How to get to Kursky Station in Moscow

Trains from Kursky Station

Kursky Station serves trains departing eastward to Nizhny Novgorod and southward to Kursk and Belgorod, Kerch and Mariupol, Simferopol and Kharkov, Kislovodsk and Adler, Novy Urengoy and other cities. Transit trains traveling from North to South and the high-speed Sapsan train between St. Petersburg and Nizhny Novgorod, for which a special high platform is allocated, also stop here. Long-distance trains depart from the main platform, where there are 5 platforms and 9 tracks. All platforms are high, except for the first one, from which trains depart for Nizhny Novgorod.

In literature and art

  • Kursky Station plays an important role in Venedikt Erofeev’s poem “Moscow - Cockerels”: one of the first scenes of the poem is played out here, from here the main character goes by train to his beloved.

Even if you go left, you will end up at Kursky Station; if it’s straight, it’s still to Kursky Station; if you turn right, you still go to Kursky Station. So go right to be sure to get there.

  • In the novel by the Weiner brothers “A Visit to the Minotaur”, a transit train Yerevan - Murmansk, which does not exist in reality, passes through the Kursky Station, on which Grisha Belash with a stolen Stradivarius violin departs for Leningrad at night.

Electric trains from Kursky station

In the southern direction, from the main platform, electric trains go to Tsaritsyno and Podolsk, Lvovskaya and Chekhov, Serpukhov and Tula. Also from here electric trains run in the Riga and Smolensk directions. The first 2 stops Moscow-Kalanchevskaya and Rzhevskaya are common, and then there is a branch.

To the east, in the Gorky direction, electric trains go to Balashikha and Reutovo, Fryazevo and Pavlovsky Posad, Orekhovo-Zuevo and Vladimir, Elektrogorsk and other stations. These trains depart from dead-end platforms, access to which is through turnstiles. There are a total of 5 dead-end platforms at the station, designed for 13 cars.

To Sheremetyevo Airport

There is no direct connection between Kursky Station and Sheremetyevo Airport. Passengers will travel by metro and Aeroexpress or by metro and bus (minibus):

  • Metro + Aeroexpress Take the Circle Line metro to the Belorusskaya station.
  • After exiting the station, follow the signs “Exit to Belorussky Station”
  • Take the Aeroexpress to Sheremetyevo Airport
  • This is the most expensive option, since an Aeroexpress ticket costs from 300 rubles (June 2021), but the most reliable because it allows you to avoid traffic jams.
  • This option is convenient if your flight departs from terminals D, E or F. But it is inconvenient if your flight departs from terminals B and C, which are located on the opposite side of the airport. To get to them you will need to make another transfer - to the free metro, which connects the two parts of the airport.
  • Metro + bus from Planernaya station
Take the Circle Line metro to Krasnopresnenskaya station.
  • Go to the "Barrikadnaya" station of the Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya (purple) line and go to the "Planernaya" station
  • Go to the airport by bus No. 817 or minibus No. 948

  • Metro + bus from Rechnoy Vokzal station
Take the Circle Line of the metro to the Belorusskaya station.
  • Go to the Belorusskaya station of the Zamoskvoretskaya (green) line and go to the Rechnoy Vokzal station.
  • Go to the airport by bus No. 851 or minibus No. 949.
  • Please note that bus No. 851 first goes to Sheremetyevo-1 (terminals B and C), and then to Sheremetyevo-2 (terminals F, E and D). Minibus No. 949 goes first to Sheremetyevo-2 (terminals F, E and D), and then to Sheremetyevo-1 (terminals B and C).
  • If you are traveling in a large group, it may be more convenient and cheaper to take a taxi. The cost of a taxi from Kursky Station to Sheremetyevo is from 1000 rubles. But the driving time will greatly depend on traffic jams.
  • To Domodedovo airport

    • by electric train or Aeroexpress departing to Domodedovo airport from Paveletsky station - Paveletskaya metro station. Travel time will be 1 hour 10 minutes by electric train and 40–50 minutes by Aeroexpress

    From the history

The lost Crimean War of 1853–1856, when cargo took months to be delivered to the south of the country, showed the need to build transport arteries in Russia and primarily to Nizhny Novgorod and Kursk.

Since there was not enough money in the treasury after the war, in 1857 Alexander II allowed the construction of a railway to Serpukhov and Tula, Orel and Kursk at the expense of investors. In order to save money, the original project was simplified, and the army and prisoners were involved in the construction of the road. In 1866, train traffic began to Serpukhov and the road began to be built further to Kursk.

Traffic to Nizhny Novgorod began in 1865, and the place for the Nizhny Novgorod station behind the Kamer-College Val, officially recognized as the city’s border since the mid-18th century, was chosen by the Minister of Transport himself, P.P. Melnikov. The station is located at the Pokrovskaya Zastava, not far from Bolshoy Nikolsky Lane, now known as Puteysky Dead End. Land in these places was inexpensive, subject to low taxes, and the requirements for sanitation and labor protection were not as strict as in Moscow. The wooden station building was built of wood and, according to eyewitnesses, was narrow and nondescript. The increased passenger flow required expansion of the station, and already in 1865 it was increased with two extensions.

Consolidation of Nizhegorodsky and Kursky railway stations

The railway to Nizhny Novgorod was called temporary in many documents, and the founders were trying to allocate land for the construction of a new station. The owner of the road, the Main Society of Russian Railways, had limited funds and could not independently solve the problem of moving the station closer to the center.

At this time, new railways were being built in Russia, old station buildings were being rebuilt, and it was decided to merge the Kursk station with Nizhny Novgorod. In 1894, the Moscow-Nizhny Novgorod railway was purchased by the treasury, and in January 1896, a merger took place and the Moscow-Kursk, Nizhny Novgorod and Murom railway was created. On the Garden Ring, designed by architect N.I. Orlov, a new station complex is being built. The bright station building, made in a pseudo-classical style, was decorated with columns and stucco moldings on the walls and ceiling inside the premises. The left wing was assigned to Kursk, and the right wing to Nizhny Novgorod. June 14, 1896 became the birthday of the Nizhny Novgorod-Kursky railway station, which soon became known as Kursky.

The old Nizhny Novgorod station served freight and military trains for a long time. Especially a lot of cargo came to the warehouses of the Red Cross and the Metallurgical Plant, the Nobel plant and other enterprises during the First World War in 1914–1917. Over time, new buildings in the capital absorbed the old station and now there are residential buildings on this site.

    Kursky Station in Soviet times

In March 1932, a competition was announced for the reconstruction project of the station complex. The winner was the young 30-year-old architect Georgy Ippolitovich Voloshinov, whose project intended to preserve the architectural features of the building. The renovated station was opened in 1938.

In 1948, the next reconstruction took place, during which the halls were redesigned, but the marble and old stucco were preserved. Under the leadership of Evgeny Lansere, People's Artist of the USSR, who participated in the design of the Kazan and Yaroslavl stations, plafonds were created - allegories of the four rivers with which the Kursk station was now connected - the Oka and Kama, the Volga and the Moscow River.

In 1962, during the Khrushchev struggle against excesses, they decided to significantly expand the building without luxury in decoration, preserving the old premises and without stopping the work of the entire station complex. The new building with stained glass windows was built in 1972 under the leadership of the chief architect of the project G.I. Voloshinov, who knew the previous structure very well. The old premises were preserved as one of the halls of the new station complex.

    Kursk station now

The huge central hall is built on the principle of an aviation terminal and is more than 200 meters long and 40 meters wide. From the spacious underground hall you can go through three corridors to the platforms, to the ticket office or down to the metro. The waiting rooms are located in a restored old building with preserved Lansere lampshades. While here, we find ourselves in the middle of the last century and admire the creation of a talented artist.

The new building sparkles with stained glass windows, and the high 15-meter facade overlooks the station square, where passengers can hide from the rain under a nine-meter folded canopy roof. Escalators connect different levels of the building and an underground storage room, and spacious waiting rooms can accommodate up to 11 thousand people. The multi-storey Atrium shopping center is connected to the station complex by an overpass.

During the reconstruction in 2008–2009, the building was updated from the inside. New displays and escalators were installed, an elevator for the disabled and a children's room were added. Kursky Station in Moscow has become the best in Russia and meets European standards.

    Interesting facts about Kursky Station

    • The newspaper Moskovsky Listok wrote in May 1896 about the opening of the Kursk station: “On May 25, the new combined station of the Kursk, Nizhny Novgorod and Murom railways was inaugurated. After the solemn service, inside, in the restaurants and halls of the 1st and 2nd classes, breakfast was served for 1000 cuverts for the pure public, and on the platforms - refreshments for 1000 workers."
    • A.P. went to his estate Melikhovo, 13 km from Lopasnya station, now the city of Chekhov. Chekhov. On the train they recognized him and looked at him, but the writer pretended not to notice it
    • Once in Tula, a man in peasant clothes entered the carriage and, sitting down, began to eat rye bread with herring. One of the fellow travelers began to be indignant about the inadmissibility of travel in first-class carriages for commoners. The master was indignant and demanded to take the passenger out of the carriage and did not listen to the conductor, who whispered in his ear that he was lucky enough to travel in the same compartment with Count Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoy
    • It is interesting that the reconstruction of 1972 was designed for passenger traffic until 2000
    • Not far from the station complex, at 4th Syromyatnichesky Lane, building 1, building 6, there is the Winzavod Center for Contemporary Art, where exhibitions, festivals and presentations are held, and there is an art cafe
    • From here you can get to two Zakharovo stations, one of which is located in the Gorky direction, on the right bank of the Klyazma River near Noginsk, and the second is on the Zvenigorod branch of the Belarusian direction
    • On the main platform of the station there are the longest platforms in Russia No. 3 and No. 4, designed for 32 cars. Platform No. 11 is a continuation of platform No. 1 and together with it is also designed for 32 cars.

Over more than 100 years of history, the appearance of the station has changed. Now Kursky Station in Moscow is the largest not only in the capital, but also in Russia. But as before, there are cab drivers - modern taxi drivers - standing on the station square, and passengers are also rushing to catch the train.
