The capital's air hub includes airports for various purposes, but there are 6 main ones. In addition to the popular Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo and Vnukovo, Zhukovsky, Ostafyevo and Chkalovsky operate in Moscow and the region. We tell you where each of the objects is located (and you can see more precisely on the interactive map here), what tasks it performs and what place it occupies in the air traffic of the Russian Federation.
“Sheremetyevo”
It is one of the largest airports in Europe . If you ask “Which airport is closer to the center in Moscow?”, then they will answer you that it is Sheremetyevo. 29.7 km from the center of Moscow
The closest settlement to it is Khimki. The second is Lobnya. From Moscow it is located in the northwest. This is also one of Aeroflot's base airports.
Sheremetyevo airport".
The airport complex consists of six passenger terminals :
- A - for business flights;
- B - the old terminal was demolished, and construction of a new one began in its place;
- C - closed for reconstruction. They want to connect the building with the new terminal B to create one single terminal complex;
- D — accepts international and domestic flights;
- E - serves flights of Aeroflot and those companies that are part of SkyTeam;
- F - Royal Flight operates its flights.
The last three terminals are combined into a single South Terminal complex. It is also adjacent to the Aeroexpress station.
This is done for the convenience of passengers who can easily move around the entire complex.
The smallest air gate
Of the main airports serving domestic flights, Zhukovsky has the smallest area. It is also operated for the needs of experimental aviation and test flights. Despite the small area, flights of the intercontinental TU-114 and supersonic airliner TU-144 were accepted here for the first time.
The official opening of Zhukovsky as a terminal for civil flights, state and test aviation took place in 2016. It is planned that by 2021 the volume of passenger traffic will increase to 11 million people.
The Moscow aviation complex, connecting heaven and earth, includes technologically advanced, customer-friendly air terminals - Sheremetyevo, the largest in area, and Zhukovsky, the smallest so far. All harbors are connected to the city by public transport, metro and Aeroexpress trains. The population's needs for air transportation are met at the highest possible level.
“Domodedovo”
The second in terms of the level of passengers received, Domodedovo is located 45 km from Moscow. It is 22 km from the Moscow Ring Road. southeast of Moscow
The airport includes two long runways that run parallel to each other. This is the only airport in Moscow that can simultaneously carry out takeoff and landing operations. The first of the stripes allowed Domodedovo to become the first airport in Russia that could accept the Airbus A380.
Domodedovo airport".
Domodedovo has a special registration system - by island. The terminal has 4 islands of 22 sections each and 3 islands of 20 sections each and 4 sections for baggage check-in. The airport complex consists of one passenger terminal.
Modern technologies and service methods
One of the technological innovations is an automatic announcement system. The main languages in which announcements are read are Russian and English. However, more than twenty more languages are provided. All this is presented automatically, and announcers read out special announcements if necessary.
Another innovation introduced eight years ago is automatic baggage sorting. In addition, this technology independently identifies prohibited items and substances.
Domodedovo provides a self-registration service. This can be done from a desktop computer, laptop, mobile phone and from any device connected to the Internet. For self-registration, special kiosks are installed in the airport building. Here the departing tourist receives a boarding pass. It's better than standing in line at the check-in counter.

“Vnukovo”
Of the airports in Moscow, the largest is Vnukovo. It is located 10 km southwest of the Moscow Ring Road. It ranks 3rd in terms of passenger traffic in Russia.
This is the base airport for companies such as UTair, Pobeda, Yakutia, Gazprom Avia and IFly. It is also the oldest of all those operating. It began to be built back in 1937.
Vnukovo Airport.
Vnukovo-1 includes terminals A, B and D. The last two are connected by a pedestrian crossing. The first serves domestic and international flights. B has been decommissioned since 2021 , and all flights from it have been transferred to A. Terminal D is used only for screening passengers from some regions of Russia.
The Vnukovo-2 complex receives flights from Russia's top leadership , including the president and representatives of other countries. Vnukovo-3 is used to receive and dispatch flights from the Moscow government, business flights and Roscosmos aviation.
Domodedovo
It ranks 3rd in size and 2nd in passenger traffic, namely: about 28 million people fly annually.
There is only one operating terminal on the territory of the airport terminal, but it is planned to create two more, which will increase the speed of work and add scale. Probably one day the area of this air terminal will outgrow the size of Vnukovo.
A distinctive factor is the construction of this airport - it was carried out by prisoners. And it is this air terminal that is recognized as the highest quality. The air hub has 247 departure directions, 83 of which are unique, that is, it is impossible to enter Russian territory in any other way.
Domodedovo is also recognized as the only hub in the country that has the ability to service the Airbus A380, which greatly increases its competitiveness in comparison with other stations in the country.
“Ramenskoye” (“Zhukovsky”)
In the list of all Moscow airports you can find the name of this airport. It is called “Zhukovsky”, and is located at the “Ramenskoye” airfield , which is why it has such a double designation.

Airport "Zhukovsky".
Among the world's civil airports, it ranks second in terms of runway length. It is 5.4 km. According to this criterion, it has first place in Europe and Russia.
The airport complex consists of one, newly built terminal. The airport can accept any aircraft, without weight restrictions.
What about Zhukovsky?
Zhukovsky is one of the youngest international airports in Moscow. There is no Aeroexpress or any railway tracks here. This means that there is only one road from Zhukovsky - by car.
- By public transport, namely bus No. 441, you can get to the Kotelniki metro station (60-70 minutes of travel), and from there to the address you need.
- A shuttle bus runs from the airport to the Otdykh railway station every 15-30 minutes (fare is 100 rubles), and electric trains and commuter trains depart from the station to the Kazan railway station (for example, the luxury train “Sputnik” for 195 rubles. ) The whole journey will take about an hour in total.
- As for car sharing, in Zhukovsky you can use the services of Bumerang (formerly Lifcar) - only they have a lease termination zone here.

This airfield is no longer operational for receiving civil flights, but still serves helicopters of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, but only for landing. It was closed in 2010 , and before that it could receive Yak-42 or An-12 aircraft and helicopters.
The old building of the Bykovo airport.
A year later, complete dismantling of the old terminal building began. Now it no longer exists. On the territory there are premises for warehouses, and parking lots for liners are used as parking spaces for customs vehicles.
remains the surviving active airport building . His specialization is the repair of D-30 aircraft engines.
9.Kazan 41,300 m²

A large-scale reconstruction of the airport was carried out in 1979, after which it did not change its appearance for a long time. The airport renovation happened during the city’s preparation for the Universiade. In 2012, it was recognized as the best airport among airports with passenger traffic of up to 1 million. In 2021, it set its own record, the number of passengers exceeded 2.6 million people. In the first half of 2018, passenger traffic amounted to 1.43 million.
“Ostafyevo”
It is located near the South Butovo district. It was built in 1934 as an NKVD airfield. During the years of Soviet power, it was used by the military, but in 2000, Gazprom Avia carried out work to reconstruct the terminal. So the airport became civilian and can accept passenger flights.
It is used to receive a number of Soviet airliners and the Boeing 737. It is the base airport of the Gazprom Avia company. Positions itself as an airfield for business aviation.
Ostafyevo Airport.
The airport has 1 terminal , the capacity of which is 70 passengers per hour on flights within Russia and 40 on flights to other countries.

“Chkalovsky”
It is a military airfield located 31 km northeast of Moscow , near the city of Shchelkovo. Built in 1930.
Chkalovsky Airport.

There were plans to reconstruct it into a civilian airport, but they were hampered by one factor. The airport is very difficult to get to. To solve this problem, a decision was made to cut down forests in the area in order to build a highway from the Moscow Ring Road to the airport.
Aeroexpress
