Today there are fishing gear used for catching fish from the depths, which, despite their antiquity, are still quite actively used. One of such gear is the tyrant - not a complicated, but very effective gear used by fishermen to catch a wide variety of fish.
Samodur has another name among fishermen - “samolov”, which explains the principle of the fishing method. This article is devoted to a detailed disclosure of a special fishing for tyrant, the principle of its operation, as well as how to make a tyrant yourself. In addition, information about the types of fish caught by this gear will be displayed.
Types of fish caught by tyrants
What types of fish can be caught with this gear? In general, the samolov is a predatory tackle, however, there are also peaceful species of fish caught with its help. It involves both catching sea schooling fish and single freshwater fish. This tackle is designed for fishing:
- saberfish;
- smelt;
- Azov bull;
- Black Sea goby;
- Don herring;
- Black Sea herring;
- mackerel;
- horse mackerel.
Sometimes when fishing in the sea you come across katran, bonito, and bluefish. Accordingly, each type of fish uses its own bait, as well as equipment. Samolov is a bottom tackle, which consists of a main and additional fishing line with elastic, short leashes with weights and hooks at the ends attached to it.
It is used for fishing at significant depths. The standard design is not designed for use with a fishing rod. The line is simply wound onto a special reel, with the help of which all the gear is controlled. Some fishermen use the rod to increase comfort when casting and retrieving a caught trophy.
Design and principle of operation of a tyrant
A standard fishing tyrant consists of the following set of components:
- reel or rod;
- main scaffolding (shvorka);
- additional scaffolding (rate);
- leashes;
- sinkers;
- hooks
How is fishing done? You can fish with a tyrant either with a reel, held permanently in your hand, or with a rod. The rod is a hard, short blank (1.5-2.5 m), equipped with a reel. You can use any reel, as long as it is reliable. Today you can buy a tyrant ready-made in any fishing store.
Line and leashes
As the main fishing line, you can use nylon, nylon cord, or monofilament fishing line. The length depends on the fishing depth, however, installing gear with a fishing line less than 50 m is impractical. The thickness is selected depending on the expected catch, as well as the transparency of the water. Basically, the aircraft is equipped with a forest with a thickness of 0.4-0.6 m.
As an additional fishing line, it is better to take a monofilament thread with a diameter of 0.3-0.35 mm, a length of 5-6 m. Leashes are made from fishing line with a diameter of 0.25-0.3 mm, a length of 2-5 m. Long leashes can tangle the fishing line. The number of leads depends on the type of fish being fished for.
On the main line for fishing for mackerel, the leashes are fixed 25-30 cm apart, for mackerel 60 cm. Depending on the length of the additional line (5-6 m), there can be 10-20 of them. Experienced fishermen have several main lines with hooks on leashes designed to catch various types of fish: goby, mackerel, horse mackerel. Such fishermen make tyrants with their own hands at home.
We catch everything
The undoubted advantage of the tyrant is that with a weak bite, many baits attract perch much better than one. The number of baits of 8-10 pieces is optimal, 3-4 baits work much weaker, and a larger number makes the tackle unnecessarily bulky. The equipment begins to get tangled and the game deteriorates.
With a tyrant behind a perch
Undoubtedly, the main advantage of the tyrant is the ability, thanks to a large number of baits, to interest even an inactive perch. The most effective number of baits on one tyrant should be no more than 10 pieces. Exceeding this amount makes the equipment bulky and difficult to control - the baits begin to get confused with each other, which, naturally, negatively affects their game!
Jigs are tied to the main line, but they also use short leashes, 4–5 cm long, the distance between which should be approximately 15 cm. With the correct selection of the optimal weight of the sinker, with such equipment you can fish all promising places, throw the tyrant into any favorite pit, and also work with it on any current! A weight of up to 5 grams is required for fishing at a depth of up to 4 meters.
Anti-twist tube
Such plastic tubes are used for mounting sliding or blind feeder equipment; they prevent the leash from getting tangled.
The anti-twist is equipped with a carabiner for attaching the feeder and moves along the fishing line within the limits.
Equipment with an anti-twist “forgives” mistakes for beginners and is easy to tie, which is how they begin to get acquainted with feeder fishing.
Ledcore is a cord made of braided material of a camouflage or dark shade, with a metal core inside. Some types of feeder equipment are mounted on such a cord, such as the method, flat method, or installation with a spring.
Lures
In general, tyrant fishing involves using medium bird feathers as bait. It is optimal to use this bait in bright colors: jay, guinea fowl, duck, rooster feathers. In combination with them, floss or bright wool threads are used. To properly equip hooks requires skill, which not every angler has.
After selecting the composition, it is necessary to remove the rough parts of the feathers so that the remaining part exceeds the length of the shank on the hook by about 15-20 mm. The feathers are secured with woolen threads or very thin fishing line with fishing knots, for example, with a “clinch”. To prevent the structure from stretching, waterproof glue is used.
DIY winter flies for perch, fishing techniques and equipment
Oddly enough, winter flies for perch are not yet very actively used in ice fishing for striped fish. Practical experience proves that the use of these artificial baits increases catches. When the average amateur fisherman hears the word “fly,” he associates it with something complex from the field of fly fishing. Let's look at how to effectively and easily use perch flies for winter fishing. The banal suspension of an additional hook with red hairs next to a heavy bait (jigs or spinners) as a provocateur increases the catchability of the equipment. For winter perch, you don’t need to look for special, expensive fly fishing flies. Decoys can be easily and quickly made on your knees from scrap materials.

Proper fishing with a tyrant from a boat
We’ll describe a little how to use tyrant on perch from a boat. For such fishing, it is convenient to use the services of an assistant to control the floating craft. Having arrived at the fishing spot, you need to prepare your gear. After preparation, holding the reel or rod with one hand, we begin the unwinding process with the other, smoothly lowering it into the water column.
As soon as the load reaches the bottom surface, the main line is pulled up, remaining in tension throughout the fishing. If you are fishing with several gears, we unwind them one by one. At the first bite, a hook is performed, and fishing continues without removing all the gear from the water. Tyrant is used in a similar way for herring in sea water.
To prevent fish from leaving, the rod is put aside, the fishing line is reeled in by hand, and the caught fish is removed from the hook. As you can see for yourself, the tyrant is a very simple tackle to make and use, which even an inexperienced angler can make and fish. If you select the right bait, fishing with a tyrant can be very effective.
Fishing for horse mackerel
Horse mackerel is a predatory schooling fish, very beautiful and very tasty. It’s extremely exciting to catch it off the coast of Sochi from groins and piers, either vertically or with a float rod (personally, I prefer the first method). Starting from April-May, horse mackerel comes to the shore and is sometimes caught mixed with red mullet. But the peak of its activity in the summer is in July-August, when you can catch up to 8 kg from a boom per night.
Sometimes horse mackerel grabs the bait so aggressively that
Catching horse mackerel in a plumb line from the hand. I immediately fell in love with this method of fishing, unconditionally and irrevocably. It is good because it is almost impossible to get the fishing line mixed up with a neighbor, and, as you know, during a good bite, the groin is full of people with various tackles and a bunch of fishing rods. In addition, our Black Sea is very rarely in a state of complete peace. Consequently, looking at the float dangling on the waves, it’s easy to miss a good half of the good bites. Horse mackerel grabs the bait with lightning speed, and it is important to hook it at this moment. Of course, it often happens that the fish is caught on its own, and all that remains is to simply pull it out. But, nevertheless, it is much more pleasant to feel a bite in your hand, feeling how the fish either tastes the bait, then grabs it in such a way that your heart skips a beat from surprise. If necessary, the bait can be raised at mid-water or even to the surface. Sometimes, usually in the middle of the night, the biting suddenly stops. In this case, a maneuver of slowly raising the bait to the surface and equally carefully lowering it to the bottom can help. It happens that the red mullet is tempted to such a reception. The gear is as follows: a thin, light, comfortable fishing rod (3-5 m) with a thin whip, equipped with a 0.20 mm fishing line, a sliding weight of 3-5 g and a leash with a 0.18 mm fishing line and a silver shiny hook with a long fore-end No. 5-6 according to the domestic standard classifications. All!
Fishing with a bet (tyrant) from a boat
This method is for those who are not afraid of water spaces and seasickness. Fishing from a boat is carried out from October to January 10 (then going to sea along the coast of Sochi for this purpose is prohibited). On such fishing, the main thing is not to grab a scorpion or scorpion fish with your bare hands, not to confuse the bet (which is very unpleasant and offensive at the height of the bite) and not to confuse the bets with your neighbor, or, even worse, with your neighbors. To go fishing from a boat, you must: 1) dress warmly, because... when moving from place to place, the wind whistles in your ears; 2) take a bucket to collect fish; 3) stock up on water and sandwiches, because the boat goes out to sea at 9.00 in the morning and returns to shore at 16.00; besides, on the ship, as a rule, there are no amenities (in terms of a toilet and fresh water), accordingly, draw your own conclusions... The tackle is as follows: a spinning rod with a hard whip and an inertia-free (or inertial Rostov) reel and a main fishing line of 0.40 mm is equipped with a stake on a large swivel. The bet is knitted from 0.18 mm fishing line. Usually it consists of 8-10 silver shiny hooks with a long shank No. 6 (possibly with a small Lurex feather) and a 120 g weight at the end. Before fishing, you need to stock up on stakes and weights in case of a break. Usually, the spinning rod begins to unfold when the boat moves away from the shore, and everyone has taken their original positions along its sides. Baits for horse mackerel
Horse mackerel is a predatory fish. Sometimes it seems that she grabs everything that comes her way, without dismantling the bait. In fact, this is how it usually happens: this fish will equally successfully attack pieces of herring, a gutted mussel, a crustacean (Black Sea shrimp), and even a worm. But, based on personal experience, I would like to note that the one that holds the hook most firmly is a purchased boiled shrimp (from a bag, but better by weight), besides, when fishing at night, horse mackerel sees this bait well in the dark, and it is much easier to bait it easier than, for example, a mussel. More about gear: Where and how to fish? The best time for fishing for mackerel is August-September; you can catch it well in May and June, but spring fishing does not give a complete picture of the real bite of mackerel. In the fall, when you find a feeding flock, in just 20–30 minutes you can catch a ten-liter bucket. It is more effective to search for a school in a group of several boats. During field trips, we use the “penguin fishermen” method: where there are crowded boats, there is most likely a school of fish feeding there, and the fishermen are “grazing” them. The same thing happens when chasing a moving school of fish. A little information for visiting tourists about where you can catch this fish within the city. In the interval, from the 10th station to the “Golden Coast” on the 16th, there are several boat rental points that you can rent for fishing for 25 - 40 rubles per hour. Another catching place is the coast of the city of Ilyichevsk, which can be reached from Odessa by minibuses from the Tairov area in literally 20 minutes. You can also get there by your own transport if you leave Tairov and follow the signs for Ilyichevsk. But locals fish there on their boats, and there are no rental shops. You can also take a minibus to the coast of the villages of Sanzheika and Gribovka. And fish along the entire coast, right up to the village. Zatoka. The Odessa-Belgorod Dnestrovsky train follows to Zatoka; you need to get off at Solnechnaya, Studencheskaya, Druzhba or Limanskaya stations. For vacationers on the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus, I can advise you to contact the local fishermen, who gather on the piers in the early morning or evening. Technically, fishing there, compared to fishing on the Crimean coast, is fundamentally no different. Fishing technique Catching mackerel from a boat to a feeder
