided to install vertical sheets on the outside, trying to present the bridge as an arched one. It was done clumsily. In addition, when traffic moves across the bridge, these sheets vibrate[1]
Second walk on river buses in the center of Moscow
This river boat trip is very similar to the first one, which was described above. The cost is approximately the same. Tickets can and should be purchased online, because tickets at the pier are much more expensive, and you may simply not get a seat.

Story
The location of wooden bridge structures across the Moscow River near the Simonov and Novospassky monasteries has been mentioned in various sources since the reign of Ivan the Terrible. Of course, they could not survive to our time. And the Novospassky arch bridge, which consisted of 3 spans and was built at the beginning of the last century in 1911, and then rebuilt in the late 30s, is considered one of the oldest in the capital.
The reconstruction of the bridge was caused by the need not only to increase the navigable dimensions of the structure, but also to improve traffic conditions, for which it was planned to implement a two-level intersection of the roadways of the bridge and embankments. The project by engineer Yu. Wagner and architects N. Sokolov and Yu. Yakovlev practically envisaged the construction of the bridge from scratch. We only used the bull supports of the old structure. The bridge was actually raised only 3 meters, greatly increasing its length, which amounted to just over five hundred meters.
Coastal passages also appeared and the structure was equipped with convenient staircases leading to the granite embankments. The asphalt concrete surface replaced the wooden decking of the roadway, the new railing received a completely different design, and mast lamps began to illuminate the bridge crossing. In a word, as a result of the reconstruction, the capital acquired a bridge that began to meet the urgent needs of the new life of Moscow.

The Novospassky Bridge pier is a wooden deck. There are no benches or canopies from the sun and rain for passengers waiting for their river boat. Caring shipowners install several plastic seats. There is a ticket office of the Capital Shipping Company here, where you can purchase tickets and find out the schedule. Tickets can also be purchased directly on the ship during boarding.
Mooring ships do not stay here for long, as the berth is paid. A twenty-minute stop costs shipowners more than eight thousand rubles. So, as a rule, a stop is made only to disembark passengers and board new ones.
Therefore, having planned a walk and choosing the “Novospassky Bridge” (pier) for landing, it is better to find out the departure schedule of the ship you are interested in in advance, especially since there are a lot of them coming here, and it is easy to miss what you need while watching the ships of different sizes arriving and departing. On weekdays, ships depart after about 40 minutes, on weekends – after 20.
