Spinner for herring: homemade spinning equipment for catching herring, how to make a spinner with your own hands, the best tackle

When does the fishing period begin?

Don or Black Sea-Azov herring is a fish that is a coveted trophy for fishing lovers on the Volga. After wintering in the Black Sea, the herring begins to rise along the Don or Volga, when you can start catching herring with spoons or homemade baits. This period occurs at the end of April - beginning of May.

The average size of herring, which can be caught in river spaces using a spoon or other equipment, is from 20 to 25 cm.

There are two subspecies:

  • large (herring reaches 50 cm in length);
  • medium (fish size rarely exceeds 25 cm).

In terms of taste, Don herring is in no way inferior to its Norwegian counterpart.

Operating technique

The most exciting and interesting fishing for tyrants will be using a boat or boat, especially in the morning and evening hours. At this time of day, fish gather at a depth of 20-35 m throughout the entire water area, and during the day - in the range from 35 to 55 m and near underwater gorges.

It is better to go sea fishing together. Before casting the gear, you need to study the direction of the current and wind: if it is from the shore, first fish shallow areas, and from the sea, start from the depths.

Having decided on the place of fishing, the vehicle is “anchored”, the lead weight is released and, unhooking the hooks one by one, the stake is immersed. After waiting until it is in the water, the tackle is taken by the rod or handle, and the main line, under the influence of gravity, begins to quickly unwind on its own. To insure against a sharp or unexpected bite, the handle is tied to the side (the rod is held in the hands).

The fishing technique consists of periodically twitching the tackle. The moment of bite is transmitted along the line with weak or strong jerks.

After the first twitch, there is no need to rush to remove the cord from the water; on the contrary, it is necessary to lower it even deeper. In this case, more than one fish will be able to catch on the free hooks.

Raise the tackle slowly and straight to the bottom of the boat. By selecting the main line, you can see all the caught fish in the water. It is removed from the hooks one by one, but the bet itself is not completely removed. Also, do not hold the catch suspended, as it may come loose. Having removed all the fish, the undergrowth is again lowered into the water, after which the required length of the main line will also sink to the bottom.

Do-it-yourself herring spoon

What are herring spoons? For many years, craftsmen soldered them with their own hands, and now catchable spoons can be purchased in almost every fishing store. This is a lightweight metal bait of an oblong shape with a soldered hook number 7, 8 or 9. You can use petals taken from spinners like Mepps Comet or their analogues, but you will have to attach the hook yourself.

To cast such a spinner, you will need an additional streamlined weight that prevents the leash from getting tangled. It is best to take a spindle-shaped sinker with ears on the sides. One is for fixing the main line, the other is for the leash with the spoon. After casting, you just need to swing the rod widely, and the leash will slide along the sinker and straighten out. As for its length, it should not exceed 1.5 meters. You should not use a longer leash, otherwise casting problems may arise.

Some fans of spinning herring fishing use equipment with a wire beam. The task of this element is to move the lead with the spoon away from the main line at the moment of casting. In general, this equipment looks unpretentious. A load is hung on the short arm of the rocker (5-8 cm), a one-and-a-half meter leash with an attached spoon is attached to the long arm (23-25 cm), and the main fishing line is attached to the ring between them.

Sometimes the herring passes at a short distance from the shore. In this case, there is no need to come up with sophisticated equipment and remove the leash; you can fish with ordinary oscillating spoons. Small castmasters weighing up to 10 g have proven themselves best. They have excellent aerodynamics, so they fly accurately and far. It is advisable to connect them to the main line through a swivel.

Herring fishing. Tackle. Lures

We all know firsthand about the taste of herring, because dishes made from it occupy an important place in our diet. This fish is always present on the festive table and is often on everyday life.

The vast majority of people buy it in supermarkets, but some manage to catch herring on a spinning rod on their own, often close to home.

But where did the Black Sea-Azov herring come from in our area?

Herring is a sea fish, unaccustomed to fresh water, but this does not in the least prevent it from spawning in the Volgograd Reservoir, in Astrakhan and in rivers such as the Don, Volga or Dnieper.

Already at the end of April, numerous schools head to the mouths of the listed water arteries to perform the function of procreation.

It is at this time that on the river banks you can see dense ranks of fishermen, attracted here by the active movement of herring.

A little information

In 2000, herring in the rivers did not completely disappear, but their numbers decreased sharply. Every year it became less and less, so the authorized bodies suspended the issuance of fishing licenses.

Many years have passed since that moment, the population began to gradually recover, but the fish still continues to be listed in the Red Book. In other words, neither people nor the state can catch it. But the paradox is that everyone and everyone, who is not too lazy, catches herring.

They catch with a variety of gear, from old-fashioned rubber bands to spinning rods.

It’s interesting that the bottom fish still somehow get along on the shore, but not everything is so smooth for the spinning fishermen. The fact is that catching herring with a spinning rod requires long casting, and standing shoulder to shoulder with competitors you can’t really swing your rod. Even a fairly heavy load – up to 40 g – does not help to throw it to the required distance.

Tackle for herring fishing

For fishing in these difficult conditions, a long blank is more suitable. Anglers with spinning rods over 3 meters long and with an upper test limit of up to 50 g are in a better position, since they have the ability to cast far from behind their heads without fear of hooking someone. You can put all your energy into such a throw.

By the way, it is not at all necessary to catch herring with an expensive tool made from high-modulus graphite. Here you don’t need either the sensitivity or the ringing of the rod, as is the case with pike perch.

The softer the rod, the farther it will launch the lure with a sinker. In addition, this fish does not need to be hooked as powerfully as a fanged robber. If she pecks, she will sit down on her own and won’t go anywhere.

The fisherman can only pull it out without any prelude.

The coil can be inertial or inertial-free, this does not play a special role. When catching herring from the shore, its capacity is much more important. The optimal size would be in the range of 3000-4000, allowing you to gain the required supply of fishing line (0.3-0.35 mm) or cord (0.18 mm).

Do-it-yourself herring spoon

What are herring spoons? For many years, craftsmen soldered them with their own hands, and now catchable spoons can be purchased in almost every fishing store.

Small castmasters weighing up to 10 g have proven themselves best. They have excellent aerodynamics, so they fly accurately and far. It is advisable to connect them to the main line through a swivel.

Features of flock search

Old seasoned spring herring hunters keep one method secret, which they call "slant fishing." Its principle is that after casting, the lure is allowed to sink until half of the fishing line is hidden in the water.

When this happens, you can start rewinding. It should be noted that their fishing line is usually very thick - up to 0.5 mm in diameter. But when fishing on a wave, and even on a thinner, invisible braided line on the water, this trick does not work.

How then to find the right horizon?

It happens that several dozen people stand in a tight line on the shore, everyone has approximately the same bait, the casting range is the same, but only one lucky person carries the fish. He takes them off the hook one by one and smiles slyly.

What is his secret? The answer is simple: he managed to find the horizon in which the school was moving. To get the same pleasure, you should watch him, see what pause he waits after casting, whether he moves the bait quickly or slowly, and so on.

Often, exact repetition of his actions brings results.

Nobody forbids you to search for the necessary horizon yourself. To do this you will have to experiment a little. For example, start the first drive after the load touches the bottom surface, the second – two to three seconds earlier, the third – after waiting an even shorter pause.

That is, with each subsequent cast, the time the bait falls is reduced. When the first bite occurs, it will become clear what to do next.

From all of the above, the conclusion suggests itself that success in catching herring with a spinning rod depends on how far the angler casts the tackle and at what depth the bait is cast.

Determining the catchable horizon does not guarantee exciting fishing for the whole day, because each flock goes its own route. The next school will pass closer to the surface or, conversely, in the lower layers of water. Therefore, you need to be prepared for constant experiments; if the bite stops, you will have to look for fish again. Note to anglers. Practice has shown that herring's appetite is greatly influenced by external factors. In warm, sunny weather, the run lasts up to three weeks; it catches well, which gives fishermen a lot of pleasure. But a sharp cold snap can interfere with this process, during which bites become rare and sluggish, and catches become scarce.

Therefore, if weather forecasters promise lower temperatures, gusty winds and low pressure, it is better to stay at home.

The elastic band for catching herring is ready

Regarding how to fish with such a rubber band for herring. It's simple. To begin with, bring it on a boat or throw a sinker from the shore so that all the leads are under water, it is important that the topmost hook is at a depth of at least 2 meters. This is how they play with a cambric. They grab the line, pull it and release it.

Without pulling the leashes out of the water, in short, they just tug. It goes without saying that when you feel a blow, you pull out the leashes and remove the herring. Instead of a sinker, you can use a brick or a piece of chain, since in most cases it is impossible to pull it out.

How to make tackle

First we wind the fishing line onto the filly. We tie a loop at the end of the fishing line, hang a swivel on the loop, we will need it for attaching the elastic band to the fishing line.

We step back from the loop 20 centimeters and knit a small loop with a reinforcing knot; we will need 5 loops at a distance of 60 centimeters from each other.

Strong line to the elastic band. Everything here is extremely simple, we tie a loop at one end of the elastic band and strengthen it with additional knots. Then we put the elastic band on the swivel, thereby connecting the fishing line with the elastic band.

Firm the rope to the elastic band. We repeat the previous fastenings, only with an elastic band and a rope without using a swivel.

It's the turn of the hooks. We tie the hooks with the fishing line, the length of the leash should be approximately 7 cm, at the end of the fishing line we make a loop and a reinforcing knot.

Then we put the cambrics on the hooks, so that the cambric completely covers the shank of the hook

The final part. We put the wires on the previously prepared loops near the main fishing line. And we hang the load on the rope.

Tricks for finding a joint

The movement of schools is quite difficult to predict; they usually move from shallow coastal waters to the middle of the Volga, after which they return, but they can pass at different depths.

Usually, a large number of fishermen gather in mid-spring; by paying attention to the volume of their catch, you can determine whether a school has passed through or whether there has been a lull.

The depth of location of the prey depends on weather conditions, atmospheric pressure and temperature. The easiest way to look for schools of herring is using an inflatable boat, this is done as follows:

Herring fishing techniques and tactics

Herring fishing is a fairly easy task that even novice fishermen can cope with; you just need to familiarize yourself with the basic tactics and techniques of this process.

How to catch herring on a spinning rod?

To get a good catch, it is recommended to follow the following rules when using spinning gear:

  1. You can practice different styles of wiring, their choice depends on the type of bait used. It is important that wobblers and spinners imitate the behavior of real fish with their play - this is the main key to success in fishing.
  2. Spinning fishing can be done from the side of a boat or from the shore. Beginners are more comfortable with the first option, since in a sitting position it is much easier to hone the skill of making casts. After gaining sufficient experience, you can begin to practice casting from a standing position from the shore.
  3. Fishing from a boat allows you to cast bait into the deepest places on the river, but you must remember that at a depth of more than 40 meters the chances of catching herring are minimal.

Best time to fish for herring

The most active bite is observed during spawning, but during this period there is usually a fishing ban. It is necessary to wait until it is completed and immediately start fishing for herring, since it is in early June that there are good chances of catching well-fed and large individuals, and this fish acquires a pleasant taste precisely thanks to the accumulated fat. By mid-August, the herring begins to actively lose weight, which reduces the likelihood of catching large specimens.

During spring fishing, it is recommended to catch herring during the daytime, when most baits are most active and attack.

› Notes for fisherman › Reviews of reservoirs

At the beginning of spring, many fishermen begin to practice herring fishing on the Volga, since large schools of fish enter the river from the Caspian Sea immediately after the snow melts. It is passing prey that ends up here on its way to spawning grounds. Its fishing on the Volga has the following features:

Features of herring fishing on the Volga

  1. To fish, you will need to obtain an appropriate license; issuance began in 2012. The exception is fishing with a spinning rod or elastic band; for this, obtaining additional permission is not required.
  2. Most anglers are located on the shoreline, but for catching large specimens it is recommended to use inflatable boats.
  3. Two varieties of herring pass through the Volga, which have minor external differences in the shades of the abdominal and dorsal parts.

The ban on herring fishing and how to treat it

There are bans on herring fishing on the Volga; violation of fishing rules may result in penalties from the responsible authorities.

To avoid such consequences, you need to know the following features:

  1. If fishing is carried out not using an elastic band or spinning tackle, but by any other means, then you must obtain a fishing permit. Classic float rods and jigs are considered illegal in these areas.
  2. From the end of May to the beginning of June, herring fishing on the Volga is completely prohibited, including using spinning rods and elastic bands. Such measures are associated with the beginning of the spawning period for this breed.

When does the herring run on the Volga begin?

The herring season on the Volga usually begins in the middle or end of April, but the most favorable period for fishing is considered to be the first days of May. This process may begin earlier or later, as it depends on weather conditions in the current year and the timing of warming.

The bite is not always stable, which is due to the uneven passage of schools along the river: they can go right after each other or with a small interval. The fish moves over a long distance, rising all the way to Tver and entering Oka, Vyatka and Kaluga along the way.

Over 13 years of active fishing, I have found many ways to improve the bite. And here are the most effective:

  1. Bite activator. Attracts fish in cold and warm water with the help of pheromones included in the composition and stimulates its appetite. It’s a pity that Rosprirodnadzor wants to impose a ban on its sale.
  2. More sensitive gear. Read the relevant manuals for a specific type of gear on the pages of my website.
  3. Pheromone -based lures .

You can get the rest of the secrets of successful fishing for free by reading my other materials on the site.

  1. While on the boat, the angler casts a spoon with a sinker.
  2. Immediately after it is immersed in the water, the countdown begins; at the same time, you must not miss the moment when the sinker does not come into contact with the bottom surface.
  3. You need to wait for the first bite, and then start reeling in the fishing line.
  4. The countdown continues until the fish is caught from the river.

This method allows you to determine the depth at which the flock is currently located. You should continue fishing taking into account the information received; casts are made to the longest possible distance.

Herring habitats - choosing a fishing location

Herring enters the Volga from the sea; it stays in the river temporarily. You can catch it here in the following places:

  1. Areas near the central part of the river, which can be approached by boat, are considered the most promising places for fishing. In addition, in such conditions it is always possible to determine the location of a large school and the depth of its passage.
  2. Fishing from the bank of the Volga is also often a very productive activity, but you need to have a spinning rod capable of making long and accurate casts, which is useful for cases when there is no prey in shallow water. The most promising place is considered to be the coast located below the Volzhskaya hydroelectric station.
  3. Akhtuba, which is the left branch of the Volga, will also be a good choice for herring fishing.

What is the best way to catch herring?

When choosing gear, it is best to choose a spinning rod, since you do not need to obtain a license to use it. It is recommended to choose artificial baits that have bright and clearly visible colors, as well as various moving and rotating elements that will not only attract attention, but also create vibrations in the water.

Spider lures are popular because they are a universal option that can be used when fishing from the shoreline or from the side of a vessel.

Lures and equipment

The main requirement for artificial baits is to be equipped with reliable hooks No. 7-9. It is recommended to have an arsenal that will include:

  1. Spinners in red, black, white and grey.
  2. Oscillating spinners in red, black, yellow and gold.
  3. Vibrating tails.
  4. Sinking wobblers.
  5. Wobblers with neutral buoyancy index.

Often, herring bite well on natural baits; dung or earthworms, bloodworms and maggots are usually used.

To get a good catch, you will need to pay attention to the spinning rod equipment with a test rating of up to 30g; it should look like this:

  • Mono line with a cross-section of 0.35 mm; if desired, it can be replaced with a braided cord with a cross-section from 0.15 to 0.18 mm.
  • The weight of the weight attached to the bait is 20-30g. It is necessary to ensure the range and accuracy of the casts.
  • The reel can be used of an inertial or inertialess type; the volume of the spool is much more important - it should be at least 3000.
  • A fluorocarbon or metal leash is a mandatory part of the equipment; the recommended length is 40-50cm.

Herring fishing techniques and tactics

Herring fishing is a fairly easy task that even novice fishermen can cope with; you just need to familiarize yourself with the basic tactics and techniques of this process.

How to catch herring with a spoon?

Initially, you will need to locate the school by throwing the bait in different directions; it is most convenient to do this while on a boat. Prey preferences may change depending on various factors, so it is recommended to have a set of spinners with different colors, sizes and shapes.

It is enough to make 2-3 casts to the selected point and if there are no bites, the bait can be safely changed to another model. It is necessary to continue such experiments until the most effective version of the spinner is selected.

How does fishing for herring on the Don differ from fishing on the Volga?

Fishing for herring on the Don and Volga has no fundamental differences; it enters both rivers about a month before spawning and has similar behavior. The only difference is in the size of the fish itself: the Black Sea herring swims into the Don, which is larger in size and impressive in weight.

In the waters of the Volga you can find Caspian fish, the average weight of which is 1-1.5 kg, although some fishermen manage to catch trophy specimens weighing up to 2 kg.

Tips and tricks

  1. There are no universal baits that will always show good results, since fish preferences can change. For this reason, you need to go fishing with a set of artificial baits and natural baits.
  2. To get the largest catch, it is recommended to fish from a boat, but you need to take into account that the license in this case will cost more.
  3. All hooks should be equipped with colored threads or feathers; they are needed not only for camouflage, but also to attract attention from the prey.
  4. Shore fishing is more productive in the fall than during the spring season.
  5. Hooking the caught herring must be confident, but accurate and without sudden jerks, otherwise a large number of derailments will be observed.

How to make a spinner?

To make a spinner yourself, you need to take a beer can and cut out blanks of this type from it:

As you can see in the picture, there are holes in the middle of the spoon. A hook is threaded through them. Be sure to use a hook with a long shank. This prevents the hook from being soldered into the lure. To fit the lure onto the hook more tightly, a cambric is also put on the fore-end. The lure is fixed to the main line using a winding ring or carabiner.

Another type of spinner is shown in the following figure:

As you can see, this spoon has two petals. 3 holes measuring 1 mm are drilled on the rectangle. They will set the direction of rotation of the spinner. The workpiece must be bent along lines 4. Wire 2 with a fastener 8 connecting the tee to the spinner is inserted into the holes. A small bead 7 is attached to the top of the clasp, which secures the spinner.

At the final stage of making the spoon, ring 6 is made. Three holes give the spoon balance when moving in the water column: the petals do not touch the tee and do not stick. To ensure that the tee does not cling to the fishing line, a piece of nipple tube 0.5 cm long is attached at the junction of the hook and the fastener. First, it is strung on the shank of the hook, and then moved so that it gets to the fastening unit. Such a lure also requires a sinker weighing 20 grams, which is attached to a separate leash.

Herring baits

A herring rig may contain several artificial baits, so it's worth saving money and making your own.

Herring lives in schools and is very active during fattening: each fish tries to eat as quickly as possible, because competitors are not asleep. This natural mechanism of competition for food plays into the hands of anglers, because the fish, indulging in a mad pursuit of food, grab the imitation bait without looking closely.

To increase fishing efficiency, a fishing rod with many baits is used, in accordance with fishing rules. In Russia, you can use gear containing no more than 5 hooks. If the fish has a good appetite, you can often pull out up to 5 large herring at a time. The tackle is made of thick fishing line. Herring is not a large fish, so you can easily pull out a set again and again, using the same tackle for many days. The set with five shiny hooks, decorated with multi-colored baits and side leashes tied to the main fishing line, resembles a Christmas tree, it is even called a “herringbone”.

The design of the “Christmas tree” is quite simple, and you can make it yourself. You need to take a rigid fishing line, for example with a diameter of 0.40 mm, from which the main fishing line will be made, a rigid fishing line (for example, fluorocarbon) with a diameter of 0.20-0.30 mm for making side leads, a sinker of size 8-10, as well as shiny materials , which can be found even at home - in a drawer with sewing supplies.

Read: Fishing with a fly rod: floats and rigs

It should be remembered that it is better to tighten the knot not too tightly - only to a slight resistance of the knot when wet. The knot will tighten on its own while landing the next fish.

Materials for artificial bait:

  • Sinker No. 1-2/0.
  • Fishing thread.
  • Quick-drying, elastic, waterproof adhesive.
  • A piece of fluorescent film.

Artificial bait can be made in a fly tying vice or in the palm of your hand. You will need sharp scissors.

  1. Cut the film into strips 3-8 cm long and 3 cm wide.
  2. Then fold the film in half so that the strip is up to 1.5 cm wide.
  3. Cut the end of the film at an angle.
  4. Then wrap a winding on the hook next to the ring, to which you need to glue the film, and then wrap it with the winding several times.
  5. Cut the end of the film with scissors and again reinforce with glue the place where the film is fixed through the winding.
  6. If you have fluorescent or multi-colored beads, you should place them on a leader tied to or in front of the sinker.
  7. The main line should be 0.30-0.50 mm in diameter and 15-20 cm long, the line for tying baits (side leads) should be 0.20-0.30 mm in diameter. The length of the side leash is 8-15 cm (excluding bait). The side leash is tied with a rigid knot, which can be reinforced with waterproof, quick-drying glue. The side leader with the bait should reach halfway from the assembly of the other side leaders and the end fasteners.

Herring

Installation of a tyrant for herring

Another popular and catchy tackle for catching herring is the tyrant. A fishing rod equipped with a tyrant is used to catch fish from a boat at sea. The fisherman's task is to find a school of herring and give it the bait that it will take.

This fishing rod consists of a spinning rod up to 3 meters long and an inertia-free plastic reel. The spool capacity is 5000-6000. Why should the reel parts be plastic? Because sea water quickly damages metal parts. This has already been tested in practice.

A fishing line with a diameter of 0.4 to 0.8 mm is wound onto the reel. Another piece of fishing line 1.5 meters long is attached to the end of the fishing line through a carabiner. 5 leashes with hooks No. 6-8 are tied to it. The length of the leashes is 3-5 cm. A flat-shaped weight weighing from 50 to 150 grams is tied to the end of the fragment. The stronger the current, the heavier the weight we place.

Fishing rod equipment

The gear consists of a spinning rod up to 3 meters long and a plastic spinning reel. Metal coils should not be used, as they are destroyed by salt water. A fishing line with a diameter of 0.4 to 0.8 mm is wound onto the reel. To the end of the fishing line, a thinner piece of fishing line with a diameter of 0.3 and a length of 1.5 - 2 meters is attached to a swivel using the carabiner method. A load weighing from 50 to 150 grams is attached to this segment. Weight depends on the strength of the current.

Leashes with hooks are attached to the fragment. The length of the leashes is approximately 3-5 cm. They are knitted at a distance of 10-15 cm from each other. The thickness of the leads is 0.25 mm. You can read how to tie leashes to the main line in this article. The number of hooks can be from 5 to 8.

Basic lures

Nickel-plated hooks are used. They retain their shine over many fishing trips. The herring bites much better on shiny hooks. For this reason, tinned hooks are not suitable, as they fade over time and do not shine as well as they should. Red woolen threads are wound on the hooks. You can also use green, yellow and blue. The main thing is that they are very bright. The threads are still knitted in a bunch. It turns out to be a small panicle.

Another bait that herring bite well on is an artificial fly or something similar to it. It's easy to do. A small feather from a turkey or duck is tied to the inside of the hook with a thread. It should be bright and shimmer in the sun in different colors, preferably dark ones. After winding, BF glue is applied to the thread. It will fix the feather well and it will stay in the water for a long time.

Another catchable bait consists of a small tuft of animal hair. This piece should be slightly smaller than the hook. It is tied to the fore-end with a bright thread. The result is a brush-shaped bait that glides well in the water and attracts fish. Catching herring with a tyrant will bring results if the fisherman has sets of such equipment.

On one fishing trip, you can try the entire arsenal of baits and find the most catchy one for fishing on a particular day. It is better to have about 10 fragments tied to the house with different baits. On some of them you can attach spoons with red and white colors.

Who are they going against with the tyrant?

This equipment is best suited for catching sea fish, especially those that move in the water in large schools and are called “running” in a professional environment. Almost every fisherman who has visited the Black Sea at least once has become convinced of how well such tackle works in this body of water. With its help, you can retrieve mackerel, flounder, croakers, katrans, bonito and bluefish from the depths (these species bite well in the early morning and shortly before sunset). Throughout the day, the tyrant effectively catches herrings, bellies, greenfinches, and horse mackerel.

In other bodies of water, with the help of this gear, experienced fishermen manage to pull grayling, herring, and smelt ashore. And venerable masters of fishing in ponds, rivers and lakes have adapted it even for perch, successfully removing “striped fish” from their native element both in summer and winter.

Use for bass fishing

Samodur is a fairly universal fishing tackle; it can be used not only for sea fishing, but also for fishing for perches. With a significant number of baits (5-10), a tyrant can seduce even a sluggish individual. You should not use more than a dozen leashes, since the equipment will become too bulky and difficult to control, and the bait on it may get tangled. Working with such damaged equipment will not be easy.

To successfully catch bass, you will need a short rod with a good reel. A main fishing line 0.15-0.16 mm thick, equipped with a spherical or teardrop-shaped weight, is wound around it, and a “garland” of leashes with sharp hooks is attached above. The nozzles for them are multi-colored beads or cambrics.

Catching pike with herring in England

I was asked to talk about the local method of catching large predators such as pike and catfish. England, of course, is not famous for large specimens of catfish, and in general I will say that all English catfish are imported from France. It's cold and wet here, so 25kg is rare!

However, pike on the free grub of capitalism products grow to quite respectable sizes; the record for this area is 37.4 kg caught on Greengrass Lake.

Over the past two years that I have been here, I have managed to adopt an interesting, simple and catchy method of catching this predator using fresh frozen sea fish, mainly herring, eel or mackerel, but the results of fishing for trout, roach or rudd also bring positive results, although It was noticed that they come across smaller specimens (2-5kg mostly).

At first, my attitude to the method was purely skeptical; I was taught how to polish spoons correctly, by the way, with toothpaste, and how to bait bait so that it would last longer. And everything is for her, for the pike, and here it is for you! Like, what self-respecting pike would covet a herring! And even for ice cream!

But it turned out that this is an excellent bait, especially for large fish. Pike is not only a predator, but also a scavenger, and a terrible one at that! Having looked at the tackle over the shoulder of a local expert, I repeated it in the same image and likeness (Fig. 1), bought a bag of herring (10 pieces, 250-400g each), at that time this bait seemed very large to me and did not inspire confidence .

Rice. 1 The fish has a small rubber clamp on its tail and steel leashes. The size of the fish is 100-400 g depending on the fishing conditions, optimally 200-300 g.

I arrived at the lake at 7 o’clock in the morning, unwound all the gear, set everything up, it was time to hook the herring, but it was soft, the tees were flying out of it. On the first cast, the herring flew in one direction and the tackle in the other. The second time I was more careful and the cast was successful in a different place. I took the lures and went wandering. An hour passed, then another, and then a miracle happened.

The ratchet on the reel (and I used a simple Nevskaya, but with non-inertia ones it is much easier to cast) just began to sing, and of course the adrenaline, you throw everything, fly there, stumble, fall, get up, run even faster, grab the spinning rod and feel the pleasant weight of a large fish at the other end . A couple of minutes and the tired, colossal body of the pike writhes at your feet.

It was not possible to weigh it, and it is prohibited to take the fish with you here (they will be fined heavily), so I had to look, be surprised and part with this beauty. Landed on the front tee and got stuck in the gills. And the herring was deep in my throat.

Since then I have been intrigued by this method, and have found some ways to improve the results.

The best baiting method is to pass the front hook through the fish's gill and pull it out through the mouth. (Fig. 1) This will allow the pike to grab the bait without feeling the hooks, and the fisherman will make a successful hook.

Fish larger than 400 g can be cut in half, at an angle (Fig. 2). In this case the tail section is luckier (like mine). In order to be able to cast well and far, the fish must be kept frozen.

If you dry it for a couple of minutes, wrap it in newspaper and put it in the freezer, and wrap it in foil before going fishing, then there won’t be any big problems with casting.

It helps very well if, before casting, you slightly cut the tail of the fish, releasing the intestines out, while the smell and taste of the bait improves (this should be done especially with odorous sea fish. You can make several shallow cuts at an angle from the back, all for the aroma!

If the bottom of the reservoir is covered with vegetation, then the pike has little chance of finding your bait. In these cases, some fishermen insert a piece of foam plastic into its throat before freezing the fish. This allows the bait to be lifted off the bottom and greatly improves results.

I've seen fishermen use halves of large mackerel, make small longitudinal cuts and simply tie a piece of floating material around it - it works! And some painted fish with food colors (blue, red and also caught, but this is not for everybody!)

You can use a float, only a larger one, then it is better to hook the near tee to the back of the fin. I was struck by another option: they catch it with a small roach (100-150g), and attach a bright plastic sail to a rounded sliding float with an elastic band (Fig. 2). They are usually caught in light winds.

Rice. 2 The sinker is small, symbolic. The beauty of this method of attaching the sail is that it can be removed at any time.

Carefully hold this system under a loose, loose tension, releasing it slowly into the wind. The system only works when released to a depth of a meter; if it is more, then the turbulence of the lower layers stops it.

It was noticed that in the first half an hour after throwing a frozen fish there are no bites, but then, as soon as the fish has thawed, you can expect success. Sometimes you need to tighten the reel and move the bait a meter, very, very slowly and then relax the line, usually followed by a bold bite.

I had a case when seagulls stole all my fish and left me with one small trout, the one that was sitting on a hook. Well, of course, trout is not a herring and you can safely throw it, but still I managed to catch three specimens up to 10 kg. At the end of the day, what was left of my trout was a bitten bag of soft, homogenized tissue that didn’t look like a fish at all.

You must not rush to hook; if you notice that the line is slowly moving to the side, then most likely the fish did not like the place where you threw the bait and decided to eat it in another place!

Give the line without tension, and be patient, it will stop and swallow your bait. And then everything is as according to Sabaneev! If you hurry, then such a soft bait as a herring will remain in her mouth, and the tees will be mercilessly torn out of her mouth without a hook.

The coolest locals buy a small radio-controlled boat with opening sides to drop the bait exactly in the desired position, straight out of the realm of fantasy!!!, but in competitions everyone uses this method.

I modified tees No. 8-9, namely, I removed the barbs for two hooks, leaving only small tubercles. I bait the hook in which the barb remains. This makes it easy to remove them from clothes, as well as from the fish’s mouth, and does not affect the number of fishes.

This all doesn’t sound impressive, I suppose. But it works, you just have to believe in this method, and then luck will bring beautiful, strong and tasty fish!!!

Tackle

Whether fishing will be successful to a greater extent depends on the availability of properly selected and prepared gear. When fishing for herring, the choice of gear plays a huge role in view of the peculiarities of fishing. Most recreational fishermen fish when schools of herring pass along the river.

Herring is a predatory fish, and its fishing has its own characteristics. For fishing, it is better to choose a light spinning rod, and as a tackle - a small, heavy spoon, which, when reeling, makes rotational movements, attracting fish.

The spoon should be equipped with a treble hook, which increases the possibility of catching fish. When casting a spoon, the herring instantly reacts to the rotating spoon and the glare reflected from its surface, swallowing the bait.

Excellent results are also achieved when using spinners 2-4 cm long with a weighted sinker.

Various castmasters weighing from 2.5 to 7 g are actively used when fishing for herring. Their appearance resembles fry and when fishing, you can use various methods of fishing using a spinning rod. The Castmaster is well suited for long casts.

What is the best way to catch herring?

When fishing for herring, various baits and baits are used depending on the period and place of fishing and the activity of the passing school.

As a fishing rod, it is better to use an officially approved spinning rod or a float or donkey fishing rod.

It is preferable to use bait for fishing with a fishing rod:

  • earthworm;
  • dung worm;
  • maggots;
  • bloodworm.

When used for spinning fishing, the following lures are used:

  • rotating black;
  • rotating red;
  • rotating gray;
  • rotating white;
  • vibrotail fish;
  • fluctuating red;
  • oscillating black;
  • oscillating yellow;
  • oscillating golden;
  • sinking wobbler;
  • wobbler neutral.

Hooks are used in medium and small sizes. Fishing is carried out throughout the day.

Herring fishing in the Volga is a good vacation for many amateur fishermen, combining properly organized leisure time and tasty fish with the ability to cook according to various recipes.

When does the herring run on the Volga begin?

The busy time for Volgograd fishermen begins in early May. For just a couple of weeks, herring spawning begins in the Volga River. According to fishermen, freshwater herring is almost no different from sea or ocean herring. From the very morning, a large number of fishermen gather on the concrete coast of the Volga River. A very good time for all fishing lovers.

They call herring – blackback, rabies, zal. But the most common name is still the Volga herring. For many fishermen, it is not the first time to go “hunting” with homemade gear. They make and buy tin, silver and brass spoons.

The herring began to be called zal for the reason that it does not fit in a barrel for pickling; its tail is broken or cut off.

Herring also has many useful, medicinal qualities, one of which is gastronomic. Herring contains approximately 25% fat, is well salted and has tasty meat.

How to catch herring using a spinning rod?

Having permission to catch herring, you can take fishing gear and an inflatable boat and go fishing.

Suitable fishing gear:

  1. spinning rod with spoon;
  2. bottom fishing rod;
  3. an ordinary fishing rod with a float.

It is best to fish with a spinning rod on the river in a boat, throwing the spoon from different sides.

Such a check in different directions will make it possible to find a place with a jamb.

If you manage to get on a school of herring, then you need to pull out and throw the lure as quickly as possible, before the school swims away from you.

Fishermen use spinning rods of any structure and class.

Experienced fishermen clarify that the most optimal spinning rod for catching herring should have the following parameters: rod length no more than 4 meters with a rigid or semi-rigid action. It is good to use feeder rods.

You don’t have to get carried away by the very high price of spinning rods. For such fishing, there may be a more suitable type made of aluminum, with an inexpensive price. This type of spinning rod is good because it will serve you for a long time and has the necessary rigid structure for hooking and pulling out herring. An inertia reel would be a good choice.

The boat must be at least 100 meters away from land. Be sure to anchor the boat. When fishing from the shoreline, it is necessary to throw the spoon and fishing rod sinker into the river away from land. To do this, it is better to use a two-handed spinning rod with thin fishing line and a good reel.

A size 7-9 hook, half a centimeter fishing line, special herring lures and lead weights are very suitable for herring fishing. You can put a so-called “cambric” on the hook on the leash side from a regular white wire.

The spoon should be small and oblong with light weight. It must be secured with a leash under a sinker. It is advisable to have a leash of at least 0.5 m.

How to catch herring

When fishing from a boat, you need to cast the fishing rod to the places where the school is supposed to pass, and you can choose the most successful place using the trial method - casting to different points. It is important to determine the depth of the school of fish - throw a spoon with a sinker and count down until it slides along the bottom. After the bite, immediately reel in the fishing line and again count down until the catch comes out of the water. If you manage to find a school of fish, then you need to cast a fishing rod and pull it out as quickly as possible, before the school swims away.

Experienced fishermen advise sailing a boat at least one hundred meters from the shore. When fishing from the shore, the bait is thrown as far as possible. It is worth twitching the line periodically to provoke the herring to bite. Another method of fishing is with an elastic band (several hooks are attached to the fishing line), but for this you need to know the place where the fish will pass and the depth. If the bite is inactive, then you should change the angle of the elastic band.

During the heat, it is very important to preserve the catch; for this, the fish can be placed in a concentrated saline solution. Water is filled into a bucket and 1 or 2 packs of salt are poured into it. The salt ratio is one kilogram per four kilograms of fish. In this form, the fish will not spoil. If you know some nuances, then fishing success will be ensured.

Spinning

Spinning fishing is all about choosing the right equipment. Tackle for catching herring should be strong enough, but not rough. When choosing a spinning rod for herring, you should choose options that have a test load of no more than 30 grams.

The spoon for herring should be quite small. The best bait will be an oblong-shaped “olive tree”, the length of which does not exceed the size of an ordinary match. You can make your own spinner or fish with store-bought bait. For successful fishing you need fishing equipment.

It may vary, so here are some tips for choosing equipment:

  1. The best hook would be a regular single hook, size 7 to 9, according to traditional numbering. The spinner (store-bought or homemade) must be attached to the main fishing line using a leash. It is good if fluorocarbon or ordinary metal is chosen as the material for the tackle.
  2. Additionally, a weight weighing from 20 to 30 grams is attached to the spoon. This will allow you to make long casts when fishing with a spinning rod.
  3. A spinning reel can be inertial or inertial-free. You will need to wind a cord around it. The most optimal fishing line diameter for herring tackle will be a 0.18 mm cord or a 0.35 mm fishing line. If you plan to fish from the shore, we equip the reel with a larger spool (3000-4000).

The fishing process itself consists of finding a suitable school of herring. After this, the process of spinning fishing turns into a purely technical event.

How to make a homemade spinner? To catch herring, you can make the simplest spoon yourself. To do this, you will need a tin can, from which an oblong-shaped blank in the form of an insole is cut out. There should be holes in it for the hook. The most convenient one will be a hook with a long shank, which will avoid soldering it.

Equipment for catching herring on a spinning rod

Don or Black Sea-Azov herring is a fish that is a coveted trophy for fishing lovers on the Volga. After wintering in the Black Sea, the herring begins to rise along the Don or Volga, when you can start catching herring with spoons or homemade baits. This period occurs at the end of April - beginning of May.

The average size of herring, which can be caught in river spaces using a spoon or other equipment, is from 20 to 25 cm.

There are two subspecies:

  • large (herring reaches 50 cm in length);
  • medium (fish size rarely exceeds 25 cm).

In terms of taste, Don herring is in no way inferior to its Norwegian counterpart.

Fishing methods

There are several ways to catch this fish, which differ in the characteristics of the equipment:

  • fishing for herring using a spinning rod;
  • use of homemade tackle such as an elastic band;
  • the use of tyrants, also related to homemade products.

Each rigging method has its own pros and cons, so choosing the best one is quite difficult. Everything will depend on the preference of the fisherman himself.

Spinning

Rubber

A homemade elastic band is a fishing equipment, the main components of which are:

  • aircraft model rubber of round section;
  • hooks size 8-10;
  • winding ring;
  • reel, which can be homemade;
  • fishing line (main and leader);
  • fasteners;
  • cargo.

All this must be collected in the listed sequence. The best thing would be to use a spinning rod for fishing, which you need to hold in your hands and not let the line sag to avoid empty bites. Lures or several spinners should be placed on the hooks, creating a game in the current that will attract fish.

Catching Don herring

Don herring is an obligatory component for that very first spring fish soup that you wait for all winter. Any river fishing for migratory fish is not an easy task, and its success depends on many factors. When and where to fish, tackle and fishing methods, bait, tips on how to make tackle for herring with your own hands - you will find all this in the article.

Don (aka Black Sea-Azov) herring (Alosa pontica) is that same miracle fish that makes a fisherman’s heart beat faster in early spring.

She spends the winter in the Black Sea, goes to spawn in March and appears in the lower reaches of the Don in mid-April. This species has two main forms: large, up to 30-40 cm long, and smaller - 15-20 cm.

The average size of a fish caught on a hook is 20-25 cm. The gastronomic qualities of the fish are not inferior to the Norwegian herring, beloved all over the world.

When to catch?

The herring movement at the mouth of the Don begins in April, when the water warms up to 8-10 degrees. The large form comes in first, then the smaller one. The most active passage of fish is in May; spawning occurs from mid-May to August. The eggs are spawned by the current in the river bed, we will pay attention to this later.

Calendar of herring runs in the lower reaches of the Don

The given data may vary depending on the weather, especially the prevailing winds at any given time. A strong high wind blows water from the river into the sea and delays the entry of herring into the Don. Low winds, on the contrary, can speed it up.

Spawned herring - the so-called runner - actively hunts on the surface of the water. Herring loses its culinary qualities after spawning, but serves as an excellent object for sport fishing.

Where to fish?

They catch herring from the mouth of the Don to the dam of the Tsimlyansk Reservoir. Before its construction, fish had the opportunity to travel hundreds of kilometers upstream and had significantly more spawning grounds.

There are places where the herring lingers during the move, and they are the most promising. Now the best places for catching herring, according to fishermen, are in the vicinity of Semikarakorsk and Konstantinovsk.

As we have already noticed, the Don herring stays in the riverbed part of the river, on the stream, more often in the middle and upper layers of water, less often in the lower ones. They catch it from the shore, bridges and piers, constantly changing the settings and position of the gear to search for a school.

Mainly artificial baits are used as bait - cambric, flies and spinners. this - in the next section,
