Review of HDX 9.8 outboard motors

Every buyer, when purchasing a boat motor, wants to acquire a well-known and well-established brand. Japanese manufacturers are one of the world leaders in this area. However, prices for products from the Land of the Rising Sun are not affordable for everyone. HDX brand outboard motors can be a worthy alternative. This Chinese company, with fifty years of engine manufacturing experience, has been producing outboard motors for almost 10 years.

The HDX motors produced are aimed primarily at Russian hunting and fishing enthusiasts. The brand's product line includes engines with power from 2 to 90 hp. With. Affordability, simplicity and reliability have made HDX brand outboard motors one of the most beloved among other motors from Chinese manufacturers. And the assigned EPA standard and compliance with European quality standards make the engines worthy competitors of Japanese manufacturers.

About models

Among HDX motors, the HDX T 9.8 BMS R-Series and HDX F 9.8 BMS models are especially popular. These outboard motors, having 9.8 HP engines. pp. are in high demand. This:

• sufficiently powerful units;

• they are not as bulky as their more advanced counterparts.

And one more fact that can attract the attention of potential buyers is that an engine with the specified power does not require registration, unlike more powerful outboard motors.

The difference between the HDX 9.8 outboard motors is that the motor with the T index has a two-stroke engine, and the F index means the presence of a four-stroke power unit.

The engines are made from high-quality aluminum alloy. This material is not subject to corrosion. High-quality multi-layer painting, performed using American consumables, ensures corrosion resistance of all parts of HDX motors.

Characteristics of HDX motors

As already noted, Suzhou Parsun Power Machine is the oldest “player” in the powerboat market. The colossal engineering experience of the company’s employees, combined with high-quality imported components, allowed the Chinese to combine the two main extremes of the market: quality and low price. It is this principle that is expressed in HDX engines: Hondaxes perform well in operation, but at the same time they do not ruin their owner’s wallet.

As for specific characteristics, user reviews of the HDX outboard motor both deservedly praise it and also criticize it a little for mistakes made during assembly. And this is a completely normal situation, since in principle there are no perfect things in the world. The main thing is to correctly assess the pros and cons of the object, which is what we will do right now.

Positive sides

Most often, Hondax owners mention the following positive features of the units in reviews:

  • Users note stable operation - quick start-up, excellent speed retention and an acceptable noise level even during the first run-in of the engine. And after 10 hours of debugging, the engine works without any noticeable interference.
  • Low level of financial expenses - note that this point includes not only the relatively low cost of acquisition, but also subsequent expenses. The fact is that thanks to modern production technologies and the coordinated operation of all components, the engines for the Hondex boat consume fuel quite economically. For example, two-stroke outboard motor HDX 9, 8 hp. consumes approximately 4.3 liters of fuel per hour, while many engines with similar characteristics consume 5 or more liters of fuel in the same time.
  • Increased service life - Hondas demonstrate high resistance to various operating conditions. Intensive operation, difficult weather conditions and even heavily polluted reservoirs are not at all scary for these reliable motors. It is not for nothing that the manufacturer claims to adapt the devices to Russian conditions: HDX is not picky about the quality of fuel and the cleanliness of the reservoir, and can also operate at full power at temperatures down to -7 degrees below zero. Note that with such a PLM on a ship, you can even go to sea without fear, the main thing is to rinse the engine with fresh water after the trip to prevent the deposition of salt sediment.
  • High-quality performance of the devices - NDH engines are made of anti-corrosion aluminum alloy, which allows the design not to lose any of its attractive appearance. The durable American paint, which does not wear off for several seasons, deserves special mention. In addition, after leaving the assembly line, special anodes are installed on each HDX motor to prevent the risk of electrochemical destruction.

Thus, buyers value the HDX outboard engine for reliable and high-quality work that does not require large financial investments. True, not everything with Chinese engines is so smooth, since some components will still have to be replaced. We'll talk about this in more detail in the next section.

Negative points

Complaints about Hondex motors are not so common, however, based on the comments available on the forums of boat motorists, a couple of the most critical problems can be identified:

  • Saving on technological solutions - in pursuit of low prices, the equipment of Chinese engines is slightly reduced. For example, outboard motor HDX 2, 6 hp. not supplemented with the ability to change gears, i.e. In this case, the manufacturer does not provide for reverse gear at all. At the same time, this did not prevent this model from becoming perhaps the most popular in its segment, since the lack of gear shifting does not affect the quality of work so much.
  • The instability of some components is the main scourge of Chinese engines, and not only from the Hondex brand. Again, due to the cheaper design, it is not always possible to set up coordinated operation of all components. As a result, some components fail prematurely and require urgent repairs or complete replacement. For example, experienced users recommend changing spark plugs in HDX engines every 100 engine hours, otherwise the engine may fail at the most unnecessary moment. Owners also advise immediately after purchase to take care of replacing the fuel filter and tighten the hoses so that after some time they do not begin to suck in air.

It turns out that there is also something to criticize the Chinese Hondax engine for. However, it would be fair to note that there are still half as many minuses as pluses. This means that these engines really deserve attention, so we suggest taking a closer look at the features of the NDH engine model range.

Application of motors

Medium power boat motors HDX T 9.8 BMS R-Series (HDX F 9.8 BMS) are a real find for owners of boats weighing up to 110 kg and length up to 4.5 m. They can be installed on both inflatable boats and flat-bottomed boats and by canoe. The power of the HDX 9.8 BMS is enough to go on a glider with two or even three passengers. In addition to being used as main engines on small boats, HDX 9.8 BMS engines can be used as towing or spare engines on boats not exceeding 6 m in length.

HDX outboard motors – features of the product line and popular models

As already noted, Suzhou Parsun Power Machine Co has a fairly extensive product range. But if we talk specifically about the HDX brand, then this brand produces inflatable boats, outboard engines and various boat accessories. Moreover, the line of engines is divided into several series, which we will now analyze.

Push-pull devices

The two-stroke model range includes about two dozen engines with power ranging from 2.6 to 90 hp.

The youngest model has compact dimensions and low weight (up to 10 kg), which is why it is especially loved by owners of small single and double boats. As we have already noted, the HDX T 2.6 CBMS outboard engine is equipped with one gear, but the next model (T 3.6 CBMS) already has a neutral mode. Well, starting with a 5 hp engine. The entire range of engines is equipped with a full set of 3 gears.

By the way, among devices with a power of up to 10 hp. The most popular are 2 models: just a 5-horsepower engine, as well as an HDX 9, 9 hp outboard motor. Both are high-quality clones of similarly powerful Japanese Yamaha engines. HDX analogues show approximately the same reliability, but unlike the Japanese, Hondex engines are less demanding in maintenance (refueling with 92-gasoline is allowed, the recommended mixing ratio of oil and fuel is 1:50).

As for more powerful devices with 10-40 horsepower, they are equipped with two-cylinder blocks and an external gas tank with a volume of 12-24 liters. Note that the line is quite diverse: there are budget models with a minimum of functions, and there are also more expensive ones, but with elements of comfort and safety. And for even more powerful models (50-90 hp), these same comfort elements are already included as standard. By the way, instead of two cylinders, high-power engines use a three-cylinder system.

Engines with 4 strokes

Compared to two-stroke models, the range of four-stroke models is narrow, since there are only a dozen models. However, the demand for more economical, quieter and less environmentally damaging HDX F Series engines is quite high.

The line also begins with a compact engine with 2.6 horsepower, but due to changes in the design, the weight of the engine has increased to 17 kg. Next comes the HDX F 4 BMS outboard motor, followed by models with 5, 6, 8 and 9.8 horsepower. This range of engines is distinguished by a single-cylinder design and a small-volume fuel tank (1 - 1.5 liters, with the exception of 8 and 9.8 hp models equipped with an external 12 liter tank). But fuel consumption is extremely economical: from 1.1 liters per hour for the smallest model to 3.4 for an engine with 9.8 horsepower.

The HDX 15 four-stroke outboard motor begins a line of more powerful engines that ends with the heavy-duty F60 model. Here, the parameters of each engine vary greatly, so the only general characteristics that can be distinguished are the presence of several cylinders. Thus, the HDX F15 and F20 engines are equipped with two cylinders, the F40 model received a three-cylinder system, and the leaders in power, the F50 and F60 engines, are equipped with 4 cylinders. Of course, such models have more weight and fuel consumption, but these disadvantages are justified by high performance indicators.
