PVC boat material, features and types

A PVC boat is the most convenient option in terms of ease of transportation and storage. In addition, it is quite light and durable, which is especially important for those who are used to going out on the water alone. If you need a boat for regular walks and rides on the water, choose the one that you like best in terms of appearance and price.

In the case of fishing, everything is not so simple. This already requires taking into account some important criteria, which we will discuss in detail in this article. They relate to both structural strength and external factors. Even color matters, not to mention functional options that simplify the fishing process and make it more comfortable.

Material

What type of PVC was used in production?
A modern inflatable boat is made of PVC. Manufacturers have long abandoned rubber, as it does not have the necessary safety margin and is subject to aging. But PVC also has its own nuances that you need to know about. There are two types of material: reinforced

and
unreinforced
. It's easy to guess from the names what their differences are. Non-reinforced PVC is only suitable for leisurely walks along a river or lake. If we are talking about fishing, then it is necessary to choose the reinforced type and nothing else. Only he can provide the boat with strength, reliability and durability. Of course, such a boat will cost more, but this is the point on which you should not save in any case, otherwise your boat will not last long.

Fabric base

There are a great many factors influencing the quality of the fabric base, but it is quite difficult to optimally combine their influence. Traditionally, two main parameters are taken into account, namely the type of thread and the density of the fabric.

Most fabrics are made from synthetic fibers, the basis of which is polyester or polyamide (nylon).

These materials are characterized by good strength, have an affordable price and are resistant to rotting processes. Polyester fabric is characterized by high rigidity, while polyamide fabric is flexible and highly resistant to possible tearing.

Seam welding and gluing

How was the gluing done and how strong are the welds?

The inflatable boat is made from PVC sheets welded together. These can be open seams or isolated. In the second option, additional reinforcing tape is applied over the welding, protecting the joint from rupture and excessive pressure. It is the seams that are the weakest point of the boat, and they are the first to tear if you run into driftwood or snags while fishing. Boat with closed joints

is more preferable and is worth choosing.

We also look at the gluing. These are attachments of additional modules to the frame of the boat. For example, oarlocks are simply glued to boats. Two methods are used: cold and hot. There is an opinion that the hot method is better, but this is an outdated misconception. Today, both gluing methods are equally reliable

, and marriage is easily determined by eye. If the module is glued well and no defects are visible, you can safely take the boat, and it does not matter how the modules were connected.

Comparison of RUBBER and PVC boats

Despite the fact that modern boats are called “rubber”, there are significant differences between models made of rubberized fabric or PVC material.

In this article we will talk in detail about the advantages and disadvantages of each type and teach you how to distinguish between them!

Inflatable boat material: PVC or rubber

The common noun “Rubber boats” has stuck since Soviet times, when inflatable boats were made from rubberized fabric. It consisted of a nylon mesh with a gas-containing rubber layer applied on both sides. The fabric was light, relatively durable, and for many years it was the only material used for the manufacture of inflatable boats because there were no analogues.

Since the 90s, PVC fabric began to arrive in Russia, which is a nylon mesh base, coated on both sides with a layer of PolyVinyl Chloride - an elastic composition that ensures the tightness of the material. Affordable price, simpler technology for assembling boats from PVC material gradually and almost irrevocably pushed boats made of rubberized fabric into history. At the time of writing, only one production facility in Ufa produces boats made of rubberized fabric. In the catalog of the online store FirstLodochny.rf they are presented in the section “Rybachok Boats”

Advantages of "rubber boats"

Despite the almost wholesale transition of boat manufacturers to PVC fabric, boats with “old school” rubberized fabric had a number of advantages compared to modern materials:

  • Compact when folded.
With the same dimensions of the inflated boat when folded, rubber boats are more compact due to thinner and more elastic fabric.
  • Assembly in subzero temperatures.
When fishing in late autumn, when the ambient temperature drops below 0 and the reservoirs are still open, a small problem may arise when folding a PVC boat: the PVC fabric becomes coarser, “dumb” and is difficult to roll up, taking up a lot of space. Boats made of rubberized fabric retain their elasticity and are easy to assemble even in the snow.

In defense of PVC fabric, it is worth saying that negative temperatures do not affect the strength characteristics, and there is no need to be afraid that the boat will “fall apart”. A striking example confirming these words is inflatable tubing: most often its base is made of PVC fabric, which, despite the extremely harsh operating conditions, can easily endure all the hardships of skiing from the mountains.

Material Density

What are the strength indicators of the base material?
PVC varies in strength. It is ensured by the multilayer nature and thickness of each layer. This is measured in grams per square meter. The indicator can vary from 700 to 1500 units

.
The higher the number, the stronger the structure. But it is also heavier, so you should not immediately buy the most durable option. 700 units are enough
to go out into open water .
If your fishing often takes place in the reeds, the indicator should be from 900 to 1100 g/m2
.
And for trolling with powerful spinners, it is recommended to choose a boat with a strength rating above 1100 g/m2
. In general, no matter what density you choose, the main thing is to maintain balance. For example, a two-seater model with a maximum rating will weigh about 200 kilograms, which will cause certain difficulties with transportation and launching.

Other selection criteria

You need to choose a PVC boat not only based on the type of control (oaring or motor). We want to talk about three more important criteria.

Useful video on how to choose a PVC boat:

Criterion 1: density of PVC fabric

The minimum declared density of fabric for PVC boats is 750 g/m2 (one square meter of fabric weighs 750 grams). If you come across a figure less than that, it is better to refuse this option, because anything less than 750 g/m2 is an awning fabric that is not capable of ensuring safety on the water. The higher the density, the stronger the fabric; of course, this also affects the price.

Boats with a density of 750 g/m2 are pleasantly priced. They can be purchased, but they are suitable for gentle conditions where there is no threat to the tissue (not shallow water). Although some models with such a fabric density may have other characteristics that allow them to be used in more harsh conditions, for example, like the aforementioned rowing boat Pilot Tourist 300 VND Alloy. It is worth noting that the highest quality PVC boats for motors have a density above 750 g/m2. The motorboats in our rating have a density of 1100 g/m2.

Keep in mind that the higher the density of the fabric, the more expensive the boat is, but also the heavier it is. And folding it into a case in cool weather is also quite difficult (especially for one), especially if the density is 1300 g/m2.

Criterion 2: number of sections and side diameter

Your safety depends on it. Between the compartments there is a partition valve that prevents air from escaping from all compartments if one is damaged. Therefore, 3 or 4 sections are good! And this is something that you can and should pay attention to.

The situation with the diameter of the side is this: the higher it is, the less overlap there will be during waves. This boat is more stable. The diameter of the sides affects the load capacity and reduces the risk of scooping up water.

Paying attention to the number of sections and the diameter of the sides, remember that:

  1. If you are going to use the boat where there are large waves and the wind quickly disperses them, do not buy boats with a diameter of less than 40 cm!
  2. In any case, there must be at least 3 compartments! Keel doesn't count.

Criterion 3: bottom type

Let’s immediately highlight the main types of bottom:

  1. Soft bottom, that is, made of the same material as the cylinders. This option is most often found in rowing boats. Using such a bottom is not very convenient, but you can buy a payol or make it yourself.
  2. Inflatable. Popular with those who fish in shallow water because the draft is minimal. You should also choose an inflatable bottom if your feet get cold from the usual cold bottom.
  3. Rigid-flat when a plywood slate is laid on the bottom of the boat. This is an excellent option for boats with motors up to 5 hp, including electric ones. Our advice in this case: do not overpay for the keel, because with such engines the advantages of the keel are not felt, but a hard bottom is very necessary so that the structure of the boat becomes more rigid, and the vessel itself glides better through the water.
  4. Hard bottom with inflatable keel. This option is for you if you want to get a motor of 5 hp or more. With this power you can go on planing, and at this speed the boat will become more maneuverable and stable due to the keel.
  5. NDND. This is a type of inflatable bottom, but it can be inflated to the desired pressure. NDND is needed for motorboats with a rigid transom. This bottom can be easily assembled. Due to it, the ride becomes softer when hitting a wave, and the load capacity also increases.

Bottom

What is the bottom of the boat made of?

The cheapest PVC boat will have a soft bottom

.
This is a canvas simply stretched between air tanks. You won't be able to stand on your feet in such a boat, and in general it is extremely uncomfortable. The inflatable bottom module
also has its disadvantages. Especially if we are talking about fishing, where encountering various obstacles is inevitable. It is quite easy to spoil such bottom options.

The best option is a hard bottom.

It can be aluminum or plywood. The first option is more preferable, but at the same time it is expensive. Plywood is less resistant to constant moisture and will sooner or later come apart, but it can be easily replaced by purchasing and cutting out the bottom from a regular sheet.

Features of PVC

The main difference is the material. PVC boats are made of polyvinyl chloride, a synthetic (artificial) material that is a colorless transparent plastic with increased strength and elasticity properties. PVC is very resistant to mineral oil, acids, alkalis, ultraviolet radiation, and temperature changes. In addition, its superelasticity allows the material to restore its original shape after the directed application of mechanical force. Based on the described properties of PVC, it is not at all surprising that this material was chosen as the most promising and reliable basis for the manufacture of inflatable fishing boats. PVC fabric for boats is suitable for this in all respects; in addition, its use can significantly reduce the weight of the boat (the kits are liftable, fishermen spend less effort when transporting their equipment to the water) and cost.

To summarize: rubber boats, of course, are still in use, but they are already obsolete; today polyvinyl chloride is the most modern material for PVC boats.

PVC models:

  • Conveniently roll up into compact sized kits.
  • They can easily withstand long-term winter storage when folded, restore their original shape without causing damage (light creases in the fabric can be straightened using the short-term heat of an ordinary household hair dryer),
  • They are cheaper than boats made of rubber, hi-polon, RIBs and completely rigid-hulled small boats,
  • A two-seater PVC inflatable boat can be launched and pulled back into the water without much difficulty by one adult. A large motor model, equipped with special handles and transom chassis, can also be rolled along the shore by one fisherman, without outside help, which is very convenient. You will find transom chassis and wheels for them in a special section of our online store;
  • PVC boats with a large balloon diameter (over 40 cm in diameter) reflect the action of waves well due to their high elasticity.
  • PVC in its pure form does not burn (only additives to this material can burn), but it can melt.

We have listed the main and most important advantages of PVC material for making boats.

Size and load capacity

How many people and cargo can the boat accommodate?
Boat capacity

– the parameter is purely personal and depends on which company you plan to use the watercraft with. But now the two-seater design is the most popular, and it is better to take it, even if you go out on the water alone. There is only one canister for seating, and the bow and stern are designed to accommodate cargo.

The larger the boat, the more powerful the motor it will need. A two-seater model can move with a 5-15 horsepower engine, while a 4-seater will require 20 horsepower or more.

In addition to capacity, there is a carrying capacity

. As a rule, they are directly related, but may differ from one manufacturer to another. For example, some companies like to embellish the data of their products, and in the store it is easy to find a boat with a capacity for 4 people, but with a carrying capacity of only 350 kilograms. It's easy to calculate how much each passenger should weigh and how much cargo you can take with you. You should choose a boat based on your preferences. Also, if you are fishing alone and have a 4-seater model, it will be difficult to handle.

Basic design

What kind of steering is the boat designed for?

Thanks to its light weight, the inflatable boat can be easily moved with the help of oars. But rowing by hand over long distances can be difficult, so it is better to use an outboard motor. The ideal option is a universal design

, equipped with both oarlocks and transom.
This will be the most expensive model, but the most convenient. In reed thickets or in shallow water you can easily move by oars. Plus, rowing doesn't scare away the fish. And if you need to move a long distance, just lower the motor and move on it. On the other hand, if fishing takes place exclusively in small rivers or lakes, it makes no sense to overpay for a transom
. In this case, you can save a lot of money on it.

20 best PVC boats

Features of PVC material and PVC boats

  • PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is a material resistant to cold, sunlight, and water: durable, wear-resistant, non-decomposing, non-rotting.
  • Compared to rubber, PVC is lighter and more convenient to use and does not require a special approach during storage.
  • PVC is easy to repair, PVC inflatable boats are easy to transport and take up little space when folded. Inflatable fishing boats made of PVC do not sink even when completely flooded with water or with one damaged compartment, so PVC boats are often used for rescue operations, rafting on mountain rivers, and passing rapids.

Transom

What is the transom made of and how is it attached to the base?

The transom is the aft rigid part on which the motor and other auxiliary equipment are mounted. Wheels are also mounted to the transom, designed to transport the boat along the shore, so as not to tear the bottom on bushes and other sharp objects.

The transom can be removable. It looks like a bracket that attaches to the back of the boat. Not the most convenient design, but if you initially have a rowing boat, you don’t have to change it entirely, but simply buy such a module for it.

The transom can be aluminum or wood. Here it is important to look both at the material itself and at its attachment to the base. Most often, manufacturers use a design with grooves. That is, there are recesses on the boat into which the panel is inserted before inflating. The best option is an aluminum transom. It is lightweight, durable and not afraid of contact with water. This will also affect the price, but only slightly, and it’s not worth saving on such a detail.

Understanding inflatable boats

Inflatable boats are an excellent option for those who cannot afford to store a large watercraft, but cannot live without fishing and active recreation. In the article we will look at the options for inflatable boats that can be bought in Belarus. What are they made of, what important characteristics are there, as well as hidden nuances. Intex Challenger inflatable boat , but why it is not suitable for an avid fisherman.

What are inflatable boats made of and what types are there?

Inflatable boats are made from glued rubber or multilayer PVC material. Rubber boats are lighter due to the thickness of the skin, more flexible and more compact when assembled, but rubber is inferior to PVC in terms of wear resistance, strength, durability and maintainability. In addition, rubber boats rot and rot at the seams if they are assembled without drying them properly. Let's focus on PVC boats , although they are not so convenient to pack and transport.

Inflatable PVC boats

First, let's decide why we need a boat and how many people we plan to take on board. If its main purpose is hiking , then first of all you need capacity for travelers and supplies, that is, a large boat. Among its main characteristics is passenger capacity . To do this, human figures are drawn on a nameplate attached to the hull or transom board: two, three, four.

Also important is the carrying capacity in kilograms , based on the accepted standard weight of one equipped passenger with gear of 100 kg. We choose a boat, first of all, taking into account how many people it is going to accommodate. It must be borne in mind that before setting sail, the boat must be delivered to the reservoir and brought to the water. A two-seater PVC boat with a transom board for an outboard motor and a rigid bottom weighs approximately 35 kg. To this add oars, anchors and other equipment and supplies. If you are 2-3 people per boat, then you can handle it easily. If you are alone and you just can’t get close to the water, think about transom wheels and a boat trailer.

The next criterion will be the planned method of our movement - oars or motorized .

Rowing boats do not have a transom board, but more often they have the same contours of both bow and stern; in fact, you choose where your bow is and where your stern is.

Larger rowing boats are usually not produced, maximum 4-seaters. Rowing boats are good for overgrown shallow waters and ponds in protected areas where motorized boats are prohibited. Such boats also include recreational inflatable kayaks (for example, from Intex, which is well represented in Belarus).

PVC motor boats come in a variety of shapes, sizes, purposes and designs. Their common feature is the presence of a transom board for outboard motors in the stern. Large, inflatable hulls with plastic bottoms, RIB boats can mount up to four 500 horsepower outboard motors on a single transom board. It is clear that smaller ones can be used for hiking and fishing in Belarus.

Just like the indicated load capacity, each boat model has a power limit for the installed outboard motor indicated in the technical data sheet. This is done to protect those in the boat from overloading the stern due to the size and weight of the outboard motor and capsizing the boat from exceeding the permissible speed limit of this model.

Consider, for example, the characteristics of the popular boat model Vivax T280 (photo above). The transom is stationary and allows the use of a motor of up to 5 hp. Designed for 2 people with a total load capacity of 220 kilograms. This option is perfect for fishing in Belarus. Usually, when choosing a motor boat, they immediately think about the motor; here, additional advice from the salesperson in the store will not be superfluous.

What should we pay attention to when choosing an inflatable boat model?

We have already written about the types of inflatable boats , now let’s go over the nuances when choosing. “Safety first” as the British say – safety comes first. Your future boat must have at least 3 air compartments with individual nipples;

be sure to have a standard handrail around the entire perimeter, which you can grab onto if you fall into the water or capsize the boat;

a bottom reinforced with additional layers of PVC and an inflatable keel, if your body of water is large enough and the waves can reach half a meter or more.

The hard covering of the bottom from the inside of the boat - payol - is also an important detail; it allows you to calmly stand up in the boat and not be afraid of dropping sharp objects. The disadvantages of a hard bottom include difficulties in installing it when assembling or disassembling the boat. All inflatable boats, regardless of size, are equipped with oars (the oarlocks form part of the hull) and all have a bow anchor eye.

Pay attention to the fastening of removable seats (if provided). The fastening straps should not be glued to the top of the hull, but should have an upper adhesive reinforcement made of the same material as the boat cylinders. Some models have inflatable seats, these seats should also have a rope around the entire cushion.

If you are concerned about the full set of life-saving equipment required by the State Inspectorate of Small Boats (GIMS), then it is not included in the sales kit and must be purchased separately.

See the full list on the inspection website; I just remind you that rowing boats up to 2.5 meters long and motors with a power of less than 2 horsepower are not required to have registration, but have their own list of mandatory life-saving equipment.

The same is true with additional equipment that makes your stay on board and servicing the boat more comfortable. We choose an echo sounder with a holder, a gas tank mount, an additional seat, hanging lockers, holders for fishing rods and spinning rods, a running and/or parking awning, running lights, a targa, and so on, based on the planned activity and the size of the craft.

Choose color and shape to suit your taste. They have virtually no effect on seaworthiness. Of course, camouflage is preferable for fishing and hunting, but fish can also be caught from a bright red boat. We would recommend bright colors to tourists; such a craft is easier to spot from the air during search and rescue (God forbid!) operations.

It is best to store the boat in an inflated but slightly lowered state so that there are no wrinkles or kinks on the hull. If you collect it in a case in a deflated state, make sure that it is well dried. The PVC hull material is not afraid of moisture, but the transom board made of bakelite or treated plywood can rot over the winter.

Conclusion: what and where to buy an inflatable boat?

We recommend you a PVC boat with a transom board, even if you do not plan to immediately purchase an outboard motor. The model is to your taste, and the size is determined by the number of people you plan to accept and accommodate with amenities:

280 – 340 cm long. (it will be comfortable for two) 340 – 380 cm (for three) 380 – 420 cm (suitable for fishing with four)

If fishing is not so important for you, but you just want to relax and ride, then consider the option of an Intex Challenger inflatable boat. This is what I always take on trips to the sights of Belarus and the boat has never let me down.

  • Easy to assemble/disassemble
  • Adequate price (about 400 rubles)
  • Complete set, no need to buy anything extra (except for life jackets)
  • Ideal for two
  • Appearance

The downside is the oars, they are really short and not very comfortable, you should immediately take an extra knee for them.

Take the time to browse thematic websites on the Internet and talk with a sales consultant at a specialized store before making a decision. Good luck with your choice!

Design features

What additions and design features are there?

A modern inflatable boat can be quite comfortable. Manufacturers try to equip them with as many options as possible. For example, it is very convenient if the boat has holders for spinning rods

.
After all, we are talking about fishing, and thanks to such modules you will be able to fish with several fishing rods and not experience discomfort. A nice addition will be the awning
attached to the bow. It will protect your luggage from getting wet during the rain, and if it is large, it will also protect you.

You should also pay attention to the transport modules.

If your boat has a transom wheel mount, you won't have to drag the boat on its bottom along the ground.
A very convenient thing when going out on the water alone. If the boat is a two-seater, it will be an advantage to have shrouds on the sides
. They are comfortable to hold and help with carrying.

Color

What is the best color for fishing?

The question “which boat to choose” concerns not only the technical side, but also the visual one. This is very important for fishing. If your model is painted in acid colors and looks like a life raft, you can forget about catching wary predators such as pike perch. Suspicious fish simply will not want to approach defiantly bright objects. That is why while fishing you need to remain as inconspicuous and secretive as possible. In reeds and thickets, the best option would be a camouflage color. And if you're fishing open water, shades of blue and green will work well. They are practically invisible from under water.

Manufacturers

Which manufacturer should you choose?
The market for PVC boats is huge and diverse. At the same time, there are no clearly defined leaders. If we talk about Russian companies, Aqua

and
Tonar
.
They are durable, reliable and have long been in demand among fishing enthusiasts. If the issue of saving comes first and you are looking for the cheapest model, then pay attention to the products of the Lotsman
. In terms of cost, this is the best option, but with its own characteristics.

If saving is not a question at all, and you want to choose the most powerful boat in all areas, then it makes sense to look at Badger

or
Gladiator
. These manufacturers specialize in PVC products and boast the highest quality. But their price often corresponds to a full-fledged plastic boat.

What material is better to choose a boat from?

Introduction

If you like to relax near ponds, rivers and lakes or are a big fan of fishing, sooner or later your arsenal should be replenished with a boat. Depending on the purpose for which the boat will be used, the material from which it is made will also differ.

Modern boats are made from the following materials:

  • PVC,
  • plastic (fiberglass),
  • polyethylene,
  • aluminum,
  • tree.
PVC

Inflatable boats made of PVC are lightweight and sufficiently durable. The material is made of several layers, due to which its thickness reaches 1 mm. Some boats are additionally coated with a protective layer. It is responsible for additional surface strength. More details can be found here. Therefore, such a boat cannot be damaged by running into a snag or other obstacle.

Light weight, on the one hand, allows you to conveniently move the boat - the trunk of a car is quite suitable for this. The disadvantage of such a boat is the limitation in the power of the selected motor.

If you like an inflatable boat, pay attention to its dimensions. A significant portion of the declared size is “eaten up” by inflatable sides, etc. If you plan to fish alone, a small boat will be quite comfortable. At the same time, keep in mind that if the instructions indicate the maximum permissible number of passengers, reduce it by at least one. Or check the dimensions carefully.

Plastic (fiberglass)

This material is not subject to rotting. Mold does not appear on it. It's quite light. The bottom made of this material is not overgrown with shells. In addition, such a boat is easy to prepare for the summer season, unlike its “wooden” counterparts.

The downside is that you will need a trailer to transport the boat. In addition, plastic is a fragile material. It is very easy to get a hole while sailing in such a boat. Fishermen do not like such boats for one simple reason: for some reason, manufacturers take into account only the interests of vacationers, but not fishermen.

Polyethylene

This material can withstand temperatures down to minus 30 degrees. The downside is the high price. This material is gaining popularity among its segment.

Aluminum

More suitable for fishermen than other materials. Of course, such a boat can only be transported in a trailer. Those who love a powerful motor will choose a boat made of aluminum. Some users complain that after a while the paint on such boats peels off and they begin to leak water. If used carefully, this boat will last a long time.

Tree

The most environmentally friendly material, but already outdated. A wooden boat will have to be thoroughly cleaned before the season. Over time, the tree loses its properties.

Conclusion: if the issue of transportation and storage causes stress, then the most optimal purchase will be a PVC boat. It can always be folded compactly. It will not bring much comfort to its passengers and will not be able to cut through water at the speed of light. But, with careful care, such a boat will perform all its declared functions perfectly!

See you!
