The Kremlin embankment in Kazan is a new landmark of the old city

The waters of the majestic Moscow River flow slowly along the walls of the Kremlin. Its coastlines are encased in gray granite slabs. Along the left bank of the Moscow River there is a picturesque Kremlin embankment, colossal bridges with wonderful architectural forms hang over the quietly splashing waters.

A wide avenue-embankment stretches along the southern Kremlin wall with multi-tiered towers topped with pointed spiers. It is separated from the river by a beautiful parapet. Between the Kremlin wall and the roadway of the avenue stretches an alley formed by relict linden trees with wide, dense crowns.

This marvelous corner of Moscow is the Kremlin embankment. Photos of the avenue with the Kremlin, taken from the Bolshoy Kamenny or Moskvoretsky Bridge, are shocking to the core.

Location

The embankment stretches along the left bank of the Moscow River. It borders on Vasilyevsky Spusk and Lenivka. The length of the banks, clad in granite, is almost equal to the length of the southern wall of the Kremlin. The avenue adjoins the Zotov Chambers and the Alexander Garden. The mouth of the Neglinka overlooks it.

Coastal Street is adjacent to Red Square, the Russian Book Chamber, Moskvoretskaya Embankment and Prechistenka. The embankment street is separated from Moskvoretsky Prospect by a bridge of the same name. Prechistenka and the Kremlin embankment intersect in the area of the Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge.

The history of the creation of the Kremlin embankment

an embankment in Kazan before 2015 , although this area did not look as attractive as it does today. In 2010, several objects were built in the embankment area - Palace Square, the Palace of Farmers and an elite residential complex. The city administration decided to improve part of the Kazanka bank and turn this place into a modern recreation area.

The coastline was expanded and landscaping work was carried out. In 2013, the Universiade was held in Kazan , and part of the embankment was reconstructed for its start. Two years later, the equipment of the entire embankment was completed. The townspeople immediately appreciated the new recreation area.

Today, the one and a half kilometer embankment is one of the most popular places in the city for family and active leisure. By the way, the name of the embankment was chosen through a vote held on the Internet.

From trade route to luxurious waterfront

In the XII-XIV centuries, near the Kremlin walls, where the Moscow River was forded, there was an intersection of two roads. The road that stretched along the coast acquired commercial importance. At first, boats of eastern merchants stopped at the ford, from whom Muscovites received overseas goods in exchange for honey and furs.

And then Russian merchants began to transport their goods along the river and land roads running from different sides of the Kremlin. One of the roads running along the coast began to be called Kremlin Embankment. Moscow in the Kremlin area was quickly transformed. A massive wooden bridge was erected on the Moscow River, just below the ancient ford. The Kremlin was surrounded by brick walls and towers. By the end of the 14th century, the embankment became the center of life; it was built up with trading huts, stalls, shops, ruins and other things.

Embankment alleys

The entire territory of the embankment has several zones designed for different ages of its visitors. At the very beginning, from the Kremlin side, on the embankment there are several restaurants, cafes, a workout area, rentals and carousels. And then there are alleys for different categories of guests, also, however, “diluted” with cafes, shops and other commercial outlets.

The first is the Alley of Arts . It begins with a creative gazebo, where street musicians play in the evenings. And pianists can show off their talent on the local piano. The adjacent gazebo hosts various art exhibitions, and the arts area is completed by an outdoor library. All books for her were donated by city residents and visitors also take them completely free, sometimes taking them home to read. Sometimes the organizers hold a promotion - books brought are rewarded with a certificate for free rental of sports equipment.

The family alley and children's alley will undoubtedly appeal to kids and their parents. Photo zones for the whole family, funny benches, swings, games on the asphalt, a children's library... There is also a nursery here.

Youth Alley is located at the very end of the embankment, but does not suffer from a lack of visitors. After all, there is also a lot of entertainment here - floor chess, checkers, twister and sea battle. Real competitions are often held here.

Rise and decline

In 1693, instead of a wooden bridge, the Bolshoy Kamenny bridge will appear. By 1708, earthen ramparts and bastions would be built on the river bank to protect against the invasion of Swedish troops. But the Swedes will not unleash hostilities. The Russian capital will be moved to St. Petersburg, and the Kremlin embankment will become a place of desolation for many years. Muscovites will set up a garbage dump on it.

A new transformation of the coastal street will begin in 62 years. V.I. Bazhenov will develop a project for its improvement. The banks of the river will be lined with logs, but they will not be very reliable protection against floods.

And only two decades later F. M. Kazakov will create another project for the improvement of the Kremlin environs. The river banks will be strengthened with stone, a through road will be created and many trees will be planted. The Kremlin embankment will be the first in Moscow to acquire stone robes. It will become the center of folk festivities and celebrations for a long period of time.

In 1836, granite finishing of the Kremlin embankment was completed. At the end of the 19th century, a horse-drawn horse will be launched along it. And in 1911, trams began to run on the newly formed Boulevard Ring, becoming a worthy replacement for horse-drawn horses. The tram route will be affectionately called “Annushka”.

Currently, the Annushka tram line covers only three of the ten boulevard rings. In addition to the traditional carriages in which passengers travel, the tram-cafe “Annushka Tavern” runs along the line.

Kremlin embankment

- embankment on the left bank of the Moscow River.
Located between the Bolshoi Kamenny Bridge and the Bolshoi Moskvoretsky Bridge, adjacent to the Prechistenskaya and Moskvoretskaya embankments, and opposite the Sofiyskaya embankment. The Kremlin embankment is the first stone embankment in Moscow.
Back in the 12th-14th centuries, there was a ford under the walls of the Kremlin in the shallow part of the Moscow River. Near the ford, two roads intersected, one of which, running along the river, turned into the modern Kremlin embankment. At the end of the 15th century, the banks of the river were cleared of buildings. With the transfer of the capital to St. Petersburg in 1713, the embankment became a waste dump site, which remained there until 1795. In the 1770s, the embankment was lined with logs according to the design of V. I. Bazhenov. In the 1790s, the Kremlin embankment, according to the design of M. F. Kazakov, was again cleared of buildings, a through passage was built along it, the bank was reinforced with stone, and trees were planted.

The embankment acquired its modern appearance with granite finishing of an inclined retaining wall in 1936. For the most part, the Kremlin embankment runs along the Kremlin wall, past the Vodovzvodnaya, Blagoveshchenskaya, Tainitskaya, 1st and 2nd Bezymyanny, Petrovskaya and Beklemishevskaya (Moskvoretskaya) towers.

There is a pedestrian and bicycle path along the river, which was expanded after reconstruction in 2021. The embankment itself has 3 carriageways in each direction, and a pedestrian path runs under the Kremlin walls.

The nearest metro station from which you can get to the Kremlin embankment is the Kropotkinskaya and Borovitskaya stations. The journey from them will take, on average, 15 minutes on foot.

Parking on the Kremlin embankment is prohibited. There are no public transport stops, catering and retail premises, as well as toilets. There are also no berths for river vessels.
