Advantages
What are the advantages of 4 and 2 stroke engines?
Advantages of two-stroke outboard motors
- less weight;
- better dynamics;
- lower price;
- ease of maintenance and repair (as a consequence of the simplicity of the design);
- greater reliability (also as a consequence of the simplicity of the design);
Advantages of four-stroke outboard engines
- less noise during operation (especially at low speeds);
- less fuel consumption.
Not all 2-stroke engines require gasoline and oil to be mixed first. Therefore, I did not consider the absence of this procedure when operating 4-stroke engines as an advantage. I also do not present the traditional argument about the stunning resource of 4 strokes due to the lack of both strong evidence for this statement and the irrelevance of this problem for the overwhelming number of powerboaters.
He also did not mention anything regarding the environmental friendliness of engines. This is not relevant for us yet. Whether this is good or bad, the question is not posed bluntly, and there is no reason to think that anything will change here in the near foreseeable future.
Which outboard motor to choose?
The choice of PLM (outboard motor) must be taken very responsibly. Weigh the pros and cons carefully. Consult with more experienced boaters who have had real experience in repair and maintenance of both two-stroke and four-stroke engines.
Any fisherman, faced with choosing a motor, solves several difficult questions for himself.
Which motor to buy:
- Push-pull.
- Four stroke.
- New Japanese.
- Used Japanese.
- New Chinese.
It would seem that the choice is obvious, we go to the store and buy ourselves a new Japanese engine under warranty and all problems are solved! Eh, if everything was so simple, then this note would not have appeared here.
Our desires do not always coincide with our possibilities, and because of this, many problems sometimes arise.
Dry residue
So, when asked why we should overpay for four cycles, we can answer: “It’s quiet and economical.”
Now let’s decide whether this “quiet and modest girl” is worth the cost of a wedding?
It’s easy to talk about “silence” to a person who is not familiar with the subject under discussion. Yes, at low speeds, up to 1000-1200, the four-stroke engine is quiet, and at idle it’s almost inaudible - I remember a couple of times, at first, when I tried to start the already running engine with the key.
