Fishing on Lake Volgo
Born near the village of Volgoverkhovye, the great Russian river (partly thanks to the help of man - the beishlot below the Volgo) forms four magnificent and unlike one another lakes - Sterzh, Vselug, Peno and Volgo. It is impossible to choose the best of them. The core is shallow, narrow, sinuous; Vselug is the deepest of all, with varied terrain and a predominantly hard bottom; The foam is round, shallow, silted in places, with pronounced rocky shallows; The Volgo is the largest, more than 30 kilometers long, with mostly average depths, silted, with a few and therefore especially interesting holes and shallows.
If you compare these lakes with the nearby Lake Seliger, the first thing that strikes you is their sparse population. The banks of Seliger are densely built up with dachas, the islands are trampled and littered with tourists. There is none of that here.
There are fewer and fewer local residents, dacha construction is very sluggish, but despite this you can find a couple or three cozy villages, tourists concentrate in those places where you can drive right to the shore by car. As a result, the surrounding forests abound with mushrooms and berries, and the lakes with fish.
Paustovsky also proposed dividing fishermen into contemplators and restless ones. Both will find themselves here. You can thoughtfully explore the water area in one place. Or you can, using modern means of transportation on water and ice, roam from lake to lake. The first way, of course, will give a more stable result. But the second one also has the right to life. The fact is that at different times the best bite occurs on different lakes.
For example, sometimes pike perch bites well on steep rocky edges in Lake Vselug; sometimes prefers rocky shallows in Lake Peno; and sometimes it’s easiest to find it next to dense schools of bream on the silted “watering areas” of Lake Volgo. It is unlikely that fish migrate from lake to lake: the channels between lakes are not wide, migrations would not go unnoticed. Rather, our own, local fish are activated due to some reasons unknown to us.
By the way, the channels between the lakes are extremely interesting fishing spots. Perhaps the best of them is between the two parts of the lake. Volgo near the village of Volga. Various depths and currents attract a lot of fish here. It is here that an encounter with a large ide is most likely. The Lemenka River, which flows into the lake a couple of kilometers south of the village of Volga, is also interesting.
Against the backdrop of the wide expanses of Lake Volgo with an average (4-5 m) depth, not only channels, but also holes and shallows concentrate fish. The island of Bely Plav is good in this sense. Its southwestern headland continues with a long sandbar that holds large bass year-round. And to the southeast of the island there is a vast hole, on the slopes of which you can successfully catch pike perch, pike, bream, and in winter - burbot.
In both winter and summer it is easiest to catch bream. If we talk about winter (it’s winter now), to do this, you need to move away from the shore, make sure with the help of a depth gauge, a cutter or a heavy spoon that the depth is at least 5 m, and the bottom is viscous, muddy, and attach several holes at a distance from each other. As a rule, active biting begins on the first day. But still, it’s better to devote the day of the first feeding to searching for perch or arranging the girders, and to work on bream on the second. You can fish for bloodworms with a float or nod tackle, or with a “devil,” but it’s best to alternate these methods. It would be a good idea to set up a tent over one hole and stay on the ice after dark - often larger fish are caught at night.
Perch fishing is also interesting. In addition to the spit near the island of Bely Plav, the rocky spit near the village of Zavirye is interesting; it is called Tolsty Rog. The perch here is large, and pike perch is often found. You can also look for perch in shallow bays, especially at their exits. If you find yourself on the lake in the summer, be sure to notice several areas where pondweed grows. In winter it will be difficult to find them, but it is in these places that perch and roach bite well, and pike do not bypass them.
The most desirable prey is, after all, pike perch. It is not attached to the local flattened bottom topography and prefers to accompany schools of bream. Therefore, if bream is caught well in some place, you should definitely check it with a spoon; meeting with pike perch is very likely. If you look for pike perch “in an open field,” it is better to do this with the help of girders, actively moving them along the reach. When the pike perch indicates itself with a grip, you can switch to the spinner, or you can move the rest of the baits closer to the one that worked. The pike perch here is schooling, so the matter is usually not limited to two or three bites.
It’s also very interesting to fish on Lake Volgo in the spring. But this topic requires a separate discussion.
Where to fish on Lake Volgo
In the shallow grassy bays of the Volgo, hordes of toothy predators hide in the thickets. But you also need to be able to catch pike, perch or pike perch even in such a fertile place for them. Much depends on knowledge of the specific habitats of the toothed ones. Therefore, do not be shy if you are on this lake for the first time. Ask local fishermen about this; they are friendly people and will be happy to suggest fishing spots. Most likely, you will be advised to go to the Verkhnevolzhskaya dam itself, where a whole squadron of predators gathers for the huge amount of fry dumped along with the water.
Fishing on Lake Volgo
The reservoir is shallow, so the water in it warms up quickly. The fish first goes into shallow water, and after spawning again goes into the depths of the lake, into wintering pits. The lake is considered a bream lake, but currently a variety of fish are successfully caught, especially pike perch and pike. Pike perch weighing 6-7 kilos is a fairly frequent visitor to our cages, and pike weighing 8 kilos is also not uncommon. You can also see asp here (though rarely). In winter, if you know where, you can catch large burbot.
According to reliable sources, the Small Volgo is heavily snagged and filled with large bream and pike. The banks are impassable. Perhaps one of the most interesting and beautiful places here is the so-called “pipe” - a body of water connecting the two parts of Lake Volgo. The depths here have very sharp changes - from 2 to 8 meters. With a fairly wide and long mouth, a rather fishy river flows into the right - Lemenka. In the recent past, the cape at the confluence was the end point of the fish, mushroom and berry harvesting trips of tourists from recreation centers located on the lake. The piles of the old bridge, canyon-like underwater cliffs, the shores overgrown with pure forest - everything is conducive to stopping and setting up a fishing camp, if, of course, there is free space.
Once you get into the main lake Volgo, you dissolve in the vast expanse of water - the end of the lake is about 20 km with a width of 3-5 km. More monotonous depths of 3-5 m begin, with individual huge snag holes of 8-9 m each. The shores are a continuous resort: pure pine, sand, in general - full compensation for the sovereign Baltic states.
In the last third of the lake there is the island of Bely Plav, very beautiful, overgrown with forest. A large sand spit runs away from it, on the slopes of which it is easy to find perches, around there are thickets of reeds, uruti, arrowhead, etc. Well, there is no need to say what kind of ichthyofauna is in the named ichthyoflora. On both sides of the island there are villages: Zavirye, which is considered a fishing village, and Bor Volgo. And Zavirye is considered a fishing zone because right behind the island there is a huge wintering pit with large pike perch, not even a pit, but some kind of pocket of fish and an echo sounder, if there is one, does not have time to count the fish.
Fishing
Lake Volgo is one of the most popular fishing spots in the Tver region. For a long time it was considered a bream fishery, but currently it is home to a large variety of fish. Particularly common, according to local fishermen, are pike perch and pike. Asp also bite, but much less frequently, and in winter you can even catch burbot if you choose the right place. Large-sized individuals are not uncommon in the waters of Lake Volgo. Pike perch often reaches 6–7 kg, and the weight of especially pike can be 8 kg. It is worth noting that the reservoir is considered shallow, so the water in it warms up quite quickly. Before spawning, the fish are found in shallow water, and then move into the depths of the lake.
Due to the impressive size of the lake, fishermen arriving for the first time often cannot decide on the place and method of fishing, so we recommend that you study the main most fishing areas of the reservoir in advance. These include the stretch, stretching for 7 km from the island of Bely Plav to the village of Selishche. The depth in this area is monotonous and rarely exceeds 6.5 m. But despite this, a wide variety of fish bite here. It is easiest to catch medium-sized roach; individuals reach approximately 20 cm in length. Large bream also bite from the shore.

The mouth of the Studenets stream, which is located to the right of the pier on the wild beach of the Chaika camp site, is also a fairly catchy place. In the summer heat, you can catch four to five bream weighing about 1.5 kg in a row. Pike perch and pike are easiest to find in those parts of the lake where the depth is greater than average. For example, on the right bank opposite the “Chaika” between the village of Bor Volgo and a sandy cliff, and also just above the village of Bor Volgo. Pike perch almost always bites there, since the depth starts almost from the very shore. The area between the village of Zavirye and the island of Bely Plav is also interesting, since representatives of the entire ichthyofauna of the lake are found there.
All fish in Lake Volgo are caught mainly with worms. According to the recommendations of experienced fishermen, it is better to use a golden-colored twister and a jig with a worm as gear.

Fishing on Lake Volgo.
It was not difficult to persuade me. We are going to a very beautiful lake. Good company. Why not spend the weekend outside the dacha? The road was a little confusing.
One of the components of a good holiday on the Volga is the contemplation of beautiful nature. The intoxicating fresh air brings thoughts of the sublime. God created the beauty that surrounds us, and we must respect His creation.
A little about Lake Volgo. It is located somewhat to the west of Lake Seliger, filling a huge furrow, with clusters of boulders left by the Great Glacier scattered here and there. The necklace of the Upper Volga lakes curved at a right angle from north to east. There are four main lakes included in this cascade: Sterzh, Vselug, Peno and Volgo, not counting the many large and small reservoirs scattered around the area, connected by rivers and channels. The largest of this group of lakes is Lake Volgo. The uniqueness of this lake lies in its two-dimensionality (Small and Big Volgo) and our Volga flows from it.
Although the source of the Volga is located many kilometers from this place, I had the opportunity to be there and stand on both banks at once.
According to reliable sources, the Small Volgo is heavily snagged and filled with large bream and pike. The banks are impassable. That's exactly where we arrived. What struck me was the following... A small peninsula covered with birch trees and many, many cars, boats and tents. There are ropes stretched between the birch trees, on which belongings of different sizes hang. My indignation knew no bounds. What kind of vacation is this? Dormitory! It's good that they took a place for us. We settled in and had dinner. Another wonder! No one makes fires and no one sings songs... But where is the romance of the hike? Where: “The smoke of a fire creates comfort...The sparks smolder and go out on their own...”? Everything is new - gas stoves and music from the receivers. The night passed relatively quietly, only young people were frolicking on the other distant shore. Our peninsula was sleeping.
It's dawning...a beautiful morning of a new day!
Fishermen slowly crawl out of all the tents, prepare their boats and row away from the shore so as not to wake anyone. Only women and children remain on the shore. Everyone is still sleeping. The weather is amazing.
I'm bored with nothing to do. It's still too early to swim and sunbathe. Chilly. Shouldn't I catch some fish too? I fed it, threw it... It bites. I caught a few small fish.
One of the awakened Penelopes (that’s what I nicknamed all the women on this peninsula), was indignant about the size of my fish: “Was it worth going such a distance? and for this one?!” And suddenly a powerful bite! It’s good that I managed to grab the fishing rod... The result was amazing! Quite a decent bream! I also threw in another identical twin bream. Penelopes and their children came running to look at my catch...
Throughout the day, boats with successful fishermen went to the shore, leaving their catch and going back for more prey.
Map of Lake Volgo for navigator
You can plot a route for your car by entering the name of the place from where you want to leave and where to get there.
Enter the names of points in the nominative case and in full, with the name of the city or region separated by a comma. Otherwise, the online route map may show the wrong path. The free Yandex map contains detailed information about the selected area, including the boundaries of regions, territories and regions of Russia. In the “layers” section, you can switch the map to “Satellite” mode, then you will see a satellite image of the selected city. The “People's Map” layer shows metro stations, airports, names of neighborhoods and streets with house numbers. This is an online interactive map - it cannot be downloaded.
Nearest hotels (hotels, hostels, apartments, guest houses)
View all hotels in the area on the map
Five nearby hotels are shown above. Among them there are both regular hotels and hotels with several stars, as well as cheap accommodation - hostels, apartments and guest houses. These are usually private economy class mini-hotels. The hostel is a modern hostel. An apartment is a private apartment for daily rent, and a guest house is a large private house, where the owners themselves usually live and rent out rooms for guests. You can rent a guest house with an all-inclusive service, a bathhouse and other attributes of a good holiday. Check with the owners for details here.
Usually hotels are located closer to the city center, including inexpensive ones, near the metro or train station. But if this is a resort area, then the best mini-hotels, on the contrary, are located further from the center - on the seashore or river bank.

Fishing on Lake Volgo
I returned from fishing, so I want to share my good impressions with you. We traditionally went to Lake Volgo and stayed there for a week. Imagine: a week in the fresh air, surrounded by beautiful nature, without TV, when you don’t carry a cell phone with you...
We caught mainly pike and perch using spinning rods; we also caught two small pike perch. It’s hard to describe how pleasant it is to drag the pecked prey – you have to try it! When you feel how the fish kicks at the end of the line, how it tries to spit out the wobbler, writing a “candle” upward, how it goes into the grass (bushes), from where it is more difficult to get it, and the final stage (if you are luckier this time) - when you put a fish in a landing net and lift it into the boat.
Fishing on Lake Volgo has become more difficult in recent years. It's hard to say for what reason, but it bites much worse. To catch each specimen, you have to row kilometers (swimming) and look for it in the grass, constantly making hooks. The more you experience joyful feelings when catching each fish.
Large specimens are rarely found, mostly pike 0.8 - 1.5 kg. This is our average catch for three people for a morning fishing on Lake Volgo using a spinning rod from ordinary rubber boats with oars.
More and more often, “advanced” fishermen are found on the water who use electric boat motors - quiet and economical to operate, but we, the old-fashioned way, wind up kilometers on oars. There is a lot of sailing on a boat and it’s hard on the fisherman’s “back seat”, so we soften the wooden seats in the boats (easy “tuning” of the boat) by attaching soft building insulating material to them with tape
In addition to the fishing itself, communication with fishermen is also enjoyable - discussing interesting points, telling tales, sharing experiences. And we have someone to learn from!
Alexey Ukhanov is our main fisherman and trip organizer, a fishing fan. Previously, he fished in the sea on large ships, now in rivers and lakes by boat and from the shore. From him we learn to determine the weather for tomorrow by sunset (90% probability), use new baits and tackle. And his hands are “golden”! This time it turned out that in the process of fighting with the caught pike (it is visible in the photo in the boat), our other companion Alexei cut the boat with a tee and it began to lower. We were fishing nearby and when we heard the “SOS signal”, the “in distress” Alexey moved into my boat, and our main fisherman Alexey offered to seal the boat right on the spot using instant glue (he happened to have) and a piece of material from the OZK raincoat, which we take it in the boat in case of rain. The whole process of repairing the boat took less than half an hour and fishing continued.
And this is our parking lot on the shore - in a wonderful pine forest
This time I caught all the pikes with one YO-ZURI 3D MINNOW 70 wobbler
The trip was a success. The main thing we took away from it was good impressions with a slight feeling of fatigue from getting up early and physical activity, a week of unshavenness...
I hope this trip was not the last. God grant that we have the opportunity to see the beauty of Lake Volgo more often.

Lake Volgo
In the endless expanses of the Valdai Hills lies an amazing system of various lakes. Nature created the reliefs of these unreal places with scrupulous precision, and the result was the beauty that we see today.
The lakes that are present there can be listed endlessly, but I would like to talk about one of the most magnificent lakes in Russia and the world - Lake Volgo.
It is located in the Tver region, just to the west of another beautiful lake in this region - Seliger.
Since the lake is very long, the topography of the shore, as well as the depths, is very variable. So, if at the beginning of Lake Volgo you find yourself in a certain windfall where no human has ever walked, then the further you move, the more fairy-tale-like places open up to you.
The shore becomes less steep, and somewhere you can already see giant trees, which with their grandeur inspire calm. As you approach the final part of the lake, you will see a view of the magnificent island created by Mother Nature - White Plav.
This island, like a great city, rises above the water and provides shelter to all its inhabitants, who make up the special flora and fauna inherent in this particular place.
And it feeds not only local animals and fish, but also the people who have settled in these protected forests. And people are grateful to their ancestor.
And as the last outpost at the end of Lake Volgo stands the village of Selishche, after which, however, the great Volga River begins its course. But even there, this run begins somehow smoothly and reluctantly, as if the smooth flow of Lake Volgo is further transmitted to the Volga River, without disturbing the idyll.
And I want us to be able to preserve this pristine, amazing land, which man almost destroyed, for future generations.
Fishing on Lake Volgo
The lake is divided into Small and Big Volgo. Small Volgo is a kind of “paradise” for both fishermen and fish, since the presence of good depths allows the fish, as they say, to roam, and therefore very decent specimens live in the depths, but for fishermen such a place, albeit with impassable shores, a good chance to get the long-awaited trophy.
At a time when local residents did not understand what a “miracle they were destroying”, tens of tons of fish were destroyed, and if they had not stopped, an environmental disaster would have occurred.
And as soon as people stopped behaving like barbarians, the lake reciprocated, and now even after sitting with a fishing rod you can catch such fine bream that they will break not only the fishing line, but also the fishing rod in half.
This lake is especially rich in pike perch, pike, and perch. Immediately behind Bely Plav Island there is a large wintering hole where large pike perch hunt. The echo sounder doesn’t even have time to count it!
Rest on the Volgo
Lake Volgo is a great place for a savage to relax. As for recreation centers and tourist centers, the choice here is small. It is worth noting the Chaika recreation center with its double wooden houses scattered through the forest along the shore.
The base has a large boat park where you can rent a boat for short or long periods. If you want more comfort, you can go to relax on Seliger or Lake Peno, which are located nearby.
