Review of visiting the exhibition of Arkhip Kuindzhi at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow

Arkhip Kuindzhi

October 6, 2021 – February 17, 2019

Arkhip Ivanovich Kuindzhi (1842–1910) is one of the most prominent Russian artists of the 19th century. He made a breakthrough in the artistic quest of his generation of painters, creating a special type of romantic landscape, based on a realistic perception of the world, but transformed by the creative individuality of the artist.

Kuindzhi's art is closely connected with the traditions of the Wanderers. In his work, he fused the experience of the previous development of landscape painting and, with his characteristic originality, transformed Russian and European romanticism, the achievements of the French Barbizons, the discoveries of the Impressionists and decorative theatricalization in easel paintings, which was completely new for that era.

At the Tretyakov Gallery, an exhibition of the outstanding landscape painter was last organized in 1992. It presented part of the master’s artistic heritage, mainly completed works. In today's exhibition, along with famous paintings, you can see numerous studies and sketches. It was during the process of their creation that the painter experimented a lot, being in constant creative search. The first acquaintance with the preparatory work occurred at two posthumous exhibitions organized by the Kuindzhi Society in 1913 in St. Petersburg and in 1914 in Moscow. The second meeting took place in 2007 at an exhibition organized by the State Russian Museum based on the rich material received in 1930 from the Kuindzhi Society.

The current project will present a significantly expanded exhibition of more than 180 selected works. The exhibition includes, in addition to canvases and works from the collections of the Tretyakov Gallery and the Russian Museum, works from 19 major regional collections, as well as museums in neighboring countries - Azerbaijan, Belarus, and from one private collection.

The exhibition allows us to discover Kuindzhi’s personality in a new way. The artist consciously used the latest discoveries of physics and chemistry in his work. Kuindzhi’s innovation is connected not only with the formal aspects of painting, but also with that understanding of the unity of the world and man, which was especially close to the next generation of masters of the early twentieth century. Kuindzhi’s boldness in handling colors and paint, which seemed daring to his contemporaries and often remained inexplicable, is continued in the works of his students, including N. Roerich, A. Rylov, K. Bogaevsky, F. Ruschits, N. Krymov. Kuindzhi opened up rich prospects for the art of the future - symbolism, expressionism, primitivism, fauvism.

Works of Dante Alighieri and contemporary art

Exhibition In Dante Veritas

Salvador Dali "The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri"

And again we have Dante Alighieri and his “Divine Comedy”. Why is Dante in the top again? This is because here it is viewed from a different angle. The organizers offer to see the worlds of Hell, Purgatory and Heaven through the eyes of the surrealist Salvador Dali.

The exhibition in art (https://dalidante.rf) presents woodcuts created by the artist for the poem. This is the oldest form of printed graphics and is no longer in use. This makes the exhibits interesting from an art history point of view.

The exhibition reveals not only the world of Dante, but also the work of Dali. We know him for his long-legged elephants and liquid watches. But it’s always useful to expand boundaries, which is what the exhibition does.

Exhibition “East. Another beauty"

Russia has always been torn apart by contradictions. On the one hand, there is the progressive and advanced West, on the other, the conservative and traditional East. At different periods we turned to one or another type of culture, and we are close to each of them in our own way. Here we will talk about the culture of the East.

The purpose of the exhibition at the Museum of Oriental Art is to reveal the role of women in Asian culture and to present female beauty in general. How fickle and fragile this concept of “beauty” is. This is how women from Persia (now Iran) became invisible by wearing a hijab. But in the Qajar era, they demonstrated a thirst for life and undisguised eroticism in portraits.

Household items, clothing, jewelry, paintings - the exhibits will open the door to the way of life of the eastern representatives of the fair sex.

Exhibition In Dante Veritas

The hell that Dante described comes off the pages of the book and transforms into tangible iron monsters - this is how you can describe the exhibition of Vasily Klyukin at Afimall City (https://indante.ru).

If you have not read “The Divine Comedy” by Dante Alighieri, then we advise you to read the description of the 9 circles of Hell and a summary of the poem. This will help you feel the atmosphere of the exhibition; the works will “come to life” for you. Perhaps the exhibition will awaken your interest in further acquaintance with the work of the figure of the Late Middle Ages.

Features of the exhibition: the exhibition is non-standard and may not appeal to lovers of classical art. Try to look at these works from the point of view of the idea. Then “The Divine Comedy” will open up to you from a new side.

Exhibition “Isaac Levitan and auteur cinema”

If you ask someone the question: “Who was the famous Russian landscape painter?” - then, most likely, they will tell you the name of Isaac Levitan.

Many have known the artist since childhood, when in Russian language lessons they were given the task of describing Levitan’s painting. The program has not changed much, so children are still engaged in describing the works of a landscape painter.

The Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center offers a look at famous paintings in harmony with Russian cinema. The exhibition included such directors as Sergei Eisenstein, Andrei Tarkovsky, Andrei Konchalovsky, Roman Balayan, Andrei Zvyagintsev and others.

Try to draw parallels between the cinema and the artist’s works if you are not thinking of buying a tour. The exhibition will be remembered for creating connections between different types of art.

Features of the exhibition: visitors complain about the cacophony of sounds in the exhibition space. Movies are on at the same time, which causes discomfort. We advise you to take earplugs or headphones with you if you get tired of the noise. Concentrate on the movie you are approaching. This will help you abstract from other sounds.

The note is subjective. It may not affect you.
