Fishing in Yeisk

Fishing on the Yeisk Estuary

The waters of the Yeisk Estuary contain less sea salt due to desalination by the Yeya River.

  • Relatively shallow depths quickly warm up with the first rays of the spring sun.
  • No strong storms.
  • Abundance of natural food resources in the form of plankton and aquatic fauna.

In the waters of the estuary, industrial fishing is carried out by fishing state farms located in the settlements of Shirochanka and Aleksandrovka on the southern coast, as well as Glafirovka and Nikolaevka on the northern coast of the bay. The total industrial catch is up to 32 thousand tons per year. And of course, amateur fishermen make their contribution to the renewal of the natural resource, for whom the estuary has become not only a favorite place for quiet hunting, but also often a place for family vacations.

The water area of the estuary is federal property, and environmental authorities strictly monitor compliance with the norms and laws regulating the use of water resources. So, for example, amateur fishing is permitted using only bottom, float rods and spinning rods, and from February 1 to May 1 annually, fishing is completely prohibited with all types of fishing equipment. Violation of prohibitions can lead to unpleasant consequences for the violator, in the form of large financial sanctions.

What kind of fish can you catch?

Thanks to the habitat of about twenty-five species of fish, the fame of Yeisk Bay spreads far beyond just local amateur fishermen. In the fertile waters of the estuary, both marine representatives of aquatic fauna and almost all freshwater species, the most popular among fishermen, coexist at the same time. So, for example, along with pike perch, sabrefish, pelengas, herring, sea goby and, of course, the famous Azov ram, the trophy of a successful fisherman will certainly be replenished with the desired ones: bream, crucian carp, carp, perch, pike. It is extremely rare, but still there are sturgeon representatives - beluga, sturgeon, stellate sturgeon.

How and when to catch?

Despite the abundance of freshwater fish species, we should not forget that, although the estuary is quite desalinated, fishing from the shore, as in a full-fledged freshwater body, will not bring the desired result. In the bay you should adhere to the rules of sea fishing, i.e. from a boat, at a considerable distance from the shore.

The most favorable fishing period is considered to be autumn and winter. After a hot summer, the waters of the estuary cool down somewhat, which stimulates more active movement of its inhabitants in search of food before the winter stagnation. In winter, the estuary is replete with Azov rams that enter it to spawn. Fishing, as described above, is carried out using bottom gear, spinning and float rods.

What to catch?

Regarding groundbaits and lures, their range is, in principle, no different from that usually used in freshwater bodies of water. These are cakes, all kinds of vegetable (semolina, cereals, etc.) and animal (worms, maggots) attachments.

Where to fish?

The most favorite places for fishing on the estuary are the settlements located on its coast. A fisherman who has come from far away, staying in accommodation rented from hospitable local residents, will also be able to rent a boat, while receiving comprehensive advice on the most catchable places in the estuary.

Fishing places

For fishing to be successful, you need to scout out where you can catch a big catch. Local residents know that fishing spots are located both in the city itself and in its environs. Not all of them are ready to share information.

Therefore, it is better to find out about good places before going fishing. Among the most popular are the following:

  • The end of the Yeisk Spit, which separates the estuary of the same name and the Taganrog Bay. It extends far into the sea and is considered the most favorable place in the city for fishing. Just one clarification - during the swimming season there are many people who like to swim on the spit. Therefore, it is better to arrive early.
  • There is a fishing spot on the border of Kamenka beach and the port. It is better to come here in the morning, when schools of fish gather near the stones and there are no swimmers.
  • Oxbow lakes and tributaries of rivers flowing into the sea abound in fish. Commercial fishing is common here in many places. 4. There are many lakes in the region. Most of them are suitable for fishing. You can fish from the shore or boat.

Fishing in Yeysk is practiced all year round. In summer, they throw gear directly from boats and the shore. In winter, amateurs go out on the ice. On the territory of the Yeisk region there are several bases that specialize in receiving fishermen. Organized fishing is well developed here. Anyone can rent a boat, gear and other equipment. In addition, on the territory of the bases you can rent a house or even a bathhouse.

Winter fishing in 2021

The hot summer, as expected according to the laws of nature, is replaced by a short and relatively warm winter on the Yeisk Estuary. The air temperature rarely drops below -5 degrees Celsius, which still allows the water area to be covered with a layer of ice. The thickness of the ice cover is most often sufficient for winter fishing. Many ice fishing enthusiasts look forward to the moment when it will be safe to set foot on the bay ice.

Winter is the most favorable period for “hunting” for rams. Adult individuals of this species in the Yeisk Estuary reach a length of up to 32 cm. But one should not forget that specimens that have not reached 16 centimeters in length must be immediately released; this is the law and it is better not to break it.

As in open water, in winter you are also unlikely to have luck near the coastline. Just like on a boat, you should be prepared to march, but on foot, for a distance of about 2-2.5 km. from the shore. Therefore, you should think carefully about the set of equipment you carry, so that unnecessary things do not tire you out during the transition. Among the mandatory ones, you can highlight a compass, a tent and waterproof warm shoes with sufficiently high tops.

Coastal areas have always been distinguished by a unique microclimate with rapidly changing weather conditions. The water area of the estuary is no exception and precipitation in the form of dense fog in winter is not uncommon here. In this case, the compass will help you not to stray from the correct course, and a broken tent will protect you from the rain that suddenly hits you. As for waterproof shoes. The bay never lacks winter fishing enthusiasts. The large concentration of fishermen puts considerable pressure on the ice, which is why estuary water is always present on its surface. And in some cases, you even have to cross unfrozen areas from the shore to the freeze-up. And finally, it’s probably worth giving a couple of tips on the ram fishing technique. It should be understood that the ram is a schooling fish. Schools of rams “walk” in circles in search of food in the water column. Therefore, if there is not a single bite within 10-15 minutes, you should try your luck in another place, without wasting time uselessly sitting in one place. It is not necessary to feed the fish. Due to the winter shortage of food supply, the ram is already quite hungry and with great pleasure absorbs any treats on a fishing hook or jig. Any vegetable bait from the fisherman’s summer assortment is used as bait.

Well, for the rest, if you are sufficiently sociable and armed with “means of public diplomacy”, any local fisherman will educate you in all the intricacies of the process. But with only one important caveat: the exchange of experience should take place strictly on the shore, on the eve of going out on the ice! And there is only hot tea. Well, for the rest, as they say, neither tail nor scales!

Catching Azov pelengas

In order to catch the pelengas, you need to find its favorite bait, which is the sea worm - nereis. Finding it is not difficult; to do this, you need to collect soil from the bottom of the estuary at a depth of about one meter and select it.

In order for catching pelengas to be successful, the fisherman needs to make and use special gear.

A weight weighing 20-35 grams is attached to a piece of fishing line; depending on the current, more is possible; then a pair of leashes with hooks with a long shank are attached. A foam float is attached to the forend; fishermen usually advise painting it orange. This float is the whole secret of the gear for catching bearings.

Pelengas is a very strong, cautious and cunning fish, so the angler gets great pleasure from catching it and fighting it.

Fishing for pelengas went well and the fishermen, having caught several specimens of this fish, decided to move to another place to catch Azov crucian carp or, as the locals call it, buffalo.

Anglers' reports

  1. Yesterday we were on the estuary. We came from the direction of Yeisk, or to be precise, from the village. Alexandrovka. There are 30 people in total on the ice. The weather is gorgeous -4 and a slight breeze. No one saw any fish, including us, and not even a single bite. Everyone stood and smoked. ice 10 cm, good. But the ram doesn’t take it yet
  2. At 15:00 the bite started exactly in 30-40 minutes. I caught 10 rams and all the way until it got dark, only a dilibala (probably a small thing) was caught and pecked on a fishing rod with thin tackle and a jig; there wasn’t even a bite on a fishing rod with a thick line. I breathed some air, found 8.5 km, and got a boost of energy.
  3. Today 6 people were camping on the estuary, we entered from the locks, we entered 4.6 km in a day, one bite for me and a friend, and all three of ours were perverted with matyl (did not give results). Well, there are very few fishermen, but there are more and more marriages, at the exit there are two They dragged two bags with difficulty to the car that arrived and went back to the fishery. So the second time I flew over again, but I was inhaled, I couldn’t catch any fish, but I still went

The best beaches of Yeysk

The resort town of Yeysk is located on the shore of the shallow Azov Sea, which quickly warms up and maintains a comfortable water temperature much longer than the waters of the Black Sea. Most beaches are clean, well-maintained and free. That is why the beaches of Yeysk are popular among tourists, especially at the peak of the season.

Recreation areas are divided into the beaches of the Taganrog Bay and the Yeisk Estuary, since Yeisk is located on a peninsula. These resort areas are separated by the famous Yeisk Spit.

Sunbeds on Central Beach

The Central City Beach and Kamenka Beach are deservedly ranked among the best beaches of Taganrog Bay. They are landscaped from A to Z: all the beach infrastructure, safety and entertainment for both children and adults. A comfortable beach with shallow entry into the water, which is chosen by families with children, is Melaki Beach.

If you are looking for privacy and calm, uncrowded beaches, take a closer look at the estuary. Less comfortable, but more “wild” resort areas are located here. For example, Youth Beach, which is also suitable for sports. Or a children's resort for families with children. In general, almost all beach areas of Yeisk are suitable for families with children: the maximum sea depth along the entire length of the coast is no more than 2.5 meters.
