The durable fishing line is made of two threads welded into a monolith and is characterized by high strength and minimal moisture absorption. Due to the speed of immersion in water, the fishing line is convenient for use in reservoirs with fast currents or at great depths. The model can be used for fishing with baits of various weights.

The dark gray color makes the line invisible on muddy bottoms. Flexibility and strength at the knot allow it to be used as a main line or leader. The fishing line has no mechanical memory, so it is carefully unwound and placed on the reel. In addition, this allows you to cast the lightest bait even after storing the line on the reel for a long time.

Pros:

  • Quick dive.
  • Invisibility in water.
  • Does not absorb moisture.
  • The base is a double thread.
  • Excellent quality materials.

Minuses:

  • High price.

An excellent fishing line with a soldered structure is close in strength to a full-fledged cord. Thanks to this and additional abrasion resistance, the model is suitable for several fishing methods.

This line is made of fluorocarbon, which when immersed in water acquires “chameleon” properties. Because of this, even large-diameter tackle remains invisible to the fish.

The dense structure of the model provides high strength and low stretch coefficient. The tackle is suitable for float and spinning fishing. Fast diving increases the comfort of fishing at depth and when casting bait over long distances.

The fishing line is abrasion-resistant, elastic and tear-resistant, and is reliable in knots. The thread is wound tightly onto the spool without forming coils when unwinding. The fishing line can be used to knit a leash or as a base.

Pros:

  • Abrasion resistance.
  • Quick dive.
  • Tight winding.
  • Transparency in water.
  • Relatively low price.

Minuses:

  • Short unwinding length on the “native” reel.

Elastic fishing line does not cause difficulties when used on various reels. The low tensile strength allows for complete control of hooking fish on long casts, but fishing with short tackle will require the angler's professional skills.

  • Does not always withstand the declared load.

A universal fishing line with a reasonable price and good characteristics for float fishing, winter fishing and spinning fishing. The model does not tangle when unwinding from the reel and is equally suitable for beginner fishermen and professionals.

Monofilament line

Monofilament fishing line is the most common on the market and can be found in a wide range of colors. Manufacturers claim that almost all such fishing lines are either invisible to fish in the water or clearly visible to the fisherman above the water. Below we have analyzed the most popular colors of monofilament fishing lines and described the advantages of each.

Yellow

This highly visible fishing line is perfect for fishermen who detect bites “by eye” by the vibrations of the gear. The bright color helps you not to lose sight of the fishing line against the background of the water and helps you detect even the weakest bite. At the same time, yellow fishing line is easier for fish to notice underwater. Such a line is useful when fishing in muddy water, since in the thickness of clear water such a thread is easy to notice. But this game is worth the candle if you go after aggressive fish, which may not pay attention to the fishing line in pursuit of the bait. There is a time and place for yellow line. Often the ability to detect a bite by eye is more beneficial than reducing interest in your bait due to the caution of the prey.

Red color

They say that red fishing line is also almost invisible under water. This fact is confirmed by studies that have shown that the red color fades noticeably in the water column. On the other hand, divers claim that red shades do not so much fade as blacken. Those who use red line appreciate that it is easy to see above the water. Additional confusion is created by companies that produce red hooks. They say that such tackle attracts more fish, since red is the color of blood. Fishermen do not understand: why is the red line called invisible, and the red hooks are positioned as very noticeable? In any case, red is one option you can try if you want to change the color of your line.

Green color

The green line blends well with the water. Most bodies of water. in which it is customary to fish, they have one or another shade of green. Like camouflage, green thread camouflages well in the water column and is suitable for anglers who want to hide their line from a potential catch. At the same time, green line is more visible than transparent line in clear water. Overall, green line is a good choice for many situations.

Transparent fishing line

Clear monofilament is worth taking with you if you are going after particularly observant fish. While fluorocarbon's properties help hide line underwater, clear monofilament works well in any situation. Another color on the market is clear blue. Such a line is still invisible in the water, while it is easier to see above the water.

Features of braid coloring

The disadvantages of braided cord include its higher visibility in water compared to monofilament. The issue of camouflage dyeing of braided cord to match the color of the water in the pond becomes relevant. The issue of coloring the cord yourself is more complicated in this regard compared to coloring monofilament.

Converting a dark-colored braid to a lighter one is problematic , since the light color lies on the dark one, and the result of dyeing is difficult to predict. If it’s the other way around, the result is more predictable.

To restore the color of the braid, it is advised to simply rewind the fishing line in reverse - the color of the fishing line is better preserved at the beginning of winding on the reel.

If you want to change the color of the cord to a darker one, it is recommended to use strong natural dyes. Chemical dyes can destroy the rather complex structure of braided fishing line and affect its tensile properties for the worse. It is also not recommended to heat the cord at a high temperature for a long time - the integral structure is damaged, the braid begins to fray and the breaking load decreases.

Brown

You can dye light wicker brown using tea:

  • boil a pack of any cheap tea 50 grams per glass of water for 5-10 minutes;
  • let it brew and cool in a closed container for 40 minutes;
  • put a coil of braid into the tea leaves that have cooled to a temperature of less than 50°C;
  • within an hour the braid begins to acquire a yellowish-brown tint;
  • After keeping the braid in the tea leaves until the desired result is achieved (8-48 hours), remove the coil and rinse in cold water;
  • dry.

Yellow, tan, brown

Painting the braid with plant bark and tannins will change the color to dark yellow, yellow-brown or brown depending on the concentration of the solution and the exposure time, and in addition, the tannins will strengthen the structure of the cord.

You can use: oak bark, alder bark, walnut shells.

  1. Prepare a strong infusion using one of the above mentioned ingredients:
      crush the ingredient as finely as possible;
  2. cover completely with water;
  3. boil stirring for 20-30 minutes.
  4. Place the coil of cord into the solution that has cooled to 50°C.
  5. Allow to stand (8-48 hours) until the desired result is obtained.
  6. Rinse thoroughly in water.

Green

1st method.

  • pour 10 ml of glycerin and 20 ml of anise drops into 1/2 liter of hot water;
  • lower the cord;
  • hold until the required shade is obtained;
  • remove and rinse in water.

2nd method.

  1. Preparation of a decoction of finely chopped herbs:
      chop the green grass (any) as finely as possible;
  2. to fill with water;
  3. boil for 10-15 minutes;
  4. let steep for at least 1 hour in a closed container and cool to less than 50°C.
  5. We lower the bay into the solution.
  6. Let stand (8-48 hours) until the desired color and shade are obtained.
  7. Rinse very thoroughly.
  8. Dry it.

Expert opinion

Knipovich Nikolai Mikhailovich

Zoologist, hydrobiologist. I am interested in fishing at a professional level.

Important! If, after a long soak in a solution of natural ingredients, the braid has not acquired the desired color, you should repeat the operation by preparing a more concentrated solution.

When winding the braid onto a reel, it would not be superfluous to pass it through a tampon moistened with any vegetable oil (preferably coconut). In addition to fixing the color, this will increase the service life of the braid.

Coloring braided and monofilament fishing line blue

Using indigo-carmine , you can dye braided line and regular monofilament fishing line blue, dark blue, or light blue. The chemical composition of the dye does not destroy the structure of the braided fishing line.

Coloring recipe:

  1. Add a small amount of blue to 200 ml of water heated to 50 C:
      2-3 drops to get blue;
  2. 4-5 drops for dark blue;
  3. 6-8 drops for blue.
  4. Lower the cord coil.
  5. Soak in the solution until the desired result is obtained (1/2 - 2 hours).
  6. Remove and rinse.
  7. Dry.

Ink for a fountain pen or stamp paint in any color

This method of dyeing is relatively safe for braided fabric . Please note that ink is an alcohol solution of dyes.

Ink is a non-permanent dye. Coloring the braid with high-quality ink (depending on the intensity of fishing) lasts for a month.

Repeated inking is not recommended. This dyeing method can be recommended as an experiment to quickly select the color of the cord.

  • dilute the ink with water depending on the desired coloring result (to obtain a deep dark color, the ink does not need to be diluted);
  • heat to 40°C;
  • dip the cord in ink;
  • wait until the desired result is obtained;
  • rinse thoroughly with cold water.

  • Good rigidity and durability.
  • Minimal memory effect.
  • Smooth surface.
  • Low price.

Minuses:

  • The black color is convenient for marking the release of the bait, but remains visible to the fish.

The fishing line is universal in the choice of fishing method and meets the needs of experienced fishermen, although it is also suitable for amateurs. The low cost allows the gear to be used for training beginners and exploring water bodies.

Nylon or fluorocarbon?

The fisherman needs to see and control the line well, but it is important that it is invisible to the fish. Let's look at the most common colors of monofilament fishing line.

Transparent fishing line, regardless of the material, retains its color up to the depth of penetration of light waves. It is difficult for the fisherman to observe the movement of the fishing line on the surface of the water. There is a line variant commonly referred to as clear blue. This line is fluorescent, clearly visible, but also clearly visible to fish underwater. It is pertinent to note that the refractive index of light of water is 1.33, that of nylon fishing line is 1.53, and that of fluorocarbon fishing line is 1.42. This makes fluorocarbon monofilament 40-60% less visible than regular nylon or copolymer.

A good example of such a product is the Japanese Momoi Chameleon Nano-Soft fishing line, made from MIJ Multipolymer. It has a fluorocarbon-based Hameleon coating and is therefore invisible to fish.

I would also like to highlight the pink fluorocarbon fishing line. Manufacturers claim that pink monofilament is difficult to detect underwater. Scientific research shows that pink fishing line changes color underwater, becoming invisible not only to fish, but also to humans.

Braided fishing line

Braid has many advantages, but invisibility underwater is clearly not one of them. Braided fishing line has excellent strength with a thin diameter, good long-range casting and low elongation. These properties justify this choice when fishing with a large number of underwater obstacles, such as algae, as well as in muddy and dirty water.

To get the most out of braid in clear water, use a fluorocarbon leader. We recommend using knots such as the Double-Uni knot or the Alberto knot. This allows fishermen to combine the best properties of two types of fishing line: strength and stealth.

There is a lot of conflicting information about what color and type of fishing line to choose so that the fish do not notice it. Despite the controversy and inaccuracies, there are unspoken rules for anglers looking for the best line for their situation. Fluorocarbon line is truly the most invisible in the water column, while braid is the strongest and most easily visible above the water. The same can be said for brightly colored fishing lines, such as red or yellow. They are easy to see above the water, which means you can visually identify even the most hesitant bite. It is worth remembering that picky fish can also notice such a fishing line.

Interesting Facts

  • It has been proven that perches are able to distinguish colored objects over long distances. They say that predatory fish bite well on bait at night, in muddy water.
  • Black perch and pike perch are able to perceive polarized light. But pike have a different eye structure and whether they see this type of light or not is difficult to say.
  • In fresh water, line of warm colors will be noticeable even in dirty water, since such shades correspond to light with a long wavelength. But blue and green shades will be the least noticeable in the water, as they merge with the water and the sky reflected in the water.

Let’s say unequivocally that there is no absolutely invisible fishing line in nature. The choice of this or that fishing line should depend on the time of day, on what kind of fish is being hunted. Everything should come down to minimizing the noise that the line creates.
