The best graffiti in Moscow according to famous graffiti artists

The question of where to draw for beginners or experienced artists is closely related to the issue of legalizing graffiti art as such.

The first legal drawings in Moscow began to appear in the early 2000s. Then many turned to writers with orders to paint garages, service buildings, club premises and other objects. But there was practically no talk about professionalism.

One of the first legal works, the date and authorship of which are precisely known, is a drawing in Beskudnikovo, made in 2004 by Eliseev’s workshop.

A new milestone in the history of metropolitan street art was a large-scale campaign to paint twelve five-story buildings in 2007. Thus, the real estate company MIAN celebrated its anniversary on a grand scale by announcing a competition together with the administration of the North-Eastern District. The action was remembered as “Painting on Izumrudnaya”.

The next important event dates back to 2009, when government authorities, with the support of MOEK and MOESK, held the “Dream Energy” festival, during which hundreds of office buildings were painted. The only thing that united the works was the theme. “City of the Future” in 2009 and “Living Planet” in 2010. The jury selected the best works throughout the year, after which the grand finale took place.

In 2012, the MOST street art festival was held, during which about 20 objects were painted. At the same time, the sensational “Patchwork Quilt” was created - a coloring of the bridge on Verkhnyaya Syromyatnicheskaya Street. Gradually, intermediaries began to appear between city authorities and writers. Many organizational issues have been improved, and artists who want to paint legally can breathe easier.

The first officially legalized site for graffiti is SAKHArt, the building of a former sugar factory on Krasnaya Presnya. The area of the site is more than 1.5 thousand square meters. Exhibitions, lectures and other events dedicated to street art and contemporary art in general are held here.

More and more festivals and competitions are appearing, in which writers write on the territory represented, such as the Flacon design factory or Winzavod.

Writers who prefer illegal bombing are also here to stay. They have many cozy courtyards and streets at their disposal.

Popular places for drawing

Along the railway tracks between the Malenkovskaya and Yauza stations there is a typical concrete wall, along which you can walk to the bridge over the Yauza. Under the bridge and in the surrounding area there were always many separate pieces and even complex joint works.

The same picture is over the railway tracks at the junction of Butyrskaya Street and Sushchevsky Val. The painted walls can be seen from a bridge or from a hill, as well as directly along the road from transport. Such points are always a challenge for bombers who do not look for easy ways.

Yards on Pushkinskaya is an ancient place for street art lovers. Starting from Vorotnikovsky Lane, in almost any arch and gateway you can find pieces and sketches.

The long wall on Miusskaya is a place where for a long time writers could paint without conflict and legally. Famous artists from other countries came here, but new works always pleased the eye.

Another old place, the hour of glory of which has already passed, is the wall on Fadeev, near the Museum of Musical Culture named after. Glinka. It so happened that in the second half of the 2000s, many famous writers lived and worked nearby, so the level of drawings remained appropriate for a long time.

Maly Kozikhinsky Lane hides an amazing basketball court, not inferior to the Bronx. The graffiti goes all 15 meters up the wall. Getting there is not easy, but the result is worth it.

Hall of Fame

Hall of Fame refers to the walls on which graffiti has been painted for years. Naturally, there is more than one such wall in Moscow.

  • VDNKh, Second Ostankino street. This is one of the oldest Hall of Fame in Moscow. Once upon a time, there was even a “21 Shop” store nearby, where you could buy paint and other necessary little things. If you get into the territory of a fenced two-story house with many arches and empty windows, you can find a lot of different pieces that quickly replace each other.
  • Arbat, Povarskaya street. They painted here back in the early 2000s. Most often, the then popular “Absurd Mafia” team worked here. Over the years, the wall near the school has been covered with a huge layer of paint. At various times, almost everyone painted here, including famous visiting writers from other cities and countries. Due to the number of enthusiasts, the drawings here never linger.
  • Kutuzovskaya, Kyiv street. The first writers of the old school, including members of the teams “Why”, CGS, BTK and others, painted on the wall on the stretch between Studencheskaya and Kutuzovskaya.
  • Kamergersky Lane. The place has been known since about 2003. At different times, “Why” and “Krovostok” were painted here. Now the wall is painted over and covered by the authorities.
  • Chistye Prudy. Here are two points at once. The first is in the courtyards on Myasnitskaya Street, the second is on Ogorodnaya Sloboda. An excellent place for serious work, where some particularly impressive designs seem to have long since become part of the architecture.

There are other interesting and noteworthy places around Moscow. Among them are a closed courtyard in Palashevskoye, an abandoned construction site on Kaluzhskaya, a wall in Krylatskoye, a site in Stoleshnikovovo and others.

It is not difficult to assume that the graffiti depicts the great Russian and Soviet ballerina Maya Plisetskaya. Every emotion on the face is conveyed as accurately as possible, and a slight wave of the hand is reminiscent of a swan’s wing.

The color rendering of the graffiti is chosen in a very unusual manner - multi-colored waves extend from the figure of the ballerina, crouched in an elegant pose, referring us to the versatility of art.

The image of Maya Plisetskaya in this graffiti embodied the grace of the ballerina, her beauty and creative genius. Here everyone will be able to see the perfect combination of graceful ballet movements and amazing energy that Plisetskaya embodied throughout her professional life.

In 8 days, the appearance of the tunnel changed beyond recognition. The bright multi-colored ornament created a truly bizarre world, which is especially visible at night when the lights come on in the tunnel.

The project was highly appreciated, and its implementation was approved by the city administration. The painting of the tunnel walls was supported by the Winzavod Center for Contemporary Art and the Basmanny District Administration.
