Baikal fishing dates back to ancient times. During many archaeological excavations, fishing gear was found: nets, harpoons, hooks, stone sinkers. At the sites of Baikal residents, archaeologists have discovered sculptures of various fish. Today, a lot of materials about fishing on Lake Baikal have already been collected, but scientists do not stop making new discoveries on their expeditions. Since in those days there were a huge number of fish in the waters of Lake Baikal, they were caught using primitive tools. Modern fishing conditions have led to the emergence of new gear and fishing techniques.

  • 4 The process of fishing on Lake Baikal
  • What kind of fish can you catch?

    Fishing is mainly done in the southern part of the lake; the northern part has an equally beautiful landscape, but getting there is very problematic and can only be done by renting a boat or yacht. Renting is very expensive; not every angler can afford such a pleasure.

    You can fish almost all year round.

    Ice fishing continues from December to May inclusive. Summer fishing begins in July and lasts until mid-August. The lake has the richest ichthyofauna; more than 40 species of various fish are found here.

    The most popular is the Baikal omul; in addition, here you can catch:

    1. Grayling.
    2. Pike.
    3. Perch.
    4. Sorogu.
    5. Taimen.
    6. Amur catfish.
    7. Burbot.
    8. Yazya.

    The most successful ways to catch fish are:

    • on the headlight - at night this is how omul is caught;
    • on the whip - in calm, windless weather;
    • boat - this is how small grayling are caught;
    • spinning using a spinner.

    Ice fishing on Lake Baikal. Village of Oblique Steppe

    Let's move on. We pass the village of Kosaya Steppe, the village of Petrovo, here we need to buy 5 liters of bormysh. Bormysh is an amphipod crustacean that is needed for baiting and catching fish (it was written about in the article April fishing on Baikal, there is also a photo of it), but what is it? Again, a surprise, in a couple of decades, this was the first time this happened - there is not a single seller of bormysh. Anatoly and I have a slight panic: “What kind of fishing can there be without a drill?” But they assured us over the phone that there would be no problems with the drill.

    The best places for fishing on Lake Baikal

    Despite the fact that the lake is home to a huge variety of fish, you still need to know the places for successful fishing. An amateur fisherman can enjoy fishing in shallow waters in the coastal zone, near tourist centers.

    On the coast of Baikal there are places with shallow water - sora, they are muddy and grassy, but there are a lot of fish in them.

    Here you can catch ordinary fish, for example, perch, pike, bream, but valuable species are not found.

    But professionals are not very happy with such fishing. Getting to the best fishing spots is challenging and can take a whole day. The solution would be a fishing tour lasting up to a week, chartering a yacht or boat. It is in this way that you can fully experience what fishing on Lake Baikal is like.

    The best places for fishing are:

    1. Ambassadorial rubbish.

    2. Arangutai.
    3. It is better to fish here in the Selenga River from April to August, as the peak of the bite is observed during this period. You can catch: ide, pike, perch, and during the spawning period, omul.
    4. Proval Bay – mostly grayling and perch are caught.
    5. Chivyrkuisky Bay is the best place for winter fishing; the ice thickness in winter reaches up to 15 meters. The bay is shallow, about 6 meters deep, so it freezes before all other places. This quiet and remote place will be more suitable for those fishermen who like to retire and enjoy the beauty of nature and real fishing. Here you can catch a lot of trophy fish - pike, perch, lenok, grayling.
    6. Maloe More is located near the city of Irkutsk, so getting here is easy. It is separated from Baikal by an island; there are many quiet places for fishing.

    Fishing on Baikal

    There are about 56 species of fish in Lake Baikal. The most valuable are:

    • Baikal sturgeon (fishing is prohibited).
    • Grayling.
    • Omul.
    • Lenok (fishing is also prohibited).
    • Whitefish.
    • Golomyanka.
    • Taimen (catching is prohibited).

    Fish such as pike, roach, perch, and sometimes grayling are classified by local residents as weed. To catch fish such as perch, pike, dace, sorog, lenok, grayling, whitefish and omul, you should use the period from December to April. At this point, all the fish rise from the depths.

    For fishing enthusiasts, the southern and eastern coasts of Baikal, which are distinguished by the presence of shallow, well-warmed areas, are considered the most catchy. These include the bays of the Small Sea, the bays of Chivyrkui, Mukhor, Proval and others. Lately, these places have been frequently visited by poachers, and there is no end to them, and the fisheries authorities are unable to deal with them. Because of poachers, valuable fish species, as well as those listed in the Red Book, suffer greatly.

    The northern coasts of Lake Baikal are characterized as inaccessible, therefore, they can only be reached by water, using watercraft. Fishing from a boat on Lake Baikal is practically not practiced, since unpredictable gusts of wind are possible here that can capsize the craft. This is especially true closer to autumn, when the weather is not constant.

    Those who decide to fish on Lake Baikal should know that there are a number of restrictions related to the number of hooks used and other restrictions related to underwater hunting and fishing with nets. In other words, fishing using poaching gear is prohibited here.

    Many species of fish inhabiting Lake Baikal are listed in the Red Book, which limits their fishing. Some valuable species of fish are prohibited from being caught at all.

    Fishing on Lake Baikal in spring

    From March to April, the arrival of spring is felt on Lake Baikal, which is characterized by an increase in temperature. As a rule, after a long and long winter, fish begin to come to life and actively feed. Fishing in spring on Lake Baikal is characterized by the following indicators:

    • March-April is the period of spring ice fishing.
    • The average daily temperature is rising.
    • The activity of fish such as grayling, omul, whitefish, etc. increases.
    • Before spawning, fish gather in numerous schools, which makes them easier to find.
    • The ice fishing period may end in May.

    In the period from the beginning of May to the end of June, it is prohibited to fish on Lake Baikal due to its spawning. There is a ban on omul fishing from mid-August to mid-September. Therefore, during this period it is better to stay at home and not take risks, since fisheries patrols can be found everywhere.

    Summer fishing on Lake Baikal

    Summer fishing on Lake Baikal is marked by its own characteristics. Firstly, in the summer more species of fish are caught, and secondly, it is possible to use a wide variety of gear, but not poaching gear. But this does not mean that you will not have to make every effort to catch fish. Even though you can catch many types of fish, you have to try hard. In any case, you will have to look for fish sites. And yet, fishing in summer on Lake Baikal is not an easy task. Therefore, fishing during this period is characterized by the following factors:

    • Since there is enough food for fish in summer, you shouldn’t count on active biting.
    • During particularly hot periods, there may be no bite at all.
    • For fishing, the following are mainly used: float rod, spinning rod, bottom rod and fly fishing.
    • The following baits are used: live small fish, worms, maggots, amphipods, bread, dough, as well as artificial baits for catching predatory fish.
    • You can count on an active bite early in the morning and late in the evening or at night, since the fish goes to depth after actively warming up the water.
    • In early June, the bite may pick up as caddis butterflies begin to emerge. After this, the biting may stop completely for a while.
    • The most common bait is considered to be an earthworm, which must be brought with you, since it is not available on the shores of Lake Baikal.

    The omul is successfully caught in the spotlight. Amphipods gather in this light, after which the omul also swims to this place. Several hooks are attached to the tackle, and the fishing depth is constantly changed. It is permissible to leave hooks without attachments or use flies. At the same time, it should be remembered that this method of fishing is prohibited by law in many regions.

    Fishing on Baikal in autumn

    Fishing in autumn is no different from fishing in summer, especially in September and October. During this period, both bursts of biting activity and its complete absence are possible. As a rule, this is due to inconsistent weather conditions.

    Somewhere in mid-October and until November, fish such as perch, sorozhka, pike, etc. come to life.

    A couple of weeks before freeze-up, there is a surge in fish activity and continues until freeze-up. During this period, it is possible to catch omul from a boat using float or vertical fishing rods. But this time is quite dangerous, as it is characterized by the presence of storms and strong winds.

    Fishing on Lake Baikal in winter

    Lake Baikal has the most popular places where fishermen fish in winter. Shallow waters of the east coast and the strait between the island. Olkhon is considered the most productive. Lake Baikal is covered with ice in December, and is freed from it at the end of April, beginning of May.

    Fishing on Lake Baikal in winter has its own characteristics:

    • The most successful fishing period is December.
    • On the first ice you can catch perch, pike, roach, and grayling.
    • The most suitable places during this period are considered to be shallow water and reed thickets.
    • After the ice strengthens, the fish tries to move away from the shore and after that it is difficult to find.
    • Fishing in winter is a constant quest.
    • In January and February, omul and whitefish rise from the depths.
    • For fishing in winter, only artificial baits, such as flies, are used.

    Fishing places on Lake Baikal in winter

    The most effective places are considered to be places where there is not much depth. These include bays, bays, estuaries, straits and river deltas.

    What is fish used to catch on Lake Baikal?

    Amphipod crustacean is considered the best bait, regardless of the time of year.

    NIGHT WINTER FISHING ON BAIKAL IN FROST

    Features of Baikal fishing

    In each period of the year, fishing has its own characteristics that you need to know, as well as advantages and certain disadvantages. Let's look at summer and winter fishing in more detail. It is not easy to catch fish, since almost all of them are deep-sea, rarely stand in one place and swim in schools.

    Summer fishing

    You can fish on Lake Baikal in the summer from June to early October. You only need to fish in the morning or late evening, since the water heats up during the day and the fish do not feed at this time.

    It should be noted that in summer the fish themselves are able to find live food, so artificial baits should not be used during this period.

    For fishing it is better to use:

    • spinning rods;
    • float rod;
    • bottom gear;

    In summer the fish bites well:

    1. Perch.
    2. Amur catfish.
    3. Pike.

    Winter fishing

    During the cold season, the surface of the lake is covered with ice for six months.

    Small bays are the first to freeze, the most popular of them, as noted earlier, is Chivyrkuisky.

    The most successful periods for fishing are bright and sunny days.

    In frosty times you can catch the following fish:

    • white or black grayling;
    • pike;
    • ide;
    • sorog;
    • perch;
    • Baikal omul.

    With the onset of the first frosts, winds begin to blow on the lake from all sides, so this type of fishing is suitable for professional and persistent fishermen who know how to properly equip a place for fishing. But it is in winter that you can catch a lot of trophies, for example, pike can reach 16 kilograms, and perch - three.

    In winter, lovers of active recreation can enjoy unique fishing, combined with jeep or snowmobiling on the icy surface of the lake.

    Fishing bases

    Lake Baikal is very popular among fishermen; people come here to fish not only from all over Russia, but also from all over the world. Championships among professional athletes are held here every year.

    There are not many fishing bases on Lake Baikal; they are located mainly on the coast of bays and islands.

    Below we will consider the most popular bases - Land of Baikal and Buran.

    Land of Baikal

    The fishing base is located in the North-Eastern part of the lake on the shore of Chivyrkuisky Bay. This place is remote from populated areas and will appeal to lovers of a relaxing holiday in solitude with the nature of Lake Baikal. The shore of the bay has many bays suitable for fishing.

    You can catch a lot of trophy fish here, for example, the average weight of pike is 4-10 kilograms, and perch is more than one kilogram.

    The base offers fishermen double rooms with all amenities.

    For camping lovers, two-day trips to the lake with accommodation in luxury tents are organized.

    You can relax at the base both in summer and winter, since the houses are heated in winter. In summer, you can rent a motor boat accompanied by a huntsman who knows the best places for successful fishing.

    Fishermen are offered meals with an abundance of fish dishes on the menu. Those who like to take a steam bath can visit the bathhouse located on the territory of the base.

    The best places for fishermen on Lake Baikal

    There are a huge number of such places on Lake Baikal. Moreover, here you can not only go fishing, but also relax.

    Moreover, you can relax like a savage or use the services of fishing camps or recreation centers.

    There are many beaches on the shore of the lake, where people actually relax. Some of them are located next to the M55 highway, as well as on the south coast. For example:

    • Beaches located behind the village of Utulik, which are visited by “savages”.
    • The beaches of the Chaika tourist center, which are distinguished by the fact that “savages” can relax here in comfort: visit a cafe, shower, disco, etc.
    • Olkhon Island, which is considered the main vacation spot for savages. In addition, the local strait can provide vacationers with fresh fish.

    For those who decide to relax as a “savage,” you should remember that the local population treats visitors poorly, to put it mildly.

    For those who like a comfortable pastime, recreation centers have been built on the shores of Lake Baikal, designed for any category of vacationers. Among the many such establishments, it is worth noting those that are most often visited by vacationers.

    Fishing base "Buran"

    Located in the delta of the Selenga River. Provides services for organizing fishing for all categories of fishermen, whether professionals or amateurs. Here you can stay in comfortable rooms with shower rooms and satellite TV. On the territory of the base there is a pier and a guarded parking lot. Three meals a day are practiced. All conditions have been created for fishing lovers. It is also possible to rent any fishing equipment here.

    Ice fishing on Lake Baikal. A bear's visit to our overnight stay

    Fishing on Baikal in winter is very interesting, but not always predictable, sometimes warm sunny weather can change in a matter of minutes to a strong gusty wind, it can snow, so it happened this time - there was practically no fish. We drilled dozens of holes, but the ice thickness was within a meter. It became quite cold, and only the cry of arriving scoters and seagulls reminded of the coming spring. During the day we traveled dozens of kilometers on the ice in search of fish, but we never found it.

    The day was coming to an end, it was necessary to decide on a place to stay for the night. We decided to spend the night on the shore on a spit of one of the peninsulas (Cape Uyuga). The shore of the spit was a large pebble, and it was not without difficulty that we drove out onto it in our jeep, turning on all the drives and locks. Lonely pine trees grow on the spit, a beautiful rocky landscape. We had a day on the Kurma spit during the Circum-Baikal hike, this was written about in one of the articles on the blog.

    We decided to spend the night near a beautiful pine tree. To organize an overnight stay in the car, it was necessary to unload almost all the contents of the trunk and interior of the car, which we did. The equipment, cans of gasoline and a plastic barrel of food were neatly stacked near the pine tree. After dinner, we went to bed, because it was dark outside and there was nothing else to do.

    Ice fishing on Lake Baikal. Road to Olkhon

    Winter fishing on Baikal 2021 has not yet brought any success, I had to travel a lot on the ice, look for fishing happiness, but it never came. We arrived at the small island of Borga Dagan, but apart from the bird colony and beautiful icy landscapes, there was nothing else here. It would have been a sin not to take photos and videos of this beauty. You can appreciate all the beauty yourself from the presented video and photo:

    We also visited the small island of Sharga-Dagan, as well as the Oltrek island. There were fishermen on the vast icy expanses of Lake Baikal, and their results were no better than ours.

    View of Oltrek Island

    On the island of Borga Dagan

    Ice wonders on the island of Borga Dagan

    You can see how the lava solidified, literally in a circle!

    We concluded that there are no fish here. Taking into account that the ice was thick and quite strong, we decided to drive to the large island of Ogoy, which was located 11 kilometers from the coast. There is a Buddhist stupa on this island. We tried to look for fish, but there were none here either, so we decided to drive to the opposite side of the island. So we ended up two kilometers from the coast of Olkhon Island.

    Ice fishing on Lake Baikal. The path to Sarma and Kurma

    The road to Sarma and Kurma is gravel, of acceptable quality, with fairly steep ascents and descents; the road runs along the western coast of Lake Baikal. We pass Shida, the village of Sarma and the bridge over the river of the same name. The Sarma River flows through the Sarma Gorge, from which one of the most powerful winds of Baikal, Sarma, bursts out.

    View of the Sarma gorge

    The gravel road to Kurma is of excellent quality so far

    Wind gusts in Sarma can sometimes exceed 200 km per hour; such winds capsize ships and pose a huge danger. I had cases when during the Sarma wind it was simply impossible to drive on the ice of Lake Baikal - the car simply turned around.

    We drive further, here is the village of Kurma. Actually, now it is not quite a village, there are no permanent residents in it, cottages have been built here for vacationing tourists. The last power line supports reach here. Electricity is not supplied to Onguren; it has its own solar-wind power plant. The road to Onguren is complex and difficult, in the presented video you can see it yourself and this is far from the most difficult section of the road. The road to the village of Onguryony was also described in my blog article.

    Finally we were on the ice of Lake Baikal - hurray! We drove about six hundred kilometers from Sayansk. On the section of the Baikal passes and difficult roads, a lot of fuel was burned, so on the highway, the consumption was within 11 liters per hundred, then on the Baikal roads the fuel consumption was 30, and sometimes 40 liters per hundred.
