Ob Reservoir: recreation and fishing

Description of the reservoir

The reservoir is large, its area reaches 1082 sq. km. It stretches in length along the bed of the Ob River for almost 200 km, and in some places is 22 km wide (there are sections only 2 km wide). The greatest depths in the reservoir are 25 m. In winter, it is completely covered with ice.

Along the reservoir and on its banks there are numerous pine forests, among which the most famous are Karakansky, Ordynsky, and Aleussky. Because of the picturesque nature and clean air, camps where children relax, tourist centers, and dispensaries are located on the banks of the reservoir.

Islands

The reservoir is rich in islands. They are located along the entire length of the reservoir and are absent in the area immediately adjacent to Novosibirsk. Among the largest and most famous among fishermen: Atamanovsky, Shumsky Cordon, Dikiy, Shlyapovsky, Elbansky, Sharapsky, Elban, Khrenovy, Kamenny, Khokhlov Borok, Kamensky, Tan-Van,

Krasnoyarsk Borok, Semizarodny, Polovinsky Borok, Pichugovsky, Krasny Yar, Nechunaevsky, Logunov.

Fishing is developed in the Ob Reservoir. It is rich in valuable species: sturgeon, sterlet, nelma, muksun, whitefish, whitefish, peled. But fishing, including amateur fishing, is aimed at catching pike perch, carp, burbot, tench, bream, pike, grayling, ide, roach, crucian carp, dace, and perch. But there is also an unpleasant fact for fishermen - most of the fish in the reservoir are infected with helminthiasis and cannot be eaten.

Ecological situation

The Ob Sea has problems due to its sanitary condition. Its banks are constantly being eroded, which leads to a reduction in forests, trees falling into the water and their decomposition with the accumulation of phenols and poisons in the water, which have a negative effect on underwater inhabitants.

Water transport moving through it adds pollution to the waters of the reservoir, which uncontrollably discharges petroleum products. The man who dumps the products of his life into the reservoir does not lag behind.

The condition of the reservoir and its swamping have led to the fact that the conditions necessary for the reproduction of fish stocks are practically absent in the reservoir. In summer, diatoms and blue-green algae cause significant harm to all living things, reducing the amount of oxygen in the water due to their development. Parasites actively develop in the reservoir, which leads to mass death of fish.

Pike perch is disappearing from the Ob Sea - three reasons

There are practically no decent fish left in the waters of the Novosibirsk Reservoir, say fishing enthusiasts. “The remnants of pike perch up to 33 cm, which are prohibited from catching by law, gather in local flocks in search of salvation. Catching pike perch larger than 400 grams (more than 33 cm) using spoons has become extremely rare. And this happens precisely because of the small number of the test size. I have nothing to please you with - the environmental disaster of the Novosibirsk reservoir has already arrived, but for some reason everyone is pretending that nothing happened. And this is doubly sad,” says fisherman Sergei Kirov.

“Cannibal fish” attacked Yeltsovka

150 km of networks and yellow water

The fishermen assure that they checked the bottom of the Ob Sea with echo sounders and cameras. Tens of square kilometers are lifeless. The main reason is said to be abandoned nets - nylon and fishing line do not rot and for centuries can be a death trap for fish, crayfish and other underwater inhabitants. According to estimates from fishermen as of December 2021, there are more than 150 kilometers of abandoned nets at the bottom of the Ob Reservoir.

Some blame the inspectors of the regulatory agency for the disappearance of the fish. “Fishermen would be happy to remove them, and not a single fish would die, but Rybnadzor cuts off the nets, they go to the bottom,” says Andrey Bakhtinov, head of Our Fish LLC. “The prosecutor’s office chases the fishermen, they judge them, punish them, and take away their last money.”

Poisoned water from Barnaul may cause massive fish deaths

The yellow water that rolled like a wave under the ice of the reservoir does not add optimism. “We have yet to find out its influence on underwater inhabitants, but it was after its passage that the bite at sea noticeably worsened. Nobody knows for sure about the reason for this color, but there are rumors that this is a consequence of cleaning the wastewater treatment facilities of Barnaul every few years,” Sergei Kirov shares his guesses. “It was similar around 2010-2011, when the whole sea was like this, and pike perch stopped being caught,” Valery, a fisherman from Berdsk, writes on a specialized forum.

Another reason is poachers who catch pike perch using trawls. But during bottom trawling, natural spawning grounds and aquatic plants that serve as food for fry are destroyed. According to fishermen, sometimes poachers disguise themselves as scientists, allegedly fishing for scientific purposes.

Fish with wings and three-eyed perch: shocking trophies of Novosibirsk fishermen

Ban, as in Ladoga

Alarmed Sergei left an appeal on the ROI (Russian Public Initiative) website: “The long-term barbaric extermination of freshwater ichthyofauna with the parallel littering of the bottom of the reservoir could not be in vain. So much fish, and especially predatory fish, are caught that they do not have time to restore their numbers during the spring spawning period. These newborn juveniles barely have enough food to feed their older brothers; there can be no talk of any increase in the number of livestock naturally.” As a solution, the activist proposes to do as on Lake Ladoga - introduce a complete ban on the use of bottom trawls, nets and seines throughout the entire water area of the Novosibirsk reservoir with all tributaries, including the Biya and Katun

According to estimates by amateur fishermen, pike perch are caught per year 1.4 times more than the volume of reproduction in the spring during spawning. “This leads to an annual reduction in its number by almost 1.5 times, and in 2 years almost 2 times, which will ultimately lead to the complete disappearance of this species in all areas of the Ob Sea and its tributaries,” the appeal says. So far, the fisherman’s initiative has been supported by 82 people, while to consider the problem at the regional level, the petition must receive at least 100,000 votes in support.

We sent a request to the Verkhneob Territorial Administration with a request to comment on the situation, but the Federal Fisheries Agency was unable to respond promptly.

In the Ob Sea in 2011-2014, they tried to restore stocks of valuable fish species. Several tens of thousands of Siberian sturgeon were released. After its launch, no one ever saw it again. Therefore, the most valuable fish that can still be caught in the reservoir is pike perch.

Small rivers are also on the verge of disaster. Previously, in Eltsovka, a small river in the Sovetsky district, they used to catch crucian carp, perch and even pike. But now an insidious rotan, which the fishermen themselves call the “cannibal fish,” has made its way into the reservoir. It is believed that the appearance of rotan is a harbinger that a swamp will soon appear here and the end of the Eltsovka ecosystem will come.

Fishing on the Ob Reservoir

Spring fishing

In spring, the Ob Reservoir is often visited by fans of spinning fishing. They come to fish mainly from the shore, so they use long (up to 3.5 m) powerful rods. Reels are selected accordingly to the rods; They give preference to those models that have a reliable clutch and the ability to withstand the jerks of large fish.

Instead of fishing line in the spring, they put braid on the reels; There is less debris left on it, of which there is plenty in the water at this time. In addition, the braided cord is thinner, so it takes less load from moving water.

In early March, spinners come to the reservoir to hunt for pike perch. At this time, following the melting of the ice, the fanged ones begin to gather in flocks and go on annual migrations to their usual spawning places.

They catch pike perch with a jig, using relatively small (up to 7 cm) and narrow foam rubber, silicone - the latter are mainly vibrotails. The best bite of fanged fish is observed on dark-colored baits. Although there are days when they prefer to be interested in bright silicones or foam rubber.

Summer fishing

Fishing in a pond in summer can be done on the shore or from boats. The second is more promising, since fishing spots are easier to find on a boat, and fishermen get to them faster. They catch fish with a variety of gear: float rods, spinning rods, donks, trolling, mugs, girders, boats. One of the special features of fishing in summer is the complete absence of mosquitoes in the area of the reservoir.

The main method of fishing for local fishermen during this period is spinning. They use rods of different lengths, up to 3.5 m. Taking into account the possibility of biting a large predator, they are equipped with powerful reels, with a reliable clutch, and a fishing line with a diameter of 0.4 mm. Instead of the latter, braids are increasingly used, especially in places where you have to fish in strong currents.

Spinning baits are most often vibrotails of medium (

7 cm) size, which are used in jig fishing. They are usually dark in color, although sometimes local fish respond better to brighter colors. The efficiency of fishing increases significantly if there are sparkles on the bait’s body.

Pike fishing in the summer is more successful by trolling, which is increasingly interested in local fishermen. Spinning rods are also used for special trolling rods, but more often ordinary ones, which are distinguished by their high power. They do not use fishing line smaller than 0.2 mm - practice shows that such cords quickly break. The usual size of fishing lines is 0.35...0.4 mm. When fishing with a spinning rod, be sure to install a leash that can hold the jerks of large (10...15 kg) fish.

The most common size of pike in catches is 1...5 kg, pike perch - up to 5 kg. The hunt for these predators is often interrupted by attacks from perches, sometimes kilogram-sized ones.

In addition to hunting predators, many fishermen fish for white fish in the pond. Here, if you prepare well and work hard, you can become the owner of a 10-kilogram carp. But for this you need to find a suitable place, feed it well and be patient while waiting for a bite.

Bream in the summer without bait is generally difficult to catch. Although there is a lot of it, including trophy ones, weighing 10 kg. Usually the feeder from the shore catches more bream up to a kilogram. You can only hope for specimens weighing at least 2…3 kg when fishing from a boat, away from the shore. At the same time, the most used method of catching bream in a reservoir is the “ring”.

Winter fishing

The most visited Novosibirsk reservoir during the first ice and at the end of the winter season. During these periods there are especially many fishermen on the ice who love ice fishing.

Ice appears very quickly in the vastness of the Ob Reservoir. In winter, they hunt more for predatory fish species - perch, pike, pike perch. There are a lot of them in the reservoir, and they are decent in size, so local fishermen almost never engage in fishing for whitefish.

Perch is caught with a variety of baits, using ordinary jigs, perch spoons, small vibrotails and twisters, foam rubber and balancers. On the first ice, when it only forms in coastal areas, minke whales are looked for among snags, within holes, and bottom depressions. Moreover, in such places you can find a school of fish of various sizes. When ice covers the entire body of water, fishermen, in search of, in particular, perches, go to the edges farthest from the shore.

In remote areas, on riverbed holes and edges, they hunt for pike perch. This is done mainly by trolling, using special narrow pike perch spoons and balancers. The catches vary, often there are individuals weighing 5...7 kg, which are considered the usual size in the reservoir.

Fishermen do not miss the chance to catch pike in the reservoir in winter. They also lure it, but more often they prefer to use girders. Those who know promising places use traditional designs, including a reel with fishing line and bite alarm flags.

Many fishermen prefer to set up ice traps at night, and in the morning they go around them and collect their catch. They are made from a piece of rubber tube on which a piece of fishing line or cord 15...20 m long is wound. A leash (usually metal) and a tee or double are attached to the free end of the latter.

Such a girder is attached to a stick, which is placed across the hole. The structure itself is lowered into the water, naturally with live bait attached to the hook. Everything is sprinkled with snow on top and left until the morning.

Those who catch whitefish in the winter on the Ob Reservoir use winter fishing rods equipped with jigs. The latter use a variety of shapes and colors. They fish only with jigs or attach maggots and bloodworms to them.

Bream is caught in winter with stationary winter fishing rods equipped with jigs and a float. A worm, bloodworm, and maggot are placed on the jig hook. Usually they are caught using several fishing rods at once, located on nearby triple holes. This is done by first feeding the fish, for example, with bloodworms, chopped worms, and maggots.

Autumn fishing

Autumn is the time of pre-winter feeding of predatory fish on the Ob Reservoir. People come here with spinning rods in the hope of catching decent pike, pike perch, and perch. They fish from the shore, but more often from boats, since the latter allows them to quickly find fishing spots and fish those areas of the reservoir that are inaccessible from the shore.

Used more often. Taking into account possible bites of trophy fish, powerful blanks with a dough of at least 40 g, capable of coping with pike weighing 10 kilograms or more. The reels installed on them match the spinning rods. These are usually inertia-free ones with a size of 3000 or more. In equipment, fishing lines of 0.35 mm and higher are used, and braids are increasingly being used instead. The latter are stronger and provide greater sensitivity to the entire gear.

They catch pike with baits of different shapes, designs, and colors. The good old vibrators and turntables are in use. They use the most sophisticated wobblers. Jigs with silicone twisters and vibrating tails are popular. The only thing is to choose baits of medium and large sizes (up to 15 cm).

To catch pike perch in the fall, they go to the edges located near the riverbed. They fish mainly with jigs, using powerful rods and silicone baits up to 7 cm in size with a narrow body. The colors of the latter are dark tones, although there are days when fanged ones respond more to bright (for example, yellow) baits.

The most famous of them are Khrenovy, Atamanovsky, Krasnoyarsky Borok, Semizarodny, Elban, Kamenny. As already mentioned, several villages were flooded during the construction of the reservoir. The heights on which they were located formed the islands. Among them, Tan Wan is the most famous - it is also called Bear, as it hosts the “Pirate Song Festival”, which ends the sailing regatta.

A few words about bait

As complementary food, I use home-cooked porridge from millet cereals and peas. The consistency of the porridge should be such that it can be formed into a lump. The porridge should not be liquid or too crumbly. I add any vegetable oil and any aromatic additive to the porridge at the stage of its readiness. This could be vanillin, dill essence, or any other aromatic oil that you don’t mind sacrificing.

Fishing

Among the residents of Siberia there are many for whom the best relaxation is to sit with a fishing rod in the fresh air. Therefore, fishing on the Ob Reservoir is considered one of the favorite pastimes of residents of Novosibirsk and neighboring cities. This reservoir is home to several dozen species of fish. Pike perch and crucian carp are bred there on an industrial scale. The Ob Reservoir is also home to valuable fish species, such as sturgeon and whitefish, but it is prohibited to catch them. You can fish here at any time of the year. In winter, perch is most often caught on the hook, but pike perch can also be caught. However, bream and white bream sleep in winter. In summer you can fish from the shore. But having a motor boat will make it easier to find places where the bite is good.

All recreation centers located along the banks of the Ob Reservoir are ready to provide fishing services to vacationers. Many of them even specialize exclusively in serving tourists who come to these areas in the hope of an excellent catch. For example, the Westfalika recreation center offers fishing from the shore and from a boat, as well as boat rides, and at the Blue Lake tourist center tourists are supplied with fishing rods and other gear.

Beaches on the Ob Reservoir

There are not many places in Siberia where you can lie on the sand and sunbathe to your heart's content. This is why many people are attracted to holidays on the Ob Reservoir. For residents and guests of Novosibirsk, sandy beaches are equipped on its shores. Perhaps the most famous of them is Central, located in Akademgorodok. There is everything you need for relaxation: changing rooms, toilets, wooden paths on the sand, etc. The water in the Ob reservoir warms up to 25 degrees in summer, so even kids can safely swim. Every year sand sculpture competitions are held on the beach. You can ride on catamarans, banana boats. Another popular place is the Zvezda recreation park. In addition, there is a campsite on the territory of the Zvezda recreation park. There you can rent a gazebo or a house and cook barbecue. There is a playground for children.

Boarding houses and recreation centers

On the shores of the Ob Sea you can spend a weekend or vacation not only as a savage. Tourists are offered numerous boarding houses and recreation centers. In winter and summer, tourists are welcome at the tourist centers “Blue Lake”, “Brigantina”, “Obskie Prostori”, “Ust-Aleus”. Accommodation there is organized in rooms for 2-4 people, economy-class summer houses, as well as in separate cottages. Communities › Hunting and Fishing › Blog › Fishing on the Ob Reservoir - advice needed

I want to try fishing in the Ob Reservoir, using a spinning rod, from the shore or from a boat (next to the shore). Geographically not far from the hydroelectric dam. Only predatory fish are interesting - pike, pike perch, perch.

Tell me, what gear is better to fish with, where are the good places?

I have very little experience in spinning fishing - I fished on a lake in Vietnam and really enjoyed it.

Comments 12

On the first of May, my wife and daughter and I went to the Novosibirsk Zoo. We stopped by the reservoir and were very surprised by the local fishing method. At the bottom right, from the dam there is a creek, and the road goes there. I don’t know why, but fish gather there. The men throw out a spinning rod with large, almost self-made hooks, and jerk them out. Two or three casts, either pike perch, perch, or bream. And what is most surprising is that the hook catches the fish, sometimes by the back, sometimes by the tail, rarely by the head. This is the kind of fishing we saw for the first time.
