New buildings around the TOP 10 largest parks in Moscow

Parks are called the lungs of the city. Green islands of tranquility in the middle of the concrete jungle. Here the eye takes a break from the brightness of advertising and gray walls, and the ear takes a break from the endless noise, which only remains somewhere in the distance.

In the parks, parents walk with their children, teenagers hang out, and couples walk around and around, unable to stop talking.

A huge metropolis like Moscow would not be able to do without parks. Almost every microdistrict has a small green corner where you can relax from the hustle and bustle.

But in this article we will talk about the ten largest parks in Moscow. These are not just trees, paths and benches. Each has its own story, each is a landmark in itself with its own characteristics and history.

Park of Culture and Leisure named after. M. Gorky

A wonderful example of how a well-thought-out style completely changes the entire atmosphere and, in general, the essence of a place. Just a few years ago, Gorky Park was a disconcerting mixture of a provincial amusement park and a Cheburek. But then the young and talented came, demolished the shawarma tents, dismantled the plastic attractions, and in their place they laid out beach volleyball courts, laid bike paths and connected wi-fi.

You can even walk your dogs here, taking into account the fact that you have to pretend to be a European and clean up after the dog. You can come to the park early in the morning, sit under a tree and have a picnic. And in the late afternoon, go to the summer cinema “Pioneer” and watch a movie or listen to a lecture, and then go to the Moskva River embankment, where on summer evenings, tango, bachata and capoeira lovers traditionally gather to dance. In winter, the park has a wonderful skating rink with non-melting ice. Read others

Gorky Park

Gorky Park is the central park of Moscow, which stretches over 200 hectares. Despite its long history, thanks to the leadership and government of the city, the space remains modern, meeting all the requirements for a recreational space.

Entrance to the territory is always free, in addition, wi-fi is available here. But you won’t need it, because there are so many activities in the park that you can’t try them all in a whole day. Sights, art spaces, sports grounds and rental of sports equipment, various classes, seminars and lectures, playgrounds and a lot of different events.

The entire area is equipped with bike paths and is also friendly for people with reduced mobility. You can get to the park from a number of metro stations: Park Kultury, Vorobyovy Gory, Oktyabrskaya, Leninsky Prospekt.

Muzeon

Directly opposite Gorky Park, Muzeon is located. In general, it’s difficult to call it a park - rather an open-air museum among trees and flower beds. The place is famous for its monuments - here, for example, the infamous “Iron Felix”, dismantled in the 90s, is located here, as well as some works by Mukhina and other Soviet monumentalists. A walk among the granite busts of Marx, Lenin and the only surviving monument to Stalin in Moscow will not be so gloomy if you also admire the opening day of paintings in the open air (the proximity to the Tretyakov Gallery makes itself felt) and take a walk among the rose bushes in the rose garden. The park offers a variety of excursions and unusual entertainment, such as a battle between children and parents on cardboard tubes in honor of the 70th anniversary of the victory at Stalingrad.

Losiny Island

Losiny Ostrov Park is located in the north-east of Moscow and covers part of the Moscow region. Its area is almost 120 km², and it is one of the first protected national parks in Russia.

In addition to scenic trails and picnic areas, visitors to the park may be interested in the elk biological station, where they can interact with live elk. An arboretum is a wildlife reserve that also functions as an educational facility.

At the horse yards you can admire the horses and even ride one of them. In the park you can see wild elk, many of them come out to people. Thus, students of the MSSU university, which is located near the park, have more than once encountered wild animals on the territory of their institute.

Boring Garden

If you leave Gorky Park on the embankment and go towards Luzhniki, then gradually there will be fewer and fewer hipsters and ice cream stalls, and the trees will be higher and higher. This part of Moscow is one of the few secluded and wild places. If you want to hide from the bustle in the middle of almost a forest, then this is your option. You can not be sad in Neskuchny thanks to the tennis courts, the Belaya Ladya chess club, a library-reading room and picturesque landscapes. The former owners of these places - the Demidovs, Golitsyns and Trubetskoys - grew pineapples, grapes and palm trees here. Now, you need to have fun in Neskuchny, looking for personalized bricks dating back to the 18th century among the stone steps, seclude yourself with your lovers in various grottoes and gazebos and kiss on the brick arched “bridge of lovers”; they say, be so in love together until the end of your days. Here, among the centuries-old trees, the famous Hunting Lodge is hidden - the location of the filming of the program “What. Where. When".

The best relaxation in nature

There are many similar recreational facilities in the metropolis. For privacy in a calm environment, choose the best parks in Moscow. Only in nature can you get a boost of energy and step away from daily hassles. City parks are perfect for walks with the family or in solitude.

Tourists visiting the capital for the first time should use the services of guides. When planning excursion routes around Moscow, they will guide city guests through the best gardens and public gardens, and introduce them to the history and sights of these places.

Hermitage Garden

Compared to Neskuchny, this garden is like a shiny new iPhone compared to a vintage home phone. Small, compact and wonderfully eclectic. Here you need to gnaw on roasted almonds, which are sold from antique-style stalls, feed squirrels and pigeons, buy hand-made things and attend all sorts of festivals and concerts, which are held here in considerable numbers. This garden is also terribly theatrical: on its territory there are the New Opera, the New Sphere and the Hermitage theaters. And you can discuss what you saw in “Chaikhona” or “Parisian Life”.

Kolomenskoye Park

It is thanks to such places in the city that Moscow opens up to guests of the capital from a different – informal and cozy side. About 400 hectares of green space: hills, meadows, gardens and wild groves create a complete feeling of a rural idyll. These places recreate the atmosphere of the royal lands of the times of Alexei Mikhailovich: there are gardens, beehives, ancient churches and museums. It’s good to bring girls here in May, because the famous apple tree alleys create a popular backdrop for spring avatars on social networks. And if she is also a mystically inclined young lady, then take her to a local landmark - Golosovoy Ravine, where two ancient stones are located. One, according to legend, brings offspring to the woman who sits on it. The second solves men's problems. Around the stones you can always find aunties charging their wallets, tying wish ribbons to nearby trees and collecting water from the stream flowing nearby.

How many parks are there in Moscow?

The city has a large number of parks of various types. However, answering the question of how many parks there are in Moscow is not easy. It all depends on what is included in them. The total number of parks is dozens, and if we include small green recreation areas among them, there will be more than a hundred of them. How many large parks are there in Moscow? There are only a few such parks. After all, the city is quite densely built up, and there are not very many free places.

Tsaritsyno Park

The recently restored museum-reserve is famous for the fact that it is the residence of Catherine the Great, which, however, she almost never visited. The Empress died without waiting for the end of construction. There is little left of the old estate, but this should not worry you when you walk along the paths of Tsaritsyno: in the end, what difference does it make whether there are real walls here or not? We are in Moscow. Around there is a beautiful park with paths, various kinds of excursions are held: environmental and historical. Inside the building itself is also interesting: you can look at collections of porcelain, ceramics, leather goods, metal, glass and textiles from different eras. All kinds of bridges, pavilions, arches and grottoes - this place, perhaps most of all, wants to echo similar ensembles in St. Petersburg, although, of course, it still remains typically Moscow.

VDNH

The Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy and the park around it were located at the metro station of the same name. This is a real landmark and pride of Moscow, which is a mandatory item in any excursion program. And there really is something to see here.

The impressive sculpture “Worker and Collective Farm Woman”, incredibly beautiful buildings of the exhibition complex, fountains with sculptural compositions - if this is your first time at VDNKh, it is simply impossible to move your camera to the side.

In 2014, VDNKh was merged with the Botanical Garden, and now the park area exceeds 300 hectares. There is also an amusement park, street cafes, and one of the largest ice skating rinks in Moscow in winter.

Sokolniki Park

Sokolniki is a former forest in which Russian tsars and emperors of several eras hunted. Elm trees, ash trees, larches and two beautiful rose gardens are for lovers of nature and quiet walks along the paths of such parks. In winter they go ice skating and slides, and for the whole summer, the “The Swimming Pool” project opens - a summer area with two swimming pools, sun loungers, bars, aerobics and an outdoor yoga club. An excellent substitute for a trip to the country or the sea for hard workers left in the city. Various events are constantly held in Sokolniki, such as an ice cream festival, a photographer's day, or a festival of British culture. And if such large forests scare you, then there is good news - it is in Sokolniki that city authorities are soon planning to install experimental “security booths” - brightly lit glass booths with an alarm button and an operator at the other end of the line.

m. Sokolniki

Sokolniki

Sokolniki is one of the largest and most famous parks not only in Moscow, but throughout Russia. Meanwhile, it became a park only in the 30s of the twentieth century; before that it was just Sokolnicheskaya Grove. The grove had a rich history, was the hunting ground of the royal family itself, and became a favorite place for festivities of the Russian nobility and people.

The area of the park is 516 hectares, but the entire territory is conveniently organized for visiting. You can walk along paved paths, enjoying the unique nature, visit the Sokolniki Museum or take part in numerous festivals, exhibitions and events that are held in the park.

In order to enjoy its beauty, you need to get to the street. Sokolnichesky Val 1, building 1, the easiest way to do this is from Sokolniki metro station.

Botanical Garden

Perhaps the most arthouse garden in Moscow. It surpasses other parks and gardens in scale and number of plants, as well as in the degree of desolation. But that's the beauty of it. There is a Japanese garden with its miniature bridges over streams, an arboretum with coniferous and deciduous plants, greenhouses, flower displays, heather and cherry plum. Here you will not find cafes and restaurants, there are no jazz festivals or anything like that. Only more than 6,000 species of tropical, subtropical and other flora. You can come here to get lost, think, be alone and meditate. And of course, there is freedom for couples in love. Excursions are available and even individual ones are possible. In terms of infrastructure, we can recommend smoothly moving to the territory of the All-Russian Exhibition Center adjacent to the garden - there are attractions, cafes, and people.

metro Botanical Garden, metro VDNKh

Pharmacy garden.

The only vegetable garden in the city, although, of course, it is not a vegetable garden, but a garden, and a very beautiful one at that. In general, this is a branch of the Botanical Garden of Moscow State University, but previously medicinal herbs were grown here, and Peter himself was the first to plant three trees with his own hands. One of them, larch, has survived to this day. Of all the botanical gardens in Moscow, at the University on Vorobyovy Gory and the main academic one, this one is the most “shtetl”. It is hidden among residential buildings near Prospekt Mira and is not very big; you need to try hard to find it. But with the arrival of spring, something unimaginable is happening here. Blooming almonds, hyacinths, irises - May is the most picturesque place to visit the Apothecary Garden. There are about one hundred and fifty varieties of tulips here. Throughout the summer you can walk here, drink tea in a cafe and buy rare books about flowers and garden and landscape design.

m. Prospekt Mira

Park "Trubetskoy Estate in Khamovniki"

This park is not as noisy and large as the others, but it is good to come here with children. It is located next to the Frunzenskaya metro station, right behind the Youth Palace. There are no antiquities to be found here, except perhaps a few ancient ponds and canals. But in a small but well-kept space, you can find playgrounds, a roller skating rink, an aviary with squirrels and a mini-zoo with birds. The place is well guarded; smoking, drinking alcohol and walking on the lawns are prohibited here - ideal for a sedate walk with your baby. Another feature of the park is that when the poplars are in bloom, there is literally a snowfall of fluff – there are a lot of these trees. Nice, children's, calm park.

Garden named after N.E. Bauman

The basis of the garden named after N.E. Bauman formed an impressive piece of M.P.’s estate. Golitsyn, which the prince donated to Moscow. Later, parts of other estates were added to them, and the park received its modern boundaries in 1920. Two years later it was renamed in honor of N.E. Bauman and installed his bust in the park.

There is a summer stage here, where the brightest stars of the Soviet Union performed. In winter, a skating rink is built next to the stage. In principle, the garden is not boring at any time of the year: in the summer there are free training sessions and master classes, festive events, a children's center and a theater for the youngest spectators.

Walk to the garden named after. N.E. Bauman can be reached from Kurskaya metro station and Krasnye Vorota metro station, it is located at st. Staraya Basmannaya, 15A.

Park 50th anniversary of October

This is if you live in the southwest of the capital and are too lazy to go somewhere special. Near the Prospekt Vernadskogo metro station there is an excellent space for relaxation, walks, creativity, meetings and quiet picnics. The park is large and not crowded - this is its advantage. It is interesting with a wooden installation in the form of a large table and chairs around. Children especially have fun climbing on these figures, but some adults also enjoy them. There are playgrounds, ponds with water lilies, in the spring you can admire beautiful flower beds and sit in a cafe, in the evening go to the London club nearby - that, in general, is all the attractions, if not for one Moscow legend. Rumor has it that under this idyllic place, in Soviet times there was and remains now, an underground city with a bomb shelter that can accommodate up to 12 thousand people.

Zaryadye Park

Address: Moscow, Zaryadye Park, Kitay-Gorod metro station

A grandiose recreation area opened in the very heart of Russia in 2017 on Moscow City Day. The unique park, in all respects, is spread over an area of 12 hectares and combines 4 landscape zones characteristic of Russia: tundra, steppe, forest, and swamps. Each zone has its own mini-zoo. This is a great opportunity to learn more about our country without leaving the Boulevard Ring. From here you can see almost the entire center of Moscow, and see the Kremlin and its surroundings in every detail. Hermitage Garden

Lefortovo Park

This park is generally considered the first in the capital. It was built back in 1703 and (attention Muscovites) is considered the prototype of subsequent St. Petersburg parks of this kind. He, more than anyone else, brings us closer to Peter the Great, and therefore (extremely distantly) to St. Petersburg. The German Settlement, the place of residence of German employees of the Peter the Great era, was located here. The Moscow residence of the sovereign was located right there and in general, this park was in the past nicknamed “Versailles on the Yauza”. Versailles is not Versailles, but a stone grotto by Rastrelli, bridges and rotundas have been preserved here. Nice old-fashioned atmosphere and a beautiful area nearby. It is also good to ride ponies and horses here.

Now this is a well-groomed, landscaped place where anyone can play sports (sports grounds have been installed), enjoy a bike ride, and take part in summer marathons.

Thanks to its impressive size (465 hectares), Meshchersky is one of the largest parks in Moscow. Work to improve the park area is still ongoing and soon more amenities will appear here, without compromising nature.

Garden "Aquarium"

Completes a small chain of Moscow gardens. You probably don’t need to go to the Aquarium separately, but if you’re going to the theater. Mossovet, there is no better place to end the evening. It was this place that Bulgakov described in “The Master and Margarita” under the name “Variety”, where Woland gave his concerts. By the way, the Aquarium garden is the first point of the famous excursion to the places of the novel, which is held at the Mikhail Bulgakov Museum, which is located right next door, in the entrance of house No. 10 on Bolshaya Sadovaya. Now here you can look at a couple of fountains and sculptures, sit on a bench in the historical center of Moscow, and then, with a feeling of accomplishment, go have dinner at the Starlite Diner - an American hamburger trailer, which, by the way, was the first to appear in Moscow in the 90s last century.

Victory Park

Victory Park is called Poklonnaya Gora among Muscovites. This old name for the area comes from the custom of travelers bowing to Moscow churches from an elevated position upon reaching the city. All sorts of important people were met here. It was for this reason that Napoleon was waiting for the keys to the Kremlin on this mountain, but, poor fellow, he never got it. The mountain is no longer here, but the memorial complex for the victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 is located around it. Here you need to look at the obelisk, 141.8 meters high, which corresponds to every day of the war, visit the central museum and an open-air weapons exhibition. There is also a temple, a mosque and a synagogue here. It is, of course, better to visit the park on May 9, when the fountains of the main alley are illuminated in red and concerts are held on the square. But at other times it’s wonderful here too. There is a natural park around the memorial, where you can completely hide from the sun and breathe in the forest air. In the summer, roller skating and skateboarding are common here, as well as celebrations of newlyweds after the registry office (this is the second most popular place after Red Square with the eternal flame), which gives the memorial a completely peaceful look.

Petrovsky Park

Our list ends with Petrovsky Park. It is located on Leningradskoye Shosse, near the Dynamo metro station. Most of the historical park is reserved for the stadium, and the main attraction of the place is the Petrovsky Travel Palace. Track - because here was the first stop of the royal train from St. Petersburg to Moscow. It is notable for the fact that in 1812 Napoleon’s headquarters were located here. After the great commander burned everything here, it was decided to build an amusement park around the damaged palace. Here you must be imbued with this knowledge and examine the palace from the outside and inside - the furniture, household items and furnishings of bygone eras have been recreated with great precision, and excursions are conducted. The historical evening can be completed with a contemplation of the Sovetsky Hotel - the former Yar, or a visit to the Romany Gypsy Theater, located in the same building.

Zaryadye

Zaryadye is a new park, laid out in the district of Moscow of the same name on the site of the Rossiya Hotel. It was planned to build a shopping or business center in its place, but with the support of the public, it was decided to build a park on this site. As a result, a modern green zone appeared on 13 hectares of the most expensive plot of land in Moscow.

The Zaryadye project was criticized at every stage of construction, but it’s worth visiting the park yourself and deciding whether it turned out the way it was intended: innovative and at the same time conveying traditions.

In addition to four park areas, the territory includes an amphitheater, a concert hall, a media center, an ice cave, and the famous floating bridge. Exhibitions and city events are regularly held here. To get to Zaryadye, you need to get to the Kitai-gorod or Ploshchad Revolyutsii stations.
