About
Pinwheel Meps Aglia
The Mepps Aglia spinner is already a classic.
Behind the shape, Mepps Aglia is almost round due to the design of the petal. Thanks to this design, the petal deflects only 60°, and the spinner itself starts from the first minutes. That is why large Aglia models are always used in still water or in weak currents.
For perch, No. 2 (4.5 g) and No. 3 (6.5 g) are suitable, but for pike, No. 4 (9 g) and No. 5 (13 g). Plays great with slow retrieval even at the very bottom, attracting pike. A strong hydroacoustic and sound wave attracts fish from a great distance.
It can also be carried out in shallow water, over weed beds or near the surface. Mepps Aglia No. 00 (1.5 g), No. 0 (2.5 g) and No. 1 (3.5 g) can be used more or less tolerably during flows, in mountain streams and streams. Typically, spinners with voluminous flies and feathering on hooks are chosen.
Note: Change the treble hook to a more expensive Owner or Gamakatsu. Otherwise, the fish will often break off.
Mepps Aglia color palette:
- Silver;
- Copper;
- Gold;
- Painted in black color Black.
In addition to the listed colors, there are other models of spinners with the Aglia petal, in various colors:
- The Mepps Aglia Décoré spinner is also in classic colors. Although the dots on their petals are bright red or dark green.
- Mepps Aglia Fluo has acidic bright colors.
- The Mepps Aglia TW model has red figures with alternating black dots.
- Mepps Aglia Long (Longue) is used for fishing for pike, perch, ide, chub, roach and rudd. Aglia Long and with a fast flow due to the changed shape of the petal, its shape already resembles an elongated petal of a willow leaf and has a deflection angle of 30°.
When fishing for salmon and trout on fast mountain small rivers, multi-colored Reinbows are better suited.
How to distinguish an original from a fake
The popularity of the Mepps Syclops bait determines its frequent fakes, the cost of which can match the original. But it’s not difficult to distinguish a fake; you just need to carefully examine the spoon.
Sometimes a price that is too low may indicate a counterfeit product. If the product costs the same as the original, you need to pay attention to the details and material of the spoon:
- the petals of the Mepps Syclops spinner are always made of non-ferrous metal, and not of simple steel;
- the clamp of the original petal must be strong and rotate freely;
- bait tees must be sharp and durable;
- The original wire axle is made only of rigid wire that does not bend or break.
It should be remembered that original baits are produced on modern equipment with maximum precision, so defects and defects in them are practically excluded.
Rating of the best models
The range of turntables from Mepps includes a large number of diverse models and modifications that have proven themselves on the positive side. It is problematic to make a clear rating of them, since each spinner shows serious results under certain conditions. Therefore, we will limit ourselves to a brief overview of the most popular baits that are popular among domestic spinning anglers.
Aglia
Mepps Aglia is one of the three basic models that all domestic fishermen know. It has a rounded petal with a rotation angle of about 60 degrees. The spoon is quite stubborn, so it is not suitable for fishing in medium and fast flows. It is used mainly in stagnant bodies of water or in areas with slow flow.
Aglia is one of the basic models of Mepps turntables
The Mepps Aglia spinner can be used to hunt a wide variety of fish that inhabit our waters. Spinner baits with petals No. 000–1 are good at catching perch, “white” predators, small pike, and peaceful representatives of the ichthyofauna. This bait can be used for hunting trout on paid ponds.
Advice! Trout prefer modifications with bright and fluorescent petals.
Lucky John Bonnie Blade Review
Medium and large sizes, as a rule, are relevant for fishing for pike and heavy specimens of perch. The striped robber and the toothy beast will not remain indifferent when such a tasty object, endowed with powerful vibrations and an attractive sound, comes into their field of vision.
Today the company's catalog presents the following modifications of the Mepps Aglia series turntables:
- Classic Aglia;
- Fluo;
- TW;
- PTS;
- Mouche;
- White/Red;
- Platinum;
- Trout;
- Mini Salmon;
- Streamepps.
The Aglia Spinflex spinner deserves special attention. This is a symbiosis of a jig bait and a spinner. Designed for bottom fishing with stepped wiring. Allows you to change the weight of the load and the twister mounted on an open single. For fishing in strong places, the presented model can be modified by equipping it with an offset hook.
Comet
The Mepps Comet spinner is the most versatile bait in the company's range. It has an oval petal, which rotates at an angle of about 45 degrees when inserted. This design allows you to successfully use the turntable in any conditions. It is effective in stagnant reservoirs and shows good results when fishing on rivers.
Black Fury is the most famous spinner from Meps
The universalism of the “Comet” allows the fisherman to hunt any predatory representative of the ichthyofauna. Various sizes of perch, pike, pike perch and asp have repeatedly become its victims. The small size of the bait works for white fish - chub, rudd, ide, dace, trout and even bleak. In northern latitudes, whitefish, grayling and lenka are caught with this spinner. A spoon with blade number 5 is suitable for hunting trophy pike, taimen, and large salmon.
The most famous and, perhaps, the most popular line among Meps Comet is Black Fury. It is a spinner with a black petal, on which a pattern is applied in the form of light green, yellow or red spots. When casting, in addition to its attractive sound, the spinner fascinates the fish visually, imitating small insects, larvae and small fish.
Advice! For catching chub, Mepps Black Fury with petals No. 00–1 is simply irreplaceable; it can compete on equal terms with other baits.
In addition to the classic “Comet” and “Black Fury”, several more modifications of this series of turntables are produced:
- PTS;
- Rainbo;
- Mouche and others.
They are used less often, but with a meaningful approach to fishing on them, they can show impressive results.
Aglia Long
This spoon is no less titled than its predecessors discussed above. It is distinguished by a narrow “willow leaf” type petal, which has a rotation angle of about 30 degrees. Thanks to this design, the spinner has minimal resistance in the water, making it ideal for fishing in the current.
The main advantages of the Mepps Aglia Long spinner are:
- high flight performance;
- stable play at any angle of delivery to the current;
- operability at high wiring speeds.
Aglia Long – designed for current
Aglia Long is intended for rivers. It is successfully used when hunting sheresper and striped robber. Chub and ide respond well to spinners up to size 2; rudd can also take it. In northern reservoirs, grayling, lenok, whitefish, and occasionally taimen become victims of this bait.
Advice! For large fish, it is advisable to use spinners ranging in size from 3-4 numbers.
Today several varieties of Aglia Long are produced:
- Classic with black, copper gold and silver petal;
- Redbo;
- Rainbo;
- Mini Saumon/Rainbo Anguillon.
- Heavy;
- Cast.
The last two modifications are designed for long-distance casting. They have a weighted core machined into the shape of a bullet. The Meps Long Heavy spinner is equipped with an elongated blade and is primarily used for fishing asp. Meps Long Cast has an oval petal, like the “Comet”, and performed well in calm water.
Lusox
A front-loaded spinner, positioned as a specialized lure for pike. It was developed taking into account fishing in conditions where it is necessary to carry out ultra-slow retrieval in any horizon, without losing the effectiveness of the bait.
Mepps Lusox spinners have proven to be catchable baits on various oxbow lakes, backwaters, other branches from the riverbed, lakes, ponds, and in the coastal zone of reservoirs. In the current, the spoon is not so productive, although it remains operational and allows you to tempt the fish to bite.
Advice! On pike currents, it is better to use the Meps Cyclops oscillating spoon.
In addition to the toothy beast, the bait copes well with catching perch and pike perch. The striped robber of medium and large caliber especially loves this spoon. With the help of Lusox from Mepps, you can qualitatively fish riffles and dumps at shallow depths, where there is a high probability of finding well-fed, hungry individuals.
Mepps Lusox catches pike regularly
The Lusox series turntable is available in four sizes. The largest petal, number 3, is surrounded by a lead head weighing 20 grams. This is quite enough to thoroughly fish areas of reservoirs with depths of up to 5–6 meters.
The Mepps Lusox spinner allows the use of various animation techniques. The basic wiring is uniform with a slow monotonous winding of the line. When fishing near the bottom, the jig “step” shows good results, but this method of wiring is best used on a clean bottom, where the likelihood of a snag is minimal.
How and where to fish with Mepps Syclops lure
Depending on the fishing conditions and the expected catch, you can predict the result of fishing. When fishing for pike, you should use a rigid leash, which will prevent overlaps and possible cuts from a flashy predator.
When fishing in clear water, it is advisable to use silver-colored bait, and in muddy water, a fluorescent spinner.
Each predator behaves differently, the asp prefers the fast retrieve of Mepps Syclops, and the pike prefers the slow retrieve. In turn, the perch reacts more to a jerky feed. And when hunting for spoon bait, you need to use a medium-action spinning rod.
If fishing with Meps Cyclops is carried out in August or September, it is better to catch chub. For universal fishing, you should choose the Meps Cyclops spinner number 1, which can revive even the most unsuccessful fishing.
Spoons of the Cyclops series
The Meps Cyclops oscillating spoon is one of the most popular baits for spinning fishing for pike. Looking at it, it’s immediately clear that the developers worked hard on its geometry. The game of the “Cyclops” in the water is truly unique. When retrieved slowly, this spoon vibrates beautifully, creating the illusion of a peaceful fish slowly moving. At high speed, the “Cyclops” behaves like a victim fleeing persecution, either going deeper or jumping to the surface.
Each Meps Cyclops spinner has an original color. Most models use natural colors: gold, silver, copper. But there are also spinners that have a bright acid coloring. For these purposes, use a special metal varnish in red, green, pink and blue colors.
Silver spoons are more suitable for fishing for pike on rivers, where its main food is narrow-bodied fish with a similar coloring: verkhovka, bleak, crucian carp, roach, etc. “Copper” and “gold” are preferable for lakes where yellow lake crucian carp are found, rudd, perch. But acidic colors are best used in muddy water, regardless of the type of reservoir.
“Cyclops” are classified by size and weight as follows:
- No. 00-0 - ultra-light spoons for fishing on rivers for small predators (4 and 5 cm, weighing 5 and 8 g, respectively);
- No. 1 – medium spoon for small pike and perch (6 cm weighing 12 g);
- No. 2 – classic medium-sized oscillating spoon for pike (7.5 cm weighing 17 g);
- No. 3 is a large model for fishing for trophy pike and pike perch (9 cm, weighing 26 g).
