How to spend a weekend: a flea market at a museum or kayaking on Vorobyovy Gory

origin of name

France is considered the birthplace of such markets. Translated from colloquial French, this phrase means: a crowd of people, a flea market, a pile of junk. In the center of Paris, near the Saint-Médard temple, a square was formed where residents brought old, unnecessary things: dishes, shoes, furniture, clothes.

This unusual name for a place where trash accumulates was given because of torn, dirty clothes, spoiled by moths and covered in fleas. Often, spontaneous markets were considered a source of contagious diseases. Over time, flea markets spread and changed their appearance. They became clean, cultured and organized.

Among the broken, old things, rare, unique things began to appear.

At all times, market prices were aimed at buyers with low incomes. To attract passers-by, concerts, musical accompaniments and costume performances are organized. The definition of “flea market” by the beginning of the 20th century. began to be called all major flea markets in European countries and Russia.

The history of the appearance of flea markets in Moscow

The flea market first appeared in France in the 19th century. At first it was a place where ragpickers took things thrown away by people.

From there, the place for selling used items with such an interesting name spread to other countries under the same name.

If earlier there was an idea that only the lower classes of the population, the poor, went to flea markets, now this activity has become popular and even fashionable. Now the expression flea market is trending. Here you can meet antique collectors, tourists, and simply antique lovers. And for some, the flea market is a meeting place with like-minded creative people.

What you need to know before going to a flea market

Before visiting the market, it is recommended to read the following recommendations:

  • Check the opening hours of the selected market . Look at reviews on social networks, get acquainted with the prices of things. Determine the exact amount of purchases. Remember that evening prices are much lower than morning prices.
  • Take a pen and notebook for notes . Enter the locations of counters with the desired products and their prices, so that you can then return for the selected item.
  • Don't rush to spend money . First you need to look around, get to know the market. Often a similar item can be purchased cheaper at a nearby counter.
  • Carefully examine the clothes you like , not hoping that the stains will disappear after washing. This rarely happens.
  • When going shopping, remove all jewelry and expensive watches . A modest appearance will help reduce the price of the selected product when trading.
  • Do not purchase things, objects and clothing in unsightly condition . Don't be tempted by the low price. Restoration and repairs are very expensive.
  • You need to bargain and talk calmly and politely . Not asking for a price reduction by half is an insult to the stall owner. It is enough to offer two-thirds of the indicated amount.
  • You need to meet, communicate and call back with antique dealers. For those who are building a specific collection, they will look after and bring items.

  • When going to a flea market, you need to put on worn-out shoes and take a bag of sandwiches . This will help avoid blisters and save time in queues at food stations.

“Dance as a reflection of the soul...” at the Garden Ring Museum

Location: Garden Ring Museum, Mira Avenue, building 14, building 10

Date: March 3–4

Time: 11:00–18:00

“Dance as a reflection of the soul...” is an exhibition of black and white photographs, this is a course project by aspiring photographer Nikita Bakalov. He believes that a monochrome color scheme helps to better convey clarity and geometry of movement. Now he is a third-year student at the Moscow State Institute of Culture.

What is dance? It emerged from gestures; it is a set of signals and signs that can often tell much more about a person than words; it is a reflection of his thoughts and experiences. Nikita filmed his project in an aerial acrobatics and dance studio in Istra, in a children’s and youth creativity studio, and in classes at the choreography department of his university.
