Story
Receiving its name in honor of the commander-in-chief Peter Bagration, the bridge was opened in the first month of autumn 1997, exactly for the 850th anniversary of Moscow. The construction project belongs to the experienced architect B.I. Thor. The bridge connects the two banks of the Moscow River. It ends with the lobby of one of the Moscow City skyscrapers from the Krasnopresnenskaya embankment and is part of a structure called “Tower 2000” from the Taras Shevchenko embankment. The landmark has also become one of the main pedestrian “arteries” across the river. Although everyone is now actively using this facility, when it was built, not all the public accepted it, calling it a “bridge to nowhere.” This is due to the absence at that time of the Moscow City complex, where only many industrial enterprises were located at that time. As the years passed, skyscrapers in the business district were erected, and only then did city residents realize the need for a pedestrian bridge and appreciate its significance.
Now the Bagration Bridge carries both a practical and cultural and educational meaning. Various kinds of exhibitions and expositions have already been held there more than once. Moreover, in October 2004, the sculpture “Tree of Life” by Ernest Neizvestny appeared in the bridge lobby, which became an integral part of this place and its decoration.
History of creation
The Bagration Bridge is one of the few Moscow City objects that were built in accordance with the original plan of the ideological mastermind of the entire project, B.I. Thor. Its creation was planned in the early 90s of the twentieth century, but due to a lack of funds, construction of the bridge began only a few years later. Since the construction of a complex of skyscrapers for the future Moscow international business center had already been approved, the need to create a bridge that would provide direct access to the future concentration of the capital's business life became very urgent.
The team of workshop No. 6 of Mosproekt-2, under the leadership of Boris Ivanovich Thor himself, worked on the creation of a project for a grandiose pedestrian bridge across the Moscow River. The duties of the designer in this project were performed by V.I. Traush. By the way, the bridge received its name in honor of the commander Peter Bagration, who commanded the 2nd Western Army at the beginning of the War of 1812.
Thus, the Bagration Bridge became the first structure from which the entire history of the creation of Moscow City began. Its opening was timed to coincide with the 850th anniversary of Moscow, celebrated in September 1997, and almost immediately it became one of the most striking capital attractions. The former mayor of the capital, Yuri Luzhkov, was directly involved in this event. He enjoyed walking through the galleries of the building on the opening day, appreciated the ease of movement and paid tribute to the skill of the architects.
Although the transformation of a bridge into a large trading platform is relatively extravagant for modern society, it is not new. Something similar was practiced several thousand years ago in Ancient Rome, as well as in the Middle Ages. Perhaps it was from the origins of history that B.I. Thor borrowed the idea of creating a shopping and pedestrian bridge, where many retail outlets would be located, and passers-by would be completely protected from the weather and would be able to make purchases in comfortable conditions on the way to work.
In 2004, it was transferred to the management of , which at that time already managed the Tower-2000 complex. In the autumn of the same year, in the lobby of the bridge, located on the side of Krasnopresnenskaya embankment, the opening of the sculptural composition “Tree of Life” took place, which came out from under the light hand of Ernst Neizvestny. It is a 7-meter tree, in the crown of which you can discern a portrait of Yuri Gagarin, a Christian crucifix, erotic symbols, the outlines of Buddha, a Mobius strip and even biblical scenes. “The Tree of Life” was a gift from the world-famous sculptor to Moscow and one of the few of his works that can be seen for free.
In 2008, it was decided to insure the bridge. The contract was concluded with Oranta Insurance, the maximum amount of insurance payment of which was 300 million rubles. But at the very beginning of 2016, insurance obligations were transferred to Rosgosstrakh, and the total cost of the contract was 771.4 thousand rubles.
The Bagration Bridge underwent reconstruction in 2021. It did not involve changing any design features, but updating the interiors and the design concept of the galleries as a whole.
Description
Architect B.I. Thor competently thought out not only the functional component of the building, but also the aesthetic one. You just need to look at the photo of the Bagration Bridge in Moscow to definitely want to come to the capital and see this landmark with your own eyes. Smooth outlines of the structure, a fully glazed lower tier and a partially glazed upper tier - all this significantly lightens the bridge, making it not so rough and cumbersome. Panoramic views from the observation deck on the second floor attract many travelers, photographers and simply lovers of city beauty. Literally every day wedding and walking photo sessions are held here against the backdrop of the high-rise buildings of the Moscow business district.
The functionality and practical use of the bridge do not suffer from its aesthetics. Bagration is not just a walking way to get to the other side, it is a full-fledged shopping complex with its own infrastructure. In addition to walking, here you can go to a store, a trading post and buy yourself some goodies and many different things, or go to a cafe or restaurant with a picturesque view and enjoy a delicious lunch. It is this feature that makes the bridge a unique object, because although this kind of trade bridges are far from uncommon all over the world, there are practically no such bridges in Russia, which is another reason to get to know it better. Another “highlight” of the Bagration Bridge is the presence of travelators throughout the entire glazed gallery on the second floor, which allows residents rushing to work in Moscow City or tourists late for transport to quickly cover the total length of the bridge of 214 m.
History of construction
The Bagration Bridge was developed by the team of workshop number 6 of Mosproekt-2. The work was supervised by architect B.I. Thor. The designer of the structure was V.I. Trausha.
The idea of creating such a bridge appeared in the early 90s of the last century, but was not implemented due to lack of funds.
The start of construction of Moscow City helped breathe life into the project, since such a large-scale project required pedestrian access from the Taras Shevchenko embankment.
The biggest difficulty was due to the fact that at the site of the proposed construction there was a huge industrial zone, so it was necessary to dismantle the equipment of more than 22 enterprises, and then remove them along with a huge amount of construction waste. Be that as it may, all this work was completed quite quickly. As for the bridge construction process, thanks to the dedicated work of workers, foremen and engineers, the structure was completed on schedule.

Two decades ago, iconic buildings appeared in the area of Krasnopresnenskaya embankment and Taras Shevchenko embankment - “Tower 2000” and the adjoining “Bagration” bridge. At that time, the famous City skyscrapers were still only on paper or at the foundation pit stage. Thor's idea was to connect the new business district with the residential areas on Kutuzovsky Prospekt using a bridge. The length of "Bagration" is 217 meters and the width is 16 meters. The area of the internal space is 3425 square meters. m. Its lower tier is designed in the form of a covered gallery with panoramic glazing. Cafes, salons, shops and other retail outlets are designed here. The Bagration Bridge was a fashionable Moscow place, featured in music videos, films and TV series of the 2000s. However, during this time, its interior became outdated in a stylistic sense and physically worn out. Therefore, a decision was made to renovate Bagration. © ARCHPOINT
The architects of the ARCHPOINT bureau were faced with the task of rethinking the design of the bridge and making it part of the modern urban environment, a comfortable place for meetings and leisure.. A laconic modern urban style was combined with the ideas of eco-design. Thus, the main finishing materials were light-colored wood, concrete, metal and glass. Outdoor furniture created specifically for this project appeared in the recreational areas and food court. The abundant greenery also references the natural theme. All cafe pavilions are made in the same style and decorated with wood. The walls of the retail outlets are made of glass so as not to block views of the river and city.

The authors used several lighting options for different areas. Plexiglas lamps imitating waves were installed above the retail outlets. The ceiling in the pedestrian area is illuminated by linear lamps located along the beams. Wood-colored lamps were placed above the planting areas. The light pouring from the panoramic windows is reflected from the glossy porcelain tiles that replaced the flooring. Lightboxes with RGB lighting are built into the columns and benches, which emit a warm, calm light during the day, and in the evening they change colors and create a bar atmosphere.
The architects managed to create an urban “place of attraction”. Another successful comfortable public space in Moscow has become more
