History of the origin of the lake
There is still active debate about the origin of such an unusual lake.
There are three main theories about its origin - two scientific and one legend. According to some scientists, the Holy Lake was formed as a result of a karst failure, which was instantly filled with groundwater. However, during diving dives, research groups found that the shape of the lake is more like a funnel or crater than a karst hole with steep banks.
Other scientists have put forward a completely different assumption. In their opinion, the Holy Lake arose as a result of the fall of a cosmic body. Many scientists have tried to prove the meteorite origin of the lake, but it has not yet been possible to create a complete picture of what happened thousands of years ago.
In 2009, with the participation of employees of the Shilovsky Museum of Local Lore, comprehensive measures were taken to study the Holy Lake - entire expeditions were organized, but the facts obtained during the study were not enough to come to an unambiguous conclusion. Studying the lake is complicated by the fact that, for unknown reasons, at a depth of about 15 m there is a meter-long thermoplastic water, the temperature of which is about 0°C.
Most local residents, however, have a completely different point of view. They believe the legend according to which there was an island in the middle of the lake, and on it stood an ancient church. One day, by the will of God, the island, along with the temple, sank to the bottom, where it remains to this day. In addition, since the church, according to legend, was in the name of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, every year on July 12, on the day of the celebration of the Holy Glorious and All-Glorious Chief Apostles, priests and residents gather from all over the area to take part in the water-blessing prayer service.
In addition, it is worth noting that previously as many as five chapels were erected around the lake, one from each nearby settlement, but in Soviet times, due to persecution of the church, they were destroyed
