The metro station at Kursky Station differs from all other Moscow ones not only in its appearance, but also in its architectural style. Indeed, leading specialist Polyakov, together with experienced engineers Komarov and Kibardin, at one time created its special design - a deep three-vaulted pylon.

To this day, light gray marble clads the station’s pylons. The track walls are framed on top by white glazed ceramic tiles, and on the bottom by black marble. Beautiful lamps are mounted on round ventilation holes, covered with gilded grilles. The vault of the main hall is illuminated by several huge chandeliers that resemble small suns.

Old and new Arbat on the map of Moscow

The Old (as well as the New) Arbat is located in the center of Moscow, in the Central Administrative District, in the district of the capital of the same name. This street starts from Arbat Gate Square, has a length of about 1200 meters and ends at Smolenskaya Square. Old Arbat is located between Prechistenka and New Arbat streets.

New Arbat, in turn, also starts from the Arbat Gate, departs from it at an angle to Old Arbat and after one and a half kilometers ends at Free Russia Square.

From the history of Kievsky Station

At the end of the 19th century, the Kiev-Voronezh Railway Society decided to build a railway from Bryansk to Moscow. Simultaneously with the construction of the road in 1897–1899, in a vacant lot on the outskirts of the capital, in the Dorogomilovskaya Sloboda area, a huge construction project began to build a railway station, and by mid-1899 it was built. On June 29, the station premises were consecrated and on August 1, the first postal and passenger train departed by rail. The station building was elongated with 2 provincial-looking entrances and had a dull appearance, often subject to caricature, and the company that created such a “log house that decorated Moscow” was often criticized. And although the one-story building had a temporary appearance, it stood for more than 10 years, until 1912, when the Board of the Moscow-Kiev-Voronezh Railway decided to build a large station complex.

Construction began with the bridge when, instead of the narrow old crossing of 1868, a new Borodino Bridge was built, the design of which was carried out by the architect Roman Klein with the participation of engineers Nikolai Oskolkov and Mikhail Shchekotov.

The design of the Kievsky station building was developed by architects Ivan Rerberg and Vyacheslav Oltarzhevsky, and the landing stage and platform hall ceilings were developed by Vladimir Grigorievich Shukhov. Construction began in 1914 and ended after the revolution - the first train departed from the new station on February 14, 1918. Most buildings at the beginning of the 20th century were built in the Art Nouveau style, and the new building was different from the rest - it embodied the continuity of antiquity and the new era.

The platform hall is a landing stage adjacent to the station building and has a length of 321 m, a width of 47 m and a height of 30 m. Glazed arched ceilings are installed above its platforms. The area of the central waiting room is 900 sq.m. The decoration of its walls follows the style of the facades. The painting was done by artists Ignatiy Nivinsky and Fyodor Rerberg, and the sculptural compositions were done by Sergei Aleshin. The paintings and sculptures emphasized the connection with the Patriotic War of 1812 - at that time Russian and French troops crossed the Borodino Bridge. There is a mechanical clock on the tower of the station building.

In 1935, in accordance with the General Plan of the capital, the station square was expanded to Dorogomilovskaya Street and the station complex harmoniously fit into the architectural ensemble of the Moscow River and Borodinsky Bridge.

In 1937, the Kyiv metro station on the Filevskaya line was opened, and after the war in 1945, a building with commuter ticket offices and a metro station lobby was built on the north side. In 1953, the Kyiv station of the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya line opened, and the following 1954 - a station on the Circle Line of the metro.

In 1976, new premises for storage rooms appeared, in 1981 restoration work took place, during which the interior decoration of the building was updated and the roof of the platform hall was reconstructed. In 2003–2004, 27 riveted steel floor arches were replaced with welded ones.

Since 2004, the Sapsan high-speed train has connected the station complex with Vnukovo Airport. After checking in and checking in your luggage, you can get to the airport in just 25 minutes.

    • Among all the clocks in the capital, only two clocks are mechanical, the hands of which must be moved manually. This opera is about railway sadness, when you haven’t left yet, but you are no longer here, about waiting for some events. According to director and actor Alexei Zherebtsov, “this is, first of all, an understanding of what a road is, what a station is in our life”
    • In December 2010, New Year's performances for orphans and large families were held at the Kievsky railway station. A stage and decorations were installed on the platform, and inside the waiting room, everyone could take a ride on the children's railway in a small train.
